Gotta add my two cents about the cross-body bag - as a guy nearly 60, I know I have to watch where I take my fashion. However, I find the cross body bag, in a reasonable size, to be a great alternative to packing my pockets with wallet, cell phone, keys, and now face mask. In my cross-body bag I can also squeeze in a small, folded up reusable bag which is required in my state since we don't allow plastic shopping bags. I can also get in my work ID, and transit pass, so I don't ever forget them at home. I find the cross-body bag to be subtle and super practical.

Downsize, brother. Go with a "Ridge"-style wallet, for starters. Keys and cellular in your pocket. No need for the modern day "fanny pack". Unless you wanna look like grandpa. Then have at it!

Agree with the comments about cross body bags' practicality. It might be the fact that in the US there not as common as in Europe where you see them in men a lot. Granted, they are slimmer in comparison, more like a purse but more rectangular into square. Many of them very stylish in my opinion.

My cross-body bag is behind me. It is very small and great while riding my e-bike. There is only a very thin strap going diagonally across my body. I find them to be very comfortable.

I started wearing a bag more than a year ago. Strap across my body. the bag on my hip. I wear a NutSac bag. It looks like a small (11in.) canvas/leather computer bag. I carry my wallet, phone, note book, pens, keys, a small hairbrush, and a small flashlight. Best part about a bag, no more crap in my pockets. so my cloths look better.

On the serious note, I hate the lump of wallets or my phone in my pants pockets. I use a cross body bag in summer, made in grey (as my hair) canvas. The practicality of it is big when you go on the beach by bicycle as I do. You store all your items in one place, on you body. When you put it away or put it on you, the money (never a wallet) in one pocket, keys in another and off you go. As for the other six items goes you are right, in my opinion.

I am presently looking for a good cross body/sling bag. I walk using forearm crutches so a man purse or soft briefcase are not secure enough and also get in the way of my sticks. I'm using a backpack right now but anytime I need something from my bag I have to remove my sticks, remove the pack, juggle my sticks and the pack and whatever it is that I'm getting out....you get the idea. I like a cross body bag for essential items such as my inhalers, lip balm, eye drops , allergy meds, glasses, phone charger pack ,hand sanitizer, gum, extra mask small note pad and pen. All things I need for a day out and about. Things I can’t carry in my pants pockets , they don’t slip off my shoulder, they don’t take up much space on my body, they don’t need to be removed to to sit. It holds a few things in a small space. I see it as a solution more than a trend.

Hi John another great video thanks for sharing. On the question of fanny packs as you would call them, in scotland we call them bum bags and I frequently use a black leather one from time to time and generally wear it across my chest, the reason being, I have type1 diabetes and I’m required to carry insulin, needles together with my sensor meter reader. I would agree I do take a bit of a ribbing from some of my friends but for me it’s an essential piece of kit. The morale of this post being the next time you see someone with a “fanny pack” they may be carrying life saving kit 👍

Imo, high rise trousers are far more attractive than low rise. They help to hide a belly whilst low rise trousers make a round stomach even more obvious. Also, they help make your legs look longer, which I would argue is an advantageous look. To each his own but I love high rise and think it should be the standard for the average guy, particularly older men (as their physique is usually not as shapely as it used to be)

This is a tough one. Go check out the AER product line for the AER day sling 2. They have "slings" that John is talking about when he says crossbody. I agree with John that this is a great EDC carrying tool...for the Millennials. I carried an AER sling for a couple of weeks and to be honest I think I embarrassed myself in the process. I too don't like cramming my pants pockets with keys, wallet and iPhone...let alone chapstick, Leatherman, Field Notes, pen. Thus the practicality of a sling. However I think it's still for the young crowd. I gave my AER sling to my 26 year old son and he loves it. I now have to re-double my efforts to find an EDC carrying format that works for me and checks off all the boxes. John thanks for bringing this up on this video.

Cross body bags allow me to conceal carry. Also with the size of phones I hate the rectangle lines in my pants.

sling wallet (not actually a sling bag) yeah... those look horrible but since i wore these, i never lost my wallet but whenever I got a chance, I put them in my bag if I need to look better. slowly transitioning from the tactical look (cargo shorts/pants) to a more fashionable one like you have been demonstrating.

I have to agree with you on all these trends. They need to go away especially the high waisted trouser. Not everything that you see on the fashion runways need to be seen on the street. Have a great long weekend.

High waits pants looks good for men with bellies
And also it so old back in days
You can't say it is a trend...it's more a style that fits many men for years

Hi John, there's been an athleisure trend since last year. I think it would be awesome if you can do an episode about athleisure for men 40-over. I live an active lifestyle, play sports & workout regularly, and I think the number of 40-over gym rats, runners & recreational athletes is growing fast. Thanks. Stay safe & healthy.

I’m thinking of vacationing in the Philippines some time. Cross body back would help protect me from pick pockets!

I wear a crossbody bag on my back every time I leave the house. I have to carry 2 cellphones, a wallet, a small notepad & pen for work, a USB drive, a microfiber cloth, chapstick, sunglasses, pills, sanitizer, keys, and a knife. However, when getting down for quick stops, I only carry my wallet, personal phone, and keys. It is a lot better than carrying a big backpack to have all of my EDC items on hand.

"Joe College with a touch of arthritis" -- Humphrey Bogard in, 'Sabrina'. As a general rule; if you're old enough to remember the last time a trend was fashion, you're too old to wear it now or again . . .
