Candace Parker's historic dunk deserves a deep rewind | 2006 NCAA Tournament

  • It's the 2006 Women's NCAA Tournament, and Candace Parker is dribbling toward the basket with a head of steam. It ... kind of looks like she's about to dunk. What if she does?
Well, this is where it's worth reflecting on some history, both long- and short-term. Broadly speaking, dunking isn't a big deal. In the past, dunking has been controversial and even forbidden, but these days, it's a common part of the game. Efficient, exciting, and celebrated.
What about for women? That history is a bit more complex. It starts with gifted female athletes being driven away from the game of basketball, and it continues with complex and sometimes patronizing critiques of women bold enough to dunk.
Parker hopes to make dunking as ordinary for the women's game as it is for her, but that's in the future. For now, we have to understand the complex past of this basketball skill.

See, the thing about Candace was that she was hugely popular in Knoxville and still is. I was a kid at the time the Lady Vols won back to back nattys and they were just as respected as Fulmer's football team was. Some may find that unlikely, but having a legend like Pat Summitt at the helm makes it happen.

I think women's basketball's desire to prove they "could do what the men do" inadvertently led to how professional women's basketball is suffering financially. Dunking is still a rare feat in women's games and the games suffer from lack of entertainment at times.
As a man I don't believe I'll ever understand the frustration some of these women must have felt, but I think the rim should be lowered to increase interest and revenue for the sport. Women dunking on 9 foot hoops with smaller balls could be equivalent to men currently dunking on 10.
It doesn't matter that the women "can't do what the men do" because their bodies are different. But the best female bball players in the world deserve to be entertaining and make more money

    • @EvilDickism

Agreed, the same happens in football, the pitch is too big for them, and the goalkeepers are too small for the dimension of the goal. This is why long passes and shots, sprints, and attemps at clearing a good shot are so dull in Women soccer. The pitch and the goals need to be smaller in proportions of their bodies so they are more intense games, more competitive and more fun to watch

    • @CardsNHorns04
      @CardsNHorns04 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

100% agree. That’s why I support the NBA taking over the WNBA. A lot of people say “the WNBA should be gone, it loses money!” While that is true, the NBA wasn’t the juggernaut it is now 25 years into its existence. That would have been 1971, which the NBA was fighting the ABA for players and attendance. Add in that women, to this day, are not considered “feminine” if they play sports. That hurts development of the game because young women see that in middle and high school and do more “girly” things to attract the boys. It’s gonna be a while before women’s professional leagues take off, and they may never be as successful as men. Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t exist.

25 years in the nba could fund itself. The fact that you mention a competing league proves the health of basketball far more.

    Ingredients
    1/2 cup sugar
    1/2 cup packed brown sugar
    3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
    1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
6 to 7 cups thinly sliced peeled tart apples
    1 tablespoon lemon juice
    Pastry for double-crust pie
    1 tablespoon butter
    1 large egg white
    Additional sugar
In a small bowl, combine the sugars, flour and spices; set aside. In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice. Add sugar mixture; toss to coat.
Line a 9-in. pie plate with bottom crust; trim even with edge. Fill with apple mixture; dot with butter. Roll remaining crust to fit top of pie; place over filling. Trim, seal and flute edges. Cut slits in crust.
Beat egg white until foamy; brush over crust. Sprinkle with sugar. Cover edges loosely with foil.
Bake at 375° for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly, 20-25 minutes longer. Cool on a wire rack.

Larry Cera even if you use that dunk as an example, Candace herself mentioned how she just wants dunking to be a normality for her instead of a fascination. Think about it, if women’s basketball was as advocated for as much as femininity was on them, then we’d have greater talent and see these things more often than not because like men’s basketball, it would have examples and evolutions for generations. Women’s basketball players my age and younger are just now doing some of the things nba players have long since been doing because of that as well. When you actively deter and discourage a target group away from something like this, it takes longer for that talent and skill to develop. That’s the point that this video makes. so many soccer momments need rewinds. 2012 UCL final, 2002 UCL final (Zidane), 2006 WC final, watford x Leicester championship playoff game (almunia's save, deeney's goal), 2005 UCL final (schevchenko's final penalty), 2006 UCL final (belletti goal).
and that's only the finals, you can go on with other key games

Can we get D Rose's block after setting his career high. I know it may not be the most important game but there is so much history for you to talk about at least with rose.

I like how this video ascends beyond sports to tackle deep-rooted issues that have persisted as long as society has existed. Obviously woman's sports will never be as popular as men's, but they're just as entertaining nonetheless. Keep it up boys.

Watching this video for the first time after Candice Parker and the Chicago Sky won the WNBA title, where it should be noted that Brittney Griner also made history by being the first to dunk in a WNBA Finals game.
Not surprisingly, this was a superb episode of Rewinder. It startling to think how dunking has been at the center of so much controversy over basketball's history. Also as starting are seeing the unnecessary hurdles the women's game has had to overcome just to be recognized as worthy. Stories like this one go quite a ways in moving the bar forward when given the chance to be told.
Here's to more in the future!

Any person who dunked in a basketball game owes their careers to The Harlem Globetrotters. They got the ball rolling in the '40s

Here's a proposal: Rewinder of April 24th 2012, Camp Nou, Barcelona vs Chelsea. Rewind back to the Torres goal. The story behind that goal is so incredible. Torres being forgiven for being a failure at Chelsea, Chelsea's captain being sent off for a disgraceful foul, Chelsea going 2-0 down and a man down away from home, Barcelona's countless chances to seal the win...and of course, the goal in stoppage time to put it beyond all doubt. The commentary on that game is forever etched in my mind.
The 2012 UCL final is worthy of an episode as well.

43 years of "Women can do anything a man can do!" is not the right preparation to be excited or impressed by this. It's more like "Well it's about time one of you lived up to your hype."
