A Romulan Cruiser that Would Have Beaten the Enterprise - V-6 Gallant Wing Animated Breakdown

  • The V-6 Gallant Wing entered service after the original Bird of Prey, but perhaps not in time to attack the Enterprise as seen in the original series episode Balance of Terror. I speculate that this ship could've have won, or at least survived.

    *Historical holographic recording begins now. Romulus, Senate Chambers, circa unknown.*
    Civilian-in-Service: “The Romulan Senate is now in session, Praetor D’Deridex presiding. Addressee to the Council: Commander Renar T’Lon, of the Warbird S’Task.”
    The council falls silent, with the purple-robed Praetor gesturing slightly with his hand towards the officer at the entrance to the room. Then he speaks, his voice full and young, especially for one of his rank.
    D’Deridex: “Commander, I am told you bring the Senate gifts? Prizes from your recent excursion into the unknown planes of existence.”
    The Commander bows slightly and steps forward onto the map of the Neutral Zone that dominates the floor.
    T’Lon: “I do, your Excellency. It is certain to baffle even the wisest of our nation for some time.”
    The subtle wording does not go unnoticed by the Senate members, many of whom roll their eyes or sigh. The Praetor smiles in good humor.
    “You may address the council before your presentation, if that is your wish. I am certain we would all enjoy being enlightened by the words of a fine officer in our navy, and a master of a raptor, no less.”
    The Senate begins the shift around in their seats, attempting to get comfortable while the Commander begins the usual long-winded speech that will either be about his life and earn him a political position somewhere, or about his military career, which will garner him a promotion, or perhaps he will say something the Tal Shiar disapprove of and simply vanish the next morning. They don’t really care, and they’ve learned to tune it out, anyways.
    “I thank you, Praetor D’Deridex. Then I shall endeavor to illuminate this council without boring them.”
    Empty promises, most of them believed.
    “Eighteen months ago, my vessel encountered an unstable wormhole entrance, as it was prompted to seek out. Like the dozens before, we attempted to direct its stabilization and target a position on the far side of the Neutral Zone.”
    There was a stiffening from the audience. No story or speech? No, he was simply giving the report. What game was this? The senate became intrigued.
    “Like many before it, we projected the vector of the aperture’s exit to cross that of the enemy planet Earth, and so went through. When we emerged, we were left adrift, and attempted to possibly scan the area we’d been taken to. Our vector was correct. The distance and time, were not. After analyzing distant stars and galactic formations with our computer’s imaging sensors, we found we’d traveled to a galaxy that our conventional engines could never reach for sixty four billion years. Oddly enough, if we were to have travelled from our exit point to Earth, going perfectly straight and at maximum warp, we would have arrived the same day we left. It seems fate has an interesting humor, sending us back, a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....”
    Some of the senate laughed at his joke, but others simply scowled. Yet more failures, they might be thinking.
    “However, we did not emerge alone. Our passive sensors detected a vessel was watching our exit, one which we had never seen the like of, except in one classified military report from Commander Keras.”
    The image of the Chimaera appears on a holographic projection above the commander’s head.
    “Three hundred and one thousand standard meters in length, with a mass that is nigh-unattainable for us to put into standard motion. And yet, this was alone, in the middle of empty space, with thousands of black holes within our scanning range, but not one stellar group. Notice too, it has no nacelles, embedded or otherwise. This warship could have torn us asunder, and laid siege to the entire Star Empire on its own!
    Yet... it did not. Instead, it simply waited, and watched. So we waited, and watched it as well. My engineering tactician, who could not be here with me today, tells me that their armor alone could withstand conventional weaponry better than some shields, and that their shields are unlike any we’ve seen before. Like great Federation deflectors, but unfocused and around the entire ship. Physical weapons would be literally bounced off the ship’s signature, and energy dispersed. Our newest and deadly plasma cannon would be worthless against even the smallest ship using it!”
    Now there were hints of fear and interest. The Praetor himself was watching closely now.
    “I would not stand such a threat to conquer my home. I love my people, my nation, and my home planet. I have since I was a boy, waiting tables at my grandmother’s restaurant, and at the military academy where the commandant told me on graduation day: ‘T’Lon, if ever you rise to the rank of commander, and hold more power than a freighter or barge, truly the empire has come to its darkest hour.’ And I tell you plainly, he was correct. Not for why we have come to this darkest hour, but when. I downloaded as many unencrypted files from the enemy vessel as I could, and not I possess star charts and basic history for the entirety of their own Empire. This, Galactic Empire, holds territory across its entire galaxy, and moves with speed across it that dwarfs even the fastest Federation vessel by millions of times! They can build ships the size of stations we only make with the most optimal circumstances, and they have weapons powerful enough to turn planetary surfaces to molten glass within moments! If we were to gain even a tenth of that knowledge, our tactical advantages would grow untold. But while the wormhole that leads there is still stable, I fear for what may come through before or after we attempt to cross again. While we did manage to beam off a few minor pieces of technology in areas that were not fully shielded, they are largely useless. A small hand-weapon, armor of a biped, a robotic box that whistles, and a bipedal android that seems to speak their languages. But the information we retrieved is the true prize. We discovered, that of the hundreds of thousands of crew, soldiers, and officers aboard that ship, only one was an unidentified alien. The rest, were humans.”
    Shock, horror, and anger move throughout the senate, and one woman even pounds her fist against the table in rage.
    “Yes, my lords and ladies of the senate. Humans pervade that entire empire, crushing all those alien to them, and yet thriving like the virus they are. Their lust for power, territory, and resources knows no bounds, and they will strike through to our side soon, make no mistake.
    I do not know what the council will do with my gifts, and I care little either way. I am a soldier of the empire, and I am headed back into that galaxy. I will gather the knowledge and technology to arm our people against this foe, and then build us a fleet in your name, Praetor. One that will not simply defend against the Galactic Empire, but one that will strike fear into the hearts of the Federation, and the Klingons alike. When we show the Galactic Empire we cannot be taken and assimilated, we will instead take foot-hold in their territory and strike down their powerful as we have for other nations of misguided. While one wing covers the Alpha Quadrant, another will spread to cover the distant past galaxy. I know not if other ships will join me, and it may be that the wormholes will close and cut us off from that point forever, but I will not be dissuaded from my actions! The raptor does not defend or cower, but attacks from the unknown above, and evades the strikes of lesser beings. Will I be alone in emulating our patron beast?!”
    Silence followed the question, but the Praetor did not remain still. He stood, and opened his arms wide.
    “No, you will not be alone. The Gallant Wings and some of our other ships are nearing time for refit and retirement. Yet how can we squander such tools in such a desperate time? A fleet of sixteen ships shall be assembled at the Imperial Shipyards above Hobus IV, and when they are finished with their repairs and refits, they shall follow you into this other galaxy. Cloaked, you shall seek out the technology and information you say is our key to victory, and then return here again with your second prizes. Is there any dissent?”
    The senate did not shift. They were unanimous.
    “Then I move that we place this delicate action under the direction of someone who has experience in these matters. I move that the command of the task force be to Admiral T’Lon.”
    The vote, was again: unanimous.

      Star Trek technology generally grants warships vastly more accurate weapons systems, sophisticated sensors, more advanced computers and much more efficient energy distribution systems. But, all of that is offset by slower maximum speeds, more fragile hull materials and less efficient defensive shielding. The franchise from TNG forward liked to focus on a cutting-edge appearance for their technology, having most of the Alpha Quadrant powers utilize advanced prototype systems in order to grant them as much of an edge as possible.
      Star Wars technology tends to be along the more "future retro" vein. Their ships are less energy efficient, tend to utilize less sophisticated computer systems and sensors, plus recycling/waste disposal isn't any more advanced than we have right now. However they make up for this with much more powerful (if less accurate) weapons systems, the ability to harness and store more energy at once (Star Destroyers are a great example; their fusion core is basically a miniature sun) and their vessels can cover a lot more distance at faster-than-light speeds. Plus they can take one Hell of a beating in combat.
      Personally, I say pick your poison. Combat vessels and fleets in both franchises have their pros and cons.

    The Empire would have a particularly hard time fighting the Romulans. While cloaking technology does exist in the Star Wars universe, it's extremely rare and not seen in anything larger than a corvette. A capital grade warship with a cloak is unheard of and would take any Star Destroyer by surprise the first time. And even once the Empire knew what they were up against they would be very hard to fight. If Star Fleet sensors have a hard time detecting a Romulan cloak then Imperial sensors would stand no chance of spotting them until it's too late, striking them in their weak spots before quickly fading

    The Enterprise still out guns this. 18 Phaser Banks (20 on the Discovery version) with full 360 degree firing arc, plus forward and aft Photon Torpedo launchers. The refit version only seems to have 2 forward Torpedo launchers for some reason. The V6 Gallant has 6 Disruptor banks vs the 18 Phaser Banks of the Enterprise, but that Lethal Plasma Torpedo is a huge problem. The Romulans either stoped using those Plasma Torpedos after Balance Of Terror, or the Enterprise Shields got one hell of an upgrade. As in the Deadly Years the Enterprise Shields tanked a bunch of Torpedos from Romulan Bird Of Preys.

    I have a question. Can deflectors stop transporter beams? I feel like they would be ineffective, in SW we usually see things passing through deflector shields unhampered, so there wouldn’t be anything stopping the Romulans from pulling a Stargate Atlantis and just beaming a nuke(most likely a plasma torpedo) aboard a Star Destroyer and utterly dominating the Empire. The only major advantage the Empire possesses is FTL, hyperdrives are just ridiculous and that would be the first thing the Romulans would rectify + combining hyperdrives with warp drives would give the Romulans unprecedented mobility, overcoming the reliance on hyperlanes and complex navigation by giving them the possibility of overcoming obstacles at warp. Getting a hyperdrive should be trivial for the Romulans, just beam it out of a ship or beam the crew out, whatever comes first.

    • @resurrectedstarships
      @resurrectedstarships  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I believe that Star Wars shields are likely strong enough to dampen transporters...IF they are up. However we do not normally see that tactic you describe used even in Star Trek when both ship's shields are down leading me to believe there may be some lower level dampening field to prevent hostile transporters during combat; as an aside even without this perhaps it takes some skill to transport to a ship that may be moving any which way in combat or emitting various forms of radiation.

    • @SchneeflockeMonsoon
      @SchneeflockeMonsoon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Interestingly, one of the original scripts for this video had the Gallant Wing beaming OFF several bits of the Star Destroyer’s loose tech., which would help to balance that advantage later on, as Thrawn would begin his Defence by finding a way to prevent that from working.

    • @liamwarner5749
      @liamwarner5749 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Starwars hyperdrives aren't actually that good in my opinion. They're designed about the hyperlanes and are considerably less effective when you move off those if the maps are anything to go by. Modern movies both Trek and Wars seem happy to ignore travel time in favour of blowing things up. Anyway I imagine on the hyperspace lanes starwars would have a speed advantage but off them the Trek ships would have the advantage because their speed can be applied anywhere.

    We saw Thrawn bombard Chopper base with three ISDs. Judging by the damage they did (they scorched an area a few hundred meters across), all three of them would have gotten smoked by a single standard Bird of Prey - Outpost 4 was a mile deep on an asteroid, and two shots obliterated the entire asteroid and the base with it.

      That doesn't say that much. Officers who take pride in the vessel they serve on aren't necessarily objective and therefore unreliable narrators. They may consider their ship the praeotor's finest, but that doesn't mean the praetor thinks so, too. Besides: Sending a ship against an unknown enemy to gauge their strength does carry the risk to lose that ship. Telling the crew they and their finest in the fleet - even though they chose were because that's exactly what their ship is not - is a cheap way raise the morale of that crew so their performance doesn't suffer from the expression of being expendable.

    • @mickmerr
      @mickmerr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MrAranton i think you are extrapolating far to much there with no basis.
      Career officers have pride but are professional and would never refer to their vessel as the finest unless it had at least some factual basis.
      If you watch the episode with the new weapon and cloak plus highly experienced commander it's clear that this is a top of the line ship.
      Also in "the enterprise incident" the romulans start using klingon designs as their own were inferior in terms of warp etc.
      Good concept and video but ultimately This ship was conceived in a game decades after the fact. It just doesn't fit...

    • @MrAranton

      @@mickmerr
      Pointing out that not all narrators are reliable isn't that much of an extrapolation. It's something you should always keep in mind.
      Plus: There's a lot of room for subjectivity in the term "fine". Scotty is a career officer, and he says plenty of deragatory things about ships that are not the Enterprise to justify why "his" ship is the finest in the fleet. Which during the movie era includes Excelsior, which is clearly the more advanced vessel and much mor worthy of the title "the Federation's finest" than Enterprise (both NCC-1701 and NCC-1701-A) at this point. Also: What is Enterprise doing in Wrath of Khan before they respond to the emergency call from Regula station? A training cruise with shipload of cadets. What are Starfleet's plans for Enterprise in "The Search for Spock?" Not to repair the damage the ship sustained fighting Khan and to decomission it. Which indicates: Starfleet Command does not think Enterprise is their finest ship. If they thought so, they wouldn't use Enterprise for training cruises or decomission her because it took some damage. So much for the objectivity of the career officer Montgomery Scott...

      1. Scotty isn't a Romulan.

    The Bird of Prey seemed to be more of a scout ship than a full on warship. From what I have read over the years this particular plasma torpedo used in Balance of terror was experimental and only fitted to that 1 ship. It was powerful but required tremendous amounts of power to be fired. Which handicapped the BOP somewhat. When the ship was destroyed the Romulans decided not to continue using the weapon and fitted their ships with standard torpedo's.

  • @wchisholm2368

    A horizontal warp core is not all that strange so the arrangement shown in the video is quite reasonable. For example, according to Jefferies the TOS Enterprise had one that was transverse mounted between the nacelle struts and ran under the floor of the warp engineering rooms seen on the show (the same set represented three different engineering spaces, the port and starboard warp rooms just forward of the shuttlebay, and the impulse engineering room at the back of the saucer, which is why it looks so radically different in various episodes). And they actually show the horizontal warp core in an episode of TAS. It wasn't until the refit that the Enterprise started using the relatively new vertical warp core design.
    I am not convinced about the fusion plasma power though, not only is there is no way it would produce enough power, the dialog actually mentioned the torpedo being antimatter based plasma, not a fusion product. Also, Scotty found no sign of a conventional warp drive system in the Romulan ship in Balance of Terror, just simple impulse even though its presence was impossible without an FTL drive of some sort due to the distances involved. That is one of the main things the singularity system was thought up to explain, and works if they used some sort of gravity based FTL system that was not as efficient as warp drive until they got warp technology from the Klingons.
    The original warbird in that episode seems to have been something like a real world monitor, a rather slow ship built around a single dreadnaught level weapon meant for shore bombardment rather than ship-to-ship combat since they apparently carried no weapons except for that massively powerful torpedo system and its nuclear self-destruction charges.

      A slaughter? The Romulans can fire from far, far outside the Star Destroyer's range and cloak before TIEs could even get close. Remember, just two Plasma Torpedoes from the TOS era could pulverize shielded, 2-mile diameter asteroids of nearly solid iron (objects at minimum, twice as large as a Star Destroyer and far more dense). These torpedoes could also travel at warp speed. Star Destroyers, with all their turbolasers, cannot match this kind of firepower or speed.

    The original warbird was not destroyed by the Enterprise, it was destroyed by its own captain after being severely damaged by the Enterprise and after refusing Kirk's offer to beam over survivors. The distinction between being destroyed by the Enterprise and destroyed by its own crew was important in the show, because it contrasted Romulan values to Federation values, and as such is not a minor gripe.

    V-6 (Gallant Wing) Class X - XII Cruiser
    Known Sphere Of Operation: Empire-wide use
    Data Reliability: A
    Major Data Source: Combat reports
    The V-6 class was considered to be the ultimate replacement to fill the need for both a military vessel and a research vessel. Designed much like Star Fleet research cruisers, they are well equipped for research duties and for combat.
    At the time of their introduction about Stardate 2/09, they were the most powerful ships in the fleet. The Type 1 mounted six of the most powerful disruptors available and the RPL-2 plasma weapon. Although these vessels never saw combat with any Federation ships, it is speculated that this model would have been an even match for a Constitution Class cruiser.
