      In one respect they have. The 6.5 PRC is based on the 300 RCM case. The RCM's were at the tail end of the "short magnum" boom and before the "fast twist" era. They didn't really offer much of an advantage to existing cartridges. This was before laser rangefinders had become common and relatively light bullets at high velocity to minimize elevation issues was what was popular. That is why the 300 WSM is the only short-magnum cartridge that is still popular. It was the fastest, not the most accurate, nor the best for long, high BC bullets.

      Had a rcm, 30-06 & 308 lined up together a couple months ago. And if had to pick just off of looks youd pick the RCM. Its such a cool cartridge.

    I would love to see 338 RCM make a comeback. When you think about a 500 yard and in elk gun with a short barrel for suppressor like everyone wants now it fills all the boxes!

      I used to have one of the early 338 RCM rifles with the 20" barrel and a surprisingly nice walnut stock. I got tired of never being able to find brass or ammo for it and sold it. I loved that gun.

    300 RCM is the best balanced 300 short mag period. Impressive velocities from a compact platform and case dimension allowing an extra round in the magazine over the WSM's. Would love to see a comeback for them now that the 6.5 PRC is established and successful. Maybe a 7 RCM?

    Great video! Hornady has really stepped up its game since the 1970's when I started reloading their bullets because they shot great and were economical. It's fantastic that you folks have developed such innovative products. Joyce would be proud. My Dad reloaded Hornady bullets back in the 1960's and I've been using them ever sense ..

    I loved that part where Steve says that you don't shoot over 200 meters, you just get closer. I have my limit at 300meters with my 308 and 6.5, and if it's further than that, I just walk a bit more.

      Love it when people blow away their trophy 700 yds then find they just shot it on the other side of the Grand Canyon (except for the tragic aspect). The whitetail guy I most respect is currently shooting B&C deer at 16 yards. That is his old guy trad max. He is one of the best field shots I have seen in the modern era. He once shot a cougar that charged him . All these long range hunters need to man up.

    The .375 Ruger is going to die out if you do not start making cases available. That would be tragic, as it IS better than the H&H. However, when the hunters with .375 Rugers can only find 300gr DG ammo sometimes, people will just not give up the world-wide ubiquity of the H&H.

Wish for a 180-185 round for mule deer. Comments in a podcast about the Win Mag round would be appreciated. I also shoot your 5.56 ammo for target and hunting coyotes. Along with 9MM & .45 Critical Defense and Critical Duty for personal defense. Keep up the great work Hornady.

    I like the RCM design, and have a Ruger with the 20' barrel. But I'd prefer a 24 inch barrel like the Savage Weather Warrior 300WSM rifle and Ruger ought to have offerred their rifles in two barrel lengths (20 and 24). Kinda like how Marlin did it for the 30-30 with a 20 inch barrel and the XLR with the 24 inch barrel.

  • @jfess1911
    @jfess1911 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The RCM's had less case capacity than the WSM's, and virtually all the magazine articles just said that they RCM was slower than the WSM, especially with handloads. Also the RCM's really shined with the Hornady factory ammo. At the time, magazines articles would spend a lot of time showing data from their handloads which could not match the factory stuff. Superperformance ammo was not yet out, so most people just figured that Hornady was lying about the velocities.
    Although the commercials for the RCM's touted the handiness of the 20" barrels, it was not a big deal with with hunting journalists at the time and was not emphasized. Those commercials are still on TH-cam, I think.

    It seems ridiculous to me that you are out there 6 months ago bragging about cartridges you haven't built brass for, or in the case of 338/300 even loaded ammo in years. I have a .338 RCM and love it. I was smart enough to buy up a bunch of loaded ammo and brass when it was available. If someone now were to ask me which to buy I would point them to the .338 Winchester because Hornady deciding not to make any brass for it wouldn't bother you a bit when there are other companies pumping out brass and EVERY company loads for it. Proprietary cartridges are only sustainable if you buy up all the ammo and brass you can while they are available.

    What if Hornady made a shotgun cartridge for the military for drones? Not like a shoulder fired shotgun but a light weight possibly belt feed style of gun, but using the SIG hybrid case technology and moly chrome barrel lining for barrel life! with a special shot cup that can use the technology of our 40mm grenade that counts rotation of the projectile so it can expand at different heights

  • @samcarter2985

    If they kept the belt, they could have used a shortened 378 Weatherby Magnum case for the 375 Ruger. The case capacity would be insane, even in a standard length action.

    I still run the 300H&H, it's good for my purposes and does what is needed, and has some cool factor history to it. The discussion about powders is interesting, sure there are more stories on that subject, not sure why St Marks hasn't released some more of them to market, I expect the StaBall's evolved out of that project. But, I have seen where naming a powder Superformance, Leverevolution and having same name on ammo line sure confuses a lot of newbie reloaders, that was a not such a great idea.

      Hornady made bonded bullets for a while, but switched back to cup and core to get better accuracy. The problem is in the bonding process itself. It is essentially soldering and flux is used to remove oxidized material of both the lead core and the jacket in order to get a good bond. As the bullet is heated to melt and bond the lead, you see bubbles and blobs of the oxidized materials get distributed randomly in the core. This throw off the balance of the bullet slightly and reduces accuracy.
      Federal's attempt to minimize the effect on accuracy can be seen in the Terminal Ascent bullets. The design reduce the amount of lead in the core and moves it closer to the centerline. This minimizes the effect on accuracy from a lead core that is slightly out of balance.

      The nosler accubonds seem accurate enough. Swift Sirocco's also. It's a hunting bullet. Not a match bullet. Bonded bullets are awesome. Hornady could make it work I'm sure.

      @@johncadloni4538 Hornady started making bonded bullets (InterBond) in 2003 and still produce the bonded DGX (Dangerous Game eXpanding) line, so they have a lot of experience. If you check the forums, the Interbonds were not noted for their accuracy, cost significantly more than the cup-and-core lines and didn't sell that well. Their engineers talk about their limitations and challenges of making bonded bullets on some podcasts.
      Roughly a decade ago, Hornady apparently decided to concentrate on accuracy and the lower cost "premium" ELD-X lead core bullets combined with a line of monolithic bullets (GMX). Since Hornady has gained market share since then, it has worked out well for them. They have even added a new production facility which is currently still running at full capacity.
      Ironically, even their competitor Federal, which has its own lines of bonded bullets (Terminal Ascent, Trophy, Fusion) also loads the ELD-X, so the Hornady bullets are clearly popular.

      @@johncadloni4538 Most hunting does not require extreme accuracy, so I agree with you. On the other hand, the vast majority of ammo is shot at targets, so a little increase of accuracy there makes a big impression on many people. Twenty years ago, there were not really that many people shooting at 500 yards and over, where a relatively small increase in accuracy can make a big difference. Hornady seems to be using this as advertising for their hunting bullets, so they make a big deal of calling their ELD-X a "match-accurate hunting bullet. Marketing.

      As Steve mentioned it allows 375 H&H performance to be chambered into rifles costing less than half the price of a traditional magnum 🤷🏻‍♂️
      Then again considering 375H&H came out 7 years after 9.3x62mm - 375H&H is really also a solution to a non-existent problem

      Better performance out of a 20" barrel than a H&H with a 24". Works like a charm for me, super fast pointing and handy in thick cover. Many guys in Africa have switched too.

    The 375 and 416 just don't exist in the marketplace, certainly not outside the US. Which, if you think about it, is where the targets mostly live. (Winchester is doing the same thing, selling 405s and in that case, nobody is even making the ammo product). People are gobbling up the Ruger Guide Guns and there is zero ammo. They were basically a bad idea anyway, but to put this trash out there and have no ammo is maybe ok when the CEO goes on a safari, but is just idiotic for the rest of us.

      As an engineer who has studied ballistics, I enjoy these podcasts for the tech and historical info they provide. I have learned a great deal from them over the past couple of years. The men on the panel explained what their goals were and how they tried to get there. The development of the RCMs and 375 Ruger cartridges were requested by a Ruger.

    🤔 I was all on board with the short (20") barrel, 2.5x8 Leupold Scope, and the lightweight rifle! Then you guys (Steve Included) contradicted your logic by talking about adding a suppressor, which lengthens the rifle and results in it not being so "handy"! I DON'T EVER WANT Suppressors legal in my State, because we already have enough poachers out their and we don't need to be giving them an additional tool to do their dirty work! 😡

    • @alaskatruoutdoors9238
      @alaskatruoutdoors9238 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always thought so too, then I tried one. Poachers will always do what they do, with snares, crossbows etc. Millions of guys like me (and probably you too) have permanent hearing loss from the occasional unprotected shot while hunting. Often the choice is either make a fast shot at your target or fumble around with earpro and miss your one and only opportunity.
