What should I do ... I've been growing my beard out for awhile and only recently realized that I have been trimming too high on the neckline. Is it too late to try and correct or should I trim it all back to help it catch up?
I'm certainly guilty of missing my neckline and I will embarrassingly look back at my older videos and see it. Totally agree with your points and you nailed it. Thanks Carlos!
i am growing my first beard out, so i found this information very informative, before i make any crutial mistakes and butcher the process as the barber shops are closed for beard grooming in my local area due to covid.
If you do go to a barber be VERY specific! My barber butchered my 5 month beard. I said a needed a slight trim (about a half inch) and tidy up the neckline. He then gave me a chinstrap 😂
As always Mr. Costa, appreciate You taking time out to make video's here. I recently started trimming My Dad's Beard and Your vids have help Me keep Him looking sharp as a whistle. Plus My Mom, She thank's He more handsome with His business Beard. Thank You Sir. You are appreciated greatly and I always look forward to Your vids here. Sending prayers Your way for You and Your Family. Take care, and greetings from Texas! Sincerely, The Zepeda Family
Thanks for the tips! I always do sharp lines so I'll follow the back of my side burns and wrap around the corner of my jawline instead for a more natural look.
Another great video! I’ve grown my first beard ever at 39 and thanks to this video and the many other’s before it, I feel pretty good about my current neck line and overall shape.
Nice simple explanation and nails it. It took me alot mistakes on the neckline to figure this out. Exactly how I follow mine. Also very important not to come too high up on the side jaw line. Been there, done that. Anyway, great video
Was never quite happy with how my jawline came out so I looked up this video. Great video. I'll give it a few days to grow out and reshape it. Thanks 👍
I would say though that if you're growing a longer beard and it's long enough to go below the Adam's apple, don't try to shave above Adam's apple, just find where your beard stops on your neck and shave everything below. That's a mistake I was doing, trying to shave "behind" my beard to get above Adam's apple, and in the end I was just losing volume and fullness (that neck hair becomes part of your beard!) and doing that made my beard look weird from the side. I don't have a lot of hair growing below the Adam's apple, but I'm at a point now where I just don't shave my neck anymore
In my opinion when the beard is slightly below your jawline it makes your jawline look more prominent, look at the beard that are on or below the jawline, they put more focus on the jawline making the jawline seen stronger and the face more defined. When you lower the beard neckline slightly above the Adam's apple how I have it, it reduces focus from jawline and makes your face look rounder.
Thank you for the tips. I’m 29 and have never learned how to properly amplify my jawline. I look like a different person without this scraggly hair hanging down my neck
Incredibly helpful , made me realise I've been cutting mine too high. I've just started to let it grow out again but my neck line is definitely high, should I just let it grow out for a month longer Before shaping again?
Should you ever fade your neckline? I had my first ever beard trim after 5 months of growing out my first beard. The barber cut in a line, but then faded it. It was an expensive barber too as this was my first proper trim and I wanted it to look great.
In the past, messing up my jawline made me go for the nuclear option of shaving off my beard completely and starting again. Now though I'd be more relaxed about a mistake (within reason) and just allow it to grow back.
I screwed my beard up the last time I did a trim and went way to high! I was trying to go for a short beard and tipped my head back when I cut the bottom. Now I am trying to let it grow back in and it looks funky.
Oh man, I think we've all been there a time or two. It's one of those beautiful struggles in the journey. Now you have a good story to tell and a good learning experience to grow from. Keep us posted on the trim once things grow back in. 🤠 -Sly
I had to let me neck grow out for a few weeks recently. I had a full square beard but I felt it covered too much of my neck and shorted my neck. I felt my head was sitting on my shoulders in pictures. I followed it like he did but it just didn't look right. Jaw symmetry can be different on either side. I learned my neck looked great on the left side but my right never looked good. It's hard to explain but it was way off by following my jawline. I even left it a bit lower than my jawline and started just above my Adams apple. I went back to what works. I look up and cut straight across with a shaping tool slightly going up. Best way for me to make it all look even, even if I feel I have no neck. I'm over the very awkward uneven hump. I just trimmed my beard to a 3 attachment, it's all one length with my new neck growth and now I just let it grow to a 6 attachment. Again, I don't think following your jaw is a good way if you plan to grow a thicker beard. You need all that under growth. I also take the shaping tool and use it by my ears. I don't cut straight down with it. I follow how my hair grows so that my line go back a bit past my earlobes. From my earlobe to that corner where my beard meets is 2 inches at least. Maybe that's too low but I just learned too low is better than too high.
exactly from my left my beard looks so good but from the right I look fat, my beard comes up to where the chin ends like above the Adams apple like 1 inch idk how up to go to line it
Dear sir i am a little less length of my first time beard just about yours in this video now, have darker hair and significant neck growth that i dont want, so i want to clean it but i wil lets say go for sure twice the lenght you rock in this video, can i make neck line now and lower it later or will it look awkward later when lowering... basicaly should i wait for desired lenght and trim then?
Love it man! I smoke cigars too! Im growing a viking look and its my first beard too so im pretty unsure of how it should be done? Do you have some advice for this style? I see nobody doing it anywhere so i am quite happy to be a bit different. Barry from South Africa.
Gr8 advice been struggling for years now to find the perfect neck line ruined alot of beard that i had to trim it all and im guilty of making that sharp lines that ends up looking like a triangle indeed gonna try this out..also the line in front of the ears dont know exactly how far it should be in front of the ear..some time i get it right som times i dont
Unless i have it short i don't need to worry about it as my neck hair doesn't go down below my adams apple especially at the sides but it means i dont have much weight at the sides when i grow it out longer, its about 4 inches at the minute.
some guys « create » a jawline using the shape of their beard...simply because they don’t HAVE a jawline. the guy you gave as an exemple with the « triangles » it’s obvious he got it shaped that way to define his face because he is a bit « shubby » and that’s understandable. you can’t shape your beard to follow your jawline if you don’t have one to begin with, because of your bodyfat (or genetics)
Just let it all grow for about a month and use a guard to make it all even length. Then I’d say make a base line about 2 fingers above adams apple. Then follow the shape of your jawline about a inch or so below the jaw
All the tips Carlos saying, I learning in this channel and the bearbrand channel too. Now my neckline it is the way how Carlos mentioned, keep shape around jaw, now always I keep the neckline in this way.
Carlos Costa I love the videos you posted since beginning in bearbrand channel, the first time I see you in videos, I absorbed all the tips do you tell to us.

Thanks for saying you shouldn't come straight down off the sideburn. Doesn't look natural to me either, however I see it all the time and was beginning to think I was blowing it.
*Neck lines are everything!* _But nobody talks about the actual lines or folds on many gents' necks..._ I find that the first line from the top should be covered by hair or else it looks weird when you look down. Also, from the side, I like the beard to look like it has a right angle.

Congrats on making it to the five-week point in the journey, my friend. I'd recommend setting a goal to grow for at least twelve weeks. Of course, we've got all the education and tools to help keep you feeling awesome in the process. 😎 -Sly
Beardbrand Alliance thanks for the reply, I set my goal at 2 months. When I get there I don’t suppose another month will kill me, the wife might tho lol. I’ll do my best 😎
I am only three weeks in to growing my beard out, and I have already made a mistake with my neck line which I am not happy with. Would you recommend starting over, or just letting it grow out?
I can grow a good full beard on my left side. My I’m struggling with my right side. Like the top of cheek that’s where it’s not completely full, so when it’s long I need to trim shorter than what I want.
I always mess my neck line up but I am very overweight and j going to change that. I've already lost some weight but the point is I never think that my neck line is good because I have a lot a fat in my face and neck so is really hard to get a good notion of my jaw and neck. For me lining up the neckline is one of the hardest most fucking headache because you don't want to go too high up.

Good info
I've always trimmed my neck line at my jaw. My beard is about 1.25 inches long. Any suggestions on how to grow my neckline out so it looks good?
Just let it all grow for about a month and use a guard to make it all even length. Then I’d say make a base line about 2 fingers above adams apple. Then follow the shape of your jawline about a inch or so below the jaw
1 finger above your Adams apple
I struggle a bit with my neckline. If I do it "properly", midt lower near my adams apple looks weird to me. Too Oval, drops way too much down.
