- In this vlog I will be giving you a tutorial on how I propagate my peach trees. There are many propagation methods this is just one that has worked for me. It also helps me recycle my plastic since I don’t have recycle service out my way. Hope you enjoy it and it’s helpful in your propagating journey.

just as effective: a piece of towel paper from kitchen with some moss covered soil wrapped around wound with aluminium foil covered. and thats it. 3 days it settles. and 3 weeks it starts growing. and 3 months nice product. done it a trillion times. it works.

If you grafted one cutting per second, 24 hrs a day, then you must've started about 31,000 yrs ago.
You did the math. Would also have a lot of peaches.

I have a great suggestion for you u
Pour some dried dirt in the bottle after you make your holes. Fill it halfway. Now lay it horizontal. And slide it over your branch . Now using a funnel now fill with water and you can ad rooting hormones to the water or rub it on the cambium that you exposed , before covering the branch. Also make sure the cambium is covered with a-lot of the dirt once you turn it vertical . Them zip tie to another branch for support Twine if zip ties too short. Enjoyed your idea !

Great idea to teach folks something they dont kow how to do, but i just put soil in first and just push it over the branch. Its real neat to see a tree grow that you had a hand in....
HOLY CRAP WHATS NEXT? That will be a method I show later on and yes it is neat and satisfying knowing you can turn one tree into two.
Made it little cumbersome. A side cut from lower hole to bottle cap would have made it easier to fill the bottle with soil. A foil wrap and a zip tie over the bottle could take care of the cut, sun light and rain water.
That is a great re-purpose of those bottles. I never seen this before so it was interesting to watch.

Hi Nathan, that is a brilliant way of re-using plastic bottles, and it looks fairly easy too. I dont grow peaches myself, dont see why it wouldnt work on other fruit trees though so I might give it a go at some point. Great video, thank you.
Petals on the Paving Slabs yes it works on multiple types of trees though typically used on those trees that are more difficult to root as cuttings. Thanks for stopping by.

I am using your method next. My trees are in bloom. I am placing the water bottles on the new growth after scraping the outside off. No real bark on the new cuttings.

Great simplistic well thought out video. I'm here in Indiana on some land. I'm focused on sustainability and homesteading. I've been involved in aspects of components of the life for a lot of years. I'm now culminating the knowledge and executing. I have some new plum, peach, apricot trees I'd like to propagate using cloning. A lot of my trees are on root stocks primarily to offer size traits or cold hardiness I believe. None of that I particularly care about outside of climate related issues. They claim I'm in zone 6A but literally everywhere around this one swirl in Indiana is in 5A or 5B...... I've long thought zone 5 and the powers that be are messing with me. I'd like to know or see the time frame on rooting, removal and subsequent planting of that peach clone. I subscribed and hope to see the before mentioned and more from you. I've noticed a lot of videos show things that work in theory and seem successful but rarely do I see updates or coverage of those things shown and followed on a time frame. Makes me question how much and successful some things shown are in producing viable things long term. Good luck and great video how too and showing little tricks that only people who do these things know.
John Coale II thank you for watching though I didn’t get to film any of the results from this propagation I plan to do so in progression next go around. This tree is on its last leg do to some water damage and I wanted to get as many propagations done on it as I could to carry it on. But typically I leave the bottles on for 8-10 weeks to form a good root ball that will do well when transplanted into a container and then ultimately into the ground. I do my propagating as soon as the nights no longer freeze which is early for me down here in south east Texas.

I take it your air layering/ propagation didn’t work as we didnt see an update as promised. I’m about to air layer a peach tree so I hope it works. I know I need to use rooting compound or honey to stimulate growth. Only moist not “soaking wet” moss or filler will do. Needs to be sealed top and bottom so it won’t dry out. The condensation will keep it moist enough over the months. I appreciate your video and wish you success out on your ranch. 😃 yay Texas! I’m a born and raised Texan myself living in East Texas.

This is great, when do you cut it? And where do you cut it?
Another way is take a freezer bag, fill it with moist dirt, seal the opening, split it down the middle, set the limb in the middle, wrap it around with duct tape.

If you seal it in a plastic layer and then some aluminum foil, do you need to water it anymore?
What time of year did you do this and what zone are you in?
when you bore that hole try using a wood bit with an auger tip should go right in save a little time if you this alot

Why didn't you fill the bottle with dirt prior to placing it on the branch? Also why didn't you use root hormone? How long before rooting takes place? Do you need to add water weekly.? Regards Phillipe

Interesting. I didn't know that was a technique to use. Might have to try that on one of my plum trees. Would it work on an aged tree or do they have to be less than 5?
Jules Gardening it should work fine you just want to do it on new growth. Right now last years growth will do if you do it in the summer you would want to use new growth from the spring.
I have seen people use an almost sterile field doing this. Is there much risk of disease doing it your way.

I use dirt that I know what’s in it, mostly I use compost that I make from home. Little to no risk on my end

I cut two 6ft TOPS off of my Peach Tree today. I scraped the bark and exposed the fibers. I poured Clonex on them. I then stuck them both in a 5gal bucket with half a gallon of good water. Will they root in the water bucket method???
They should but it will take awhile make sure and pull off most leaves if not all.

tried to root my peach tree cuttings in water. I cut them off the tree. Three weeks they are surviving, but not rooting yet. This is an interesting approach to keep the cutting attached and then root it.
hasn't worked for me yet. Most of my cuttings have been submerged in 1" of water with bark exposed, but they seem to be dying.

With this method no water is added once it’s sealed up. Takes about 4-6 weeks to root and you will see the root ball forming

the problem i have is my best peach tree starts blooming 1st week in feb i will take some cuttings in jan see if i have any better luck ihav about 10 trees 2-5 yrs old
Great information, man! I wonder, why not just slit the initial bottle and stuff the dirt or moss in that way? That is one less step.
Splitting the bottle and filling is easier but I find more moisture escapes that way. Then I end up wrapping it in cellophane or something of that nature.

What I do is make a slit like you did and fill it with dirt and wrap it on the tree and than wrap it with tape
That works just as well. There are many techniques to accomplish the same results. Thank you for sharing.

Does a peach tree have to be grafted to some sort of root stock or will you get a good tasting peach just from this new start? So once this roots, you just plant it? Thanks for the video. I want to give this a try!
The new start will determine the taste of the peach. Root stock is just to give it a better start. Yes once it roots plant it and let it grow.

Can i use this method on any fruit tree?
How about doing what you did by cutting the top and bottom hole, but also slicing the side on the same bottle, then fill the same bottle with dirt. Mark where you want to slide the bottle down with the zip tie, and slide the bottle down on the exposed cambium that's already filled with dirt? Just tape the side shut...

It takes about 4-6 weeks for a good root ball then remove bottle and cut it about 2” below the roots and pot up or plant directly into soil
Great video KBL! Air layering is supposed to be a great way to propagate many trees. I have been wanting to do it with many of mine. I have many peach trees and figs I want tor try it on. So glad to see you have success with it!

Yes wonts it has a good root ball cut it about 2 inches below the roots and pot it up or plant in directly into the ground

Yes, once it has roots, cut it below the root ball and plant it. I usually pot them for a season then plant them in the grown the next

Yes that’s what I do just so I can make sure they stay healthy but they can go into the ground immediately

I don’t believe so, typically they retain their traits from the mother tree.
Is there a best time of year to do this? I see there are no leafs on the tree he is working on.
Kevin Anderson I typically do it right at the beginning of spring. This is when the tree is putting on the most growth and has the most energy. There is plenty of time before it starts fruiting. Also it not super hot yet and the moisture holds better keeping the rioting damp and doesn’t put so much strain on the branch.

Hi i have 2 sticks that i cut off trree when i was out of town i put in aloe and water now about 3 wks its still alive but no roots growing or fresh leaves so how to propagate in water
I have never tried in just water but I will have to give it a try

Thanks for the video. I would suggest a hot poker vs drill bit. It will be faster and you wont runa bit in your hand(been there)
im just guessing but it looks like you could fill the bottle with soil before you place it on the limb just slide it down the limb should push throw easy enough then wet and seal it save a few steps

Frank Davidson I was not able to get a video of it for I was pressed for time but I did work. I was 50/50 on it I did 12 and 6 of them rooted. Though I did do 2 bottles on 1 branch and those didn’t take. I noticed that it did better on 2+ yr old growth. None of my first year growth took.

Roots form in a couple of weeks. Wait 6 to 8 weeks to get strong roots for potting.
has any one tried this same method fo pecan trees will it work i rooted a muscadine vine by buring a lon vine in the dirt with some bark removed
Frank Davidson I have not attempted this on a pecan tree yet but plan to. I usually just grow them from seed but it’s a long wait for production.

Frank Davidson I usually do it early spring just after the leafs appear and before the fruits. If any flowers start to form on that branch I just pinch them off so all the energy is going toward forming roots.

No watering required but if things look dry add water, 4 to 8 weeks for roots depending on your climate. Should be able to see a good root ball through clear plastic.

Could you recommend sth more eco friendly, rather than plastic bottles? They re a terrible thing! Try a charcoal stick to filter your tap water, you can get it at a health food store, much better for the environment... We all have to make a little change! Still very nice moustache! :) And what s next, how long do you have to wait till the roots are big enough to plant out? Do you have a video on that? Thanks again
