Give me a Bottled in Bond Bourbon, 12 year old Auchentoshan, or a12 year old Redbreast anytime before Pappy Van Winkle or any other collectible Macallen or whatever. At some point the law of diminishing return should kick in pretty early for these collectible or "investment" whiskies. Better yet, I continue to support my local craft distiller Rock Town.
I hate that this is happening to bourbon, for years it was considered a working man's drink and the price reflected this without sacrificing quality. It was a sad day when the wine guru Robert Parker decided he was a bourbon expert.

Robert Rogers best value I've found (a good bottle in bond bourbon)none of that marketed crap involved that mainstream bourbon has.
It is too bad it is soon to have its own cache and will then get its own marketing department to sell us ever poorer whisky for more money as has happened with Scotch.

You make a great point about fake Pappy's. In fact, fake bottles were purchased by the LCBO here in Ontario Canada back in 2013 (I believe). They didn't see the shelves because they were spotted in time, but if government controlled dealers can be swindled, anyone can.

are fakes limited to the high end collectables or can they be found among less expensive, but still limited in quantity bottlings such as a distillery limited edition or hand filled bottles? they command less but if replicated in large quantity they can earn just as much.

    • @thewhiskybothy
      @thewhiskybothy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

. . . not yet ! but rising prices will attract a wider range of fakes as it has done in the wine industry.

I just don't really get his "governments fear alcohol". Or, well, I get the meaning, but it's not quite reality, is it? For every country with expensive alcohol there are like 3+ countrys where a bottle of vodka is less than 5 bucks

This is why bottles where distillers & producers establish provenance (on the label, preferably) are growing such a market. Foursquare, Stranahan's, Balcones, Garrison Brothers, Springbank, & Kilkerran come to mind immediately. Especially with the boom that the market is seeing right now, due diligence is just good practice.

Ralfy, what do you think about giving a bottle a shake before a pour? I have noticed the same flavor from the start of a bottle to the end,, My first bottle of lagavulin i notice strong smoke at the beginning and less at the end of the bottle that was not given a shake...

tried my first single malt!!! highland park 18yr..
on the nose I got Butter Scotch, black liquorice, Bourbon notes, fresh leather, orange peel or fresh sliced oranges, burnt marshmallow, and vanilla..
taste: got pepper, camp fire taste of smoke, orange peel, black liquorice, maybe a touch of vanilla, slight Bourbon taste.
the faint Bourbon taste makes me wonder did they used Bourbon cask??

Normally I'm a big fan of Ralfy's videos, but I have to admit my eyes start to glaze over when he starts talking about the banking system. It's clearly a favorite subject of Ralfy's to talk about.
Obviously, the main motivation for faking whiskies is to make money off unsuspecting buyers. I just wish there was a little more discussion about the types of fakes and how to identify them. More examples would have been great... especially examples that us less-wealthy drinkers and collectors might run across when looking for something at auction to someday drink.
Personally, I am now avoiding Arbegs from 10-20 years ago at auctions, because the capsules they used were pretty generic in style and were often loose fitting. And since their whiskies bottled in that period are so heavily collected and empty bottles are plentiful, they are very vulnerable to faking. Just re-fill and seal. If they filled them with the modern Ardbeg, people would be even more fooled, because the bottle would have the Ardbeg taste and peatiness, it just wouldn't be the highly collected whisky that people thought they were buying.

Thanks for the info Ralfy. I continue to see an increasing number of empty bottles peddled on eBay, and have wondered whether they end up being refilled as fakes... Is there a market for empty whisky bottles just for the sake of the bottles? BTW, I have stopped throwing away my good bottles, but have no idea what I'll do with them! 😳😝

In early April 2024, there are several China-based websites selling 'scotch whisky' at extremely low prices. We know this because the websites use the China Post to ship the bottles from Hong Kong. These websites offer major credit cards and PayPal as options for payment.

Easy way to tell the old from the new. Speak to someone in the printing industry - litho or flexo printing. One close look at the label by anyone in that industry and the fake would LEAP out at them. Modern printing looks nothing like that of even 30 years ago.

Fake Pappys have been around for quite a while already. Empty Pappy bottles have been selling on eBay for high prices. The buyers are obviously not spending that kind of money for the bottle to hold a lamp shade.
If I was the seller of that fraudulent bottle of Laphroaig, I would be very frightened. The people who can spend that much money on a bottle also have the money to pay for fancy lawyers and bulldog police to come after me.
