The A10 is the infantryman's guardian angel. It can take off from dirt roads , give hell to the enemy with its GAU 8/A Cannon and other weapons, take heavy punishment and fly back to base with only one wing or engine. The placement of the engines is also deliberate. This aircraft can pulverize tanks. And the fuel tanks are carefully protected. And this beast has been upgraded. Why are you discussing all this when A-10s are not even manufactured, and almost all are at the end of their lives? The US Air Force is already running A-10s by extending their lives. It was a great plane, but it is also a plane that is way past its expiry date.
@@KamaleshRoy-sk2hj that is an idiotic comment considering present day geopolitics when all of India's strategic made in India aircraft will have American engines
We dont need A10 as we have our Jaguars for such missions. A10 can hammer only weak countries. But we definately need atleast 3 more squadrons of Rafael and 3 squadrons of a 5th Gen fighter along with timely delivery of Tejas Mk1A.
For the first time today I do not agree with your concept. India truly needs CAS aircraft. Mountains me bombing easy nahi hai, too high and you get picked up by ground radar, too low and you face terrain danger. Most of the targets are and will be in valleys and regular bombers including Jaguar are too fast to pass them before accurately targeting them. Helicopters can hover but sacrifice is with payload and survivability. Remember Black Hawk Down? The latest Ukraine- Russia conflict have also shown this. We need a A10 like low speed, heavy payload, highly survivable air craft. May be a derivative of Trainer Hawk or upcoming Marut or A totally new design from scratch.
We don't need it as a necessity. We need more helicopters like HAL LCH. For close air support, India could consider getting 100% ToT on Sukhoi-25, and make them entirely in India, but that is not a major necessity. Anti-drone technology is more important now.
drones typically are shoot and scoot, close air support needs persistence air cover with high degree of survival. It’s more part of tactical paradigm and is effective for sure in those scenarios. A10s are very versatile
Ask any US infantryman and they will violently disagree with you. Drones have a different mission and A10s primary mission is to provide close air support to ground troops.

A-10 flies really slow and never cease to amaze anyone with its capabilities but slowly its role bit by bit is taken away by other platforms like F-16 which is capable of SEAD missions and basic ground attack, Helicopter's, drones and UAS but A-10 and SU-25 is unique in itself and India as it aspires to be a global power must have all types of aircrafts in its fleet to manage any threat and wars are not limited to mountains and Jaguars and other fighters are good but they can't fly slow like A-10 or SU-25 and is not specific CAS aircrafts and we must ponder over options including get licenced manufacturing of a such a system with 100% TOT and our own avionics or develop a flying tank for CAS but we are already busy with Tejas Mk1 and 2, Amca and all other projects so... Especially in the Rann of Kutch area and the rest of western land border. But hum toh Jaguars ko bhi retire kar denge kuchh sal meh. Shouldn't we look for an alternative? Hunters and Maruts were critical to the army's victory at Longewala. Not sure if the Mirage 2000 and Su-30MKIs or the Rafale are the best bet for that. Yes we will have helicopters like Prachand and AH-64 but again as you pointed out they are in a separate class. So maybe a deal worth looking at for the future. Both warthog and frog foot are exceptional choices for this role however, they are a bit one dimensional and may be a reason for them being ignored as the current doctrine require multirole aircrafts over a specialized ground attack plane like this.
Actually this is a good aircraft..they call it flying fortress. Signature two engines on the tail lend some protection. It is found that despite a crippled wing, it managed to get out of the enemy country & land safely in the neutral terrain. However, soeed is one shortcoming. Further, use of Helis will get more & more limited as they're very vulnerable to anti-aircraft missiles.
There were two concepts shown by HAL some time back. One was called the Hawk i, and the other was a weaponosed version of the HTT 40- something like the American Super Tucano.
