I just wanted to take a minute and say thank you so much for doing this series. I am new to wood turning, my wife just got me a lathe for our anniversary about a month ago. It is small and I only have 3 tools for now. I have done a few projects so far but I haven't tackled anything that would require a chuck (jacobs or jawed). I have been watching your videos and I really enjoy them. I just wanted to let you know I really appreciate you providing me with a digital apprenticeship! You are amazing :)

Great stuff Mike . I've had to go back to using this technique for a few months . My old chuck finally gave up . I don't have the the money for a new one right now . So I'll have to keep doing it like this . Cheers take care .

A very good well explained video on an alternative to using a chuck.
I don't like boxes, my lids are always too tight or too loose and any way the next day they will be the opposite!!!

Great video, Mike. A good direction for new turners. We've got a number of guys who getting fed up with chopping away twixt centres, but are wary of the next step of getting a chuck. There's always the dilemma of affordability, which chuck and how to use it. I think we can all tell stories of pieces flying out of the chuck like presents from Kim Jong Un. Maybe using your method is a useful first step from between centres turning before moving up to a chuck? It might also help novices understand the different ways that lathe tools should be used when the work is held differently. Good one, Mike.

Hi Mike, A really good presentation, we do get very reliant on our chucks and it is good from time to time to turn with tried and true methods prior to chucks. I note that some people do not like hot melt and I think you repeatedly tell folk to use the glue of their choice, however hot melt is a secure way of attachment and relatively easy to remove unlike CA and certainly titebond.
Love the series keep them coming.

Well done. Great lesson. Might have mentioned, for those who might not think of it, to be careful when blending the lid and box together. You wouldn't want to "shape" right through your Mortise/ten on and have no way to seat the lid onto the box.

This is a good series. I was thinking I had to layout $200 on a chuck to do this kind of work.

I take it you cannot re gouge out after parting due to the hardened glue, so as to use again?. cant wait to try out no chuck method.
You could turn away the glue and use again Dave.
can you recommend any hot glue guns and sticks?
I personally use the Bosch PKP18 E and the glue stick from Axminster here in the UK, and have had no problems in the six years that I've had it.

Nice work Mike, two questions, how do you finish the bottom of the box, and where do you get your long glue sticks from, Thank you Mart
Thanks Mart, I forgot to mention that, you just make a jam chuck with what's left of the blank, after you've parted off. Jam the body to it, and finish off the bottom with light cuts, and your finish of choice.

Do you ever find hard wood without having to hunt down a tree trimming service? I'm new-er to turning and dont know where to get what wood, Buying it seems to defeat the whole purpose of turning.
Hard wood window manufacturers normally have off cuts that they are glad to get rid of. Felled trees are the best source of course, keep an ear out for a chain saw too, normally leads to some free wood.

Aaaagh! You did the same as so many other "beginner's" turning video. How did you mount the block to turn it to round? Also, background music does nothing to enhance the video as it just tends to drown out the dialogue. If I want to listen to music, I will listen to BBC radio. If I want to learn, I will watch youtube,
As I watch more of this video, I get more and more frustrated. You fast forward through the interesting video showing techniques and waffle about "So, the next thing to do, let's assume the body has been hollowed out". I wonder if you are trying to produce an educational video or just trying to show off your turning skills. Not the worst tutorial but very, very far from the best.
