Outstanding! Chock full of amazing footage, fascinating & informative Commentary and beautiful & charming places. Watching your videos is just like watching a top notch BBC/PBS or A&E Documentary! Truly Professional, very beautiful & so fascinating! You should be working for one of those Companies! You would truly do them proud! It is no wonder you won the TH-cam Award for excellence in videos. It was truly well deserved! Thank you for sharing another excellent experience!. Blessings to you!
What an amazing castle and the period homes in the village…stunning. Another place to add to our always growing “to visit” list. Lovely to watch this video on a snowy morning in Canada.
Lovely! I was born in Portsmouth and my Mother’s family were originally from Portchester. There are even graves of my relatives in the churchyard there. I live in Canada now, but it’s always lovely to see my old home.
Just want to say thanks for the videos you two make. I am from western Canada and am locked inside due to a deep freeze of -40 So, there's not much to do but hide indoors and watch your channel. Thanks for what you do. Take care
I was visiting the UK in 2023, after watching your videos l made sure l had a couple of days in York. I also stayed in Portsmouth for a few days, thank you for the memories🐨🦘🐨🦘😊
Very interesting as always. Hope all is well. We are experiencing very cold temps a little unusual for Tx. Oh well just more time to sit and see what you two are up too. Hugs and blessings.
Pretty cold here too and snow expected any day. I must say I prefer that to the terrible high winds and rain that has flooded the country for much of the festive season.
@@MemorySeekers it s10:00 am and it’s 23F and our high for the day is to be 32 F. High next two days 28F. Don’t know what that is in C but cold lol. Just praying the electricity stays on and no problems there. I don’t like the extreme heat but it’s Tx so we know that’s going to happen. Weather is always an interesting topic. So you go see and film interesting and lovely places so we can have that to enjoy when the weather is crazy. Hugs and many blessings.
Another wonderful video highlighting both the history and beauty of an area. Your videos always make me want to get on a plane and see the site you featured for myself. Thank you.
I live in Fareham, the town next door to Portchester. I feel blessed to have this beautiful piece of history so close by. It's truly a place of beauty. My girlfriend's mother and father were married at the church within the grounds. She never fails to remind of this, or the fact that she wants to be married there too... 😱 (One day I might make that happen!) If you go to the mariner and park the car there you will find a nice cafe on the water to grab a cup of tea and to the left there's the start of the England coastal path. It's a lovely walk along toe paths (with the odd hop up from the beach to contend with) that takes you all the way to the castle. I recommend starting from there if you're upwardly mobile. It also takes you past Turret House and past the village. Turret House has it's own dock within the grounds and is itself an historical building. The village itself is beautiful and almost frozen in time. Incredibly quaint with most of the historical architecture still present, this is where we plan on retiring to. Now, it's time to pull my boots on, hitch the dog to the lead and head out to Portchester for a Sunday stroll!
Wow as a Canadian I'm absolutely awestruck at the history, architecture,Beauty of the U.K.!At every turn things are so different and it all seems to work-every home seems to exude a character all it's own!My Heritage is from the U.K. and I must have this Love for what I see in these tremendous mini documentaries. Also watch "Escape to the Country" with it's absolutely Phenomenal presenters who I find just second to none Nicki, Johnny,Alistar,Jules,Ginny,Steve,Sonali,Margherita etc. -need I say more!!!!They showcase all of the Gorgeous, innovative, spectacular aspects much as you do in this cliip! Well I had a period as a young child that I spoke with an english accent, know now I should have married a Lady from the U.K. that quite frankly would have suited me down to the ground as I then would have had a direct connection and the circle would have been complete! Then there is U.K. music which is unrivaled as well!!! Thankyou and Cheers to you all in your Blessed Magical U.K. Isles!
Watch the start of the video again as Simon explained that they had been to Portsmouth and taken the ferry service from there and he then talks about porchester castle being across the water around the other side of Portsmouth so play from the start, listen and watch as the Portsmouth and Porchester village is discussed 😀
Wonderful video, thankyou. I lived in Portchester for over 30 years and loved walking along the shore to the castle with my dogs and family. Loved watching your video, thankyou xxx
Outstanding..marvelous ❤ info & the entire video is more than I could ever ask for 😊 thank u for sharing, castle & the large grounds are fantastic to walk and explore 😀 just peaceful & lovely 😍background music is so soothing 👍👌
I grew up in Portchester from the ages of 7 to 16 (I left in 1986) and went to 2nd Portchester Cub Scouts and was in the choir of St.Mary's Church (in the corner of the castle) for two or three years. I now live in America 🇺🇸 and am now a U.S citizen.
Hi Simon and Will. The castle remains are amazing. I can imagine how beautiful it would have been during its’s heyday. Not so much for the prisoners. The reconstructed theatre was impressive. Portchester, with its various architecture, is very pretty. Took a screenshot of that thatched pink cottage. How lovely. Thanks again and take care til next time. ❤Memory Seekers is a treasure.
I live in the newer part of the village it is a lovely place to live with plenty of places to walk eat drink and visit so nice to be near the sea and all its benefits thanks for bringing it to the nations attention
Went to this castle back in the 1990s. Not too far from the railway station. It's good to see this video, to remind me of how lovely this area is at the rear of Portsmout Harbour. Exceptionally well filmed indeed, so, many thanks for the production.
I love learning about the layer upon layer of history at this site! But not surprising...as they say, "location, location, location"!! The theater reconstruction was wonderful. I became interested in Portsmouth after watching the A&E Series Horatio Hornblower. The Napoleonic Wars are a fascinating part of history, and I was amazed to find that scanned original copies of the London Gazette are available online going back to the late 1700s. Things like Naval officer promotions, seizures of French "prizes", battle victories, etc., still there for us to see. Having grown up here in California, it's mind-boggling to see Roman lighthouses still standing. I'm a bit late watching this one, as we were visiting the gorgeous snowy scenery in Yosemite Valley last week. Nice and quiet the second week of January. I do hope you gents can see it yourselves one day. :)
As usual, very informative and nicely done. Those pretty little houses must be worth a good deal of money. Best wishes for 2024! Greetings from Argentina.
Interesting tour as always. Thanks for the history of that castle. It has certainly seen some history and changes. The village streets were delightful and, in fact, made me want to live in one of those houses. Charming little area and one I would have been unaware of if you had not posted this.
Thank you really enjoyed this i will be putting this on my list, living on the English / Welsh border I did get to see a lot of the castles but this one is quite something .
Anybody who’s watched the 70’s TV series *Colditz* may remember the big escape at the end of series #1. Some of the outdoor escape sequences were filmed at Porchester Castle. In the 1970’s my family ran a small hotel and a number of the crew stayed there with us during filming. I was about 11 at the time and I can remember pestering them to get me Bob Wagner’s autograph. 😃
About 1:40 in they speak of the roman walls beng made of several things including flint. Flint like caveman tools before copper/iron ages? Yes, the flint was sharpened like cave man did and set into the gaps between stones in mortar. I saw this in place at Windsor castle. It dates from much later, this stuff evidently works rather well if the Romans did too.
