Came looking for a review on the 55 and i noticed how you consistently reply comments so i subbed. Watched your review on the Coros Pace 2 vs the GF55. Impressive. Please keep doing the Lord's work.👍😁
A garmin function i like which you've never mentioned is you can access your watch settings while running. I have a habit of leaving auto lap on for my easy runs and when i do a quality workout out with cruise intervals i like it off. During my warm up i get my 1st km stats and realise i left my auto lap on. While running still i can turn it off so your intervals are a better stat. Those 1200m are 1200m and not 1k and 200m. Hope that makes sense
Great review. Thank you. My husband is looking to replace his old Garmin. He usually runs but sometimes like to take walks. His current watch does not have a walking activity (my Vivomove 3S does). Does the Forerunner 55 include a walking activity? Thanks.
Great video, as always. Good blow what has given Garmin to the FR55 by leaving it with the heart sensor of the previous generation, in my way of seeing they have put it in a difficult situation and of low demand.
My guess is because they have lots of them on hand so they can drive down the cost on the device. But it would have been nice to see the updated version here. That said, HR performance was actually pretty good even though it was the "old sensor"
The "old" sensor is still a very good sensor. For most people doing normal running, they won't notice that much of a difference and, if you're _that_ concerned about it, get an HR strap regardless of the watch.
Hi Chase the Summit I have this watch and love it. I want to get a Garmin for Runner 955 in a few months. I picked up a Garmin Forerunner 55 on Amazon sale today. I know with Garmin it takes time to build your profile and then all the benefits of Garmin eco system. Do you think the Garmin For runner 55 replace my Samsung watch. I know I will lose the Samsung eco-system features, but can the health and workout features beat the Samsung Galaxy S4 watch. I walk and swim mainly. Is the fitness features better on the Garmin than the Samsung watch?
Great review! I have a vivoactive 3 and switched to the galaxy Active 2 (for the OLED) and instantly regretted it! I love the Garmin ecosystem and have recently gotten involved in running. Would this be a good upgrade from the Vivoactive 3?
I think in most aspects the Forerunner 55 is a superior watch. It's got longer battery life, and more functionality with safety features, pace pro, suggested workouts and other features.
Hi, I am new to smart watches/ tracker watches, I wanted to know if it was recommended to buy a screen protector for this one and others ? Thx and great video
Would you recommend the coros pace 2 or the garmin forerunner 55? I am getting to be a pretty serious runner, so I want a watch that can give me the features I need to help me me successful.
Hello! Thank you so much for the review. I am looking forward to buy this watch for my father, so he can do his cyclings controlling his heart rate. Can you tell me if it is possible to configure the watch to trig an alarm when the heart rate gets to some predefined limit?

I agree. It's good to have a solid $200 option in the Forerunner line up. I know a lot of people get sticker shock when they think Garmin and for them... The Forerunner 55 exists.
The GPS is fine for cycling. The only disadvantage is that you can't pair cycling power sensors to the Forerunner 55. Aside from that it will do the job!
Instinct Solar purely because it has breadcrumb navigation features, a barometer, and compass widget. If you're just looking record tracks the FR55 will do the job as well.
Yeah that's very odd about the HIIT! I assumed they would segment HIIT to the Vivo series for some odd reason but this Forerunner has it? Yet the flagship forerunner does not? Hmm.
I'm actually considering buying a smartwatch to help me improve my running. I've been running on a treadmill for about a year now but could definitely use some metrics and plans to help me challenge myself and improve. I was looking at this option as well as the Huawei GT Runner. Have you had a chance to review the latter? The older HR sensors on the 55 is something I didn't know about and makes me somewhat skeptical.
I don’t have a ton of experience with swim HR but from what I’ve heard it’s somewhat hit or miss with most of these HR sensors. For the best accuracy something like the HRM Swim is recommended!
The Forerunner 245 still has the upper hand in a few departments. Training Load, and the ability to have music on board, the new Sleep Widget coming soon as it's been in beta for some time now and the 245 also has a "trail running" activity profile that features Trail VO2 Max estimation... Again, still in beta. The 745 gets all of the above but also has a true triathlon/multi-sport mode. Oddly thought, the 745 has the worst battery life of the three. The Forerunner 55 is still an excellent watch at $200 bucks though.
Im thinking of getting this once it goes on sale somewhere, but I'm wondering what happens when you connect a new watch to Garmin connect. Does it just have all the data of my old watch straight away or do you have to do something to get the old data on the new watch?
With modern day Garmins they use something called "True-up" that syncs data accross multiple devices. So you should have all of your historical data on the new watch.
This watch is a big step up from the 45 and I like the HIIT profile that's included. Good video! It's an interesting value assessment by Garmin compared to Coros.

Great review. Do you know if it's possible to change the battery when it gets old? How many years would you say a battery holds before you have to buy a new watch/battery? I really don't get why Garmin excludes software features between models. It wouldn't cost them anything to incorporate them. Let the cost difference be driven by HR monitor, battery, materials... hardware. Now it's like, yeah i want that one feature that this doesn't have but then i have to pay double or triple the price.
Garmin doesn't offer the ability to swap batteries unfortunately. Most modern watches have a life span of around 3-5 years depending on use before you'll start to see a degradation of the battery and it won't hold a charge. In terms of software features it actually DOES cost them money to include certain things that are available on higher end watches. Features like Body Battery, training load, recovery, etc... are licensed from a developer so they need to increase the device cost to cover the licensing cost. Consider it like buying a laptop that comes barebones without windows or MS Office, versus another laptop that does include software but costs a bit more. Hope that helps!
@@ChaseTheSummit i dont want to a watch where it doesn’t serve the basic purpose of showing time 😅 for which i have to charge it everyday. Also tracking my occasional runs, strength workouts, HIIT, yoga, cycling would be an added advantage. Probably ill go with 55.
It's completely bullshit that they model-lock stuff like Training Load. It's the same as Strava's "Relative Effort" which is completely hardware agnostic.
You've got to look at it from the perspective that the software isn't free. Features like training load, focus, and other tools are licensed from FirstBeat. The License costs Garmin money. So Garmin has to charge more in order to cover the cost of the software licensing on the device. With more features also requires more storage so that increases the chip cost. And some features take more CPU power than others which again increases overall cost. That said, they certainly do segment their watches in a weird way. I do wish there were less models to choose from and a more clear cost breakdown of what you're getting. Thanks for watching.
