Judy Garland was a friend and colleague of mine, and I was a regular performer with Judy Garland's TV show. I know good singing AND performing. This IS both. What a marvelous, for all time, performance.
He knew how to command attention as an actor. However from what I have learned apparently Yul Brynner was also difficult to work with and developed a habit of having strings of affairs with female fans.
@@victoriabardsley8097 The story goes that he had a hot and heavy affair with his original Anna, Gertrude Lawrence, who was old enough to be his mother.
The second Broadway show I ever saw (the first was "Annie") was this production in 1978 after it had been running for several months. I was only nine years old but the power of Brynner's performance was quite evident and the program already told me how much he had been associated with the role for decades so I knew I was watching a legend. So glad there's finally some visual record of the production (after the demise of the Ed Sullivan Show in 1971, it's harder to find the TV outlets where Broadway musicals were featured other than the Tony Award show).
I did not know that there was a recording of the great Constance Towers and Brynner in this scene. Thank you! This is one for the theatre archives, for sure!
Thank yu everso much for posting this clip. Young people today would not have ever seen these two remarkable actors at the zenith of their talents. Tbank yu!!
As much as I like Constance Towers, I have to respectfully disagree. Deborah Kerr will always be the ultimate Mrs. Anna, especially in this particular scene. There was this intimate spark between her and Yul Brynner that was beautifully subtle, but unmistakable. That being said, Constance Towers has a lovely singing voice whereas Miss Kerr was dubbed by the amazing Marnie Nixon.
I completely agree, and I honestly think she should’ve been the one chosen to do the movie. I love Deborah Kerr, but it makes no sense to me to put in the extra effort to dub an actress if their voice isn’t up to par for the songs. It should have been someone who was the full package like Mrs Towers.
Msu@@Olivia_G88Maureen O Hara who was cast because she was an excellent singer but Rodgers didnt want a Pirate Queen as his Anna and The studio didnt want Patrícia Morison who played the role with Brynner on stage because she wasnt a big star although she was also an excellent singer
I wish I could find "My Lord and Master" and "We Kiss in a Shadow" sung by June Angela, who had the voice of an angel. So far this is the only number I have found from that production (which I had the great good fortune of seeing in person).
If Yul Brynner had been a guest star on the Muppet Show on September 10 1977, Miss Piggy and Yul would have performed this number perfectly and properly as the grand finale.
Patrícia Morison played Anna with Brynner on Broadway affer Gertrude Laurence death in 1952 and if you see their performance i rhe 1971 tv performance you will see their chemistry together I love Constance Towers too.But I dont think that Deborah Kerr was better than Towers and Morison. Maureen O Hara was first cast for the role in the movie because she was an excellent singer and wouldnt have been dubbed as Deborah Kerr was. Towers played Anna with Brynner in.1977 because there were billing problems with Julie Andrews .Later Angela Lansbury played Anna in Brynner and Towers vacância with Michael Karmoyan só Brynner didnt play the role with her
It seems ungrateful to complain of any aspect of such a legendary theatrical moment, but the music is stretched out almost to the breaking point. No doubt effective, but there is a loss in spontaneity.
I think she's dragging it. Even though Marnier Nixon did the singing for Deborah Kerr, I like it much better. Patricia Morrison is better than Ms. Towers IMO. That said, there's no one else but Yul who could play the King
I saw this beautiful classic on Broadway in the 70’s with Yule Brenner/Constance Towers. ❤❤
Yes!! I saw the two of them Perform this Wonderful Play in NYC in the 70s. Marvelous and fabulous experience.
Timeless wonderful performance from these extraordinary stars!! Fabulous!!

Constance Towers was magnificent and so elegant! Loved this!
Constance is Incredible.
Yul had Excellent Stage Presence & was Great.

@@kennethwayne6857 He had a lot of flings with women - he also had a long affair with actress Marlene Deitrich who was 19 years his senior.
@@victoriabardsley8097 I read somewhere that Noel Coward used to tease his old friend Gertrude by asking "How's Curly?"- his nickname for Brynner.
I never got to see this production of "King," but I have seen Constance Towers and stage and she creates and absolutely amazing beautiful presence.

One of my Bucket List top wishes. I want to dance like that. OMG. Wow!!!
Yul , amazingly charismatic actor and person. Only he can play the King.. xxx
I never knew, Ms Constance sang! She is so lovely and talented!!
So great. Saw it on Broadway and remember this on the telethon. The best!
I saw this cast in Chicago in the 80's.. Loved it!!! Loved June Angela as Tuptim!

Just finished watching "The Horse Soldiers" and had no idea Constance Towers could sing so beautifully!
That is just beautiful.
Fantastic
No one...NO ONE...performed this role like Constance Towers!

Thanks for uploading this. Wish I could find the entire '77 production with Connie & Yul.
The way he says, "Was, aaaaaaaaa, like this" is about the sexiest thing ever, lol.
A true piece of theater history blazing and heartfelt now cyrstlized in our hearts forevermore RIP YB
Does anyone know of there is a dvd recording of this I can buy?? I would love to be able to watch Yul Brynner on Broadway when he was older. ❤️🥺

On Feb. 14, 2020 she was still on General Hospital !
Your voice is beautiful Ms.Towers and that's Anita's opinion.🎵
Loved her in the Horse Soldier 1959 movie starring John Wayne

She is 91.

Why do I keep expecting him to rip off her wig and expose her bald pate?

Sorry, but I much prefer Virginia McKenna as Anna and how she surprised us with her beautiful singing voice.

Yes. I have it. Google can be useful...
