      @@KM4ACK not a problem! I totally learned something new from the video. The portion about using it as a hotspot but it also connects when at home! Ive been using Pat Winlink on a Pi at home but plan on putting it on a mobile AREDN node for EMCOMM purposes as an extra tool. Have not dabbled in the RDop portion yet as I do not have privileges. Eventually I may upgrade. At any rate the Pi is pretty versatile and loads more software can be installed to fit the needs of us hams! I like that!

    I just used the AmRRON scripts to install more amateur radio software than I'll need on an 11 year old Asus Eee PC that I plan on using as a control computer for digital modes in the field. It even installed the world famous KM4ACK getardoplist script (thank you very much). When I get the Pi 4, I'll use the AmRRON scripts to install the ham software. I am starting with the Raspberry pi and ham radio, any suggestion on wich is the best way to go, signalink, TNC-Pi, sound card or other tnc's available?, the primary projects i have in mind is to use it with winlink and move to the digital modes.

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tncpi will limit your options going forward a bit. Mine sits in the closet. I prefer the signalink or the wolphi. Signalink more expensive but a bit easier to work with. Wolphi is half the price but takes more fiddling. There’s always the build your own option...google is your friend. One last mention if you like to build things is the easy digi available on eBay. There are many other options so maybe others will chime in. Everyone has their favorites. Thanks for watching. 73, de KM4ACK

      I haven't. I am not a fan of the form factor for portable work. I prefer using a tablet connected to a headless pi. I have reports that Build a Pi runs well on the 400 so it really comes down to personal preference.

    I have been watching your PI videos trying to learn a bit more - this is interesting stuff! when you talk about autohotspot generating a hotspot when you are away from your shack, what is it connecting to in order to provide internet access, or am I not understanding? Thanks for your patience/help...

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't provide internet access. It creates a network using WiFi that you can connect to with another wireless device to control the pi. This allows you to run the pi "headless" meaning no keyboard, mouse, or monitor. Your wireless device replaces these peripherals.

    Another fine video. You might get tired of my questions …. Sorry for any annoyance! Haha. HotSpot Question - I imagine this would require the WiFi IP address to be static since the DHCP server for the house or QTH, will not be available in the field when you are without the router. So I would probably configure the WiFi IP Address on the Pi to static that would have the same internal IP address. You may describe that in one of your videos, I just haven’t noticed it. In the end, the static IP address would then give the tablet a consistent IP address of the Pi to connect to. Make sense?

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When the Pi is in hotspot mode, it has a static IP of 10.10.10.10. Full details for the hotspot are in this video th-cam.com/video/WqyPgj3cDKE/w-d-xo.html

    I’m enjoying the videos Jason. Any thought on doing HF APRS using PSK-63 on 30, 40 or 80 meters? I’ve been doing some research and am going to add to my pi this weekend... I think Direwolf / Xastir coupled with FLDigi might be able to make it happen. I borked my install up prior to backing it up last time I tried to build FLDigi so I’m starting fresh this weekend... thanks for the tip on backing up :-D

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have done HF APRS on 30 but not with PSK-63. It uses xastir and direwolf to accomplish the task. Goes out as packet at 300 baud. Might need to look into PSK-63 for it though. Haven't seen that done before but I only did the HF as an experiment. Here''s the vid on how I set it up. th-cam.com/video/tOt-hc1lj7I/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching! 73, KM4ACK

    • @tomcat1fl
      @tomcat1fl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The PSK-63 is a little more fault tolerant. I’ve been doing some reading but there aren’t a lot of folks doing it.
      WA4ZKO showed it and Robust Packet requiring the SCS modems. I’m under the impression that static crashes would kill 300 baud FSK if there is noise on frequency but PSK has fault tolerance built in... willing to try it with you if you’d like. I’m trying to bake it into my RasPi.
      I’m on the FL panhandle so I think we could do NVIS.
      FYI I do make it up to your neck of the woods, Brother lives in Franklin...

      More than likely it is RFI interference. Shorten every cable going into the pi as much as possible. Try relocating the pi or antenna. The card that lets you use the hard drives also lets you power it from 9 - 16 volts. It has a buck converter made into it. But there is a fan to put on it that also has a buck converter so it can be powered from around 12 volts. I hear that a fan would be good for it. Thank You for the information! This is fine and dandy , but the way I understand it to get audio input into the PI you need to interface a sound card to the PI .. It seems to me that what are explaining is mostly internet/wifi/bluetooth connections... I want to do stand alone RTTY or CW with my radio or just SWL via SDR . Didn't hear you mentioning anything about interfacing except plugging in a time/gps dongle.

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you need some sort of audio interface. You only need internet while you are setting up the pi do download and install the apps you need. After that, wifi is only used on the pi to generate a hotspot so you can connect to the pi with your phone/tablet. Bluetooth is only used for connecting the pi to a mobilinkd TNC. RTTY is VERY possible with just the pi, radio, and some sort of device (phone/tablet) to use as the monitor/keyboard/mouse. 73, de KM4ACK

      Hey Bryson, With only only one radio, you would have a simplex (parrot) repeater. Say something, the pi will record it, and then play it back over the same frequency. I actually played openrepeater a while back. I got the menus working but couldn't quite get the repeater function working. Think it was something with the audio levels. I may get back around to that at some point in the future but for now I went a different route. I'll do a vid on it when I get a chance to finish up the project.
