  • Is there a chance that the Pittsburgh Penguins find a trade partner for Tristan Jarry out west? After seeing the Los Angeles Kings lose to the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night, Hunter and Patrick believe that the Kings could be a destination to send Jarry this offseason. They look at how it makes sense for the Kings because of their goaltending situation and how Rob Blake hasn't shied away from making big moves to help the team. They also look at how that move would help the Penguins moving forward before looking back on a polarizing season for the team's big offseason acquisition, Erik Karlsson. They discuss how he had a season of highs and lows and give their take on whether he'll be better next year. finally, they tackle the biggest question surrounding the organization...is it time for a rebuild?

Apologies for the delay again, everyone. TH-cam decided to go down starting around 3:30-4 p.m. ET and we couldn't post until now.

I liked the trade that brought Karlsson to the 'burgh. I think that the biggest issue that the defensemen faced were, first, that the Pens had very little net front presence, until the trade for Bunting, and secondly, that the F3 wasn't covering the point when Karlsson, or Letang, pinched or "activated".
It doesn't matter if you have a wonderful shot, from the point, if the goaltender is easily able to see it, the whole way in.

If there’s a deal to be made, I’m good with trading Jarry. Karlsson could’ve been better, but also wasn’t nearly as bad as people made him out to be. I keep reminding about the trade to get him. Imagine how much worse this season would’ve gone if Petry, Rutta and Granlund were still on this team lol what you said Patrick about letting Karlsson run the power play is exactly what needs to happen next year!

I tell you this … yes the top 4 players are the guys you need & Dubez needs to surround them with better talent - but they NEEEED guys like RUSTY & PETEY . straight up 110% blue collar players every single game . I’m even gonna throw DOC in that mix - not sure if Pat has said it but someone did - he’s a Rusty Light (I sell beer for a living so I love the beer comparison)
I’m even gonna throw BUNTING in there - he’s not gonna score 40 goals a season - but he has an underdog mentality that was sorely lacking on this team . even as is (minus Graves) before July 1st of course - I’m excited for this team next season … all season long they showed spurts of being one of the best teams - towards the end they proveddd they were one of the best teams - & circumstances landed WSH(so bad) a playoff spot … the whole time I watched that series of them against NYR - I thought - wow SID would have atleast 2-3 points in each game … OVI … 2 shots - 0 pts in 4 games … almost said 5 games 😬 wouldn’t wanna give em too much credit 🤣
    GO PENS !

The fact that Hunter Hodies used Granlund and Petry in the same sentence as the word “asset” is all you need to know about this episode 😂😂

Agree with you guys. And everyone forgets what Dubas dumped in this last off-season as far as players and contracts. Unfortunately he took on a couple more (Jarry and Graves). Penguins and Steelers fans are spoiled, especially the younger ones who only know winning seasons; we have been blessed for a better part of TWO DECADES (unreal) and just enjoy the last bit because the other side of the coin can be BRUTAL (talk to a Pirates fan). They act like these older players suck when it's the supporting players that are lacking. Wait until they get their wish and everyone is finally gone.

& if the PP was average SID woulda been over 100 pts …

Jarry needs a 1b goaltender to split the 82 game season with. It's almost like his conditioning is the best. 1st half of season he plays well, 2nd half he doesn't almost like he runs out of gas. If pens could get a great package deal for him, I would trade him. If not, give him another year but get a backup who could start 41 games.

If Jarry does go to the kings, what do you guys think about Kaliyev being involved in the trade? Younger player with some upside, had a little bit of a down year this season and has been getting bottom 6 minutes his whole career. There’s probably more opportunity here and he still is young.

    • @LockedOnPenguins
      @LockedOnPenguins  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That’s a player I can certainly see them being intrigued about, especially since the goal should be to get younger. He certainly can’t be worse than a lot of the other bottom six options they had this past year

The Pens are in a unique situation where they can do both "win now" and "rebuild", by bringing in young talent. It could be like the late 80s, early 90s, Pens, where you had Lemieux, Stevens, and Recchi, trade for Francis and Samuelsson. Then you draft Jagr.
Dubas has a history of finding NHL level players outside of the first round...Knies, Holmberg, and Robertson are just a few.

We could see Vegas in that same situation, again, with the huge contract given to Hanifin, and the large, long-term deal that Hertl has.

How do you figure a “Norris trophy” winning, highly offensive defenseman ends up being a good acquisition, when after 82 games he’s only a +4?
You can fool yourself into thinking it was a good deal but unless he was going to repeat with 100+ points and be at least 50% better defensively than he was, there’s no way he was worth it. I know they got rid of contracts of unwanted players, but the cap hit and salary they’re left with is horrible! I highly doubt he’s going to be like Sid and continue to be a high-level player.

I don’t personally use +/- to fully evaluate a player unless it’s skewed in one direction or the other. I think there’s a ton of other better stats you can use than that.
And as for the other part, he was never going to produce 100+ points again and I don’t think anyone had that expectation. We have him well under 100 for the start of the season because he wasn’t going to be carrying the load like he did for the Sharks. I think you can definitely say that his season was a bit disappointing (and I would agree) but that’s still a move I make every time. Also, you weren’t trading for Karlsson’s defensive impact, or I certainly wasn’t. Thats never been his MO

      1) he was a plus 6 at 5v5
      2) there's significantly more than just looking at plus minus.
      3) it was a good deal
      4) the only fooling here is you thinking it wasn't a good trade.
      5) the trade saved money

I wish Dubas could find a way to swap Jarry for Markstrom. Even if we had to eat some salary on it. I think both goalies could use a fresh start.

I agree you make the trade 10 out of 10 times to get rid of Petry and Granlund, but he was disappointing at a 10 million dollar cap hit. You just need more consistency for that price tag. Highest paid player on the team…he has to be better.
Also, the use of the word “dynamite” is extreme after hearing the numbers you listed. They’re good numbers, but not special. Just over 50% near 60% isn’t blowing anyone away. It means you did slightly better than your opponent when you were on the ice. And at 10 million he should do better than his opponent.

Jarry straight up for Philip Danault. Pittsburgh needs a solid 2 way Centre to play behind Sid. Then make Geno 3C and Eller 4C

Especially where defensemen are concerned. Opposing forwards are almost uncontested in front of the Pens' net.
