      CAUTION: prescription meds can show positive on drug screen. Plan before hand about meds you take. I did not know meds I took would show up on drug test. It delays employment for a month due to time frame of proving you are taking meds legally. We spent s lot to get from Texas. It was shocking for me. So plan for this if you apply ask for an early drug screen if you take medications of any kind. You never know? If I had known I could have been prepared early by confirming with my doctor. It was a hurtful experience.

    For anyone coming from further south and planning to stay into the early winter, make sure you have a block heater on your gas vehicle engine and if your rig runs diesel, make sure you have winter blend fuel in the tank before it gets cold.

    Started at Digi-key in April this year, at first we worked a straight 40 hrs/wk until we were trained and then the overtime op kicked in. As of today we are able to work an extra 28 hrs a week overtime. This isn't always available but for the last few weeks it has been. One note, working that many hours can tax both the body and mind, so really work whats good for you and try to sustain yourself. I will be here till the end of November for sure but winter in these parts is the real deal and I am wanting some more moderate climes. Nice thing is that there has been an opportunity to return after being gone, so maybe next summer too.

      @genekied 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@OutonaLimbwithKym The day shift gets some cafeteria style food, not great. Then the other shifts have some grab and go option, some good but expensive ($7 sandwiches) and salad or frozen store type entrees. I mostly pack my own food but occassionally will eat a sandwich. Lots of vending drinks and snacks too, again pretty expensive.

    • @edwardliddy
      @edwardliddy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      can you list some key pros and cons?

    • @zachparade2791
      @zachparade2791 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Sure!
      Pros: good pay, free lodging, overall really nice co-workers that are happy to help new employees, low stress, free exercise (I get around 8k steps a day), there is a great airport here that can get you to the twin cities for around $80, this town has some good city parks, river runs through town which is good for kayaking or ice fishing in the winter, it’s a small town but there is a Walmart and other useful stores, and there is a pretty big town (about 60k population), Grand Forks, less than an hour away that has every other shopping need covered including a really great health food store and an amazing Indian restaurant that gets me down there about once a week 😂. I think my favorite thing - and the thing that surprised me most- is working in such an inter-generational team; I’ve literally worked with people that are 18 and others that are 80 - and everywhere in between. For me, that brings a really interesting aspect to the little conversations you have with people throughout the day.
      Cons: Typical Midwest weather: we had several -30 degree windchill days in the winter, and we have already been over 100 this summer. We work around a lot of folks, so the people that I’ve seen struggle have low people skills or simply don’t like being around other people much. The work, for most people, doesn’t feel very meaningful since you are just filling orders. A sense of meaning is important to me in a job, so I learned everything quickly so that I could become a training buddy to help new employees, which adds a sense of meaning since I’m helping others.
      Of course, pros and cons are very subjective. So what I find a pro , others might find as a con. If you have a specific question, feel free to ask . If I know the answer, I will reply. ✌️

    I drove truck for potato harvest for fourteen years (RDO). One year I went over and drove for sugar beets for one week. I couldn't believe how much easier and low-stress it was compared to potatoes. Twelve hour shifts that were actually twelve hours. Not like potatoes where it could run on into the night so you get there at 6 a.m. leave at midnight, then have to be back again at 6 a.m. It was exhausting. Beets was like taking a vacation for me, and I had a concussion and partially collapsed lung at the time (from potato harvest-My truck fell in a sink hole, lol). Beets definitely paid better, too.

On the nights we do migration we are told to go back to picking orders and doing put away after migration. It’s not hard work but it is a lot of work. I have watched a few of your videos today and I have some questions for you.
    1. When you mention "class" of camper, what does that mean?
    2. I am a disabled Vietnam Veteran and I also use the Veteran's Administration for most of my medical needs. If I choose to "hit the road" as I have been tempted to do in the past and have enjoyed every moment of the adventures I have experienced, is there any quick and simple way to stay in touch with my VA medical demands as I move from one state to another? I recently moved from Alabama back to Florida and it was no big deal, but I did have to find a VA facility close to my location and get re-registered back into the Florida system.
    3. I have my dog as my constant companion, as I noticed you had a dog also, is there any restrictions to keeping your "companion" with you or any added charges for having the responsibility of living with a pet? I am "anal" about keeping my outdoor environment clean of dog droppings and repurpose as many of those pesky plastic bags which almost everyone uses nowadays to package up one's purchases in any store to accommodate my dog's daily "needs".
    Thanks for some really helpful videos and for taking time to answer any of my questions on becoming more of a "Nomad" than I have been for most of my life!

      Some are, but please make sure your pet doesn’t have separation anxiety. If they do, it’s a misery for everyone else, especially those who sleep during the day.

    I am in Colorado and need work immediately and have no home. Please don't feel I am trying to move forward and better my life. I have only a backpack no kids, no pets, just a great smile and attitude.

    There is a phone interview and online test. I don't think it's a given that digikey hires just anyone. I am finishing up at Amazon Camperforce in Campbellsville, KY and scheduled for digikey in March.

    Hey Bob, you should do a video on the ND oilfields. There's a lot opportunities to make 100k or more, depending on how much you want to work. I spent 12 years out there. The winters are brutal, but the pay makes up for it. Great opportunity to get ahead in life!

    There are also or used to be summer fish cannery jobs in Alaska and I believe they provide housing. Not sure how labor intensive the job is for elderly. Just a thought. May be remote areas you have to fly in.
