    Follow me on an epic flight over the beautiful Irish countryside outside Cork in a Diamond DA42 aircraft from Atlantic Flight Training Academy.
    I will show you around the Cork area including some famous tourist spots and I will also show you how an approach to stall and recovery exercise looks.

    It's interesting to perceive how uncomfortable and counterintuitive was to Mentour let the plane enter in stall. After years of training the concept seems to be written in stone to an airliner pilot. Great video Mentour!

    The aircraft itself and the institutional knowledge base required to safely fly it are both marvelous feats of engineering. Watching Petter take instruction and more importantly balance the task loading between operating the aircraft, communicating with the ground and the FO/Instructor and actioning his instructions was really impressive. One of the best Mentour Pilot videos I've seen yet!

    Just a wee bit of mass missing behind you...

    • @julienbey1082
      @julienbey1082 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The controls of Diamond aircrafts are really sensitive. Cessnas are completely the opposite. Like Boeing aircrafts most likely I guess. So it is not caused by the mass 😊

    • @StringerNews1
      @StringerNews1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@julienbey1082 Sorry to disagree with you, but there's this thing called the moment of inertia. No matter how "sensitive" the controls are, you cannot make a great mass change direction as quickly as a small mass. You could apply the same fallacious reasoning to attribute nimble handling in a sports car entirely to its rack and pinion steering, but the fact is that a 1000 kg car will be able to turn in faster than a 100,000 kg truck because of the difference in mass, regardless of the steering gear used. This is physics 101.

    • @julienbey1082
      @julienbey1082 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@StringerNews1 I see your point and you are right in a certain way. Nonetheless all aircrafts are built in a different way. The
      DA42 has a T-Tail, so the elevator is not as much affected as a normal Tail. So it also depends on the airflow, which hits on the elevator or not. So in some aircrafts you have to use more power to create the same lift. And as I fly a DA20 and C152, I know that every aircraft is handled in a different way, even though the weight difference between these 2 is 30kg. So the moment of inertia doesn't explain that phenomena in that way.
      Other example, C152 and DA62 - the DA62 is a lot heavier but the control inputs are much more sensitive.

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @AlbertoNencioni Ah, but Veyron would be that much faster if it was lighter! That said, I'm not sure that "sporty" is the right word, unless the sport in question is outright, straight-line speed records.
      Actually, while it's very fast in a straight line, it's also rather heavy and _very_ stable at speed - which is the opposite of what "sporty" usually is. For better handing, faster cornering, more nimble rotation of the vehicle...you want less stability, not more (within limits, of course.) :-)

    That DA42 sure is a pretty-looking airplane! There was one on the apron at my local airport (KAUW) while most of the Women's Air Race Classic crews came through. It was piloted by one of the air race officials. Most of the aircrews who had time and had never been near one went over to drool upon it...along with the local pilots!

    @Mentour Pilot. Aileron in the stall at 5:50. Naughty boy! The down aileron increases the angle of attack on the upgoing wing and can cause that wing to drop and begin a spin. Always rudder to keep the wings level in a stall. I recognize that you have far more experience than I do but these are things that we pilots tend to get out of the habit of as we progress out of light GA aircraft. ...just a friendly reminder and word of advice from one pilot to another. We're all in this together! Great video, though. Thanks for sharing.

    Petter, I’m sure that you truly missed your normal larger cockpit. You didn’t even break a sweat in the planned stall. Watching this video gives passengers a reassurance that pilots can recover from a stall or better yet, “steal” an aircraft when they feel like it. 👌

    I think it should be mandatory for all airline pilots to do an hour in small plane, every 5 years or so, to remember the basics of flying. it should cover effects of controls, stalls, and unusual attitudes.

      Annually.. Should be part of the flight review. Sully was a glider pilot and that skill probably saved him.

      While I agree that it’s beneficial to do some GA flying every now and again, airline pilots do everything you mentioned every 6 months during our simulator sessions- we shoot raw data one engine approaches with max crosswind, upset recovery, stall recovery etc. It is a common misconception that airline pilots dont know how to fly manually.

    Great video, I take it you flew hands on all the time. You can get a bit too used to the luxury of the automatic systems. Seems like you still have it though and what a great day to go flying. The perfect weather.

    I like riding commercial; but I LOVE flying prop. I don't get to my destination as quickly, but I don't care. It truly is all about the journey. There is no better seat/view than left seat in a small prop plane. You actually see the world, not just the topside of clouds.

    I learned that no matter your license rating or how big the airplane you fly, every time you transition to a unfamiliar machine you have to be humble and you have to listen thoroughly what your instructor says about THAT specific airplane. It’s true if you transition from the Piper Cub to the 747 or from a 777 down to the C-150.
