Chechnya, a Real Challenge for Putin?

    The war in Ukraine has left us with a lot of news stories, but perhaps one of the most curious and one that few people have stopped to really consider, is that Chechnya has sent troops to Ukraine. In theory, Chechnya is just another part of Russia, so this should not be news, but it turns out that things are not so straightforward.
    This region has a long history of conflicts and has not exactly had a good relationship with Russia throughout its history. There have been everything from Chechen genocides, to collaborations with the Nazis to get rid of Russia. Now Kadyrov wants to pay Putin back for all the money Putin has given him to stay in power by supporting him in Ukraine. But the feared Chechen army is not what it seems either.
    Does Chechnya have an army parallel to Russia? How was the Chechen conflict resolved? How effective are the Kadyrovites? Is Chechnya really loyal to Putin?

    Interesting video. Quick point of clarification. Chechnya’s independence was denied in the early 1990s because it was an autonomous republic of Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. It was not a full top-level Soviet Republic, like Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan, etc. it therefore didn’t have a recognised right to independence. That said, Chechnya is definitely one to watch.

    This video went so far as tsar time, but failed to mention Chechen deportation of 1944, when all Chechens were moved from home to inhospitable areas of Kazakhstan. 1/4 of them perished as a result.
    This was one the main drivers of resentment towards Russia.

    • @DD-kk9jj
      @DD-kk9jj ปีที่แล้ว

      that's what basically Russia has been doing throughout all its history. They deported most of the Crimean Tatars in 1944 to the far-East regions in Russia. They moved large portions of Ukrainians from the Eastern regions of Ukraine to other regions in Russia during the Soviet time and doing it now since 2014. Tactics is simple - deportation of the locals, moving Russians on their places to cultivate some kind of Russian world there to justify future invasions

    • @anterogradus
      @anterogradus ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DD-kk9jj Yeah, the list is going on and on. Deportation of Volga Germans, Koreans from far East. And those are only total deportations.
      Deportations of Poles from Belarus and Ukraine, massive deportations from Baltic countries to Siberia.

    • @DavidHalko

      Syria will experience genocide, if the Sunni Arabs take control of the Shite government. We saw inklings of this with the Sunni Islamic State genocide of the Yazidi. Syrian minorities are literally fighting for their lives, just like Ukraine is after having experienced genocide under Russians during the Holodomor.
      Iran has a strategic internet in Syria, projecting power across the top of the Arabian Peninsula, to make a line of Shite power to the sea, dividing Sunni Turkish NATO & Sunni Arabian Peninsula aligned with the US. Historically, the Persian Empire controlled this area for awhile. (This interest is why HW Bush did not invade Iraq during the first gulf war.)
      Russia has an interest in Syria, since it is a warm water port, not blocked by Turkey. Russia will pull out all the steps to keep Syria from falling.
      The funding of the Syrian Civil War by former Obama/Biden Administration did not take these into account.
      These are some of the reasons the Syrian civil war dragged on for so long, with the minority government holding on.

      It's already starting to happen. Russia's best elite forces suffered severe casualties early in the war; now the regular army only has quantity, not quality. The Wagner group is now Russia's best fighting force on the battlefield, and they are at odds with the ministry of defence. The prestige of the regular army is deteriorating and the Wagner group is increasing as time passes. I won't be surprised if the Wagner group mounts a coup.

    Independence of Chechnya is not an easy topic. As the speaker mentions, Chechnya has little to nothing to run her economy somewhat independently. Actually, that's one of the main reasons why Chechens could not proceed further on the independence path after fending off the first Russian attack. All these warlords who were once fighting Russians turned to one another for whatever income there could be generated. Also, all sorts of criminal activities were common including widespread kidnapping of people for a ransom. Cutting of the Chechnya's economy from the donors would cause massive chaos not only in the area but in surrounding regions and I'll let the reader answer what happens when you have guns and willingness to commit atrocities but no money.

      @@tpeterson9140 yeah, very artillery based with slow movements of troops. A way to mitigate casualties after the result from the first battle of Grozny. Still a very brutal war. But the guy summed it up as Kadyrov getting paid and taking care of the problem himself which was no where near the case until the 2000's.

      The Baltics and Poland are all NATO members. Putyin will scream and shout and stomp but won't do anything to them because it would mean war with NATO. A war which his troops has proved- would end very quickly with russian defeat.

    Chechnya and Degestan are small regions of the Russian federation, inconsequential tbh if it wasn’t for the location of their regions in Russia. This is no Kazakhstan or Ukraine in terms of square area footage if it came to secession.

      Don’t forget, Russia would loose access to the Caspian Sea in the process. Loosing the Caspian Sea to a Muslim caliphate would spell disaster to what’s left of the Russian empire.
