"What was the picture?" "Let's just call it a Ghost Cat, Walter Mitty." I love this line even more once you see what the picture was at the end of the movie. No one noticed Walter, or his work, earlier in the film when that picture was taken, but then again, *beautiful things don't ask for attention.*
Definitely!! I feel like a lot of cinematic footage here on youtube or other areas are very similar in asthetic in some ways. The filters, the shots, the travel angles, etc. are all phenominal.
Movie criticism seems arbitrary sometimes. I seem to remember that some critics complained about the fact that it was a remake, and that they couldn’t really see what warranted it. Then again, A Star Is Born is remade a third time and every critic loves it, even though it hardly revolutionised the original story. A good movie is a good movie.
As someone who has always had his head in the clouds I really wanted to see this movie. While not exactly what I was expecting, I ended up loving this movie & it's a shame it's so underrated. Very inspiring and Stiller does some pretty cool creative stuff with his direction.
@@JamesVSCinema your might be the first I stumble across. Dude, keep up the great videos, great movie selection and etc. Sometime soon I might get a patreon and watch a full movie with you. wish you success!
I like the way they tell the story through Walter's appearance, makeup and lighting; in the beginning he looks older, grey haired, wearing grey, pale face... and as soon as he starts his journey he starts to have more color in his wardrobe and face. By the end he looks so much younger, more vivid face color, dresseses and looks like an adverturer. Very close to his imagined iceclimbing self. But without the sunburn and the hairstyle. And the cheesy sentences.
And another thing, they actually saturated colors as the movie went on to make them more vibrant. Which is exactly like how Walter Mitty had all these experiences that made his life more vibrant.
I did not expect this movie to be so dang heartwarming. I joke about this movie a bit even though I liked it, like when I explain the movie to other people who haven’t seen it I call the movie “Ben Stillers Vanilla sky” or “Scott pilgrim vs adult responsibilities”. I had seen the original film and read the short story years ago and this is so well done, it’s new while staying in touch with the stuff that came before. Thanks for the video James, take care. P.S. what Walter has is called maladaptive daydreaming. It’s tough stuff. And this depicts it really well.
I love the moment where he doesn't take the picture. So many people today only experience anything cool through the lens of their phone camera now, whether its a concert, or a vista, or whatever. People are so focused on making sure their Insta life looks dope they miss out on living their actual damn lives. I rarely if ever photograph or record the great moments of my life. I want to be fully in those moments and experience them. This also then allows me to look back on them with the hazy fondness of nostalgia and keep those moments legendary in my mind. No picture can ever look as beautiful as my imperfect memory of something.
And also such an unexpected thing. I love that the whole film is basically proving to us why he deserves that and yet the entire time we're convinced it's some incredible nature shot. It's really well done. It's sometimes hard to explain to people why this film is so good. It's not really a traditional main stream film. Has much more of a film festival/independent feel to it, but it works so beautifully.
This movie is hella underrated, don't see many people talking about it. Never related to a movie like i did to this movie, sadly mostly the daydreaming part. As always great vid.

It's crazy this was bassically about maladaptive daydream disorder, and looking back at it.....I understand the feeling of losing time and driving into daydreams. It's exhausting sometimes 🙄
This movie ain't perfect, but somehow it grabbed me emotionally in a way unlike any film I've watched. It influenced me to not just explore the world, but to find the small yet beautiful things in life and to appreciate the hardworking people that never got the praise and respect they deserved, simply because their work seems "insignificant" by others. Really glad you enjoyed this movie. Keep it up.

I watched this when it first came out and felt bad that the reviews were so mixed. It felt like a genuine and beautiful film that i though was so well done, Ben Stiller really shined in it. It deserved better reviews for sure.
I nearly cried at the end. He is the snow cat in this proverbial news drama. He see's seen it all, in the end he lives it all. Great shout out to reporters.
There is this moment with Kristen Wiig's character that is just so at-the-heart of this beautiful film. When on stage in the bar dedicating the song to Walter, she tilts her head just slightly after saying "...he knows why." It's just this personal moment between two people as if to say, yeah, I can see you, and you can see me. Ugh, I'm sure a more articulate person could pinpoint it better, but oh well, it's still a massively beautiful and subtle moment. This is one of a few films that I put under the category: 'well that was just an honour and a privilege to watch, thank you!'
I was thinking the movie was pretty reminiscent of The Apartment and then Shirley MacLaine popped up as Walter's mother! I love when my hunches are right. 🥰
24:15 indeed. Shout out to the Sherpa. In my country they have been hired and flown over to build trails with rocks in the mountains. Really amazing what they can do.
I’m so glad this movie is starting to get more recognition. But even if it didnt, Beautiful things don’t ask for attention. When you look at it though the lense of mental health it’s super positive making something for yourself and being proactive, it’s a really positive look on masculinity. Other films like Fight Club, American Animals or Joker have have some parallels but in a much more negative spin, men who are struggling mentally, have no where to go in life just waiting for something to happen and then finding a negative outlet but Walter Mitty finds the beauty in life, it’s really inspiring.

This movie really hits close to home for me. A part of me is embarrassed to say that I zone out almost as vivid as walt and the other half feels like at least it's a better escape from things compared to drugs or alcohol
Now you gotta watch the original, with Danny Kaye. Great comedy from the 40's based on James Thurber's short story. Danny Kaye is BRILLIANT, especially in the musical numbers where his unique talent for vocal gymnastics really shines! By the way, very little of either film is in the original short story. That was just about an afternoon that Walter spends doing errands, and how he'd get caught up in glorious daydreams as he goes from store to store picking up the stuff his mom wants. Kaye's film starts with that premise and then branches off into its own amazing, hilarious tale. :)
I grew up watching the Danny Kaye original from the 40's (50's?) but this is one of the very few times that a remake/reimagining far outshines the original.
This movie was so good. Stiller is such a talented actor and director. It is shot absolutely beautifully. Someone did a breakdown of the shots and why they are so pretty and good a few years ago. Amazing watch. Just such a heartwarming story. I love how he has these incredible fantasies at the start but when he actually goes out into the world, his real adventures are far more fantastical and amazing than anything he could possibly dream up. From the huge to the tiny little moments he experiences. This film is one of my favorites.
Legit my favorite movie! Since first watching it I went to Iceland because how could you not?! I went to Australia, I climbed mountains all over the western part of the US and Canada, and I've invested in myself and my future to become the photographer I want to be. I'm happy to say it's turned out great and a lot of it has to do with this movie and it's ability to wake up my nomadic side. I've always been a person who wanted to go out and do things like this but this movie really pushed it over the edge and I think about it everyday. I'm glad you found it because it's not a movie that many people have heard of unfortunately.
Okay a few things I don’t see mentioned below. the entire film aside from the city was shot in Iceland including the Afghanistan shots. the red car blue car deal is a reference to red pill blue pill in the matrix. Now the part that I’m qualified for in the language department. the first word you hear in Icelandic, Eyjafjallajökull is just eyja (aye ya) fjalla (feeyat-la) jökull (yuh kut-L) means island mountain glacier and is the name of the volcano that erupted a few years ago irl. Then In the scene with the kids, you’ll here kominn inn I bíll (koe-men in ee beel) (get in the car ‘beint’ added in just means come straight into the car, let’s fuckin go), the longboard itself says ‘Lífið’ (lee-vith) which means Life (ties directly in with the theme / name of the magazine), and when the kids are debating what to do they’re actually talking about how ‘Hann veit ekki hvað eldgos þýðir’ (han vayt eckih kvath eldgoes thee-thir) (‘he doesn’t know what eldgos means’, hilarious once again) and then the two boys say ‘Gera það’ (gare-ah thoth) Which just means ‘do it’. Eldgos obviously means eruption as you now know hahahaha. Hope this helps! /friendlyneighborhoodIcelandicamerican
I still can’t fathom why some critics did not like this film! I’ve watched this multiple times and I still get goosebumps (and teary eyed) whenever I see the final issue. Great reaction, btw.
I'm bending all of your videos now. I'm really enjoying your outlook on film and everything. I love how much you appreciate movies and the work that goes into them.
I have to watch this movie every year just to remind myself to stop dreaming and start doing things. I relate so much with Walter. The film is beautiful, the score is amazing and the photo reveal makes me cry everytime.
This movie was in preproduction hell for almost 2 decades! I read this story as a freshman in high school in 1996. Shortly after, I was thrilled to discover a movie adaptation was already in production with Jim Carrey as lead! I was stupefied when I finally saw a commercial for it 16+ years later...
So you never saw the original film? I'm amazed your high school teacher didn't recommend you guys find a copy and watch it! It was on video, so it wasn't even difficult to find back then. (It is now, though.)
@12:10 the boot glass is meant to be a staple of beer drinking in europe, but fictional from what i've read, to sell to frats. the glass is more prevalent in the comedy film, beer fest the song, "major tom," is sung by the late, great, david bowie
Never actually seen this one, sometimes your reviews hype me up enough to watch one. I guess I’ll give this one a chance! (Currently watching your reaction)
Super underrated movie. One of my all time favourites. Have seen it close to 20 times. I love the cinematography, how every shot could be paused and appear picture perfect. Composition is stunning. Glad you watched this, mate.
I love this movie. I didn't like the beginning with all the random fake scenes, but it felt like a necessary evil to set the stage of him actually breaking out into the real world.
When I was writing my thesis at university I was also recording my ideas on my phone. It was much easier to remember everything I wanted to write down later. This is such an amazing movie, so inspirational and makes you think of how you want to live your life. Thank you for the reaction!
A stunt double was used for the longer shots of the longboarding scene, but Ben Stiller did the close-ups (with wires attached). Also, the bottom of the longboard says LIFIÐ, which is "Life" in Icelandic.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words and I feel like every frame of this movie embodies that statement. Not even just visually but the acting and sound/music is perfect. A Quintessence one might say.
Thank you for doing this review, James. This movie has a special place in my heart as I saw it during a very difficult time in my life and it allowed me to laugh and smile for a couple hours.
I read the story of Walter Mitty in high school. I didn't see this movie until 2 days ago and I've gotta say, this is my favorite Ben Stiller movie now. I think this is one of my favorite movies in general. It's a real piece of art.
Fun fact, the words you couldn't understand, 'eyjafjallajökull' was the volcano that erupted in Iceland 2010 and halted all or most of all air traffic around Europe. And most of the film that was recorded outside of the U.S. was filmed in Iceland. Even the one that was suppose to take place in Afghanistan. I highly recommend for anyone to travel to Iceland, such and amazing place!!
brrrrrooooo, so happy you did this reaction. not alot of people I know like it, but it is easily in my top 5 favorites. this whole movie was adapted from a simple short story about a man day dreaming in his truck.
I have watched it in the movies without even knowing what's it about and it resonated with me so deeply I have cried in the theater and watched it for the second time the next day again. I can't objectively tell if its a good movie or not but for me its one of the movies I watch when I'm at my lowest.
It’s a great freakin movie man happy you got a chance to see it. It tanked in the box office and it didn’t receive much positive criticism, but it’s one of my favorite movies may even be one of my favorite Ben Stiller movies of all time. I saw this film back in school where I was day dreaming a lot of the time about the life I wanted to be leading, I was so incredibly depressed and internally lonely even when I was around people. I’ve always felt just inadequate in the main dane lifestyle we as a society we’re always leading day by day. Not too much has changed since I’ve been out of school with the day dreaming and depression, but I related a lot to Walter Mitty and the film just really spoke to my spirit. I’m not religious nor have I given up on hope but I do believe I was destined to do something meaningful both for the world and myself. I want to be free.
This movie was the best kept secret from me. It came out and I knew nothing about it and said "fuck it" and gave it a watch strictly because of Ben Stiller. It is now one of my all time favorites. Its just so damn good and the way its shot is just so unique that it makes it stand out.
This movie is one of may 2 favorite movie, its sensibility touched me on another level, Mitty connected to me like no other character in any other movie characters, the photo the simple sensitivity has never stopped growing in me. I'm happy that it touched you and hope many more will. Finally if you want to see the single other movie I like as much as this one: "loving Vincent" aout Vincent Van Gogh
Thank you for reminding me about the movie. I loved it when it first came out. And what I loved the most was that the final picture was worth the reveal. Loved your commentary. You're very good at reading the characters subconscious trying to come through--there was another reaction film you made insightful call that was true.
I am a film photographer and the movie somehow touched me at that time I saw it on tv. But it has also triggered wanderlust in me, which I have not yet been able to satisfy. Glad to see your reaction to it and that we share so many opinions.
I absolutely loved this film. I think a lot of people hated the product placement, but to me it fit the language of the movie. I also loved how the story felt like it took place entirely in it's own world. The story didn't feel specifically grounded, but that's what I loved about it. The entire movie felt like a daydream, which makes sense given the main character.
Also, I find it kinda funny that people call out this movie for product placement when arguably the entire plot is one big product placement for Life magazine. Again, it fits the language of the movie for there to be product placement.

I've always been a person who wanted to go out and do things like this but this movie really pushed it over the edge and I think about it everyday. I'm glad you found it because it's not a movie that many people have heard of unfortunately.
Gosh I forgot how beautiful this movie is and what a powerful message it has! Great video bro!
This is a kind of remake of the 1947 original staring Danny Kaye that is more of light comedy rather than a more realistic tone this is.
Came to say same. And the movies are based on the short story of the same name by James Thurber.
That was so fun & helpful! Thanks for sharing 👍
This is my most favorite film ever, I never hear anyone talk about this movie and I’m glad it’s getting a little more attention that it deserves
For the life of me, I cannot figure out why this got so many bad reviews. An unloved jewel.
I’ve been watching for a couple of months and I don’t understand how he doesn’t have a million subscribers yet. Keep up the great work!!
The movie invokes wanderlust, it made me realize I had no excuse to not explore when the Rocky Mountains are only half an hour away
@@Serai3 We didn’t really spend a lot of time on this story.. it was an honors class; we spent months on great expectations, though!
It’s no surprise they shot a lot of this in Iceland, probably the most beautiful and photogenic country on the planet.
@12:10 the boot glass is meant to be a staple of beer drinking in europe, but fictional from what i've read, to sell to frats. the glass is more prevalent in the comedy film, beer fest
the song, "major tom," is sung by the late, great, david bowie
My favorite film of all time.
This one, and Hector and the Search for Happiness are two films that always inspire and motivate me. A beautiful reflection on experiences and life.
Never actually seen this one, sometimes your reviews hype me up enough to watch one.
I guess I’ll give this one a chance!
(Currently watching your reaction)
Stop the reaction. Watch the movie. Then comeback to the reaction!
Hahaha that’s awesome it’s good!
@@Justwalks since the intro is really good, I just did that haha!
Thanks for the advice my friend.
By far my favorite film reaction channel. Great stuff, man! keep it up!
Also, the bottom of the longboard says LIFIÐ, which is "Life" in Icelandic.
the song at 15:17 is David Bowie - Space Oddity
dude... go to Iceland. This movie brought me there for 2 weeks. You will not regret it.
Lmao that was actually Rodney Mullen! He was the stunt double 😳😳🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
No way!!
James i loved this movie when I first watched it but I could see how someone could not like the film now but I still love it
They say a picture is worth a thousand words and I feel like every frame of this movie embodies that statement.
10:41 omg the Rodney Mullen reference lit my face up!!!! So happy you know who that is!!!
I have watched it in the movies without even knowing what's it about and it resonated with me so deeply I have cried in the theater and watched it for the second time the next day again. I can't objectively tell if its a good movie or not but for me its one of the movies I watch when I'm at my lowest.
So happy you picked this one!!! One of my favs. I'm serious. I've given Dvds of this movie as gifts to people 😂💕
"YO! Ben Stiller just did a kick flip."
The rest of the film: Hold my boot-beer."
This movie is one of may 2 favorite movie, its sensibility touched me on another level, Mitty connected to me like no other character in any other movie characters,
the photo the simple sensitivity has never stopped growing in me.
This is my favorite movie ever. Don’t know why, but it has a special place in my heart. Thanks for the reaction!
I highly recommend to watch The Chronicles of Narnia😍
