That snow the the reason compact tractors are so popular in Alaska. The ability to push the snow to the side of the road then come back with a snowblower attachment to toss it out into the woods means you will only be driving on 1-4 inches of snow at any given time and no fear of the snow banks building up. Getting stuck is a good reason to have some basic supplies in the car/truck at all times from a change of clothes to a way to start a fire even in the rain/snow.
Folks watching winter videos in Alaska always seem to gasp at how cold we get, but the winters are so beautiful! Wow, there was some great scenery in this video...I need a road trip up north hahhahahah
Thanks for checking it out Sean. Our state is so beautiful in the winter. We need to get down your way and checking it out. Haven’t been down the peninsula in awhile. Take care.
I'd really recommend getting an amber cover, or a light bar that has amber LEDs as well. In snow, rain, fog, dust, etc, the white LEDS will hinder you as much as help. Whereas the amber will cut through a lot better. All of my light bars are amber or dual color (amber and white) for that reason. This is also why factory headlights are yellowish in color instead of pure white.
I didn’t know this and appreciate the education. It’s always nice when someone posts a comment that’s constructive and teaches me something. Thanks you.
@@wildwoodoffgridalaska absolutely. Your videos are educational and entertaining. I just thought I'd pass along the little knowledge I do have that might be beneficial. About this and the axle wrap. Love the content, it's super cool to get to start watching just as you are in the beginning stages of your build. I grew up in AK and will be moving back home. How well do you like your diesel in the winter, especially Tok because it gets so cold there? The family I have up there swears by gas trucks for the cold but your ford seems to do really well and I cant recall you saying it had any problems starting it in any videos.
Happy New Year to y’all, can’t wait to see the progress at the new property! Love your choice in music, I host a morning radio show at a country radio station in Louisville, KY
You ain’t joking! I was working from Fairbanks to Glenallen on the pipeline and my work truck is a 2015 Chevy 2500. The lights are just as terrible as your fords but luckily I had the same light bar you do which makes a HUGE difference. If you hit a moose that sucker is coming in the truck with you.
Wow! Major difference with lights. Looks like we’ll be getting a light bar for our truck too. Happy New Years, guys! Maybe we’ll get together for New Years Eve next year.
Unfortunately in Wyoming, light bars can't be used on main roads. I learned that the hard way when I got pulled over for having mine on. They are super useful though and do light up the world. My Dodge truck had awful stock lights too.
I was raised off the tetlin trail not too far away. Always wished for a snow plow. But a good 3 wheeler and a skidoo did just fine. We are building a new cabin ourselves. We have a power pole in the yard but are not hooked up. I love gas lights and 12 volt LED. I hate the cost of power in Tok. Such a ripoff. Stay warm. Great vids.
Looking good! Nice to see you both out and enjoying yourselves. Those are some terrible lights in the truck but you fixed that. Lol. Thanks for sharing and stay warm. Hope you have a happy and safe New Year Celebration! May God Bless you both in the new year. - Tom & LeeAnn
Also, that bouncing in the video when you are in the snow is called axle wrap. It's not good at all. It's your rear axle pivoting up instead of using that energy to turn your tires. I'd look into anti-wrap springs, or possibly traction bars (anti wrap bars). Axle wrap kills your u joints and shock loads your rear end (it's a strong axle but still). I'd look in to mitigating the axle wrap some way if this is a situation you will find yourself in often
God, don't you just hate it when boogers freeze Von? 😁😂 We had 46" of snow come down in one storm here a week ago, what a mess. The Ski areas loved it, me not so much.
LOL!! 🤣😂🤣 Yes, I completely hate it, makes your nose feel heavy 😆 WOW... 46” of snow... reminds me of our days living in Valdez Alaska. I hope you have someone that can help out with shoveling or maybe a snowblower - that sounds like a ton of work! Thank you for the comment Bear, keep them coming - we appreciate the fun you bring to the table 😜😊🙏
Brrr! I liked the video content, showing some perspective to living in AK in winter. Couple of things to comment on. Might do well to invest in a roof rake for snow removal off roofs, RVs etc. You done a good job but as you get older crawling all the way up on a roof poses more risks. The other things that struck me were the differential lock on the pickup and the light bar. The diff lock work really well? Being a Montana born guy I am distrustful of electronic controlled components in vehicles based on extreme cold conditions. The light bar contrast is amazing, I am going to have to look into them. Here in NY north country, whitetails (I call them swamp buggies) are definitely a night time hazard while driving. Lastly, I just love the music you folks put in......so fitting and relevant. Thanks for sharing your adventures and HAPPY NEW YEAR from Champlain Valley, NY.
Thank you Bret. I have to say, the differential lock worked amazingly. We attempted the same road with no lock on and got stuck right away. I’m sure this like all other electronic things, will break at some point but I guess use it while you have it. Happy New Year!!🎆🎊
That was a lot of snow to shovel off the RV. How many times during the winter will you have to do that? So happy for you Von to be feeling better...that pain can be so excruciating. Prayers for you that it will keep improving and you will soon be totally well. Have a Blessed day.
Happy New Year Margaret! That was the first time so far this winter, we’re keeping an eye out for any snow storm, but we’re thinking maybe two more times. Thank you for the prayers and well wishes, you are such a kind person... it is truly appreciated 🙏😊

Great video, love the music. You need to give Von the camera more often, she's great! Funny, good camera work, and showing you doing all the hard work :) That shudder in 4WD seems suspect. Quick google search yields LOTS of results. Can you manually lock your hubs? Might want to try that. Happy new year's to you both, did you think you'd finish 2020 with 6,180+ subs! Congrats and looking forward to seeing you more in 2021!
Happy New Year to both of you and your family. Moose well the smell they know your not a bear so they can't understand that car's and pickups are. Hitting a moose isn't like hitting a deer something a lot of people down here in the lower 48 wouldn't realize that they are bigger than Elk. On the 22 driving to Lawton OK someone hit a Elk. Between eagle river and anchorage they use to say on a sign how many moose had been hit for the year
I want nothing to do with hitting a moose. I’ve seen first hand the damage they can inflict on a vehicle and person. Last. Looked they still had that sign up and running. Not sure what the counts up to this year.
What is the average temperature in the dead of winter there in Tok, and how long are those frigid temperatures? Also, how do you not go nutty from being “snowed in”, and what’s the name of your church? My husband and I really enjoy your channel, and it’s refreshing to see you’re not afraid to praise Jesus openly.

I'm a transport driver and I see lots some nights up to 20 or more depending on how much snow there is and I find that putting light down low is the snow banks block the light and you don't see them till they get over the snow bank and with the lights up high you see up to the tree line. I hope this help you out sorry for the long story but I hit a moose with my transport at around 85km hour and it ended up in the windshield since then I have lights that light up the road 👍
We’ve had great success with this light and love having it when it’s needed. I do see the benefits of having the light mounted higher but I just do t like the looks of it.
Ok Im telling on myself but my husband laughed at me. Im watching the video of you guys driving and Im sitting all "puckered & clinched" unable to focus on the scenery because you sped up the video and all I can do is watch how fast it looks like your driving on the slick, snow covered roads and my heart is creeping up my throat as Im death gripping my desk chair. Most people are changing out their stock headlight bulbs with bright white LEDs - saves power and gives a lot more light.
We looked into that and opted for the light bar to maximize the light output. May go back and change bulbs as well.
