Absolutely brilliant video. I am a low handicap golfer, but have always struggled with chipping. Watched this and realised that I was killing my game around the greens with the hands forward and downward strike you mention. Have put these changes into play the last few rounds and cannot believe the difference. Worth 2 or 3 shots a round to me this! Now my chipping may finally match the rest of my game and help my mission to reach scratch! Thanks a lot and keep up the great work!
@@USGOLFTVshow Question though. Can you just keep the clubface square and still get effective forgiveness from the bounce on chips? Or do you suggest opening the face to expose more bounce?
Michael Ricciardelli keeping the face square works well. Our suggestion is to open the face up slightly at address and keep it the same throughout the motion...
Watch the Lee Trevino video about chipping , he talks about the handle (butt) of the club should always be ahead of the club at impact, not saying this lesson is wrong just watch his video..He talks about drinking a case of Coors light when winning a tournament. Thats the wright video.
Todd, thank you for a most enlightening lesson. I have always played the ball way back in my stance with the club leaning forward, and now I know why my wedge has the loft of a 4 iron! I tried your advice on all my iron shots yesterday, not just chips, and got an immediate improvement in loft and direction. I hit a 9 iron from 115 out that actually went straight up in the air and landed 8' from the pin, then in for a birdie. What a game-changer!! Thanks again!
This is the best chipping instruction I have ever had. All of the mistakes I made were related to those 3 mistakes that person after person has given me. I didn’t even have a chance to practice this technique before I played the next day. I used all three instruction points during that game and never missed a chip. Everything went up onto the green. I thought I would never figure out chipping. It was killing my game. I feel so great since I learned to chip I want to play all of the tip and feel confident that I will never chip again and see the ball got 2 feet in front of me! Thank you so much!!!
DeMary Julie wow....you made our day!! What a great post! Thank you for taking the time to post your experience...hope you subscribed...more good info to come. 👍
DeMary Julie absolutely. The same thing happened to me. Only new rule I liked was elimination of the double hit penalty. Things suck when a rule change saves you strokes. Ha ha
Great teaching, one observation all teachers forget on chipping is to make a wide arc, back and through the ball. Yes neutral shaft and bounce, but if you pick it up, that’s a soggy chip or knife coming
I wished I had seen this video 20 years ago when I started taking golf seriously. LOL, I would have won a few more bets against my buddies, unless of course they saw this too. Thank you for this super informative tutorial. Todd you're a genius instructor and great ambassador to the game. Subscribed. Thanks, Hansel
You are the first person here on youtube to describe chipping this way. This is exactly how I chip, I've tried the other way leaning way forward, shaft forward, hitting down, it is way more inconsistent. The way you explained it is the way to do it.
I have been a trainer in other fields, not golf. I have always had a saying which is: "Training that does no produce a change is about as good as a parachute that works on the 2nd bounce. For me, a regular joe amateur golfer, this is the best chip shot guidance I have ever seen/heard. I watched the video, went out in the back yard and practiced the methods and techniques taught. I have played twice since then and both times reduced my score by about 8 to 10 strokes. Without question, my shots around the green were more controlled, more accurate, and closer to the cup than in the past. I know it is likely I will still chunk from time-to-time. But, I truly believe this skill set will remain overall a game changer for me. Thank you so much for making golf more fun for me & of course, lower scores. Best Regards.
Charles, wow you made our day!! As a fellow trainer your kind word regarding our information and hope to help our fellow golfers means a lot. Thank you for watching and posting! 👊
I agree 100%. I've been studying the golf swing my entire teen & adult life, 20+ years and this is the best instruction on this topic that I've ever come acrossed. The way explains bounce and delofting is brilliant. I know a lot of the tips that come from tour Players, too often approach the subject as if their audience has the luxury of practicing and hitting hundreds of shots a day. So they often teach the hands forward/delofting method. He's the first instructor I've seen explaine how that gives less room for error, and how and why 99% of us should use bounce and loft to our advantage! It's succinct and simple, yet brilliant!
That short chip shot you said to move your hands back as you take the clubhead back ... is actually like a putting stroke , and works well for me . 👍 longer pitch shot are no different as long as you use the bounce , and follow through at the target. It's simple, easy to repeat and effective 👌
Todd you are a deadset legend. Thank you for the best video on demystifying chipping. Your video has changed my short game where duffs and bladed shots close to the green have virtually been abolished. Yes I was making all three mistakes. Thank you again.
Great tips, tried them out this evening and got so much better results now I'm no longer doing the things I'd previously been taught. I'd always played the ball back in stance in an effort to hit down on the ball. For the first time I can remember, I wasn't afraid of having to chip, usually I'd be putting wherever possible, even through rough!
Allan Patrick - 67 year old retired surgeon Canada - Good video Todd. This ties in with the tempo issue I am working on, holding the body at transition while the club falls inside and weight shift occurs.
Without a doubt this is an excellent tutorial on chipping. The explanations behind each comment are outstanding. I'm sure this will positively improve my game. It's hard to believe I never challenged the "old school" mentality about chipping. Well done indeed! I'm saving this one for sure!
Thank you for this! The "down on the ball" instruction is so clear to me now on what not to do. I have been doing this and with and your explanation made it very clear. Thanks again!
Excellent lesson. Golf club heads are made for a reason - to put the ball in the air at specific angles. Delofting a wedge is counter-productive and self-defeating. Let the golf club head do its job!
As a noob with no instruction past a bit of help at the driving range I've figured a lot out on my own. I managed to sort out a good stance, ball placement and club motion. Never knew about bounce so that's good to learn. I'm glad I watched this so if anybody tells me otherwise I can ignore the bad advice. Now time to work on the driving aspect!
Another well deserved thank-you! I have struggled with chipping for years, and had been progressively placing the ball back further in my stance. I had even switched to using my 56 degree wedge a couple of years ago to unconciously compensate for that ball placement. Oh my, what a difference following your advice. I'm back to using my 52 degree wedge for chipping, stopped chunking it, major improvement in accuracy, regained my confidence, and just had my best round in years. This teaching video has been a game changer for me - and the proof is in the results.
Joey Lee wow! This made our day...fantastic...we do our best to provide good solid information that can help our fellow golfers, appreciate your kind words. Do us a favor if you would and subscribe and tell a friend...more great content to come. 👊
if you have problems with your game or if you're new, or even if you're not new and looking to improve your golf game and listen to this man because he knows what he's talking about ... excellent!!!
Yep This works !!!! I've been doing this already and in effect it is a movement using the shoulders in a fixed pendulum motion. The shoulders rather than the hands ( most people I see get too handsy) that are making the shot in a single plane and it's more accurate in every way. It's the same as when I putt I use the shoulders and never break the hands there, this results in a secure pendulum , my feet are always in line with the hips and no more.
I've been playing quite a bit more these past two years and I truly appreciate what you've done for my game. I can travel with my clubs on vacation and feel like I can play most anywhere. It won't be great, but I'll meet people and enjoy myself while being outside. Thanks for what you do Todd, you've made a positive difference in my golf game. Take care!!
@@ryanh222I hope you're being Sarcastic. But just in case you aren't...I will guarantee that if you take 100 avg mid handicappers that struggle at chipping, and show 50 of them the Phil Mickelson tips, and the other 50, the tips from this video, then have them apply it, I'll bet my home and my favorite Driver & Putter, that the 50 that apply the tips from this video, will be better off than the PM 50.
@@joegvoll6017 not being sarcastic, if you willingly are denouncing Phil Mickelson's short game credibility. I don't see any point in engaging in an argument with you. Good luck with those flop shots bud! 👋
Todd, your lessons are the best I have seen. You make understanding this complex game that much easier! I am going to get out hopefully today and work on these techniques and also the techniques you taught in the hitting a draw lesson so I can stop slicing so much!
Quarantine practice time - get out the chipper... The shaft lean and loft are great tips for sure - but the thought of sliding the butt end of the club has changed the arch of my swing... couldn't get the right bounce if I "pin" the butt-end to my stomach and lift the club... it needs to slide away a bit... Brilliant. Thanks!!!!
Yes don't deloft by hitting down on ball but be mindful of the lie as you must hit under the ball . Avoid thinning it !! A bare lie is difficult . A soft wet lie will not give you club bounce !
Thanks for the tips, excited to try this out after work. I've been having an issue where I was having bad ball positioning (bad advice from friends) and bad loft/club angle.
Spot on with your instruction, I've been playing for 62 years and have tried and used various chipping techniques. From high lobs to low runners, and it all comes back to one thing, LET THE CLUB DO THE WORK IT WAS DESIGNED FOR. Don't try to get cute with a shot, because it will come back and bite you right on the ass. lol
I believe there is a significant difference between chipping and pitching. The best chipping key I've found in my 55 yrs of golfing is to get the ball rolling on the green as soon as possible. If edge of green is 1/3 the total distance to the hole 8 iron, if edge of green is 1/2 of the way to hole W, and if edge of green is 2/3 of the way to hole Gap/SW.
Great video, I have been afflicted with all 3 of those chipping diseases as well as pulling the club head to far to the inside. This really sorted me back out and now a lot more confident to hit these shots with a variety of wedges around the green. Now using these simple tips as checkpoints in my pre-shot setup routine. Feel like it will definitely help reduce my handicap this season so thanks a million!!!
I have been playing golf for 35 years to a fairly good handicap but chipping has cost me more strokes than I can count. Thanks to this well explained and logical approach that is about to change. How do I know? Just been trying it out. It works. Thanks for these great tips..
speakeezie.....great news! We hope the info has improved your game and enjoyment on the course...thanks for watching and stay tuned for more great videos coming this summer.
Totally agree with everything you are teaching. I have also improved by using this and Paul Runyans technique of basically using a putting grip and stroke and keeping the ball as low as possible running up to the hole. I now use 4 and 5 irons to chip a lot around the greens with a putting stroke and improved my consistency and scores accordingly. Thanks
37 years as a golf pro and now a scratch amateur - that was the first time I've ever seen a good chipping video-I am out on the practice ground later. I love the theme of taking the butt end away from the target on the move away-Thank you !!
Thank you Todd. I just played a round of golf where I gave up probably 10-12 strokes due to stinky chipping- doing all the things you just instructed us golfers not to do(i.e. "handle forward; delofting the club! negating the "bounce", etc.! SO FRUSTRATING!) Now, I can't wait to get out on the course next week and put this lesson into place in my game. Thanks again!

Wow! I am a casual golfer that struggles with chipping. I always thought that I just needed practice to hone this shot but don't golf enough to do that. The comment about, "If you make those 3 mistakes", and I had all those habits, that you are, "Going to need a lot of practice," really resonated with me. I can't wait to square everything back up, take those mistakes out of my game and try the motion tip out! I can get around the green or on the green in regulation. However I almost always walk away with a bogey, or double bogey, chasing the ball all over the place. Well done!
Jan Dragotta wow...powerful post! Thank you. We do our best to help our fellow golfers. Let us know how it goes and be sure to subscribe...more good content to come. 👍
I find that the thought of moving the handle really helps as it assists me in making better contact with the ball and not 'flipping' at with my hands. If I move the club head first, I have a habit of using my wrists and hands too much resulting in inconsistent ball contact. Great explanation of the chipping process.
Summer, hard ground and grass short to none. in other word link territory. I believe here bounce is your enemy. I have tried your technique and doesn't work. Now good lie, enough grass and not hard ground. your technique work wonderfully. Thank for you video.
Pepe, your comment about the type of turf is a good one. Different turf conditions will make bounce your enemy or your friend depending on the situation. The knowledge to understand how we as golfers can change the loft and bounce of the club is vital in these situations. Thanks for watching and the comment. Hope the info helps!
Got to disagree there. Hard to middling ground is just when you can use the bounce but obviously one has to hit the turf a fraction before the ball with the descending stroke. Wet or soggy conditions are trickier because the club head doesn't bounce. It digs into the turf. In those conditions a different technique may be necessary!
Holy crap TODD! I went and played today and took some of your advice on chipping after watching this video ! I kid you not I chipped for 20 yards out and actually sunk it ! I was sooooo pumped up ! I was doing all the bad mistakes hahhaa now my chipping was phenomenal today!!! Thank you sir I have subscribed and addicted to the channel!!!
EXCELLENT. I've suffered with chips around the greens. Since last season have practice all topics discussed in these video and it's such a difference in accuracy and stokes around the greens. Thanks guys. Go Golf.
Been a bogey golfer only because of good chipping. I’ve been doing what you instruct for years and it works, but I’ve never been able to explain it. Your explanation is perfect.
Your BIG TIP about the butt end club movement is exactly what I needed! Amazing! I had already been taught the big 3 mistakes. But nobody ever told me about the BIG TIP. So I still struggled with consistent ball strikes in my chipping game. The BIG TIP produced immediate results. I could scarcely believe that it was me making those chips from close tight lies to long rough lies. Awesome! Thank you so much!

Thanks for this video. I do have one question. I thought I heard you say regarding ball position to keep the ball in the middle of your stance - sternum. You also added that the ball could be slightly in front and then another time you said the ball could be slightly in back of center. If I heard this correctly, would you please clarify this ? Thanks, Jim
Jim San Marco you bet, the ball position can change slightly based on the shot you want to hit and the lie, generally we like to see it in the center of the stance with the feet slightly open. Great question! 👊
@@USGOLFTVshow Phil Mickelson says to position the ball either off your front foot for more height or back foot to keep ball lower, never in the middle of your feet. He says weight forward and hands forward too when chipping.
alan butler thanks for watching and posting. We have full respect for Phil, he is one of the all time greats, hands down. Our only request is to give our ideas a try and see for yourself. 👍
I knew all this but fell into the folly of exactly what you stated that is commonly taught. Used to be excellent chipper and struggled like an idiot for two years until this week. Did get this method on another video and yours totally parallels the instruction. Looking forward to recoup my confidence. After two years of total destruction I realize it will take a bit of time. Thanks. Fantastically worded instruction.
I coach high school golf and deal with very raw beginners quite a bit. Even my seasoned golfers struggle with the short game at times. This is the best chipping instruction I've seen. I'm stealing it :-)
Succinct Brilliance!!! 99.9% of Golfers could benefit from the instruction in this video! I fell into the "hit down on the ball" mistake with my irons and wedges for over 15 years! and it's a problem for a lot of us that were either incorrectly taught, or misunderstood the concept because of the flawed wording. The "Descending, down and thru" is a game changing concept. As I said, my game was hampered and my improvement stunted because of that one error in the way I approached every swing of my irons and wedges! Thanks for the Great Tips!
I've struggled with chipping for too long , came across this video & I was like yeah I have been doing all the mistakes he pointed out , so practiced the way he instructs & played so much better in my last golf comp - in fact won my division , my problem was shanking chip shots & i'm very pleased to say not once did I shank one by following his tips
Todd, I really enjoyed your chipping video. The mistake that I see a lot of my amateur friends make is stopping their hands, creating a situation where the club head passes the hands and causes the leading edge of the club to hit the ball instead of the face of the club. A bladed chip is one of the reasons a lot of amateurs forward press their wedges. They haven't learned the skill of having their hands lead, or arrive at, the ball, at the same time as the club head. Once they understand your fundamentals they're going to need to spend time practicing before they will be able to grasp the proper technique.
Just watched a video on chipping by Phil Mickelson, probably one of the greatest chippers ever. He says to ONLY play the ball off your back foot or front foot based on what you want the ball to do. He says NEVER put the ball in the middle of your stance. So I am officially confused.
I did the same saw Phils -tried it but wasn't working-maybe if your Phil this works--but kind of think this is way to go --the way it was sort of working for me--will go back to this tonite
Keep stance centered, you still can move the ball by moving the stance back and forward . Also can take that Stance center to a full-Swing in Golf to. Check Ben Hogan Stance for check point. Sorry I like the Lesson
Thank you! I can not wait to try this. My short game is horrible and I was taught all of those mistakes. "Put the ball to the back, shaft forward, and hit down on it!" I am so excited to try this out tomorrow.
Very confusing to first watch Phil Mickelson video on chipping explaining hands forward and ball to back foot. Then see your video ... I guess practice what works on the course. No substitute really for repetition and adjustment.
Michael H good post...there have been many references to Phil’s hinge and hold style on the thread and no doubt Phil is one of the all time greats! Our only request is give our ideas a shot and see for yourself what happens...you may be surprised. Be sure to let us know how it goes. Thanks for posting! 👊
So most amateurs use a lot of hands,so most teachers teach hands forward to take the hands out ,if you watch your video you know your on hands are ahead of the ball at contact so yes this is confusing to most players
Dana Adams furthermore, Phil’s instruction allows to control your club by using aggressive descending blow. This will help you control your distance plus consistent solid contact. When you using forward press, it will free your swing from staking into the ground. Most importantly, you will have to position your ball front, so that your swing will pass through ball instead of hitting it fat...
Phil also always opens the clubface on wedges, (not addressed in this video but I'm sure there are some lessons on that. Can't teach everything in one video). With hands slightly forward, if you open the face you introduce both bounce and loft back into the shot.
Great video.....for PITCH shots. ZERO chips are shown in this video. A "chip" does not go above your shoulders and fly 70% or more to the hole. Again, I'm not knocking the technique, just the terminology.
Chris McVay fair point. The terms can be confusing at times. The key is creating a slight downward strike with some loft on the face. That’s the winning combination. 👍
@@USGOLFTVshow vor 2 Monaten: "Chris McVay fair point. The terms can be confusing at times." There is absolutely NO CONFUSION at all - the teacher has got his terminology wrong - that's all! Chirs is absolutely right - the video and instruction are great, the tips are correct. And precisely because the game is difficult and very confusing at times, dear coach, please use the CORRECT terminology - a pitch shot is typically done with a pitching wedge, hence the name pitch, a chip is very close to the ground - hence "chip and run".
Hands down best UK instruction I've ever seen. I was doing all the mistakes as had been taught this was the correct wart years ago. Have spent time in the garden using your tips and it is a revelation!!! Playing today and looking forward to putting into practice on the course
Great lesson - all points I was doing wrong to start with. Of late I have taken these tips and the chipping around the green has improved 1000%...cannot argue with that kind of success.
Shawna Gunn There are lots of ways to do it...give our advice a chance and see what happens....let us know how it goes! Thanks for watching and taking time to comment...
Chipping is a short shot that does not use the bounce . Pitching which Todd is talking about in this video is a short shot that does use the bounce .this video should be called pitching
I'm glad you could confirm my own findings. I hit a lot of balls in a day, many areas of the bag too. Realizing that I use less but shorten my stance, causes smooth hits, and allowing me to really feel how much I need to put in... its trusting oneself. I think that is where most people lose themselves in anger, because they don't try a bunch of different ways. Especially ones that feel natural.
I am going to try this my next time at the course. I have made all the mistakes. I play a chip and run with a 7 iron because I am so bad with my wedges. They sit in my bag gathering dust - I rarely take them out because of it. Thanks for the tip.
Fantastic. I'm 44 took up golf a month ago and these tips are gold dust. Got 50 on the back 9 today. That's a milestone for me! Saved the most shots by chipping better than before. 😊

I just took chipping lessons from a LPGA teaching professional. She told me to do exactly what your three mistakes are. So I'm going to try your way!!! 20 years ago on the very fist time I ever played golf, I hit the ground so hard, I tore the cartilage off my rib cage. Didn't touch a club for 20 years! Finally decided to try again 2 years ago. So the hitting down on the ball is difficult for me to do. I really like the term descending. I think that will help me a lot. Great video!

I’m a sucker for golf instruction videos. I must have watched dozens over the years but this is the clearest, most helpful yet. Todd, I am a die hard Fan of yours. 80 Years old from Kolkata, India. What you are saying in effect in this video is to make a small Loop in the swing on the Downswing ? Take it up, then lowers the Club thru a small loop while coming down & thru .
a little long sorry, and this coming from me who too often makes things longer but the explanation to help understand was VERY HELPFUL. it reinforces your teaching and allows people who aren't good enough at chipping to stick to your method even if they are not successful right away instead of the videos where someone simply says... don't do x instead do y. without a full explanation why. your video was very informative and helpful. keep up the GREAT TEACHING
Saw this video 2 weeks ago. It addressed what I was doing wrong for years. Just say my problems, with chipping, are fixed. Played a few rounds with these changes and here some results. My ball seems to roll out more and not die out. The ball got off the club smoother. Felt like a baby swing, rather than a stab at the ball. Saved more pars,, in fact, I had two chip-ins. Fellow golfers, this chipping tip will shave strokes off your score.
Brian Menn wow this is just awesome! Nothing better then hearing these stories and helping our fellow golfers. Made our day! Thanks for posting...thanks for watching...and thanks for following us! More good content coming.
WHAT you say makes perfect sense. But Phil mickelson has a chipping video that challenges your lesson. And he is probably one of the best chippers we know.
I wonder what the expression on my face revealed the moment I listened to your "get the butt moving" tip......It was a burst of "Aha" for me! Past experience came to mind at that instant. I thought back to last year's chips. Sometimes they were good, most times they were not. I realized why. I had accidently moved the butt and didn't know why I hit a good chip. Now I can practice making it more permanent. Thanks for your simplicity and clarity.
So, I stumbled upon this video in May 2020. Went to the range and heeded the advice and had a good chipping practice. So simple, and saw immediate improvement in my striking the ball. Thumbs up!

Great teaching, one observation all teachers forget on chipping is to make a wide arc, back and through the ball. Yes neutral shaft and bounce, but if you pick it up, that’s a soggy chip or knife coming

If at first you don't succeed parachute jumping is probably not for you!

Check out Phil Mikelson chipping 101 and he would dispute your 3 mistakes as his 3 must do’s

Great point!

Great stuff Paul!! Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

Brilliant. Thanks!!!!
The best chipping lesson for me, thank you.

Your right
Yes don't deloft by hitting down on ball but be mindful of the lie as you must hit under the ball .
Don't try to get cute with a shot, because it will come back and bite you right on the ass. lol
belknapdlg26 bingo! Let the club do the work is great advice. 👍

Thanks

Well done!

In those conditions a different technique may be necessary!
for links courses would it then be better to use wedges that have natural low bounce and then follow your technique?

The "Descending, down and thru" is a game changing concept. ravvers00 this is awesome!! 👊👊 Made our day!! Thanks for posting
Patrick Mertz the key phrase there is getting the hands and the clubhead to arrive to the ball at the same time...good post! 👊
Phil Michelson Chipping 101 preaches just the opposite.
Jerry Korth you read my mind...
I tried both „versions“ and no doubt why but Pils 101 method works 9 out of 10 for me - regardless if ball infront of left or right foot.
Thomas Kihr I’m sticking to what works....and that’s sticking with Phil !!!!
Keep stance centered, you still can move the ball by moving the
stance back and forward . Also can take that Stance center to a
full-Swing in Golf to. Check Ben
Hogan Stance for check point.

@@USGOLFTVshow
vor 2 Monaten: "Chris McVay fair point.

Chipping is a short shot that does not use the bounce . Pitching which Todd is talking about in this video is a short shot that does use the bounce .this video should be called pitching
That's exactly what I was thinking. I find it odd that a person giving golf advice doesn't know the difference between a pitch shot and a chip

I’m a sucker for golf instruction videos. I must have watched dozens over the years but this is the clearest, most helpful yet. I thought I understood bounce and loft but having listened to a great teacher go through the chipping process step by step, I quickly realised that I didn’t understand these absolutely crucial elements of the chip shot at all. Guess what: you can teach an old dog new tricks! Many thanks.

Best instruction ever. Decoded all the previous confusing and daunting words and demonstrations.
Wow!! Thank you for the kind words...which tip did you find the most helpful?
Easily the best and most sensible chipping video I have ever seen
Todd, your video is the best I've ever watched and I've watched more than a few. Chipping is the weakest part of my game and I've been making the mistakes you've pointed out. I'm definitely changing my approach to chipping. I really appreciate your instructions.....and you have a great personality for a golf instructor.
Rich...you are too kind! Thank you for watching and the comments....we do our best to provide good solid information that will help our fellow golfers...we do not have all the answers...but we do have a few LOL...hope you subscribed!
During Coronavirus lock down in Cape Town SA, I have been practising my chipping in the garden, with patchy results. It has awful recently on the golf course. Noticed this video and it has got my chipping sorted out. I know exactly what to focus on now. It is so easy. Many thanks!
Neil Stokes awesome! This is exactly what we are hoping for 👊 More great content to come, be sure to subscribe
Fair Dinkum mate. Thank you, after 20 years I can finally understand what I should be doing. Out to practice now
About time somebody makes sense of this.Playing for over 50 years and always couldn't chip worth a darn.
Can't wait to give it a try in the spring..Thanks
Don Boucher this will help! Still time to have a great short game...thanks for watching and posting!
Rob D thanks for the great post and feedback! Appreciate you watching...hope that information helps your game. 👊
Thumbs up!
