This nonsense goes back to the view that arose about 10 years ago that Te Papa peninsula up to Gate Pa was not sold by the Maori owners to Archdeacon Brown in 1838 but was given to the Church "in Trust" for future Maori development. So, in recent years we have seen the council "gift" land in Mission Street to Iwi and now "gift" to Iwi, ownership to the land in the CBD on which the new civic centre will be built, which council will lease back. Archdeacon Brown was a lawyer before he became a missionary, and he was very careful to draw up sale and purchase agreements (there were two purchases in all) that were valid legal documents. They are still in existence and can be viewed in various books on the history of early Tauranga. The second purchase, which took the church holdings out to Gate Pa and was the larger, took some 18 months to complete as the Maori owners initially asked for a higher price than Brown was prepared to pay. They later reduced their price and the sale went ahead. Even the Anglican church has bought into the myth the land was held in trust and a few years ago we witnessed the spectacle of an Anglican bishop in his knees begging forgiveness of Iwi for the church not honouring its deal and trashing Brown's reputation in the process.
