I just go a fresh d3200 and freaked out when I wasn't able to change the settings I needed to get that nice cinematic look. This video was a lifesaver! Thank you sir!
Hey Flutterby, The D5200 is a great little machine that packs a big punch. We will posting quite a few more videos very soon on using the camera getting the most from it. Auto focus in still is pretty easy to control, in live view you will have a square in the screen just move that to where you want to focus using the mutl selector switch, also in your menu you can have a few different settings for autofocus from single point to continuous focus for moving subjects that will keep it in focus.
Hey Juan, If you change the white balance settings that will change the kelvin scale to warmer or colder ie: tungsten wb balance is 3200k so will be a lot warmer than say shade which will be a lot cooler more blue roughly 6000+k, you can set your own preset one and save it for a specific project go to white balance and then get a gray/white card and then pres "pre" this will save your preset and then just name it. Another way of checking is get your live view on change it watching it.
Thanks, that was very helpful! Regarding recording audio, I would say that -12dB is a region to aim for, but clipping (distortion) only starts at 0dB. The prevailing idea is that the higher you can record the audio, peaking say at -3 or -6dB, the better your signal-to-noise ratio. Going over 0dB is definitely a no-no in digital, as distorted signals cannot be recovered. I look forward to an "intermediate" tutorial at shooting video with the D5200!
There are two sets of options, depending on whether you have chosen NTSC or PAL as your outputs. we are based in the UK so are PAL, which offers us 50p and 25p. if you are using NTSC, then you get 60p and 30p
Standard Nameo this is a difficult one, because there is an autofocus function on the d500, but i am not sure about the d7100. on the d5200, you can only shoot video through the view finder. in order to change the autofocus settings for video, switch to viewfinder, press the i button and select focus. when in the viewfinder setting you will see options AF-S (single focus) or AF-F (continuous focus). perhaps it is the same for the d7100....
Want to mention that I just received a mini HDMI to VGAA/V Adapter, that has a 3.5mm earphone jack, and allows me to monitor the audio with earphones. Really cheap from China. Thought I'd take a chance, since I believe it was under $15.00.USD...Just plug the mini HDMI connection into the camera, and earphones into the earphone jack. While monitoring during recording, utilizing a shot gun mike, there's a bit of an echo, but with a wireless lav connected, it's surprisingly good. (I did use a Beachtec XLR connector, that allowed me to boost the audio.) Didn't try without that Beachtek adapter yet, but will try to tomorrow. Listening to the recorded audio, was truly great. Hopes this helps any question re; the lack of earphone jack problem. Regards, Ron
My suggestions is everything with Video, so it's totally perfect ;) Maybe if you could make a video about Lenses in filming, so whats important and which lenses are good for which film situation. I know you have a video about lenses, but a video more about lenses in filming. That would be really nice :)
I've just picked-up the Nikon, and I'm wondering what lens would you recommend for shooting a wedding video, I was thinking the Nikon 35mm f1.8 G AF-S DX Lens, what do you think?
Yes , or a 50mm. either 1.4 or 1.8. you will need to be pretty close to the action, but the quality will be excellent. shoot wide on 1080 if you can, then let the editing software crop tighter etc..

Hello, i'm so confused between buying a nikon d5200 or canon 700D, i'll use it for videos more than pictures. plz give me ur opinion - thanks in advance
Fuat Rhiyouhri ok, i have looked at the Canon, and i would say that as a stills camera the nikon has some real advantages - the lenses are better, the file size is better and the view screen is better. for video, they are pretty much the same. one advantage of the canon is the touch screen, but that is all.
hi i am a beginner nikon d5200 dslr owner, so i wanted to know what lens should i use for all purposes.... i like to shoot nature photography and sometimes macro shots....and i like to make videos while going on trip....previously i used to do all this with my mobile but now i want to invest in some good lense for my dslr so i want your suggestion thanks...
well it is safe to say that you can't do it all with a single lens. for nature i would look at the nikkor AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5 5.6 IF ED lens. for video check out the nikon 35mm f1.8 G AF-S DX lens. the 70-300 can also shoot macro - though it isn't designed for that. remember your lenses with last longer than your body, so don't be afraid to invest in good glass..
I have a Rode Shotgun NTG-2 mic which I am intending to use at a wedding next week. If you can help, whats the best settings for audio on this? Thanks, very helpful video :)
+British Small Biz Videos I'd love to know that too, if you don't mind... My mic is the Rode VideoMic Directional On-camera (this one: www.rode.com/microphones/videomic)
+Humberto Abdo Hi Humberto, ok this is a really good mic. the important thing is to know that there is a small compartment where the battery goes with two tiny switches in it. both the switches must be to the left (0db). after that you set up the Mic on the camera and look at the levels on the back of the camera. I am assuming you have a d5200, but most cameras have a similar set up. go into audio levels and switch to manual, then set the level at between 8 -10. 8 is less sensitive, but will give you reasonable sound quality. what you don't want is to have the Mic too sensitive, as then you get hiss and background noise. Practice a little so that you are confident for the big day. If you want more control, go to my video here: th-cam.com/video/1kcdpJF1Oig/w-d-xo.html , which shows you how you can listen to the audio as it goes into the camera. basic rules are get as close as you can and try to avoid echo. hiss is less of a problem as it can be removed, but you can't take out echo.
+CameraWize Photography I was aware of that switch after watching a video, but I don't quite understand how to change it... All I can see is a transparent lever that seems too hard to move. Thanks for the reply, though! If only there was an image of someone pulling this switch so I can see it...
Just getting back to you to let you know that I managed to see the switches. They are VERY little, aren't they? But again, thanks a lot for the tips, I'm a beginner and I'm very excited to test this mic with the D5200.

Hey, Jeff! 😃 I'm using a D5200, and I'm totally going to subscribe to your channel! So much fun to see other people enjoying this camera! 📷🎬 This comment totally made my night. *Have a nice day!* 💟
I know I am very late on this but after spending countless of hours to search the TH-cam for the best Vlog-camera, my wife reminded me of our old Nikon D5200. I remember having Hughe problems getting the focus right. Is there any such a thing like auto focus on this camera, in video mode? Best regards! :) Ricard, Sweden
Hello Richard, well you wife is right, of course. I shoot all my videos on my Nikon D5200 and it works very well. However, for vlogs I would recommend that you don't move around too much. The autofocus will work and follow you around (set it to AF-F), but it can spend time searching for focus and that is very distracting. If you can, keep to a focal plane going across the front of the camera, rather than towards and away from it, or do as I do and set the focus with a reasonable aperture (f/8 at least) switch focus off and then try not to move around too much. Also, it is worth getting a better lens if you only have the kit lens.
Love the video! But just curious i bought my d5200 mainly to record makeup tutorials.. Do you know how to have the camera on autofocus while recording because I just cant get it to auto focus on me or new things I want it to focus on unless I press the capture button to have it focus :( i hope you can help !! Thanks
Hi, the best way for you to do this is to set your focus mode to AF-F ( use the lever to switch to the viewing screen, press the i button and the focus option is bottom line second from the left). However, this may not work very well for you, as the lans may be quite noisy when re-focussing. I would suggest setting the focus beforehand and then switching to manual, so that the camera is constantly focussed. you will have to move into the area which is in focus, which takes some practice, but means there will be no refocossing noise...

This video reminded me of The Mighty Boosh: Call of the Yetti When Howard Moon was running Vince through his wildlife lessons. Not to offend you, you're not boring its just your voice and the way youre talking about it. A great video, thanks a lot, helped me a lot ^.^
I have a problem with my camera Nikon d5200 my videos look very cold toned I don't know how I can change this! When I take pictures it looks fine but when I'm filming the colors doesn't look like they are in reality! Could you help me?
+dolcelauri 7 have you looked at your picture controls? Picture control is in the Shooting Menu. There are six options that come with the camera. Standard, Neutral, vivid, etc. take a look and see if changing that makes a difference..
Sidra Hi, i suggest you shoot on 720 and normal quality instead of high quality. I can understand that you want to keep the file sizes small, but in my experience keeping the amount you shoot to a minimum is more effective. Remember when you have uploaded it to TH-cam, they will generate different versions with different resolutions, so people can watch in places where the line speeds are quite low. good luck! let me know when the videos are uploaded...
yes it is, but there are two issues. Firstly that the lens may need to refocus and the noise of that might be heard in the sound track. Also, if you are using a long zoom (i.e. going from a long zoom to a short zoom number) that could affect the aperture. for example the kit lens is f3.5 at 18mm, but the will be f5.3 at 55mm. that could affect the way the video looks.
Thanks for the great tips! Definitely did not know about the mic info, so that was a big help and also for shooting in 720 and using it to slow down for slowmo. Wicked tips. Just subbed. Keep it coming! =D
Hi, I don't think there should be a problem. You will probably want to edit the video first. I would recommend doing that on another computer and then uploading it to your ipad. But it would be just as easy i think, if yo have internet access, to load your vids up to a youtube channel and then you can play them on anything.
firstly I would use a tripod to keep it steady, probably shoot manual and set the metering to centreweighted. I would shoot a test to check of there was flickr at 1/50 second 1/60 second and then make sure that I was shooting at that speed. with the shutter speed fixed, i would have the lens near its sweet spot for aperture and then drop the ISO as much as possible. good luck.
Well done! When using an optional external mic, (Rode Pro) will the camera mic settings, be very similar in sensitivity to the camera's internal mic, or do you have to over compensate a tad? Thnx, Ron
Will the camera automatically split the video without interrupting the recording or will you have to manually start the recording again after the recording limit is hit?
I don't know if this is true, but i have always been told that it is to do with tax. Apparently if it can record over 20 minutes at a time it is a video recorder. Under 20 minutes and it is a camera. and they are taxed differently in Europe.....
Hey thanks a lot for taking the time to reply back .. I'll definitely keep that into account once I do my purchase. It's my first DSLR and my knowledge about photography and its related stuff is actually terrible. Thanks you :)
What lens would you recommend for videos? and...what should the picture type be set on at the top of the camera? (like action/portrait etc). I change is sometimes due to brightness, but I wonder if there is a constant setting.
Hi, it depends what you are shooting, but a 50mm f1.8 would be good for most things. I find that I tend to shoot on shutter speed priority when I can. It is really important that the shutter speed is twice the frame rate. so if you are shooting 50 or 60 frames per second, then you need to have shutter speed at 1/125, likewise if you are shooting 25/30 frames per second, then you need to be at least 1/60sec. If you set the shutter speed, you can change the ISO and apertures to match.
the 18-55mm is a pretty good all round lens. The 18-105mm isn't as good. It depends on what kind of photography you want to do. Generally speaking if you get a 50mm f1.8 , 18-55mm kit lens and 55-200mm, you are pretty well covered.
How do I make my auto-focus settings work better? I have it turned on for video mode, but it is very slow and very selective as to what it will focus on. Is there a way to just set infinite focus so I don't have to worry about mid range or close range objects going in and out of focus?
mcanedo92588 have you ever found the answer? That's what im trying to figure out. I'm using it on a tripod and when I move things closer it doesn't focus on that object
tommy f. yes it is, but i would say that this is not something the d5200 excels at. the lens can be quite noisy when focussing, which would affect your sound recording and it isn't terribly smooth visually. manual focus would be a better option, though that in difficult to get right.
we use a rode videomic. it works well. whatever you choose, make sure it is unidirectional mono, not omnidirectional stereo, otherwise you will pic up everytthing...

Hello....Im a short film maker, can you please tell me hows this D5200 is useful for me, and also explain me what kinds of video modes are available in this camera. I'm planing to purchase it by 1st week of nov'13
Hi, I have a question. I have a Nikon D5200 and its my first camera so I am still learning. I was wondering why is its that when I shoot a video whenever people get closer to the camera the picture gets darker and when they move away the picture get brighter. Do i have some kind of setting on? I would just like to know how to stop that from happening. Thanks.
Can I use a LAPEL mic with my Nikon D5200.... I got one and when I am recording it is not picking up the sound and only the background noise. Please can you advise.
i want to ask u can u make 1 video that show how to record video i mean like there is 1 logo which is unblur and after focus it get clear like that can u tell me how to do that?
I recently received a Nikon D5500 for my birthday and when I record video it picks up loud noises that's coming from within the camera. Could this be the settings or the camera itself? Ive set it up like your video.
Wani Ray ok what do the noises sound like/ if it sounds like the lens refocussing, then you need to switch the lens to manual. if the noise sounds like something inside the camera, then check the levels of your sound recording ( you should be aiming for 12 when recording). if that is ok and you still hear the sounds, then you may have problem.
But I have an almost-stupid question (bear with me; I'm new to all this!). Should I be using the standard lens that comes with the camera (after adjusting all the movie settings of course)? I went and bought a 50mm 1.8 focus lens for portrait shots. Can I use that? Thanks!
+Melissa Aflalo you can use any lens, they will have the same properties and differences as when you shoot photos with them. high aperture (such as using the lens at 1.8) becomes something to be more aware of when filming as you may need a greater depth of field due to moving elements
+Sheila House Hi, I am not sure to be honest, but if found this on imaging - resource dotcom 'The Nikon D5200 saves its video files in the MOV format, using MPEG-4 encoding, with two choices of bit rates. The HD formats can be recorded in a High quality level of 24 Mbps or a Normal quality level of 12 Mbps. The SD resolution video also has two bit rate options of 8 and 5 Mbps.' Hope that helps!
Hi, generally speaking the interlaced option is a bit of a con. with the p setting, the frame is changed 24 times a second. This can have problems, particularly with aliasing. The interlaced option is supposed to address that, It appears to be faster, but in fact it changes only half the frame each time. in other words 50i changes 50 x half the frame per second. this effects the quality of the video. Most people avoid interlaced if they can.
Hello, Great video! I wondered if you could help. I've shot a few test videos on my D5200 but when I import it into Final Cut Pro, pixels and blocks of colour are everywhere. I've searched about this problem and it's apparently quite common. I need a HD converter to adapt the MOV files created into a file that can be read by common editing applications. Are there any you recommend? What do you edit your videos with? Thanks in advance, Eric
Hi Eric, this isn't a problem that I have come across. We use FCP without any trouble. Are you shooting p or interlaced? we found that interlaced can sometimes produce blocking.

Thank you for this informative video, sir. It helped me a lot. :) Just one thing... Every time I watch a video that I just recorded using my Nikon D5200, there's this "annoying" sound that's always present. It sounds like 2 consecutive shutter sounds and it goes like every 5 seconds. How do I get rid of that? :(

no, i think the maximum for a single continuous shot is twenty minutes. Obviously you can shoot more than one depending on the capacity of your memiry card.
+Mateusz Slawinski you can record as much as you want, but only 20 minutes at a time. how much you record in total is dependent on the size of your memory card
Hi Nabeel, The D5200 can only record upto 20 minutes at highest quality 29 minutes 59 seconds at normal quality, you will have to split your video at a suitable point and join them in post production.
Hi bro! Your video was very useful, I did a video recording and this tutorial was the best. But now I need your help. When I want to made a shot but in camera using live view, the program is set and I do not know if it's possible to remove the program. How do you erase or set the camera so you can made a shot, but using live view and the values for video recording doesn´t interfere when you do a photography with the live view? (I hope you can tell me. By the way, I was watching you from Mexico).
Ok, you can take pictures and shoot videos using the liveview screen. because you use two different buttons for video and stills, you can shoot each on different settings. Ideally, if you shoot on the M setting, for Manual you can set the ISO, Aperture and shutter speed for stills and for video. the additional setting for video is framerate. You cannot take a still image while you are shooting video, but you can use the same settings. If that doesn't answer your question, come back to me..
Hi, it's me again! I'm going to do more experiments with my camera and I will come back and tell you. But in other subject, I would like to ask you about flashes. In did about SB 300 nikon flash. I have camara Nikon D5300, recently I bought a SB 300 Flash, of NIkon. I do not know if with this flash is possible to shot (in manual, I always use manual), in superior ISO 100, like 400, 600, 800, 1000, ... so on. Because I'm going to use with no much light and for images in movement. So when I do a shot and press the botton down full, I've seen that is delay, is not instantaneous. It's normal? I'm not sure, but when I used the internal flash I haven't seen that delay. Why? And how can I avoid that delay? Please, help me!
it sounds like there is a delay because of the poor light. if it is dark and the camera finds it difficult to focus, it will use a small pre flash to help focus. that will slow taking pictures.
Can this camera be hooked up to a video switcher using HDMI to work in conjunction with two or three more Nikon D5200s for a multi-cam video shoot? Not recording to memory cards, but sending the video direct to the switcher and recording the shoot on a laptop?
yes the D5200 can shoot videos. there is really no difference, but if you want to shoot something to show on a large screen then you should set the camera to 1920 x 1080 and have a 25fps frame rate.
Hello, so I just got the D5500 and recorded my first video of myself, watching it back I realized that it always had to refocus on me as I moved, and it wasn't like I was walking, I was just moving my head while talking and it still did that, how do I change that so the autofocus focuses on everything on the screen?
Shem Goltz yes, the best thing to do, is set the focus by putting something where you will be, and then with the lens to manual, so that the focus doesn't continually change..
I work in manual mode. It is easier for me to change the shutter speed and aperture, though the shutter speed is the most important, i think - you need to keep it at roughly twice the frame rate.
It's a very useful video. Thanks for sharing. I have faced a problem while shooting. Brightness of video changes as things moved. Kindly refer me to a video about white balance. Thank you
yes, set it so that the peak sound hits 12. for example, i usually have it in 8-9 setting, so that when the speaker raises their voice little, it peaks at 12. it is always good to test the sound first if you can..
Hi Sir, a question. When making videos for youtube with this camera, you'll get a sound from the focus. I attached a Rode-Go, is there any way to fix this?
If you attach the microphone to the external socket, then you will get some noise as the autofocus lens focuses. You have two choices: you can either focus manually, which takes practice, but can be effective, or you need to record the sound separately. You can record sound on a specific recorder or with an app on your mobile phone. Depending the phone, you can use your microphone. There is an advantage to this - you can get the microphone much closer to the sound source so it is better quality. then you synchronise the sound and video in your editing suite.
Your videos are very informative, Thank you! Is there a way to show the time and date when playing the video back on a computer? I do have the time and date stamp option set on the D5200.

I shot video yesterday and saw that it was very choppy and there was a lot of pauses. What did I do wrong? was it the shutter speed, the aperture or something else?
Gari Harvey difficult to say, but it could be the shutter speed ratio. generally speaking the shutter speed should be twice the film speed, so if it is 30 frames per second, the shutter speed should be 1/60. try it on auto for everything as a test and see if it is better...
I use this camera for all my videos and it is pretty good. But I must stay that this is a stills camera that shoots video. You might want to look at a proper video camera if you are going to shoot weddings professionally.
I would stick to PAL. Although they are changing it to DVBT, most Tvs will still run on PAL. in actual fact, if you convert your videos to mp4s it doesn't make a huge amount of difference, and remember that many videos are watched on computers these days....
Great video very helpful setting up my d5200... Please upload this video about recording video soon... Any tips on auto focus or just keeping the little bugger in focus would be helpful :P I lOve this camera and took my time when spending the cash for it... more detailed videos please - great stuff :D
+Heyitsshreya Hi, it is best to use HD. depending on your equipment, either 1080 or 720. always use P if you can rather than interlaced. I prefer to use 720 at 50 frames per second. TH-cam will offer your video at different settings anyway, according to the viewer's download speed, but it is better to have a larger file than a smaller one..
Hi could you please tell me how to use digital zoom when you're shooting videos. Is it possible at all? I mean when the camera is rolling and the shot needs a slow close up. Using a zoom lens always results in a loss of focus.
1. in nikon d5200 i didn't find frame size/frame rate of 1960*1080; 60p and 1080*720; 60p. so how can i shoot videos in 1960*1080; 60p and 1080*720; 60p in nikon d5200. is there any alternative? 2. how to set aspect ratios of video in nikon d5200?
+Kishore yadav hello, have you been in to the set up menu, video mode, to set up either PAL or NTSC. you will only get 1920 x 1080 60i with the NTSC setting. the d5200 shoots 16x9 aspect ratio
+Nikon D5200 Channel can you please tell me. 1.what is the difference b/w PAL and NTSC? 2. which mode (PAL or NTSC) is better to make high quality video? 3.what is the difference between 50i and 50fps? 4.at what frame size and frame rate is to set, to make slow motion video?
+Kishore yadav Hi, PAL and NTSC are different settings for televisions. In UK and most of Europe TVs are PAL. In USA they are NTSC. If there is a chance that you will put your videos into a TV, I advise that you use the appropriate system, which makes the 'which is best?' question moot. they are actually both about the same.. The difference between i and fps is that for fps the camera will take 50 frames per second - that is 50 separate frames. that is like old film reels, which have separate frames. i is an old way of trying to seem to have 50 frames per second. i stands for interlaced and effectively takes half a frame per second - every other horizontal line. the best for slow motion is 720/50 fps. check out the video: th-cam.com/video/O4hyXofjEQA/w-d-xo.html
+LizardLickgaming COD2master yes you can shoot 720p video with this camera, which is good enough for youtube. The d5200 shoots a higher grade video, 1080., but 720 is fine for most youtube needs...
I just go a fresh d3200 and freaked out when I wasn't able to change the settings I needed to get that nice cinematic look. This video was a lifesaver! Thank you sir!
Hey Flutterby,
The D5200 is a great little machine that packs a big punch.
Hey Juan,
If you change the white balance settings that will change the kelvin scale to warmer or colder ie: tungsten wb balance is 3200k so will be a lot warmer than say shade which will be a lot cooler more blue roughly 6000+k, you can set your own preset one and save it for a specific project go to white balance and then get a gray/white card and then pres "pre" this will save your preset and then just name it.
Interesting tutorial. Thank you even though I didn't hear about Africa. Is this camera made only for Europe and the US?
There are two sets of options, depending on whether you have chosen NTSC or PAL as your outputs. we are based in the UK so are PAL, which offers us 50p and 25p. if you are using NTSC, then you get 60p and 30p
Is there a way to have autofocus in video mode without having to keep depressing the shutter? I'm using a d7100
Regards,
Ron
I've been having so much trouble shooting video with this! Thank-you so much!!

Can we make video more than half an hour in this camera...... plzz reply
Hi may I know in the manual sensitivity what is the most suitable number in outdoors
hi i am a beginner nikon d5200 dslr owner, so i wanted to know what lens should i use for all purposes.... i like to shoot nature photography and sometimes macro shots....and i like to make videos while going on trip....previously i used to do all this with my mobile but now i want to invest in some good lense for my dslr so i want your suggestion thanks...
well it is safe to say that you can't do it all with a single lens. for nature i would look at the nikkor AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5 5.6 IF ED lens. for video check out the nikon 35mm f1.8 G AF-S DX lens. the 70-300 can also shoot macro - though it isn't designed for that. remember your lenses with last longer than your body, so don't be afraid to invest in good glass..
I have a Rode Shotgun NTG-2 mic which I am intending to use at a wedding next week. If you can help, whats the best settings for audio on this? Thanks, very helpful video :)
Julie Saunders hi julie, do you have an email address? i'll send you some info..
+British Small Biz Videos I'd love to know that too, if you don't mind... My mic is the Rode VideoMic
Directional On-camera (this one: www.rode.com/microphones/videomic)
Hi and thanks for the video .. what lens do you recommend for the d5200? Or do you think that the kit lens is fine enough ..

Hi,I'm new to Nikon d5200,I like it,but my only question is can we flash when we shoot a movie?plz help
No, the flash can not be used as a light. You need to buy an accessory for this.
If I am using external microphone do I have to set the microphone to OFF?
no, the camera should just detect the external microphone.
@@NikonD5200Channel Thank you
That's too bad, but thank you for responding. Do you know why they would limit the recording length that way?
We are grateful for this information. Greetings from Mexico!
Thank you so much for the comment back! Super helpful! :)

It is an excellent camera. I shoot my youtube videos on it all the time.
Hey! I want to use my D5200 for shooting youtube videos like 15 mins long. What should I keep the setting at in order to have the smallest file size?
Sidra Hi, i suggest you shoot on 720 and normal quality instead of high quality. I can understand that you want to keep the file sizes small, but in my experience keeping the amount you shoot to a minimum is more effective. Remember when you have uploaded it to TH-cam, they will generate different versions with different resolutions, so people can watch in places where the line speeds are quite low. good luck! let me know when the videos are uploaded...
Is it possible to use the zoom while shooting video by using D5200 and D5300?
yes it is, but there are two issues.
I have this camera. And I record videos. I want to transfer it to my ipad. Is it going to work? Please reply
Hi, I don't think there should be a problem. You will probably want to edit the video first. I would recommend doing that on another computer and then uploading it to your ipad. But it would be just as easy i think, if yo have internet access, to load your vids up to a youtube channel and then you can play them on anything.
It has a mic input jack. Do you need to turn that off so the ext mic works?
If you use this camera for copying 8mm movies from projector what settings would you use?
firstly I would use a tripod to keep it steady, probably shoot manual and set the metering to centreweighted.
Thnx,
Ron
very similar. I hardly notice a difference to be honest.
Will the camera automatically split the video without interrupting the recording or will you have to manually start the recording again after the recording limit is hit?
i have a question, the right side of my internal microphone is not working, is this a setting or a malfunction of the camera? NIKON D5200
Thank you!
wow! thanks helped a lot. HOOLYWOOD HERE I COME
the 18-55mm is a pretty good all round lens.
Same prob... Kindly let me know if u got any solution
Only one question. Is it possible to autofocus in video mode?
tommy f. yes it is, but i would say that this is not something the d5200 excels at. the lens can be quite noisy when focussing, which would affect your sound recording and it isn't terribly smooth visually. manual focus would be a better option, though that in difficult to get right.
thats what ruining all my vlogs
What microphone are you using in this video? OR what external microphone would you recommend for the Nikon D5200 for taking youtube videos?

I dont know why, but my camera saves video in .MOV format, how do I change my settings so that my camera saves the video on my SD card in .mp4 format?
But I have an almost-stupid question (bear with me; I'm new to all this!). Should I be using the standard lens that comes with the camera (after adjusting all the movie settings of course)? I went and bought a 50mm 1.8 focus lens for portrait shots. Can I use that? Thanks!
+Melissa Aflalo you can use any lens, they will have the same properties and differences as when you shoot photos with them. high aperture (such as using the lens at 1.8) becomes something to be more aware of when filming as you may need a greater depth of field due to moving elements
I order the AF-P lens, much better for video since it is silent while auto focussing and it also focuses faster.
@@aelorgames2627 can the AF-P lens be used with Nikon 5200?
Hey! Great tutorial. What is the recording bit rate in 1080 and is it 4:0:0 ?
+Sheila House Hi, I am not sure to be honest, but if found this on imaging - resource dotcom 'The Nikon D5200 saves its video files in the MOV format, using MPEG-4 encoding, with two choices of bit rates. The HD formats can be recorded in a High quality level of 24 Mbps or a Normal quality level of 12 Mbps. The SD resolution video also has two bit rate options of 8 and 5 Mbps.' Hope that helps!
NTSC is used in north, center and southamerica as well.
thanks for the video I suscribed.
Hello,
Great video!
Thanks in advance,
Eric
Hi Eric, this isn't a problem that I have come across. We use FCP without any trouble. Are you shooting p or interlaced? we found that interlaced can sometimes produce blocking.

no, i think the maximum for a single continuous shot is twenty minutes. Obviously you can shoot more than one depending on the capacity of your memiry card.
This camera has a fisheye options ?? and how many minutes maxymalnie can record video 20 minutes ??
+Mateusz Slawinski no it doesn't have a fisheye option, sorry. On full res, it will record for 20 minutes.
+Nikon D5200 Channel but is there a limit recording or example, you can record as much as a place of memory.
+Mateusz Slawinski you can record as much as you want, but only 20 minutes at a time. how much you record in total is dependent on the size of your memory card
Hi Nabeel,
The D5200 can only record upto 20 minutes at highest quality
29 minutes 59 seconds at normal quality, you will have to split your video at a suitable point and join them in post production.
How take the picture while I do the video is possible?? can you do a video please!!
if i am in india ,which mode should i choose ? pal or ntsc?
India uses PAL
I press the record button and it doesn't do anything. Pleaseeee help!!
are you in liveview when you press the button? it will only record if you can see through the back screen
Getting this camera today so stoked
no, the external Mic automtically overides the internal.
Can this camera be hooked up to a video switcher using HDMI to work in conjunction with two or three more Nikon D5200s for a multi-cam video shoot? Not recording to memory cards, but sending the video direct to the switcher and recording the shoot on a laptop?
The camera can be hooked upto a hdmi recorder so in theory it could be as it would send the signal through the hdmi but not confident on it..
can d5200 take both video and film/movies? what are settings difference please?
yes the D5200 can shoot videos. there is really no difference, but if you want to shoot something to show on a large screen then you should set the camera to 1920 x 1080 and have a 25fps frame rate.
Hello, so I just got the D5500 and recorded my first video of myself, watching it back I realized that it always had to refocus on me as I moved, and it wasn't like I was walking, I was just moving my head while talking and it still did that, how do I change that so the autofocus focuses on everything on the screen?
Shem Goltz yes, the best thing to do, is set the focus by putting something where you will be, and then with the lens to manual, so that the focus doesn't continually change..
in which mode i have to set for video manual, aperture, or shutter speed mode?
I work in manual mode. It is easier for me to change the shutter speed and aperture, though the shutter speed is the most important, i think - you need to keep it at roughly twice the frame rate.
It's a very useful video. Thanks for sharing. I have faced a problem while shooting. Brightness of video changes as things moved. Kindly refer me to a video about white balance. Thank you
if i am filming a youtube video in a quiet indoor place and i have just my camera (no other voice recorder or microphone) do i still but it on 12?
yes, set it so that the peak sound hits 12. for example, i usually have it in 8-9 setting, so that when the speaker raises their voice little, it peaks at 12. it is always good to test the sound first if you can..
can you make a video with these settings so we can see how it looks
Yes, the Nikon D5200 produces MOV files in video
I was just wondering what file does the Nikon d5200 shoot on? MOV?
reminds me of James May discussing DSLR cameras.
Hahaha yes!!

I shot video yesterday and saw that it was very choppy and there was a lot of pauses. What did I do wrong? was it the shutter speed, the aperture or something else?
Gari Harvey difficult to say, but it could be the shutter speed ratio. generally speaking the shutter speed should be twice the film speed, so if it is 30 frames per second, the shutter speed should be 1/60. try it on auto for everything as a test and see if it is better...
why my nikon d5200 don have the same frame sizes options like your d5200?
Can we use this camera for make marriage movies
I use this camera for all my videos and it is pretty good. But I must stay that this is a stills camera that shoots video. You might want to look at a proper video camera if you are going to shoot weddings professionally.
I would stick to PAL. Although they are changing it to DVBT, most Tvs will still run on PAL. in actual fact, if you convert your videos to mp4s it doesn't make a huge amount of difference, and remember that many videos are watched on computers these days....
Amazing video thank you so much!!

Which is the correct frame size for TH-cam!?
+Heyitsshreya Hi, it is best to use HD. depending on your equipment, either 1080 or 720. always use P if you can rather than interlaced. I prefer to use 720 at 50 frames per second. TH-cam will offer your video at different settings anyway, according to the viewer's download speed, but it is better to have a larger file than a smaller one..
Hi could you please tell me how to use digital zoom when you're shooting videos. Is it possible at all? I mean when the camera is rolling and the shot needs a slow close up. Using a zoom lens always results in a loss of focus.

+Kishore yadav hello, have you been in to the set up menu, video mode, to set up either PAL or NTSC. you will only get 1920 x 1080 60i with the NTSC setting. the d5200 shoots 16x9 aspect ratio

I hope you are having fun with it. If you have any questions, just ask....
