  • You've always heard me mentioning about the bright side of becoming a doctor. Still, in this video, I'll be revealing the problems that are faced by medical graduates in Malaysia. Not trying to discourage or stop you from pursuing medicine but just want to let you know what you'll be facing in the future if you want to become a doctor in Malaysia. Although after knowing all of these, I still think I will continue to choose to study medicine, I really wish someone had told me about this before I chose my path, at least I can be more well-prepared and know what to expect in the future. Don't get me wrong, medicine is definitely a good degree to study given that you're doing because you genuinely love it. Things can get hard in your medical journey but what will keeps you motivated is the right intention of why you want to become a doctor.
I hope you all the best in your future. 🤗

Because the medical expenses in the country keep increasing from year to year, government does not want to allocate more budget on help care, thus currently, they opt to cut the benefit of doctors by applying contract system, cutting down district hospital houseman numbers and reallocate them to state hospital for the sake of public healthcare cost :(

Depends on what's the reason you want to do biomedical science? Do you want to continue into research field or it's just because of interest? If you're doing it for research, I would say overseas provide more research opportunity, if it's for interest it really does not matter whether it's a good degree or not, I have friends who did biomedical science, they still get to work in different field actually.

Hi Isaac. You could try getting into a Psychology programme for the beginning. As psychology is a part of the medical field, it's more diverse in work fields and opportunities it offers. There's a Bachelor of Science in Psychology(BS) and a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology(BA), both with and without (Hons). If you don't meet requirements of having certain subjects to take up a medical degree, given your background in Arts and Business, you could go for a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology (BA)(Hons), and find out further from the particular education institute if you need any additional subjects to be qualified as a pre-med before you get into med school. For instance, a Psychology degree is considered a pre-med degree in University of Cyberjaya (UoC) which was also previously known as CUCMS.
You are allowed to study medicine after a psychology degree there. Maybe it's because some key subjects are covered during the whole study period which qualifies you as a pre-med student. You could plan out your path further after that. I have seen people graduate as doctors even at the age of 48, and some even older with no background of science in school or their previous jobs. Everyone's journey to med school is different. They all started somewhere, worked hard, and succeeded to pave their way to med school. But keep in mind what Dr Katherine said about the acceptance as permanent doctors. Besides that, everything seems good if you're willing to still go for it. Remember, it's always ok to start later in life, many started later and make amazing doctors today! You can do it too. Good luck!

I do agree with you when you said that people should not become a doctor if they want to be rich. However, one thing about medicine is that the fees are really expensive, some parents used up all their savings just to send their child to med school and when they graduate from medschool thinking that they can now support themselves (and their family) but the reality hits cause in reality doctor's salary (before you become specialist) isn't really enough to support the whole family. That is why I always give advice in my video saying that don't go into medicine because of $$.

it'll be around 200-500k depending the university. It's almost 500k for IMU :) not really sure about public, it will be much lesser than the private ones!

we have practical (OSCE) and theory exams (MCQ, SAQ, SEQ etc). For practical we do patient interviews, physical examinations, procedures, basically anything that will be doing in the clinic or hospital as a doctor. While for theory, it is to test your basic medical knowledge.

It depends on each medical school as all have different formats and exams and even the written paper styles are different.

Too many medical graduates each year in Malaysia (estimated 8k to 10k per yr, as a results of uncontrolled private medical schools) until not enough permanent post in government hospitals for them, so more than 50% of these young drs will be working on contract based, after the contracts ended, those can't get permanent post will have to work in private sectors or insurance company others etc. Situation will only get worse year by year as long as mass production is still going on. EVEN private sectors also can't absorp too many graduates recently, especially you lack of experience. Yes, you will see many of these medical graduates become jobless or work in non medical fields. Think carefully before you choose now, this golden job is no longer produce gold nowadays
