I grew up in a single mom household without cable. PBS taught me how to cook. When my mother passes and I think about my favorite time with her, it would be us two on the sofa watching Julia Child while smelling beef stew in cast aluminum in the oven. I adore that Julia does not hold back in this, even in her nineties - teaching a chef the proper ways, standing up for herself, forever an amazing woman. Julia and Mom taught me how to cook, not out of a cookbook, but why we use certain tools, how we cut things, how things are treated. Julia and the collar....My heart.
As a kid growing up in the hood my mom didn't want me hanging out in the streets. Staying home I had to entertain myself and Julia was part of that. I am the cook in my home as a grown man and its because of Julia. This is a masterpiece of 2 of the greats. 31:49 american icon...shes all about the prep, the meal and serving. Thats how you show love to yourself and family by cooking with respect and good ingredients.
Emeril Lagasse trained under Julia Child, and I'm glad he was thoughtful enough to have her appear on a few of his shows. Rest in peace, Julia Child. We will never forget you!

For sure. I wrote a paper out her in school. That is how important she was to me. I do not know her personally but she did encourage and inspire me. I would like to have known she would have liked me as well,.
Emeril did not train with Julia Child. He appeared on her Master Chef show on PBS in the early 1990s before he was famous. He was one of many chefs to be inspired by her work, however, and wrote of his admiration of her in the 40th anniversary edition of Mastering the Art of French Cooking that was released back in 2001 while she was still living and he was still relevant.

Dehillerin cooking store in Paris where she used to shop. Emeril now sells cheap processed pasta sauce and appears on infomercials to sell air fryers.

I love this. can someone explain to me why food channel/pbs don't do cooking shows like this anymore? I don't want food competitions. I want talented people making food in real time. The audience/live presentation is not necessary but defiantly kicks it up a notch!!!

I remember wanting to make a mango ice cream...and he said "and you add some a this and some a that and happy happy bam bam bam kick it up a knotch happy bam bam bam." The audience than shrieked and screamed like trained seals. I had no idea how to make that ice cream....and I never watched Emeril Live again. Nope....Sara Moulton, Alton Brown...and Julia Child's reruns were who I learned from an Food Network when it was still worth watching.
As big as Emeril Lagasse has become, it is a pleasure to see such honour and respect for one who is older. No questions, if she said it should be off heat, the heat went off immediately. Prompt response. We could all learn from Emeril about humility and about honour! Thank you for a wonderful show, and wonderful life lesson not just cooking!!!

I'm so glad I was born in 1999. I grew up these classic Food Network shows and watched it grow into the competition network it is now. Revisiting the old shows again, I still can't believe this show came from the same network that seems to think baking competitions are all we ever want to see. Seriously. I think there's more baking/sweet competition shows than the savory ones.
Emril Live, Good Eats, and the Iron Chef Japan. I used to watch those show religiously when I was in middle school. It made me want to really explore cooking.
I love how she started in a chair, plate and all, as a special guest; but then the chair was behind the counter - and then she was a chef along with him. So tough to not do the thing you love and to just watch someone else do it 💙
I also think that Emeril's help and dedication to the people of New Orleans after Katrina make him a candidate and one of the greatest chefs on earth. Thanks Emeril. You are a great person. God bless you.
I used to watch this with my great grandma and grandpa before bed when I was a little boy. I miss my grandparents and hope everyone here has some happy memories that they can look back on the way I do

Emeril is a great chef but you couldn't beat cooking with a true legend of French and American homestyle cooking than Julia Child! I learned many great recipes through my father and 2 grandmothers' but basic kitchen lessons came from listening to what Julia said, she always kept it so simplistic!
Imagine what a treat it was for emeril to have his great friend and mentor the one and only mrs. Julia Child to cook with him. Admittedly a little intimidating as well.
Julia started real cooking shows. You kept it up. I remember watching both of you. You got me started my love of cooking. I am passing this passion to my children and grandchildren. Thank you.

Most memorable show was a special appearance over seas when you went to cook for the troops over Holiday time. I'll NEVER forget that 10 foot long huge sifter you came out with too sift the powder sugar over something which I can't remember now but my God you had me laughing in stitches so hard. I loved it and so did our troops over seas!!!! I love ya man, you're a WONDERFUL human being brother!!!

Sometimes when I think about how sad it must have been for Julia never to have had children with her beloved husband I think of all the joy she has brought to generations of new cooks and chefs .

1992-2008 was in my opinion the Golden Age of Cable TV, and this show was probably the most notable cooking show of that era.

Julia truly was a one of a kind lady & she had such a wonderful presence….thank you for all the fabulous recipes, belly laughs & your humorous joy of life…..now a few tears that you’ve left us

Can anyone imagine how nervewracking it must have been to cook in front of Julia Child? I mean, she's cordial and just plain adorable, but cooking in front of her must have been like competing in the Olympics!
Even here it seemed that Emeril was a bit nervous.
I think he did great. And treated her with affection, admiration, reverence and respect.
Lovely, lovely lady who for a woman stood at a regal and statuesque 6'2" tall.
My grandmother here in Wales was a great fan of Julia's and so am I.
