Hi. A sound's tongue position is influenced by the sounds before and after since the tongue is moving. I think 'conquer' and 'clock' are about the same, but because 'conquer' starts with a 'k' and is said alone, without a word before it, the 'k' starts out without influence from a previous sound. If you said 'click'(front vowel, 'k' in back) instead of 'clock', the tongue is coming from front to back, and I think you would feel the 'k' position is a little more forward.
