Dearest, Sir Galway - Thank you, so very much, for these wonderful videos!! I was honored to have gotten to see you play, in concert, many years ago, when I was a teen. I am 52, now, and hardly play, anymore. Seeing these videos has given me the will, to play, again. You are an amazing inspiration, to us, all.

I downloaded the music through imslp for free. Now I have something new to oractice. In a way, I learned most of my flute playing from you as I took piano lessons, but was self-taught in flute until college.

He is lovingly telling us how one should split scales so that could be able to focus on each of the three registers, and only then going up and down through them. THAT is the advice, he can't tell each one of the viewers how to do that. Moreover, he is James Galway. Find your paths. Miracles won't happen.

Super amazing! I wanted to improve my playing for a while and grabbed my old studies (back from the times I still had lessons). But it isn't always easy without a guide because I'm not always sure about how I can improve certain aspects. So thank you very much! Your tips are super helpful! Stay safe!

I'm a complete beginner, but the example given sounded so easy I stopped in the middle of the video to try it, and lo and behold I can do it, albeit at lesser speed. But then I noticed by direct comparison just how much better James' tone is, he's miles ahead. And I thought, maybe I can't do that with my $300 flute but I can maybe make some improvement. And lo and behold, I found I can do it with improved tone. I was very pleased, though I'm sure my attempts would make any pro wince.
TL;DR Listen to Galway and at least make an attempt to do what he says. He doesn't sell useless BS, ever. And it doesn't matter if you are a rank beginner. Give it a shot.
Sadly most teaching was like this. I had Susan Milan at the Royal College. I used to bring her a piece and she used to play it to me and then say ‘now you play it like that’. That’s why we’ve now got a generation of flautists (with a few notable exceptions) who all sound alike, play the same tired old repertoire that’s been played for generations and who don’t have a creative bone in their bodies. I wish I’d had the courage to ignore my teachers! If you’re a young flautist reading this, yes listen to the great flautists and be inspired by them (including the fabulous James Galway), but then forge your own path, create your own music, reinvent flute playing. No one wants to hear the millionth perfect performance of the Faure Fantasie -nobody is interested!!

"Nobody" is a big word. For some people, unlocking the repertoire for themselves is a good experience. And face it, most of the audience at a recital have never heard any of the pieces. Why can't they just enjoy it without your judgement?

Sir James is like every flute teacher I had when I was young. Says ‘practice this’, lookie me, and gives you zero actual actionable information.
I'm self-taught on flute but learned sax from my band director, a trumpet major. Moral of the story is Sir James is giving you valuable insights, it is up to you to make them "actionable"
As an adult learner, I had one flute teacher. After a few lessons of stuff like this I gave up playing flute for a year, even though I was already playing flute, amongst other instruments in a band. The confronting approach of "practicing" vs "playing" did me in. I went back to other instruments I had taught myself and continued to make my living as a musician. After that year, the band presented me with a song that was flute centric. I learned it and haven't looked back. I'm almost as old as Sir Jimmy and made my way in life in music. I am NOT saying that I play fantastically or that my way is/was best; it was however best for me. I am at best a capable amateur level player who got extremely lucky. I regret not having had a better foundation in basics and technique however I did work it out and learn most importantly the joy of playing music as a young adult. Playing music has to be about the music however that works for each player. It has to be fulfilling for the soul otherwise one should really do something else. A teacher who looked at me as a player instead of as a "student" may have kept my attention and not crushed my enthusiasm.
What kind of “teaching” is this? Yes, you sound great, but there is no methodology or any kind of instructions on how to achieve good sound, articulation, intonation et. c. Oh... just practice, right? What a revelation. Sorry, not subscribing.
