There is a wider context than this, including in the Quran. Read the following (starting with hadith qudsi first, then coming back to the Quran): Hadith qudsi mentioned in the video, which is number one hadith qudsi at that, can't go in the same sentence with the everlasting Hellfire! For more details on this subject, I humbly suggest reading a Google translate of a tafseer (which is in Bosnian in original), do read it carefully (it starts with 11:106-107-108, which is an even better example that 6:128 I've previously used, as it clearly refers to ALL inhabitants of Hellfire, plus the further explanation, plus more hadith): 'Well, those unfortunates (they) are in hell. They will scream and shout there. They will remain there forever as long as the heavens and the earth last, except your Lord will. Indeed, your Lord does what He wills ”(11: 107-108). This verse emphasizes that the punishment of hell is not eternal. If we compare this last verse with the verse that follows it, then this side becomes even clearer: »> And those who are happy, they are in paradise where they will abide forever, as long as the heavens and the earth last, except your Lord wills. (This is) a gift that cannot be broken ”(11: 109). The expressions in both of these verses are the same. Both the inhabitants of heaven and the inhabitants of hell will remain in their abodes while the heavens and the earth last. One exception is then added to both of these verses. At the end of the verse, it is said that any doubt that one will come out of heaven is removed and that it is a gift that is not interrupted, and when one speaks of hell, it is finally said: "Indeed, your Lord does what He wills." This is also proved by the hadiths of the Prophet of God. One hadith in Sahih-Muslim says: “Almighty God will allow angels, prophets and the orthodox to seek intercession for sinners from Him. Finally, the Most Merciful will remain to share forgiveness, and only a handful of people will come out of hellfire who have never done any good in their lives. And "Sahihi - Bukhari" brings a hadith in which it is said that sinners will be thrown into the "River of Life" when they are taken out of hell. This throwing of sinners into the River of Life emphasizes that they will come to a state that is worthy of a higher life. "Kènzu-ámāl" recorded these hadiths: "There will come a time when hell will be inhabited, and later it will resemble a dried wheat stubble." "> One day will come, so no man will remain in hell." The words of Hadhrat-Umar were also recorded by women: "The inhabitants of hell will be as innumerable as the desert sand, but the time will come and everyone will come out of it."

There is no book called Hadeeth Qudsi, it's just a term to mean a hadeeth in the Sahihayn from spoken words of Allah. So please use the correct reference like I have. Next, the verse in 11:106 talks about those who are Shaqoo, meaning wretched. Define what wretched means for me? Does wretched necessarily mean just unbelievers or everyone? Can people of tawheed also be wretched people? You are ascribing interpretations to Allah without knowledge. Those who are wretched can be both disbelievers and people with a grain of tawheed, thats why its up to Allah if he Wills that they be there eternally or not. Ibn Kathir mentions that when the verse mentions "as long as the heavens and earth endure". it is an Arabic phrase to mean eternity. Ibn Kathir also states that when it says except for Allah wills is in reference to those who are the disobedient people of tawheed. Hasan al Basri says that it could also mean that there will be a new heaven and earth in the New Creation, and everything will be eternal so when it says "as long as heaven and earth endure" could mean eternity. In regards to 11:108, the verse says "a never ending reward at the end" meaning heaven will be eternal, as long as Allah wills. The use of "as long as Allah wills" in the context of heaven is so we dont assume we will get heaven and to keep us on our toes in this life and could also be referring to the Disobedient of the People of Tawheed who will come to heaven. Allahualim. Either way, none of Surah 11 proves that heaven or hell is temporary for all. I'm sorry bro! This argument is non sense. If that's the case then why not put them in hell fire as soon as they reach puberty since they won't be believing in Allah. And also what about putting the muslim dictators in hellfire forever since they would continue to murder if they had eternal life.

Brother Paul, a friendly recommendation. You are a seeker of knowledge and Allah has given you faculty to understand. I dont know if you havent already but have you considered reading the Quran via a tafsir of Great Scholars of the Classical age? There are many, but the one I recommend to start with is Ibn Kathir and there are free online translations of his great work. These scholars have memorised the Quran, many many hadeeth, and understanding of previous scholars who all if not most agree on their status amongst the people of knowledge, all with the understanding of the Arabic language. With these tools and skills that me and you dont have, he explains, verse by verse, the understanding of the Quran drawing on all of that they have learned. He discusses the difference of opinion as well, and suggests what he believes to be the best understanding of a word or a part a verse. It is fascinating and has completely made me look at the Quran in a way more effective and Truthful way. Give it a go, ibn Kathir's tafsir is fairly concise yet detailed and enjoyable for the reader, and recommended for beginners. There are other tafsir like of Imam At-Tabari which is voluminous and the best, so is for advanced students of knowledge. However Ibn Kathir cites many of the other older tafsir works as well.

Agreed. It seems as if according to my thoughts that humans who attribute hell forever use it as a way of otherising other humans to eternal hell because they believe their life is wrong. But I believe Allah's mercy encompasses all beings, no matter how long hell is. I like to think of hell as almost like a hospital, those who are in it are very sick (from their misdeeds of this life) and suffering in order reform them in hell and eventually will be admitted to jannah. Although these are my thoughts, Allah knows best the reality.

Actually Ibn Taymiyyah never argues for that; yes he does mention that opinion and further states the “strong” arguments supporting such a view, but he himself never claims that Hell vanishes or gets annihilated. In fact, he suggested the contrary (i.e., Hell *is* everlasting) in explicit terms, and he agreed upon the consensus of scholars in that regard. I can provide Arabic sources if anyone wants.

Quran also States somewhere that "Hell is worst place to be, even if it is for few moments". And one sahih-hadith that I heard today states The heat of the hellfire is 70 times stronger than fire on this earth. Only this should be sufficient warning for both believers & disbeliever to take Quran seriously, submits & obey Allah and to seek refuge from Hell Fire.
Ah, but the Muslims do not take the concept of shirk far enough. Shirk means there is only God, so no Quran ,Mohammed, Kaaba etc are needed. God has always been present and is not dependent on any prophet for revelation. This is the message of Jiddhu Krishnamurti, who taught people to be a light to themselves. If this is not the case, then there are any number of arbitrary cases where people are 'sent' to hell - in the minds of Muslims - because they have not heard of Islam, were born before Mohammed etc

@@hbk3119 The idea that God punishes is rather flawed ... someone who dies as a cruel person will naturally attract others of the same mentality and indeed create the very conditions for punishment. We are punished by our sins, not for them. If one sees Law as an aspect of God, then by 'breaking' these laws, one simply creates adverse conditions. You can see this in physical laws. In metaphysics... If we were instantly punished for what we did, we would have no free will and no capacity to grow in understanding. I went to a school where caning was still allowed. When the headmaster appeared, there was an instant hush in the class ... but as soon as he left, the innate natures of the pupils quickly came to the fore. So metaphysical laws have to be more subtle, to allow for growth, both good and bad. Life is a school and we are here to learn lessons. The mind creates the after life states that follow as a consequence, not as a punishment. That said, it is obvious that keeping faithful to a genuine path, keeping the company of like minded people and so on is a boon

I really liked ibn taymiya argument that chastisement is for cleansing of the soul therefore endless punishment makes no sense. Universal salvation could be a possibility 🙏
If that was true, then what is the purpose of this life here, and especially of being a muslim. In the end, it doesn't matter if you are muslim or not if universal salvation was at stake. Some sects of christians also hold this belief, Seventh day adventists for one. As seemingly comforting as it may seem, this belief will give confidence to non-muslims, for example, that they can remain as they are. Dangerous teaching... Rethink.
Many muslims are complacent/ lazy and procrastinate in the certainty that they as Muslims will not abide in Hell forever. I feel the descriptions of it are enough for us to be astute in our quest for heaven without account. InshaAllah.
That is not his view, what makes the person think ibn taymiyyah holds it, is the fact that whenever he brings the evidences of his opponents he represents and explains them with great integrity, to the point that you might assume he is advocating for them, and in this case there is no exception, he brought the two views without doing "tarjeeh" or choosing between them, however in another book called "naqd maratib al-ijmaa" which is a critique of ibn hazm's book, when he reached the issue of eternity of hell, ibn hazam reported consensus on it and ibn taymiyyah agreed on that, and this clarifies his position, another factor that helps us understand more is the fact that his brilliant student ibn al-qayyim, has an opinion on the matter too, and he differentates between the hell that would be for disbelievers, and the hell that would be for believers who committed major sins, as we all know, all believers would eventually get out of hell, and ibn Qayyim says they were not with the disbelievers in their hell fire, therefore when the punishment is lifted upon them and they get out from hell to heaven, that hell in which the believers were in would vanish and has an end, because there is nobody in it anymore, but as for the hell that the disbelievers are in, it would not vanish for eternity because the disbelievers' punishment is to suffer in it for ever, and upon this there is consensus. And Allah knows best

As for matters of afterlife, all we need to know is that hellfire is a terrible abode and that we should avoid it by all means. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya clearly mentioned in his book "الرد على من قال بفناء الجنة والنار" (The Refutation of He Who Claims the Extinguishing of al-Janna and a-Nar) that the statement for the extinguishing of them was not said the the Selef, the Sahaba or the Taba'een, but is rather the statement of the Jahamiyya (see page 42 of the Dar Balansiyya printing which is available online). However, he seems to imply at the end of the book that the punishment in the "Nar" will end as that's in accordance with Allah's rahma (literally Mercy) and hikma (literally wisdom) (see page 83 of the same edition) and Allah knows best.
I'm sure that whatever happens to those souls in the hereafter, Allah SWT chose those words for the Quran, because if He stated otherwise, like entering paradise after cleansing the soul of its wrongdoings, unbelievers would have much less motivation to become believers. Well regarding tafsir, Hadith, and aqeedah Ibn Taymiyyah is among the least Orthodox scholars in the history of Islam. There are thousands of scholars who represent orthodoxy and Ibn Taymiyyah is the bottom of the list. He's probably the most extreme controversial figure in Islamic aqeedah The benefit Ibn Taymiyyah had for the ummah was in fiqh, Hanbali madhhab owes him a debt, but most of what he said about Quran Hadith and Aqeedah is wrong sometimes outright deviation bordering on disbelief and this is one example of that

Ibn Taymiyya Not God, Not prophet of God, If Quran says they will be out, they will be out, if say they will be in hell forever they will in forever! Hellfire is not eternal, the word "khalidina" and "abad" it also means for a long time. read also V.128 An-naam in arabic: ila macha allahu which means "except what God wants" (speaking of the length of stay in hell) also in v.107 and 108 (Hud) he says the same thing v23 (an-naba) the prophet mohamed talked about the last men in the hellfire who after he go in paradise. there is other evidence too
With all my respect Ibn Taymmiya could be right and based on what Omar (ra) also said - I have been reviewing this subject for few years and reached the conclusion that hell fire will be extinguished
Adding another opinion in the mix, forgive me if already mentioned. There are some that will remain in the hellfire forever but that doesn't necessarily mean the punishmet, or pain, will be forever.
Another verse: 6:128 The day He will assemble all of them together, (Allah will say to Jinn) “O species of Jinns, you have done too much against mankind.” Their friends from among the human beings will say, “Our Lord, some of us have benefited from others, and we have reached our term that You had appointed for us.” He will say, “The Fire is your Abode wherein you will remain for ever, unless Allah wills (otherwise). Surely, your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.”

Quran 2 :80 The idea of purification for a period of time is invented by the Jews and Allah refuted them in this verse
There is purification by the fire but thats for believers, it's been mentioned many times in hadiths. Allah refuted the jews specificly because they were given the final message but still disbelieved and think that they can be purified and then taken out and granted paradise.

I can't see how the idea that God will punnish someone infinately does not contradict His Divines names and attributes of mercy and forgiveness. Parents threaten their own misbehaving kids with punnishment, out of love and no real intention to actually punnish them; so I could see why threats of eternal Hell might just be that - a threat- which won't actually be carried out. I think if God just threatened people with a certain amount of time in Hell, they just wouldn't care.

Guys I would like to share with you what Sheikh Al-Qaradawi’s answered about this topic: Praise be to God, and prayers and peace be upon His Messenger, and after: The opinion that the honorable brother is asking about has been attributed to the two imams: Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim, and I read that in some books, as the questioner read it, but with the length of what I read by Ibn Taymiyyah - I did not find it in his many books and letters, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has printed them. Some of the great books such as: “Minhaj al-Sunnah” and such as “Preventing Conflicts of Reason and Revelation” The letters and fatwas were printed in thirty-seven volumes, with their indexes, and I did not find in any of them this opinion of Ibn Taymiyyah. Rather, I found it for his student Ibn al-Qayyim, and I do not know the reason for the error in his attributing it to the Sheikh of Islam, and perhaps they thought that Ibn al-Qayyim did not say an independent opinion on his own, but rather his views are a support and confirmation of the opinions of his Sheikh in most cases. Perhaps he has separated and explained it and evidenced it more than his sheikh, but the reality is that this opinion is the opinion of Ibn al-Qayyim, may God have mercy on him, and here I am conveying a summary of it here from the texts of his books, to clarify his position on this issue.. Ibn al-Qayyim addressed the issue of the perpetuation of fire and its perpetuation in two of his books: 1 - One of the Spirits to the Land of Weddings, from p. 254 to p. 280. 2 Healing the sick in matters of fate, predestination and wisdom. Reasoning from p. 252 to p. 264. And the butter of what he mentioned in his book is summarized as follows: First: He mentioned seven sayings about the eternity of fire or its annihilation, the seventh of which was elaborated: that the fire has a term that ends to it, then its Lord and Creator, the Blessed and Exalted, will annihilate it. This saying was supported in many ways - according to its companions - including: 1 - That God, the Most High, informed in three verses about the Fire, which indicates that it will not be eternal: A - The verse of Surat Al-Naba: (Do not spread eras in it) (verse: 23). The restriction of their stay in it by periods indicates an estimated period that is limited by the number, because what has no end in it is not said: It will remain in eras, and this was understood from the verse of the Companions - and they are the nation’s understanding of the meanings of the Qur’an - as we will mention later. B - The verse of Surat Al-An’am: (He said, “The Fire is your abode, you will abide therein, except as God wills.” Indeed, your Lord is Wise, All-Knowing) (verse: 128). C - The verse of Surat Hud: (They will abide therein as long as the heavens and the earth last, except for what your Lord wills. Indeed, your Lord does what He wants) (verse: 107).. Then he said in Paradise and its people: (verse: 108). Were it not for the definitive evidence that indicates the eternity and permanence of Paradise, the ruling on exceptions in both cases would have been the same. How do? And in the two verses from the context, what differentiates between the two exceptions, for He Almighty said about the people of Hell: (Your Lord does what He wants) so we knew that the Almighty wants to do a deed that He did not tell us about, and He said about the people of Paradise: They are never cut off - and we will mention what the Companions said about the exception. 2 This saying was transmitted from a number of the Companions and the Taabi’een and the great imams: Among the Companions: Umar, may God be pleased with him, said: “If the people of Hell lingered in the Fire as many sands as ‘Yal’, they would have a day when they will go out.” And Ibn Masoud, may God be pleased with him, said: “A time will come upon Hell whose gates will flicker, and there will be no one in it, and that is after they have lingered in it for a long time.” And Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-Aas, may God be pleased with him, narrated the same way. And Abu Huraira said: “As for what I say: there will come a day in Hell in which no one will remain, and he recited: (As for those who are wretched..) the two verses. And Abu Saeed Al-Khudri said in a verse: (Except as your Lord wills): “It came to every verse in the Qur’an, that is, a verse and a feast.” And Ibn Abbas - in a narration from him - said in the verse: (Except for what your Lord wills): “God made an exception. He said: God commanded the Fire to consume them.” Among the followers and imams of the Salaf: Al-Sha’bi said: “Hell is the fastest of the two worlds in building, and the quickest in destruction.” And Abu Majlis said about Hell: “His reward, and if God wills, He will pardon His torment.” And Ishaq bin Rahwayh - who was asked about the verse of Hud - said: "This verse came against every threat in the Qur'an." 3- Reason, transmission, and instinct indicate that the Lord Almighty is Wise, Merciful: Wisdom and mercy make clear that these souls will remain in torment for ever and ever. The texts and considerations indicate that what God has legislated and ordained of torment and punishment in this world, is only to refine souls and purify them from the evil that is in them, and to achieve the interest of rebuke and exhortation, and to cut souls from recurrence - and other things from Judgment - In the Qur’an and Sunnah there is evidence that the kind of pain is only for the benefit of man (that is because they do not suffer from thirst) (At-Tawbah: 120). After all of this, Ibn al-Qayyim inclined to delegate the matter to the will of God, so there is no certainty that the fire will end, just as it is not certain that it will last. He said in the healing of the sick: I am in this matter according to the words of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali; He mentioned the entry of the people of Paradise to Paradise and the people of Hell to the Fire, and he described that as the best description. Then he said: After that, God does in His creation what He wills, and according to the doctrine of Ibn Abbas, where he says: No one should judge God in his creation, and he will not send them down to Paradise or Hell. He mentioned it in the interpretation of the Almighty’s saying: (He said, “The Fire is your abode, to abide therein, except as God wills.”) And according to the doctrine of Abu Saeed Al-Khudri, where he says: The entire Qur’an ends with this verse: “Your Lord does what He wants.” And according to the doctrine of Qatadah, where he says: “Except as your Lord wills,” God knows best. God informed us of what He wills for the people of Paradise, so He said: (A tender is not accepted) and He did not tell us what He wills for the people of Hell. Allah's judgement is supreme not man nor the highiest in wisdom. 4:169 Indeed, those who disbelieve and commit wrong [or injustice] - never will Allah forgive them, nor will He guide them to a path, except that of Hell, to stay there for ever and ever. And that is easy for Allah.
Sir,whether un-believers or believers after death will remain for ever in hell-fire or heavenly-roses is a matter of conjecture.The fact is if buried their bodies will decompose and turn into dirt and possibly a skeleton till the day of judgement. As for their souls that is another matter.

We are familiar with two words in The Qur’an . “ chastisement “ , “ permanent Chastisement “. Where solo chastisement is mentioned there we don’t know what will happen to them after . I don't think Ibn Taymiyya believes that all people of hellfire will eventually enter paradise - Rather, he believes that they would be disintegreated out of existence. Surah 5, Verse states clearly that there is no way out of hell for disbelievers. Surah 6, verses 28 indicated that if the disbelievers were given a second chance, they would repeat their first deeds. If Ibn Teymiya said this, then he was wrong. Sorry to say that but this is beyond doubt and stated in many verses in the Quran while no single verse even implicitly points in the opposite direction.

I am conflicted on the matter but I really like your approach to the issue as a theological exercise. Many take it really strictly and make a "life or death" matter or worse (a hell or heaven one). When it's just a viable opinion that pretty much could be true. And it has little effects on a person who cares about (a believer) then why worry so much about it.
In an examination hall, if few candidates are not willing to handover their answer sheets to the invigilator then how can they expected success even they 100% answers correctly?

I remembered, I read a hadith before, I'll need time to find it, but it hinted to the fact that unbelievers burning in hell for eternity/forever doesn't exclude the fact that hell is eternal. Hellfire could also seize to exist. But in all honesty I don't even think that hadith was explicit
Ibn Taymiyah habitually states all other scholar's/sect's openions when discussing issues and some of the unfair inventionests who disagree with him on other subjects hastely attribute these opinions to him. He also usually apologizes for the opinions of people he disagrees with them and some people think or rather wish that he agrees with that. And his rivals typically have good faith in the atheist Ibn Arabi and apologize for him while they have bad faith in the salfi Ibn Taymyiah and condemn him.
The best part of this video is the comment by brother Paul Williams starting at 10:05, explaining how Islam is not restricted to one scholar's understanding. Ibn Taymiyya (rahimahullah) indeed made ijtihad and he couldn't arrive at the correct understanding. This however doesn't make him a kafir or a fasiq. Scholars discuss this in detail and disagrees with him beautifully, saying he did ijthihad and erred so he will be rewarded once. That's the beauty of Islam. I would recommend Brother Paul to sometimes discuss these issues from point of view of Muslim scholars, where we can both benefit from their knowledge and also their etiquettes of disagreeing in matters like these. For example, this very issue can be studied from a Muslim scholars perspective from Prof. Umar Sulaiman al-Ashqar's the Islamic Creed series (Vol:7).
One thing is true: the only one who never commited mistakes in religion was Prophet Muhammad swalallahu ãlaihi wassallam... Outside him everyone commited mistakes in religious affairs, the tabi'in, the atba tabi'in, the classical scholars, the modern scholars, even the sahabah.... So Ibn Taymiyah is not a exception

The Prophet (PBUH) was not infallible nor was he omniscient, he was only infallible in transmission in scripture. The Prophet (PBUH) made some mistakes, as seen in hadiths, The Prophet (PBUH) had cursed at times but after revelation was revealed to not curse, he’d never done it again.

The people disputing that this was ibn Taymiyyah's position are in some severe denial. Among modern scholars, Yasir Qadhi, Hamza Yusuf, Salman al Oudah, Yusuf al Qaradawi, and Rashid Rida have all reported that this is ibn Taymiyyah's position. This is well known among the ulema, the only people who reject this are some of the Najdi's.

A Very Interesting topic this, the Hell Fire most likely is Eternal however not all of the residents of Hell Fire will abide in it forever. There was a Hadith in Bukhari which goes like this "When people of Heaven will enter Heaven and people of Hellfire will enter Hell, Allah will order the people who had mustard seed of Imaan(faith) to be TAKEN OUT of Hellfire" however people who committed Shirk (Shaytan, Pharaoh..etc) will remain in Hell forever as Qur'an quotes "They will abide theirin Forever" . The reason men will be punished for eternity for not believing in God for 100 years, is cause of our intention . If the God had given him eternal life, he would had no intention of changing and would have remained disbeliever forever . That’s why disbeliver is punished eternally . I used to ask the question why the atheist will be punished the harshest (only hypocrite Muslims he punished worst , but that’s another story ). Why would they be treated almost anyone ? In islam punishment is based on the gravity of sin As Allah is Infinite and Eternal and if anyone rejects Him ,the gravity of sin is Infinite therefore there will be eternal hell for an unbeliever
One of the verses of the Quran is that once Allah or His Messenger has passed a ruling or decision on a certain matter, no one is permitted to have a contrary opinion. So when anyone reads the Quran it is binding on him to accept it as it is. Interpolations or opinions are not to be resorted to. Trying to say that forever does not mean forever is extremely stupid by whoever has done so.
According to this opinion the punishment will stop but it does not imply that the disbelievers will enter paradise. It is very clear in the Quran that paradise is made forbidden for the unbelievers.
Like what many sheiks say: The problem of Ibn Taymiyyah was that he had no teacher of Theology, and that what happens when one deals with theological aspects with nobody to direct him.

I have many teachers who are Arab and masters of Arabic and read all Ibn Taymiyyah. This is his view. Ibn Taymiyyah openly claimed that hell would be extinguished and that no disbeliever will remain in hell but everyone goes to heaven in the end. This is well understood as his view. Though sadly, as some have pointed out, there are radical sects who preach Ibn Taymiyyah but hide and lie about his actually views and teachings..

I have heard this view before. Some people interpret ‘eternal/forever’ as dwelling in the hellfire for ‘ages’. It is difficult to imagine that Allah swt would punish people for infinity. It maybe that disbelievers stay in hellfire but that the fire is extinguished at some point. However perhaps no disbeliever will ever enter paradise. The dwellers of hell may well be content enough with that. Allah swt knows best and his judgement is always merciful and just. Why risk even a moment in hellfire.
Seems like you doubt what ALLAH swt has revealed in the Holy Quran. ALLAH swt is giving people free will and they choose to disobey for all their life. First of all, it is not true that Shaykh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said that Hell is not imperishable and nothing of this has been found in any of his printed and commonly-used books. What actually happened is that his student, Ibn Al-Qayyim reported on his authority that the righteous predecessors had two opinions concerning this issue and he mentioned some relevant citations reported on the authority of the Companions . However, in his own books, Ibn Taymiyyah confirmed the eternal nature of Paradise and Hell. He also reported the scholars’ and Imaams’ consensus on this issue.

There is a wider context than this, including in the Quran. Read the following (starting with hadith qudsi first, then coming back to the Quran):
Hadith qudsi mentioned in the video, which is number one hadith qudsi at that, can't go in the same sentence with the everlasting Hellfire! For more details on this subject, I humbly suggest reading a Google translate of a tafseer (which is in Bosnian in original), do read it carefully (it starts with 11:106-107-108, which is an even better example that 6:128 I've previously used, as it clearly refers to ALL inhabitants of Hellfire, plus the further explanation, plus more hadith):
'Well, those unfortunates (they) are in hell. They will scream and shout there. They will remain there forever as long as the heavens and the earth last, except your Lord will. Indeed, your Lord does what He wills ”(11: 107-108). This verse emphasizes that the punishment of hell is not eternal. If we compare this last verse with the verse that follows it, then this side becomes even clearer: »> And those who are happy, they are in paradise where they will abide forever, as long as the heavens and the earth last, except your Lord wills. (This is) a gift that cannot be broken ”(11: 109). The expressions in both of these verses are the same. Both the inhabitants of heaven and the inhabitants of hell will remain in their abodes while the heavens and the earth last. One exception is then added to both of these verses. At the end of the verse, it is said that any doubt that one will come out of heaven is removed and that it is a gift that is not interrupted, and when one speaks of hell, it is finally said: "Indeed, your Lord does what He wills." This is also proved by the hadiths of the Prophet of God. One hadith in Sahih-Muslim says: “Almighty God will allow angels, prophets and the orthodox to seek intercession for sinners from Him. Finally, the Most Merciful will remain to share forgiveness, and only a handful of people will come out of hellfire who have never done any good in their lives. And "Sahihi - Bukhari" brings a hadith in which it is said that sinners will be thrown into the "River of Life" when they are taken out of hell. This throwing of sinners into the River of Life emphasizes that they will come to a state that is worthy of a higher life. "Kènzu-ámāl" recorded these hadiths: "There will come a time when hell will be inhabited, and later it will resemble a dried wheat stubble." "> One day will come, so no man will remain in hell." The words of Hadhrat-Umar were also recorded by women: "The inhabitants of hell will be as innumerable as the desert sand, but the time will come and everyone will come out of it."
@@alas2dust I have literally given you a hadeeth Qudsi with reference from Muslim 184, and you keep saying Hadeeth Qudsi Number 1. There is no book called Hadeeth Qudsi, it's just a term to mean a hadeeth in the Sahihayn from spoken words of Allah. So please use the correct reference like I have.
Next, the verse in 11:106 talks about those who are Shaqoo, meaning wretched. Define what wretched means for me? Does wretched necessarily mean just unbelievers or everyone? Can people of tawheed also be wretched people? You are ascribing interpretations to Allah without knowledge. Those who are wretched can be both disbelievers and people with a grain of tawheed, thats why its up to Allah if he Wills that they be there eternally or not.
Ibn Kathir mentions that when the verse mentions "as long as the heavens and earth endure". it is an Arabic phrase to mean eternity. Ibn Kathir also states that when it says except for Allah wills is in reference to those who are the disobedient people of tawheed.
Hasan al Basri says that it could also mean that there will be a new heaven and earth in the New Creation, and everything will be eternal so when it says "as long as heaven and earth endure" could mean eternity.
In regards to 11:108, the verse says "a never ending reward at the end" meaning heaven will be eternal, as long as Allah wills. The use of "as long as Allah wills" in the context of heaven is so we dont assume we will get heaven and to keep us on our toes in this life and could also be referring to the Disobedient of the People of Tawheed who will come to heaven. Allahualim. Either way, none of Surah 11 proves that heaven or hell is temporary for all. I'm sorry bro!

Also I once heard that if Allah would have given the unbelievers and wrong-doers eternal life, they would have eternally be unbelievers and wrong doers, therefore it's only just for them to burn in hell forever. However God Knows All.
This argument is non sense. If that's the case then why not put them in hell fire as soon as they reach puberty since they won't be believing in Allah. And also what about putting the muslim dictators in hellfire forever since they would continue to murder if they had eternal life.

Brother Paul, a friendly recommendation. You are a seeker of knowledge and Allah has given you faculty to understand. I dont know if you havent already but have you considered reading the Quran via a tafsir of Great Scholars of the Classical age? There are many, but the one I recommend to start with is Ibn Kathir and there are free online translations of his great work. These scholars have memorised the Quran, many many hadeeth, and understanding of previous scholars who all if not most agree on their status amongst the people of knowledge, all with the understanding of the Arabic language. With these tools and skills that me and you dont have, he explains, verse by verse, the understanding of the Quran drawing on all of that they have learned. He discusses the difference of opinion as well, and suggests what he believes to be the best understanding of a word or a part a verse. It is fascinating and has completely made me look at the Quran in a way more effective and Truthful way. Give it a go, ibn Kathir's tafsir is fairly concise yet detailed and enjoyable for the reader, and recommended for beginners. There are other tafsir like of Imam At-Tabari which is voluminous and the best, so is for advanced students of knowledge. However Ibn Kathir cites many of the other older tafsir works as well.

But there will always be a great difference between a cold academic non believer thesis and the product of Muslim scholars dedicated their lives just to understand what Allah meant with his sacred message starting from the baes that it is the ultimate truth of Allah and the wisdom of his prophet PBUH.

I mean Ibn Qayyim and Ibn Taymiyyah might have this view but the vast majority of scholars in Islam believe that hellfire is forever and obviously certain individuals and groups of people will reside in hell forever. It’s still interesting to think about if hellfire will be forever or not but then *in my personal opinion* these types of views won’t benefit us anyway

Agreed. It seems as if according to my thoughts that humans who attribute hell forever use it as a way of otherising other humans to eternal hell because they believe their life is wrong. But I believe Allah's mercy encompasses all beings, no matter how long hell is. I like to think of hell as almost like a hospital, those who are in it are very sick (from their misdeeds of this life) and suffering in order reform them in hell and eventually will be admitted to jannah. Although these are my thoughts, Allah knows best the reality.

Actually Ibn Taymiyyah never argues for that; yes he does mention that opinion and further states the “strong” arguments supporting such a view, but he himself never claims that Hell vanishes or gets annihilated. In fact, he suggested the contrary (i.e., Hell *is* everlasting) in explicit terms, and he agreed upon the consensus of scholars in that regard. I can provide Arabic sources if anyone wants.

Quran also States somewhere that "Hell is worst place to be, even if it is for few moments".
And one sahih-hadith that I heard today states The heat of the hellfire is 70 times stronger than fire on this earth.
Only this should be sufficient warning for both believers & disbeliever to take Quran seriously, submits & obey Allah and to seek refuge from Hell Fire.
The unbelievers accordingly to Qur'an will abide in hellfire forever, as Allah does not forgive shirk, Allah will be the judge of humanity.
Ah, but the Muslims do not take the concept of shirk far enough. Shirk means there is only God, so no Quran ,Mohammed, Kaaba etc are needed. God has always been present and is not dependent on any prophet for revelation. This is the message of Jiddhu Krishnamurti, who taught people to be a light to themselves. If this is not the case, then there are any number of arbitrary cases where people are 'sent' to hell - in the minds of Muslims - because they have not heard of Islam, were born before Mohammed etc

And God tells us in Quran, that people will be judged fairly, based on what they were exposed to. @@hbk3119 The idea that God punishes is rather flawed ... someone who dies as a cruel person will naturally attract others of the same mentality and indeed create the very conditions for punishment. We are punished by our sins, not for them. If one sees Law as an aspect of God, then by 'breaking' these laws, one simply creates adverse conditions. You can see this in physical laws. In metaphysics... If we were instantly punished for what we did, we would have no free will and no capacity to grow in understanding. I went to a school where caning was still allowed. When the headmaster appeared, there was an instant hush in the class ... but as soon as he left, the innate natures of the pupils quickly came to the fore. So metaphysical laws have to be more subtle, to allow for growth, both good and bad. Life is a school and we are here to learn lessons. The mind creates the after life states that follow as a consequence, not as a punishment. That said, it is obvious that keeping faithful to a genuine path, keeping the company of like minded people and so on is a boon

I really liked ibn taymiya argument that chastisement is for cleansing of the soul therefore endless punishment makes no sense. Universal salvation could be a possibility 🙏
If that was true, then what is the purpose of this life here, and especially of being a muslim. In the end, it doesn't matter if you are muslim or not if universal salvation was at stake. Some sects of christians also hold this belief, Seventh day adventists for one. As seemingly comforting as it may seem, this belief will give confidence to non-muslims, for example, that they can remain as they are. Dangerous teaching... Rethink.
Many muslims are complacent/ lazy and procrastinate in the certainty that they as Muslims will not abide in Hell forever. I feel the descriptions of it are enough for us to be astute in our quest for heaven without account. InshaAllah.
That is not his view, what makes the person think ibn taymiyyah holds it, is the fact that whenever he brings the evidences of his opponents he represents and explains them with great integrity, to the point that you might assume he is advocating for them, and in this case there is no exception, he brought the two views without doing "tarjeeh" or choosing between them, however in another book called "naqd maratib al-ijmaa" which is a critique of ibn hazm's book, when he reached the issue of eternity of hell, ibn hazam reported consensus on it and ibn taymiyyah agreed on that, and this clarifies his position, another factor that helps us understand more is the fact that his brilliant student ibn al-qayyim, has an opinion on the matter too, and he differentates between the hell that would be for disbelievers, and the hell that would be for believers who committed major sins, as we all know, all believers would eventually get out of hell, and ibn Qayyim says they were not with the disbelievers in their hell fire, therefore when the punishment is lifted upon them and they get out from hell to heaven, that hell in which the believers were in would vanish and has an end, because there is nobody in it anymore, but as for the hell that the disbelievers are in, it would not vanish for eternity because the disbelievers' punishment is to suffer in it for ever, and upon this there is consensus.

Those who followed will say, "If only we had another turn [at worldly life] so we could disassociate ourselves from them as they have disassociated themselves from us." Thus will Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire.

If Allah told us with an Oath(verse 1), so why do we say that Unbelivers we get out of hell? this isnt loss!

All I know is that He is not unjust. As for matters of afterlife, all we need to know is that hellfire is a terrible abode and that we should avoid it by all means. While debating technicalities people tend to miss the bigger picture.

That is because they used to say, "The fire will most certainly not touch us for more than a limited number of days":
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya clearly mentioned in his book "الرد على من قال بفناء الجنة والنار" (The Refutation of He Who Claims the Extinguishing of al-Janna and a-Nar) that the statement for the extinguishing of them was not said the the Selef, the Sahaba or the Taba'een, but is rather the statement of the Jahamiyya (see page 42 of the Dar Balansiyya printing which is available online). However, he seems to imply at the end of the book that the punishment in the "Nar" will end as that's in accordance with Allah's rahma (literally Mercy) and hikma (literally wisdom) (see page 83 of the same edition) and Allah knows best.
I'm sure that whatever happens to those souls in the hereafter, Allah SWT chose those words for the Quran, because if He stated otherwise, like entering paradise after cleansing the soul of its wrongdoings, unbelievers would have much less motivation to become believers. Allah uses fear and agony to warn us, putting it more softly would never have the same effect on human beings

Indeed, Ibn Tymiyah was wrong regarding Hellfire annellation. Without a shadow of a doubt, the consensus of the first three generations is upon the eternal dwelling of the non-believers in Hellfire.
It is enough to read in the Quran an explicate Aayah affirming the correct Islamic creed regarding the everlasting chastisement of the Kuffar where Allah clearly says: {And so Allah will make them (the disbelievers) remorseful of their misdeeds. And they will never ˹be able to˺ leave the Fire} Al-Baqarah, 167.

Hellfire is not eternal, the word "khalidina" and "abad" it also means for a long time.
read also V.128 An-naam in arabic: ila macha allahu which means "except what God wants" (speaking of the length of stay in hell)

There is purification by the fire but thats for believers, it's been mentioned many times in hadiths. Allah refuted the jews specificly because they were given the final message but still disbelieved and think that they can be purified and then taken out and granted paradise.

Despite all the hate ibn taymeyah gets, he’s the most moderate man, scholar in Islamic history. For example, Most people assume that if you divorce your wife out of anger, then it’s an official divorce however, ibn taymeyah says otherwise.

I can't see how the idea that God will punnish someone infinately does not contradict His Divines names and attributes of mercy and forgiveness. Parents threaten their own misbehaving kids with punnishment, out of love and no real intention to actually punnish them; so I could see why threats of eternal Hell might just be that - a threat- which won't actually be carried out. I think if God just threatened people with a certain amount of time in Hell, they just wouldn't care.

The opinion that the honorable brother is asking about has been attributed to the two imams: Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim, and I read that in some books, as the questioner read it, but with the length of what I read by Ibn Taymiyyah - I did not find it in his many books and letters, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has printed them. Some of the great books such as: “Minhaj al-Sunnah” and such as “Preventing Conflicts of Reason and Revelation”
The letters and fatwas were printed in thirty-seven volumes, with their indexes, and I did not find in any of them this opinion of Ibn Taymiyyah. Rather, I found it for his student Ibn al-Qayyim, and I do not know the reason for the error in his attributing it to the Sheikh of Islam, and perhaps they thought that Ibn al-Qayyim did not say an independent opinion on his own, but rather his views are a support and confirmation of the opinions of his Sheikh in most cases. Perhaps he has separated and explained it and evidenced it more than his sheikh, but the reality is that this opinion is the opinion of Ibn al-Qayyim, may God have mercy on him, and here I am conveying a summary of it here from the texts of his books, to clarify his position on this issue..
Ibn al-Qayyim addressed the issue of the perpetuation of fire and its perpetuation in two of his books:
1 - One of the Spirits to the Land of Weddings, from p. 254 to p. 280.
2 Healing the sick in matters of fate, predestination and wisdom. Reasoning from p. 252 to p. 264.
And the butter of what he mentioned in his book is summarized as follows:
First: He mentioned seven sayings about the eternity of fire or its annihilation, the seventh of which was elaborated: that the fire has a term that ends to it, then its Lord and Creator, the Blessed and Exalted, will annihilate it. This saying was supported in many ways - according to its companions - including:
1 - That God, the Most High, informed in three verses about the Fire, which indicates that it will not be eternal:
A - The verse of Surat Al-Naba: (Do not spread eras in it) (verse: 23). The restriction of their stay in it by periods indicates an estimated period that is limited by the number, because what has no end in it is not said: It will remain in eras, and this was understood from the verse of the Companions - and they are the nation’s understanding of the meanings of the Qur’an - as we will mention later.
B - The verse of Surat Al-An’am: (He said, “The Fire is your abode, you will abide therein, except as God wills.” Indeed, your Lord is Wise, All-Knowing) (verse: 128).
C - The verse of Surat Hud: (They will abide therein as long as the heavens and the earth last, except for what your Lord wills. Indeed, your Lord does what He wants) (verse: 107).. Then he said in Paradise and its people: (verse: 108). Were it not for the definitive evidence that indicates the eternity and permanence of Paradise, the ruling on exceptions in both cases would have been the same. How do? And in the two verses from the context, what differentiates between the two exceptions, for He Almighty said about the people of Hell: (Your Lord does what He wants) so we knew that the Almighty wants to do a deed that He did not tell us about, and He said about the people of Paradise: They are never cut off - and we will mention what the Companions said about the exception.
2 This saying was transmitted from a number of the Companions and the Taabi’een and the great imams:
Among the Companions:
Umar, may God be pleased with him, said: “If the people of Hell lingered in the Fire as many sands as ‘Yal’, they would have a day when they will go out.”
And Ibn Masoud, may God be pleased with him, said: “A time will come upon Hell whose gates will flicker, and there will be no one in it, and that is after they have lingered in it for a long time.”
And Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-Aas, may God be pleased with him, narrated the same way.
And Abu Huraira said: “As for what I say: there will come a day in Hell in which no one will remain, and he recited: (As for those who are wretched..) the two verses.
And Abu Saeed Al-Khudri said in a verse: (Except as your Lord wills): “It came to every verse in the Qur’an, that is, a verse and a feast.”
And Ibn Abbas - in a narration from him - said in the verse: (Except for what your Lord wills): “God made an exception. He said: God commanded the Fire to consume them.”
Among the followers and imams of the Salaf:
Al-Sha’bi said: “Hell is the fastest of the two worlds in building, and the quickest in destruction.”
And Abu Majlis said about Hell: “His reward, and if God wills, He will pardon His torment.”
And Ishaq bin Rahwayh - who was asked about the verse of Hud - said: "This verse came against every threat in the Qur'an."
3- Reason, transmission, and instinct indicate that the Lord Almighty is Wise, Merciful:
Wisdom and mercy make clear that these souls will remain in torment for ever and ever. The texts and considerations indicate that what God has legislated and ordained of torment and punishment in this world, is only to refine souls and purify them from the evil that is in them, and to achieve the interest of rebuke and exhortation, and to cut souls from recurrence - and other things from Judgment - In the Qur’an and Sunnah there is evidence that the kind of pain is only for the benefit of man (that is because they do not suffer from thirst) (At-Tawbah: 120).
After all of this, Ibn al-Qayyim inclined to delegate the matter to the will of God, so there is no certainty that the fire will end, just as it is not certain that it will last. He said in the healing of the sick: I am in this matter according to the words of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali; He mentioned the entry of the people of Paradise to Paradise and the people of Hell to the Fire, and he described that as the best description. Then he said: After that, God does in His creation what He wills, and according to the doctrine of Ibn Abbas, where he says: No one should judge God in his creation, and he will not send them down to Paradise or Hell. He mentioned it in the interpretation of the Almighty’s saying: (He said, “The Fire is your abode, to abide therein, except as God wills.”)
And according to the doctrine of Abu Saeed Al-Khudri, where he says: The entire Qur’an ends with this verse: “Your Lord does what He wants.” And according to the doctrine of Qatadah, where he says: “Except as your Lord wills,” God knows best. God informed us of what He wills for the people of Paradise, so He said: (A tender is not accepted) and He did not tell us what He wills for the people of Hell.
And the saying that the fire and its torment are permanent with the permanence of God is a news about God of what He does, and if it does not match His knowledge of Himself with that, then it is a saying against him without knowledge, and the texts do not understand that, and God knows best

Sir,whether un-believers or believers after death will remain for ever in hell-fire or heavenly-roses is a matter of conjecture.The fact is if buried their bodies will decompose and turn into dirt and possibly a skeleton till the day of judgement.

I don't think Ibn Taymiyya believes that all people of hellfire will eventually enter paradise - Rather, he believes that they would be disintegreated out of existence. Surah 5, Verse states clearly that there is no way out of hell for disbelievers. Surah 6, verses 28 indicated that if the disbelievers were given a second chance, they would repeat their first deeds. If Ibn Teymiya said this, then he was wrong. Sorry to say that but this is beyond doubt and stated in many verses in the Quran while no single verse even implicitly points in the opposite direction.

I am conflicted on the matter but I really like your approach to the issue as a theological exercise. Many take it really strictly and make a "life or death" matter or worse (a hell or heaven one). When it's just a viable opinion that pretty much could be true. And it has little effects on a person who cares about (a believer) then why worry so much about it.
In an examination hall, if few candidates are not willing to handover their answer sheets to the invigilator then how can they expected success even they 100% answers correctly?

I remembered, I read a hadith before, I'll need time to find it, but it hinted to the fact that unbelievers burning in hell for eternity/forever doesn't exclude the fact that hell is eternal. Hellfire could also seize to exist. But in all honesty I don't even think that hadith was explicit

Ibn Taymiyah habitually states all other scholar's/sect's openions when discussing issues and some of the unfair inventionests who disagree with him on other subjects hastely attribute these opinions to him.
He also usually apologizes for the opinions of people he disagrees with them and some people think or rather wish that he agrees with that.
And his rivals typically have good faith in the atheist Ibn Arabi and apologize for him while they have bad faith in the salfi Ibn Taymyiah and condemn him.
The best part of this video is the comment by brother Paul Williams starting at 10:05, explaining how Islam is not restricted to one scholar's understanding.
Ibn Taymiyya (rahimahullah) indeed made ijtihad and he couldn't arrive at the correct understanding. This however doesn't make him a kafir or a fasiq. Scholars discuss this in detail and disagrees with him beautifully, saying he did ijthihad and erred so he will be rewarded once. That's the beauty of Islam.
I would recommend Brother Paul to sometimes discuss these issues from point of view of Muslim scholars, where we can both benefit from their knowledge and also their etiquettes of disagreeing in matters like these. For example, this very issue can be studied from a Muslim scholars perspective from Prof. Umar Sulaiman al-Ashqar's the Islamic Creed series (Vol:7).

The Prophet (PBUH) was not infallible nor was he omniscient, he was only infallible in transmission in scripture. The Prophet (PBUH) made some mistakes, as seen in hadiths, The Prophet (PBUH) had cursed at times but after revelation was revealed to not curse, he’d never done it again.

The people disputing that this was ibn Taymiyyah's position are in some severe denial. Among modern scholars, Yasir Qadhi, Hamza Yusuf, Salman al Oudah, Yusuf al Qaradawi, and Rashid Rida have all reported that this is ibn Taymiyyah's position. This is well known among the ulema, the only people who reject this are some of the Najdi's.

A Very Interesting topic this, the Hell Fire most likely is Eternal however not all of the residents of Hell Fire will abide in it forever. There was a Hadith in Bukhari which goes like this "When people of Heaven will enter Heaven and people of Hellfire will enter Hell, Allah will order the people who had mustard seed of Imaan(faith) to be TAKEN OUT of Hellfire" however people who committed Shirk (Shaytan, Pharaoh..etc) will remain in Hell forever as Qur'an quotes "They will abide theirin Forever" . The reason men will be punished for eternity for not believing in God for 100 years, is cause of our intention . If the God had given him eternal life, he would had no intention of changing and would have remained disbeliever forever . That’s why disbeliver is punished eternally . I used to ask the question why the atheist will be punished the harshest (only hypocrite Muslims he punished worst , but that’s another story ). Why would they be treated almost anyone ? I got the answer ; as I was taking to atheist , he told me that if there is hell, he volunteers to be the first one there. The way he said it , I was like dang I got my answer . It’s cause of pride . In islam punishment is based on the gravity of sin
As Allah is Infinite and Eternal and if anyone rejects Him ,the gravity of sin is Infinite therefore there will be eternal hell for an unbeliever
One of the verses of the Quran is that once Allah or His Messenger has passed a ruling or decision on a certain matter, no one is permitted to have a contrary opinion.
So when anyone reads the Quran it is binding on him to accept it as it is. Interpolations or opinions are not to be resorted to. Trying to say that forever does not mean forever is extremely stupid by whoever has done so.
According to this opinion the punishment will stop but it does not imply that the disbelievers will enter paradise. It is very clear in the Quran that paradise is made forbidden for the unbelievers.
Like what many sheiks say: The problem of Ibn Taymiyyah was that he had no teacher of Theology, and that what happens when one deals with theological aspects with nobody to direct him.

I have many teachers who are Arab and masters of Arabic and read all Ibn Taymiyyah. This is his view. Ibn Taymiyyah openly claimed that hell would be extinguished and that no disbeliever will remain in hell but everyone goes to heaven in the end. This is well understood as his view.
Though sadly, as some have pointed out, there are radical sects who preach Ibn Taymiyyah but hide and lie about his actually views and teachings..

As for the he claiming openly that the hellfire isn't eternal that comes from a debate he had where what he was saying was taken out of context.

I have heard this view before. Some people interpret ‘eternal/forever’ as dwelling in the hellfire for ‘ages’. It is difficult to imagine that Allah swt would punish people for infinity. It maybe that disbelievers stay in hellfire but that the fire is extinguished at some point. However perhaps no disbeliever will ever enter paradise. The dwellers of hell may well be content enough with that. Allah swt knows best and his judgement is always merciful and just. Why risk even a moment in hellfire.

First, have you watched the video and what Ibn Taymiyyah said? If you did and it is true that Ibn Taymiyyah did say that then on what grounds would Ibn Taymiyyah have said what he did? I have read translations saying the unbelievers will be in hell ‘therein ages’ or to that effect, the same is translated as eternal by other commentators. It is plausible that being burned alive for eternity may not be the case. That hell wont be a burning pit forever but the place known as hell remains. I finished off my comment by saying Allah swt knows best. My comment is in reference to this video and the opinion of the great scholar Ibn Taymiyyah. A carte blanche ‘Hell is forever because it says so in the Quran’ is not debating the point in the video.

First of all, it is not true that Shaykh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said that Hell is not imperishable and nothing of this has been found in any of his printed and commonly-used books. What actually happened is that his student, Ibn Al-Qayyim reported on his authority that the righteous predecessors had two opinions concerning this issue and he mentioned some relevant citations reported on the authority of the Companions . However, in his own books, Ibn Taymiyyah confirmed the eternal nature of Paradise and Hell. He also reported the scholars’ and Imaams’ consensus on this issue.
