This explains why placer gold may or may not trap out under a waterfall. Also, check out SourdoughMiner.com/20-20/ for more details on how placer gold deposits are formed by flowing water.

Been waiting for this for a long time. Worth the wait, thanks again for the schooling!

Nice! We dredged out a waterfall plunge pool last summer. The hydrodynamics were wild! We found the gold but it sure wasn't where we thought it would be.

ColoradoGoldCamp what areas did you find it if you don’t mind me asking? Thanks

That's the core lesson. With turbulence goes turbulent gold traps.

@@foolsgold1118 We did pull a few nice nuggets pounded deep into beckrock cracks at the base of the falls. I'm talking prying off 2-3ft deep of beckrock! Think "blowout"

The most fascinating placer deposit story I ever saw was on one of the "Gold Fever" episodes, where Tom Massie talked about how he and his father, Buzzard Massie, dived and dredged in a glory hole below a waterfall in the California Motherload country. They were certain there was gold there because the old timers never had the ability to dam and divert the water in above the waterfall, in fact there were several miners killed trying to damn the river, but they ended up giving up. The hole was deep and had the effect of your second scenario. Buzzard and Tom found pounds of nuggets, some the size of baseballs!

This was great information. I have 2 waterfalls I plan checking out with dive gear. If the bottoms look good, I’ll set up a gravity suction dredge into a sluice. Thanks for your wisdom.

So, the larger rocks' locations would help you figure out which type the waterfall is. And maybe if it's a rolling type you could wait for dry season (or low water) before risking it.

It's OK to observe high flow from afar (with a camera) spot boil and eddy patterns for later and safer low flow investigation.

Take up fishing. Youl soon learn to recognise bottom formation from surface features. Creases. boils. And other turbulence show areas of low pressure even in the fastest of flows.

Awesome Awesome Awesome!! This was exactly what I wanted to learn about. Thank you so much sir 👍X1000.
    - I can't figure out how to send you a picture of the waterfall I was talking about. So I will use my wife's FaceBook account a little later.....🙃

@@ProspectorJess we ran a 4" flex hose the full 100' just out of a creek and WOW! 4 to 1 drop and we put a turbine/pump off the dredge and motor did a reducer pulley to generator had more power then we could use. Ended up putting a valve up top to regulate the intake flow. I miss that ole man taught me alot of off grid and old school ways of mining and building and life.....
