If you do it correctly, the top is separated off in one clean piece, so *a successful* attempt is quite safe. I'm no expert (I've never done it) but when I saw it done on QI the expert cleft the top such that the separation was at the neck, thus *below* the ridges near the bottle's lip. Rosanna removed a small segment at the lip of the bottle and it looks like some of the energy went to popping the cork itself, whereas they shouldn't be touching the cork when done correctly. Success seems to require a clean and confident follow-through, otherwise if you hesitate as Rosanna's sister had it won't work.

Ro- just a heads up don’t use regular glasses as safety glasses. If something hits the lenses they will break and go right into your eyeball. People have literally lost their eyes that way! Safety glasses have to be thicker by regulation to stop and debris from breaking the lenses.

Glass doesn’t end up in the bottle because you’re hitting it at a angle and the bottle neck is chilled
