    Yeah, this series deserved the Eisner Award for Best New Series it won not too long ago. Never have I seen such an incredible deconstruction of the comic book industry before, and this easily cemented Chip Zdarsky as one of my top 3 all time favorite comic creators.

      I definitely agree. Chip could have easily made a pretty black-and-white story about the evils of the industry but the fact that he was able to keep it so balanced and humanizing for (mostly) everyone involved gives the story a lot of empathy. I also think it shows a clearer depiction of these issues than ever before, and understanding them is the key to changing things.

    As a comics consumer, I can attest that I used to think that they were just products not the artform. However, it is through creators like you, OwenLikesComics and ComicPop that help shed light on the people behind these beloved comics. The writers and artists that I used to disregard as the product was more important than them. But now, I became a fan of their works as well even outside of the Big 2. So thanks for making me recognise these creators.

      Glad to hear it, I had a pretty similar path. I think a lot of the lack of knowledge about creators and their status stems from the fact that they work at companies that emphasize brands over the people behind them. It's unfortunate, but I hope that as people start to see these works as products of the people who work on them rather than things that just exist, the discourse around creators' contributions and rights starts to take more of a focus.

    It’s sad to read a ton of stories where creators are not given proper residuals for use of their creations (like Jim Starlin saying DC paid him more for KGBeast’s small appearance in BVS than he ever got for the use of Gamora, Drax and Thanos in the MCU ). The fact some of them have resulted to GoFundMes when Disney and WB couldn’t even bother to throw a bone is just a show that the capitalist system does not benefit anyone except the super rich and companies. I haven’t checked out Public Domain yet but it’s something I’m definitely going to check out. A spotlight on the people who make these comics the art form they are despite the looming businesses ready to exploit them for anything. Great work Doug

    While it focuses is comics, Public Domain shows the unfortunate truth of any Creative Industry as it currently exists.
    Nice video!

      I agree, there's definitely a universal appeal that you can get from this story. Let's hope people take its messages to heart. You can't make art without artists.

    I think Hey Kids, Comics could be seen as a bit of a counterpart to it.

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek
      @ForEveryKindofGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I do think there's significant overlap between the two, but I'd argue Chaykin has a much more cynical view of comics and the people who work in it. While Public Domain makes a point of saying everyone has their own agenda, it also goes out of its way to show how much value comics has as an art form.

      Thanks so much! I'd highly recommend it, the trade for the first volume is super cheap and Zdarsky just announced it's returning for another!

    Excellent review Chip has been one of those writers and artist I have a been a fan of since sex criminals and this series is one of his best combining slice of life superheroes satire and commentary on the comics medium it's a testament of how great chip is at storytelling

      I really agree. Zdarsky has a fantastic voice as both writer and artist, so when he releases something he's really passionate about you know it's going to sing.

      I'd really love to do more in the future. While I think mainstream comics are better for channel growth, I think indie books are way more diverse in the stories they tell and how they tell them.

      I would say sad but hopeful. Every creative industry has a history of neglect, but that doesn't diminish the art that's come out of it, or the fact that artists are becoming more aware of their worth to these industries. Progress may be slow, but it has to come sooner or later.

    I just read Public Domain last Sunday. Zdarsky's work has made me continue to stay away from the whole superhero nonsense everyday.

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek
      @ForEveryKindofGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can definitely understand taking a step back (especially after this year) but I would also make the case that the bad parts of superhero comics aren't emblematic of the medium. There can be a lot of shady stuff behind the scenes, but there are also great people working within the industry, trying to better their corner of comics and tell the best stories they can.
      It's a really complex situation, but I have hope that the industry will improve as long as people continue to fight for the creators who work there.

      @@ForEveryKindofGeeksums it up. I love superheroes and superhero stories and characters but with all the nonsense some people want force feed us is sad and sickening. how can a superhero story be a superhero story with hardly any heroism.

    Let me guess this comic is about the life of an artist who the creator yet never been credited they were exploit to there work then change it for there liking i think i found this idea somewhere but dunno
    Noted am not comic fan but i have heard some comic creator like stan lee was never paid or even worst never rewarded
    I may be wrong but it my view that it
