Bro, I have been having this exact problem with mine for the past 4 months. I was ready to take it to a shop, but you have saved me the time and money. Good on ya for uploading!
Very helpful. I used a couple of push nut fasteners on top of the threaded rod once I got it adjusted instead of zip ties. I think those push nuts will hold tight! I stacked three of them just for extra holding. Thanks again.
Thank you so much. I managed to get my rear hatch open then while messing with it I locked it while the door was in the up position. I couldn’t close the hatch again and spent a couple hours trying to figure it out before giving up. Stressed on it all night then saw your video the next day. Took me like 10 mins to get everything off and popped that lock back open. No more stress
Yeah... The video is long. Agreed. But, IDGAXJ, you're like me....you like figuring out WHY it's not working. And I appreciate you taking the time to explain why mine isn't working and showing me how it SHOULD work. Thanks very much! I appreciate it!
Glad you found it useful. It is a long video but made it as part of my VLOG while traveling. I didn’t think it would be as popular as it is. I have learned and try to stay on track in other how-to’s haha. Thanks for the comment!
Worked well for my 01 XJ. Turned out my handle wasn’t contacting the release arm at all in the closed position. Undid the clip at the bottom holding the threaded rod in place and threaded the whole arm in more until it was touching the handle. Now the hatch is smooth as butter🤌🏼
I just want to tell you thank you for putting your video up on TH-cam it really helped me a lot I had tried previous videos which helped me as well but I could not open the hatch with the handle so I ended up using the same method you did and it worked great thank you again for putting this up on TH-cam I don't know how I would have fixed my back hatch on my XJ without your help you're awesome
Thanks for the info - I have a 99 XJ. Perhaps I used too wide a zip-tie - mine wouldn't hold. The rod has ridges and they not threads - so a nut of any kind won't work. I ended up using a 1/4" wire clamp which is a u-bolt clamp with two nuts to tighten where you placed a zip -tie. So far - so good
My guy! Great video. Thank you sooooo MUCH! I been just giving my license plate a good lil pounding every time i lift up on the handle til it catches and opens up. Definitely gonna go in there and fix it up now.
Great fix! Like you I used to be able to push on the hatch and I found a sweet spot but since my last wheeling trip I haven’t been able to open it. Went with the tow zip tie method. Seems to work fine.
I googled 1993 XJ, which is what I own but got this 97-01. I have passenger side door where the locking mechanism is so dirty that even after I unlock the doors, that one sticks. Now the Hatch is doing the same thing so I'll remove the inside panel & get mine open. That locking mechanism is probably dirty as well. But first I'll look for a video that covers a 93 first. Thanks for posting this one though...
I have heard of folks drilling the top of the plastic you took off and using paracord or a rod to make an inside release. Obviously your tire carrier would have to be open. Be handy if you had your tarp enclosure deployed
Thanks for the vid! I'm going to drill through the threads and install a locking pin. Since it looks to be a matter of worn threading, that prevents the clips from getting a solid grab. A pin system should work just fine, and hopefully won't have to revist the issue. Thanks again for the vid!
It's funny you mentioned Christmas tree clips. I went looking for them at advance auto or autozone and they had no idea what I was talking about...lol.
I recently replaced my bulbs on the driver's side brake light. I didn't seat the brake light cover correctly and it was keeping the hatch closed. I used two butter knives to push it over and it came open. Whew.
Nice video 👍🏻 was it too difficult to put nuts on the stud instead of zip ties ? On the video it appears like it would be super easy to do and more permanent and durable .... or else ????
It would have taken a small coarse thread nut and I didn’t have time to look through what may have been available. Zip ties were readily available and easy to do. Otherwise I would have tried to do that instead.
Thanks. My issue is that my lock cylinder does not work. I assume I need to get the lift gate opened, then replace my cylinder. Does anyone know or have any guidance on replacing the cylinder? Not sure if I can open the hatch if I can't unlock it. Thanks!!
Wrong, wrong wrong!! That rod is threaded for a reason, it's supposed to turn! Just push that green clip on the bottom of that rod and push it to the left. The rod pops out. Then turn that rod to the right, two or three times. Push the rod back into the clip. Push the clip to the right and you are done.
Yep this don't work on 96 and older. I have a 96year and it takes 2 people to open my tailgate. Wish someone would do a video of that for my Cherokee. . I did find a used tailgate for 200$thinking off going that route. It beats how I have been opening my tailgate for a year and a half.
Keith Lea That is a lot to go through to fix a latch. Have you tried Jeep forums? I get a lot out of those as well. I hope there is an easier way for you!
From what I am hearing they are. Maybe the Jeep forums may give you some better ideas than TH-cam. I have used them often for various issues when I could not get good info from YT. Best of luck!
To bad you didnt' have any nuts that looks like it would solve your problems better for the long run, but the zip ties are working so at least you can use it now!
I'm on "Fix" number 3 with the ol zip tie trick.... in a month. moving on to something more permanent like drilling the threads for a cotter pin.

Thank you for your video! Pushing on the back was not working so learning to reach down from the inside was a life saver.

Fixed mine while watching your video! Very great explanation and helped me a ton! Thank you so much

Awesome! Glad it helped you out!
Glad I saw this I need to put in a rear wiper motor in my XJ the removal of the panel was helpful.
Thanks for this vid. Getting ready to get the jeep i just bought and it has this problem. Nice, that this is a nice easy fix.

Awesome video this saved me on fixing my parents jeep! Thank You!
so I have a 98 jeep and I just tried it and it worked
I recently replaced my bulbs on the driver's side brake light. I didn't seat the brake light cover correctly and it was keeping the hatch closed. I used two butter knives to push it over and it came open. Whew.
Try safety wire it will bight into the threads and hold up to the vibrations better
Great video! I had the same problem with my 97 XJ used nuts and zip ties to fix it. But now the handle part on mine is broken.
I’m sure that will be next. Using a nut would have been ideal for me if I was in my garage. Hopefully this holds for a while.
My hatch latch has just started doing that. thanks
Tanks for the video Mate 😎☺️
so simple, thanks mane
Thank you very much sir! Very useful your advices! Work very good for me!
Glad it helped!

Very helpful video!
Do you know what type of nut would fit on the stud?
What ever did happen to "Get Straight To The Damn Point" videos on TH-cam?
They are there scattered few and far

Lmao!
Your "average joe" just takes the full vid and post. Unless they plan on monetization, they probably wouldn't invest the time for editing.
Quick question what material is the hatch made out of in a 98 Cherokee I’m pretty sure they’re made out of steel…
10:45am Thursday July 7th 2023. Does this apply to a 1999 jeep Cherokee Sport?
That is what my Cherokee is. So should be the same.
Thank you 🙏
haven't had that problem , but now i know .. thanks .
billy joe
Helpful thanks
Thanks its been driving me crazy
Glad it helped!
Thank you
Thank you!!!!!

Did anyone every find out what thread nut can be used on that threaded rod to resolve the issue?
Super helpful!!!!!
Ah, good to know. I want to modify my latch on my 87 so I can open the hatch from the inside as a normal operation.
The 87 may be different. I think there is a video out there on older years. Not positive though.
Yep this don't work on 96 and older. I have a 96year and it takes 2 people to open my tailgate. Wish someone would do a video of that for my Cherokee. . I did find a used tailgate for 200$thinking off going that route. It beats how I have been opening my tailgate for a year and a half.

Heat up zip ties Cool off super glue zip ties to threads
Isn’t the fiberglass ‘96-earlier even WORSE ? My ‘96 is HORRIBLE !

Exactly. If it was my garage I would have put a nut on, but this will get me through for a while.
I push a button in my glove box and it opens!
I just RIPPED THE WHOLE#@$%!!! piece of plastic COMPLETELY OFF and chucked it in the dumpster, calmly.
You talked about putting a nut on it instead of twist ties. does anyone know the nut size? My nuts are too big ;)
Big nut problems haha!
THANK YOUUUU SOOO MUCHHH LOL
O
The most shitiest design on the simplest thing and it's across-the-board on every one of these hunka junks
Why does jeep use such a shitty design in the first place?
Thanks!
