To me this shows us that your family is being as responsible with your assets as possible. While you may not make as much with the extra labor involved, you are getting everything you can out of each log. To me, you should be commended. Nice job group❤❤❤
Most of what you throw away is more than enough for most of my projects!!! I see this with most of the videos I watch. Wish I lived closer to a log yard so I could go through their garbage piles!!
Emerald has demonstrated in other videos that virtually none of the log is thrown away after milling, including the sawdust. They operate under a sustainability and no waste model.
in the woodworking magazines,I see ads for "project packs" of S2S lumber of varying types, the mills selling off usable odds and ends. At my local Woodcraft store,I always go thru the scrap bins for useful small pieces of hardwood, they sell it by the pound. Half the time,I don't even know what type of wood i'm buying, just that I like the color and size.
All my slabs go into my campfire pit, as I'm just a hobbyist sawyer at this point. I just finished moving my LT40 to a new bench I built. It has a small lower road running parallel to the mill above. My new system will be to slide the slabs directly off the mill down into the bed of my pickup. Then when I'm done milling for the day, I will back my truck up to my campfire wood pile and lop the slabs up, sliding them out as I cut. The goal is for me to handle the slabs as little as possible.
I’ve been watching your channel for about a year now. I really enjoy y’all’s zero waste policy. I see so many other folks waste so much wood. I wish more people would use as much of the tree as they could.
Who is the new guy? Great shots of the processor !!! Looking warm & beautiful ladies nice thumbnail and change of music. Hope Thanksgiving was a great one.
I worked in a sawmill, the logs got debarked and sold for mulch. The slabs were chipped and sold to papermills and all the sawdust was blow in to trailers and sold to the papermills too . They only thing lost was the squeal noise from the saw !
Waste not want not. I'm 65 and I remember my grandma using that phrase 55 years ago, she was about 70 at the time, that theory has proven to be correct over the years. I know of a lumber company not far from me that was careless, abused and didn't maintain their machines, as in no or very little maintenance, twice a year they would burn a "scrap pile" of wood with a huge bon fire in the spring and beginning of winter. They started out with nice machinery, some of their trucks had been township dump trucks and were part of scheduled replacement, not because of breaking down. They repaint them green and never get washed or probably maintained again. Anywho, they closed. I saw a low boy picking up"repoing" the beat up newer machinery and the rest is sitting there to rot. You all are taking all the right measures to prevent that 😊. Have a good weekend!
You are a stud, Emerald, and Jade's starting to kick-ass too. I was hoping that you both hug your dad and every person that means something to you. Don't need to see the process, but please give your dad lots of grandchildren. If your mom's there, for her too ; but mostly for the two of you. I do not mean this to seem ribald, as I think rather highly of your family and the work ethic. Simply, the World needs more of your spirit. Stay warm, and love-up your dogs !
As a woodcarver and a home owner with a wood stove, I fully appreciate the , "Waste not, want not" mindset...In my world, 'scrap' pallets are either kindling, caving wood or birdhouses yet to be built;...Love your channel
Thanks for the video ladies. And yes i had a great Thanksgiving. Smoked a turkey but it was hard to keep lit. lol. But really it was tasty, hope yours was fabulous too. TTFN
A friend heated with wood. He bought slab wood from the Miss down the road. Raw slabs not cut up but they did deliver. Dropped it in his driveway and he then had some work to do. Cheap firewood if. You’re willing to cut it up.
Honestly, I can't call such thick wood pieces "waste". I would probably carry them with difficulty even with both hands 🙂. Putting these pieces to using - is a good strategy. Nice to see working people despite the cold weather. (Hi from Belarus. Harry Davidson).
Emarald you have a smile in yourself it's quite beautiful to see. More than usual, not just spouting off about that. Anyway Godbless & Thanks for the video.
Thanks, yes we did have a great Thanksgiving. For years there was a sawmill just down the road from us. While my mom was living she would take my old truck and load it up with full length slabs. Then on the weekend I would saw them to size for her wood stove. That's the great thing about wood, even if ya just pile it up in the forest and let it rot, it doesn't go to waste. Nature reclaims all the energy contained in it, even the bark. Thanks for the video. 🙂
I get lots of Douglas fir slabs from my neighbor who installs hardwood floors. Sometimes his customers will have flooring milled from their own trees, and there are lots of slabs left over. If the slabs are stacked nice I like how easy it is just to cut through the whole stack with a chainsaw. Customers love the firewood from slabs, fir one thing they stack really tight in a truck so its a good deal for them. Cedar slabs are easily had and those are great for turning into kindling...
don't know if you will see this comment but slab wood works awesome for bundles or bags it's a good filler because of the flat side for wrapping machine round side for bags great thing is it works for any bundle.😊
Since your process involves cutting to length, I suppose you must charge for it, but in Michigan, mills move it by (landscape) trailer load. The customer cuts it themselves
Would like to order 100 bucks worth of merch: Leftovers from your Turkey Day chow down. I don't need to ask - judging from past videos, I know those eats would be delish. Need it delivered (of course) UPS Same Day (I'm gettin' hungry).
some of those thicker slabs, seems like a hobby woodworker could get some usable boards from. Maybe not commercially salable for you folks, but for us cheapskates, they would work for small projects or glue-ups.
Wonder if there is anyone like myself that works dog shift, days are nights vice-versa that didn't do anything other than catch Z's on Turkey day. But yeah I smoked beef fajitas lamb breast, stake all last night & Sautèe snap beans & made shape cheddar mashed potatoes with homemade brown gravy meals for the week nothing out of the norm. I was wondering about that *(Chain)* does the boss or Grand Dad wax it every 4 weeks? Bc I heard it's good to do bicycle chains not sure it is the same or good to do. Boil chain then dip in wax for 20 minutes. Not sure how much differents it would make. This Co should take on some inturn journeymen to do that kind of practice to always have maintenance done the bars, mill saws, gear ⚙️ chains, engine maintenance. Before our company took when we worked for heavy equipment jobs we flip the cab overs maintenance the trucks & equipment + I do extra so my equipment didn't fail like other workers back ups did. In my few companies that is our standards for rookies. Peace in the middle east
If the slabs would stay straight, it would help! Getting all tangled up sure makes a mess trying to get into the Bells. I wonder if there is a way to get them to feed in better. Would 6 inch tall spikes on the feed chain force the slabs onto the conveyor chain better?
I wonder if some company might use these off cuts to make trim or dowels or biscuits. The small ends for firewood and large ends used for any woodworking tools like push bars and even wooden clamps. Well done ladies thank you.👍♥️♥️
Commercial pellet machines cost a lot of money. More over they don't have enough sawdust to keep it busy. Their investment money is best used for a new LT70 WIDE and support equipment.

Slabwood is also good firewood, although many mills give it away, or charge a minimal price for it
Possibly you could set-up the edger to spin the slabs so that they would be done when cut to firewood lenghth, saving much handling.

My brother used to heat exclusively burning hardwood slabs , he had to cut them to length they came full length from the mill.
