The Most Impure Tale Ever Written: The 120 Days of Sodom

  • We all have our favourite artists.
Whether they paint, direct, write, perform, act, or all of the above, there are certain types of artists that appeal to us in a way that inspire devotion to their every move in their chosen field.
You don’t necessarily have to like every move they make. Sometimes the artist makes a misstep - a bad album, movie, book, whatever - but it doesn’t necessarily knock them down from the pedestal you had placed them on.
However, sometimes an artists’ misstep can amount to much greater consequences than a bad review. Sometimes the “misstep” is off a cliff.
In recent times the exposing of degenerate acts by prominent figures has become a frequent occurrence. I can think of many high-profile celebs within the last year that have been shown to harbour more sinister desires than their overly friendly face and demeanour would lead you to believe.
Artists are no different. I’m sure the majority watching has discovered something undesirable about their favourite painter, director, writer, actor, or musician, at some point.
But that is when you are led to the age-old question that must be pondered in such a scenario as this: do you separate the art from the artist?
I would have to assume that separating the art from the artists is the more common approach.
But sometimes an artists’ views and/or actions (for good or ill) are so entwined within their work that separating their paintings, movies, books, or albums from themselves is impossible.
And nowhere is separating the art from the artist as impossible to do as it is with the Marquis de Sade, and particularly, in his infamously disturbing tale: The 120 Days of Sodom.

I don’t know why but this reminds me of that South Park episode where the boys read Catcher in the Rye and they write their own story The Tale of Scroddy McBoogerBalls and the adults read it and claim it’s the best book they ever read

When a paraphilic mental disorder is named after you, that is how you gain infamy.
Corporal Punishment, you might create a neurotic member of society, or you may create the first sadist.

When I'm sick, I like to read stuff about other people being sick. It feels good to commiserate, or remember that it could be much worse. This, however, seems like it would have the opposite effect. Attempting to power through your nausea like that shows strength that I do not have.
Why would you do that to yourself.

I really enjoy your videos, and I appreciate that this didn’t devolve into sensationalizing De Sade. It’s clear you put a lot of thought and effort into the topics you cover. It’s refreshing.

The “book” is so over the top in its disgusting depictions that, dare I say, it’s pretty boring to read. The film is actually tame compared to the book, but it is hard to watch.

    • @theblackcatgirl7013
      @theblackcatgirl7013 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

Calling it "so over the top it's boring" would have crushed the author and he deserves every bit of it.

I actually have to agree. I read it, several times just to make sure I had a comprehensive understanding of what I was reading, and yeah. It's disgusting, depraved, downright psychotic, and painfully boring the same way edgy teenagers are.

I saw a movie review about this and saw some of the clips it was crazy I don’t think I can sit through the whole film. I do wonder how doing that impacted the actors and actresses though.

I watched the movie with a friend and there was a lot of pausing and just sitting in silence of what we were watching. I don’t remember much of it now I locked it away in a vault I just remember sitting in silence with my friend and feeling disgusted. The only reason we watched it cause we heard it was ‘banned’ but idk if that was true now

For an 18th-century French lit seminar, we had to write a final paper on any author of the period. None of the others grabbed me too much, and I thought De Sade at least sounded different. "It's the 1700s,," I thought. "How twisted can it be?" WOWZA. I have a very high bar for being disgusted or shocked but holy cow! And it was so funny that amidst all the perversion, there were philosophical treatises trying to justify it all.

Why did he commit himself to writing such a horrific vulgar acts of sexual violence was it simply to shock the audience??
    was it that juvenile??
    what were his actual INTENTIONS??
The actions themselves aren't as interesting as the INTENTIONS and PHILOSOPHY behind it.

Nurture is very important in our lives much more than nature. It’s sad and pathetic to see what people can become.
