Those coldwater bottles really are lifesavers for my pigs. I live in the netherlands and dont have ac and we had some bad heatwaves last years. They really love those bottles!
When you have no AC you can put a bowl of water in the freezer .then put it in a bigger bowl in front of the fan .Let the air blow over the ice. The ice will melt and cool the air. At the end of the day you have a big amount of water but you can cool a certain area around the cage. I used this when my dad was sick so the area around the bed was cool.
I do these things for my piggies, frozen bottles with socks and flat ice packs with socks but no body is interested in laying on them but it at least cools the habitat temperature down.
I wish I had known about this. I lost my beautiful skinny pig, Penny, on July 1st. I wasn't sure why/how she died but now I'm pretty sure it was heat stroke. Thank you for always caring about these wonderful littles. I miss my baby girl. I will be freezing some water bottles!
I had guinea pigs for many years for my big family. The kids learned so much about caring for these gentle little animals. Good thing I’m not there, I’d adopt that little cutie right away!
I want to say thank you. I watched this and not 2 days later. Our A/C went out and frozen water bottles saved my girls. Want to let you know how much you have saved me and my girls
Daddy Pig (he needs a better name) is the furthest from the AC vent, so I gave him a frozen bottle in a couple socks. He's been happily snoozing next to it. The girls have one each also, but none of them are interested. Busy hiding together under the hiding area. But they demolish their vegetables and hay happily. The babies love pellets, the 3 older pigs aren't sure, but our vet will be by for a house call tomorrow and check them.
I agree and we always have power outages in the summer. This is great information. I need to start collecting some water bottles now, so I will be ready for this summer.
Hey Saskia, a month or two ago I recommended the frozen water bottle to a friend because I saw you use this method before. My friendhas bunnies and it worked really well for them. Thanks for the big tip. :)
Thanks for posting. I have a extra freezer to keep blue ice for piggies. I always leave a blue ice in the cage when I'm out. Never know if power or air conditioner will go out. Living in Tucson you need to protect piggies from heat.
Very good information. I knew about the water bottles and the tiles but I learned about using alcohol. Being informed means healthy and happy piggies. Great video. Keep up the good work. 😀💖
Thank you with the tip with the water bottle. The bottle wrapped in, in a dishtowel, and two clothespins to hold the rest, my boys now have a small cooling tent
We are currently at the start of a heatwave where I am and we have 4 long haired piggies, a texel, merino and two which we call ‘funky’ because we aren’t sure of the breed we think maybe Peruvian crosses, so this is really helpful! Thank you! I love this channel because its so informative and helpful! Rescuing is such a beautiful thing! X
Excellent video with really good information. I was watching last week when that heatstroke piggie came in. Very stressful and everyone did a great job of bringing him back. 😀🐾
I didn; think he would make it but he did!!!!! Tomorrow is hot again - I really hope everyone reads the heat advisory email we send out the night before
Hi Saskia. Sorry it's a long one. Thank you for sharing this all important information. Hearing you talk about the watery veggies I want to tell you my experience when I purchased my 2nd boy from a well know large chain of pet stores here in the UK, don't shoot me down for it, I was in there buying other stuff for my first piggie Buddy. But when I saw this piggie in the cage I just felt so sorry for him, he was begging to get out of there. Anyway, so this guy was reading a list of stupid questions from the stores ipad and I was informed at the point of sale NOT to feed him lettuce, cucumber or celery as it takes more energy to eat it than it gives back, seriously? no mention of the liquid the piggies get from them. But they can have as many carrots as they want, again, seriously? I actually stood there and argued the fact that they can have these things and carrots are a sweet veg so need to be careful how much is fed and where the hell do they get trained because it needs to be changed. I am horrified at the thought of the amount of piggies being sold, with this misinformation, that are out there possibly/probably suffering. It breaks my heart. But I love my boys dearly and thanks to you and Scotty I successfully bonded them together. I watched so many of your videos before I got my first one coz I wanted to ensure that I could give them what they need. Anyway, I just want to thank you again for the great work you and your team do and for the information you provide. So for this I thank you. Best regards from UK. xx
Hi Lou, we had a VERY similar experience when buying our first lot of boars from Pets at Home and have found that many vets here have a Non-Exotics background. The advice we have been given varies SO greatly and we've found Saskia and some excellent online Pig Sites who have taught us how to really help our boys. Our vets know us well and we always have a good chat through the options before we agree to a course of treatment. We have seen the odd Exotics vet over the years but they move around SO much. So glad that you've found the right information for your Pigs, you sound like a wonderful pig-slave! X
KaelaLee Daley Hi, haha pig slave, yes definitely. I am a bit restricted with good exotic vets as I live on the Isle of Wight. But I really was appalled with the P@H advice when I bought my second wee piggie. My first piggy, Buddy, I got from a woman who had had babies and mine was the only boy. I love them both so much. Have you also found Scottys Animals, Skinnypigs1 and Squeak Dreams (I think) on YT? I am also on a few gp Facebook pages two of which are uk based. But Saskia and Scotty are my go to's for information. Thanks for the reply. Wheek wheek 😁
!! Regarding fans !! Point the fan at an open window. This intakes the stale, hot are of the room and blows it out the window. This helps reduce the temperature of the room. Remember, fans do not cool the room or animals. It feels cooling to us because it increases the rate the sweat evaporates off of us. This isn’t something that guinea pigs will experience. It’ll just feel like the same hot air to them. The water on the ear trick is a good one, I carried it over from when I had my rescue Chinchilla. They overheat A LOT easier, and wetting my fingers and rubbing the backs of the ears did wonders when they were feeling warm (not necessarily at heatstroke level, but you can tell they’re warm). I occasionally do this to my guinea pigs on hot days. I’ll feel their ears to see how warm they feel. If they feel warm, I put a dab of water on the backs of their ears with my fingers. I’m in the U.K., so I invested in a portable AC just for their room. It’s not cheap, but worth it. I also have giant flat ice packs with custom made fleece covers for them to lay on if needed :) My boys don’t seem to use the tiles. One of them tries to chew on it and I’m worried about his teeth, because he tugs on it as he chews 😕
Thank you. I needed this information. This summer has been so hot and without central AC I worry all the time about my babies. I've spent a lot of the summer collecting resources on how to make sure they stay safe.
Not long ago, the power was out all night at my apartment in St. Louis. What I did to keep my guinea pigs cool was I used those little things you put in lunch boxes. I aim to get a battery operated fan though so if it happens again, I can use the fan as well.

Are you preparing to do a video upon the best pet carriers for guinea pigs and the outlets where they can be found? I couldn't help but to notice the carrier near Tallulah!
This electrolyte stuff sadly is not a thing in germany atleast not where i am so ppl think about getting that before its rly needed.!! And the alcohol cools because it dilates the blood vessels like making them a lil tipsy.? Or is it because it evaporates rly fast like making them a walking ,wheeking swamp cooler ? I think understanding how it rly works is importand to make especially newer owners confident enough to use it if its rly needed. (Newer owner here that is a little bit confused and intimidated about putting Alkohol on my small pets).
Brilliant ideas, I never thought about spraying a little bit of water on them I put some of the cooling ice blocks in so its similar to using the bottle but I put it under their fleece or under pads they will sleep on They can really heat up inside plastic so any plastic houses take out and put in wooden ones Could you use some Dog cooling blankets? What is the temperature they can get heat strokes? What could you use instead of fleece as the substrate for the carrier?
Can heat stroke cause paralyzed legs in Guinea pigs? I know it may not seem like the two are correlated but I ask because of an experience ♡ If, not what else may cause it Saskia?
Scurvy or bad arthritis. Test for arthritis by feeling how flexible your piggy's joints are. Odds are the feet won't bend. CBD every 4 hrs will help with that. Make sure it's the CBD from Mary's. Saskia has the link. The CBD in other brands is prepared differently and doesn't work very well. Scurvy happens if they don't eat vegetables. Saskia should have those videos labeled so that you can search for them. Cure is daily children's vitamin C and to add veggies to their diet.
@@marieparsons9908 Oh certainly. I'm thinking for actual paralysis that can inflict more than just joints. Something that can happen in only a few hours.
It seems counter intuitive, but LOTS and LOTS of hay, encourage them to eat more hay. The more hay they’re eating, the more water they will drink :) Water in food only goes so far, and too much of it can upset their system and won’t encourage them to drink more regular water. Of course, offer it as a treat. I like to offer a slice for cucumber on occasion (my boys are sensitive to it though, so I have to be strict). It’s also cooler for them to lay on top of hay then it is to lay on top of material.
Just this past Saturday you saved a piggy from a heat stroke. I hope the timestamps I did on Saturdays live were okay. I edited more stuff in them. I see they were Never used. I know you're busy. What about just pin the timestamps as a comment? That way you don't have to edit them in? Just an idea.

Tallulah is the best. Last week when I spot-cleaned her cage and fed her, she popcorned so hard that she bounced off the walls. So hilarious.

@@marieparsons9908 Oh certainly. I'm thinking for actual paralysis that can inflict more than just joints. Something that can happen in only a few hours.
@@fox7378 You're correct. Saskia is gonna have to answer this one for you.
Yes and no, eventually they just don't want to move anymore. Doesn't mean they are paralyzed but just too far gone to move.
It seems counter intuitive, but LOTS and LOTS of hay, encourage them to eat more hay. The more hay they’re eating, the more water they will drink :)
Water in food only goes so far, and too much of it can upset their system and won’t encourage them to drink more regular water. Of course, offer it as a treat. I like to offer a slice for cucumber on occasion (my boys are sensitive to it though, so I have to be strict). It’s also cooler for them to lay on top of hay then it is to lay on top of material.

If you live in the desert, take a towel, soak it, and drape it over the guinea pig's cage too.
I think Pets belong inside! Even Farm Animals should have a Barn or Shelter with Climate Control.

How does that work Brigitte?
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue I just feel like most wont find them. I understand being busy and not being able to edit them in, but I just thought if it was pinned more people would be likely to find it. That's all.
Brigitte, I think I can add them into the description as I have TH-cam editing powers. Why don’t you email me the time stamps weekly so that I can paste them into the description? ❤️❤️
@@averymagana2072 Thank You Avery. I just want people to be able to find them. I know Saskia is very busy, and can't always edit them in. But if it's in the description that will help. I'll email them to you. Thank You.
@@averymagana2072 I just sent two email because when I copied and pasted it didn't come out the way it appears on her wall.
