Good stuff. When I was in Special Forces we did a lot of training in the snow. One time in Norway my team dug two 6-man snow caves and we lived in those for a couple days. It actually got quite warm inside those snow caves and it was good to be out of the blizzard too. We traveled everywhere on skis and pulled a sled or a pulk with our heavy gear. This video reminded me of that time in my army career some 30 years ago. Thanks for sharing.

So great to hear from you Mike. You guys were the real deal. I would have loved to be part of your team and experienced some of that. One of my favorite individuals is Colonel Norman Vaughn. He traveled with Admiral Richard Byrd in the South Pole expedition of 1928-1930, and wrote the book "With Byrd At The Bottom Of The World". I met and talked with him before he passed away a few years ago at the age of 100. He autographed his book for me too. You might enjoy that read. Peace.

@@ThisIsMyAlaska With your mastery of carpentry and all around skill sets, plus your love of the outdoors, you would have been a great Special Forces Engineer on an A-Team. Thanks for the tip on the book, I just put it in my cart on Amazon for my next order. I'm currently living and working in South Korea. A couple of my old army buddies take regular trips up to Alaska now to fish each year. As soon as I come back home for good I plan to take a trip up there with them. Love watching your stuff on TH-cam! You and the family stay safe!

I am a native Texan. Lived my whole life in Texas. Nearly all of my adult life, I’m 70 years old, has been spent on the Texas Gulf Coast. Hot and humid. Just the way I like it! The wife an andI have toured the entire US and nearly all of Canada by motorcycle. We rode up to Alaska in 2017. But only as far north as Fairbanks. Some of the most beautiful country in the world up there. Purely amazing. We will go back some time. While I have no use what so very for cold weather I love watching videos of people that do. Good morning my friends. The quietness of the mountains at night, coupled with the solitude is almost overwhelming. A few months ago I spent the night alone inside a glacier near here, in a huge ice cave. The. cave was hundreds of feet deep (although I only went back about 200 feet or so). Being in there alone at night, so far from any other people, was surreal. It was one of my favorite trips. I am so grateful that there are still places in this planet where experiences like this are possible. Peace

Good morning Gerald. Thank you for being here. I want to wish both you and your wife a wonderful week. It is such an honor to me to read your words and know that you are enjoying the content I am creating. I am in Kodiak Island this week. Kodiak is very important to many Alaskans because it is the home of St. Herman, who lived here from 1808 to 1818. Every year at this time hundreds travel, from all over the world, to visit his hermitage, which is very beautiful and unchanged in over 200 years. The town of Kodiak is a fishing community and the harbor is full of fisherman working on their boats and equipment, coming and going through the narrows to the sea. I have been walking down there and visiting with them in the evenings. I will share some of this trip with you in a couple of weeks. I hope you enjoy this unique part of Alaska as much as I have. Peace to you.

Temps here last night dropped to about +41F. Along with 3 coats, I pulled on my dad's 60yr old wool overcoat (about 10lbs in weight), sheepskin boots and hat, lol. I do love the tropics, but the arctic seems to draw me in with wonder always.

In the tropical countries like the Philippines, you can go to the mountains for days in a row and the forest will fed you. Cool spring water to quinch your thirst. Edible wild fruits, root crops and protien-rich wild boars for your sustainance. You can build a fire by rubbing each other 2 bamboo slats.
But in your case my friend is whole different story. Your ingenuity... wow... awesome.
Love and kisses from the Philippines ❤️🇵🇭.

I would enjoy seeing your beautiful mountain country. That would be so interesting. In the mountains here, in the winter, natural food sources would be more difficult to find certainly. There is plenty of excellent water and wild game, but being prepared is really important. I enjoy it immensely. Peace

Pretty cool to see something like this. I live in a part of alaska where there are no trees an most people who are lost dont make it. Ive lost many family members to the weather. Many are just traveling from village to village and get turned around. I myself have gotten lost so many times but luckily ive had my gps with me. I know being prepared is always the key but most days we tend to not prepare for a 3 to 20 mile trip. Its like for you urban folks most car accidents happen near home. Its the same thing for us out here. Its flat with no land marks. But ive also heard of people surviving several weeks in winter with only a lighter and a gun. Somy hats off to you.

Good morning Jacob. Thank you for reaching out my friend. I have spent many years working in remote areas of Alaska and know what you say is true and accurate. I have known too many people in the Koyukon region who have lost their lives in similar situations. The coastal regions that you describe are are even more challenging due to lack of clear landmarks in bad weather. Keep that GPS with you my friend. It is a lifesaver. I would enjoy hearing more from you. Peace

I have done solo Winter camping in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. It takes a very certain state of mind to do it and a real focus with every move you make. You cannot afford a single mistake that will leave you injured or without heat, food, shelter or proper clothing. It looks idyllic but solo Winter camping is not a trivial undertaking. Good job with this video and his preparation and skills.

.....A nice hot meal, and basic comforts at the end of a long cold, hard day reminds a man how little it takes to actually be appreciative and thankful for those moments..... I have spent time outdoors my whole life, but I must say that I would definitely be hesitant to be out there without some basic protection from predators and hungry wildlife.... I’m sure you had that covered seeing that you had everything else squared away 👍..... more people should do this... It will help you find out who you really are...I would love to do this with my dog, but I’m a little older now, and I don’t think he would venture too far away from the treat cabinet, the couch, or his mama that caters to his every moan and grunt haha.... actually he’s not that bad... but I’m serious about the couch 😬

Good afternoon my friend. So good to hear from you. I have many friends involved in gold mining and love the gold mining history of the early 1900’s. I have read so many great books of that era. Google “Coal Creek, Alaska” and read about the early mining history there. My wife’s father was the superintendent of that mine before he passed away. I hope to do a video of that mine one day soon. Peace

Coal Creek sounds familiar to me, I have to check at home, if I already have a book, where this is part of, I bet I have. That would be cool, if you could make a video about it! I was gold prospecting on hobby level several times in the Fortymile mining district in Chicken. If you are interested, you find videos on my channel. Some friends, I met in Chicken, also were prospecting in the Brooks Range, but I never was yet. I would love just to see the Brooks Range one day. And I'm gold prospecting in Switzerland for more than 15 years now, we also have nice gold. Hope to be able to make it to Alaska again next year. Have a great day, and take care, my friend!

But the truth of it is, the airline charged very little for round trip flights, but then charged $100 for your checked bag. So, most people take a carry on, and also carry the Winter cloths over their arm.
