      Those videos of the wood drying and seasoning are going to be boring.
      DIY one off builders are well advised to use old wood, architectural salvage or old solid wood furniture from the salvation army is good. That way it's really well seasoned. Old pianos and organs can also be good, church pews and lecterns too, they give that real holy tone....seriously, any old wood besides white pine or oak is worth trying.

    Just a little tip for future builds. When making new holes for screws through a finish, run the drill bit in reverse. This causes an easy and slow cut because the bit will act more like a reamer and the blades will be pushing away and this will keep the blades from grabbing the finish and pulling up causing chipping. Once into the wood set drill for normal cutting/drilling direction. Works also for opening holes for tuners and/or tuner bushings with the exception of not setting drill to cut at any time. Just using bit as a reamer. Harbor freight sells a tapered reamer for about $4 and does a decent job. Congrats and nice build !

      That's a tough poll. I'm torn between the Chrome tele and the zebrawood. the strat knobs just look out of place for that build. The chome is good for color balance across the look of the guitar but the Zebrawood has this uniformity to the appearance that makes it pop. it's a beautiful guitar though. and that "tele" mode has a nice sound to it.

      I liked the tele knobs a lot. The zebrawood is a great choice, but the grain doesn’t really match the body wood. I imagine that finding something like that is either very expensive or not available. Same thing with the pickups. I should explain that I’m somewhat confused compulsive about matching things. I make no apologies!:). The tele knobs would have set off the other chrome touches on the finished product.

As a kid, back in 69/70 I had no money, so I made a "guitar". Sounded like it had wooden strings... The best it ever sounded was crackling on a bonfire... Please keep the good work coming. Can't wait for the "tones", so that's where I'm headed right now...

    I’ve been blown away by this channel. I don’t even play guitar very much! Darrell has an enthusiasm for his craft & a style of presentation that I’ve gravitated towards since I started to check out guitars on TH-cam. His style is represented in the choices he makes in presenting what he does to his audience. It even is reflected in the instrumental choices he makes for the videos. Braun is not the best guitar player I’ve ever seen on TH-cam, but he certainly the one with the best taste in the instrumentals that are at the core of his videos. He never lets you forget that building a guitar is done in service of its eventual player, but that building a guitar is an art form onto itself. I’ve found that watching. Darrell Build a guitar is one of the most relaxing things I’ve found on TH-cam. That probably speaks more to my weirdness than his presentation, but it’s a useful function for these videos to serve. I’m a bass player, and I’d like to see Darrell tackle a build of a cross-brand bass. Hopefully that will eventually come to pass. I’m pretty much hooked. I hope that we are able to watch Darrel do his thing for years to come. I hope that TH-cam realizes that he’s a treasure.

    Great build, but my best advice would be to keep your switch and pickup configuration the standard, but install a Gilmour mod which is a small switch that independently activates the neck pickup so you can run the neck and bridge or all 3 if you want. It’s a cheap mod and I do it on my strat copies and any that I can hotrod for my friends

    • @rohadtanyad8908
      @rohadtanyad8908 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      i just put it on a push push switch on the neck tone pot. much better than adding a separate switch.

    • @akc5150
      @akc5150 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rohadt Anyad Was going to say that exact same thing! Sounds good as it is, but with the Gilmour mod you keep ALL the 'standard' options PLUS you can get neck n bridge or even all 3 at the same time. I always do it to Strat style git boxes and the push/pull pot makes it totally invisible and reversible.

    • @rohadtanyad8908
      @rohadtanyad8908 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      akc5150 akc, a push pull pot to me is horrible. especially with strat style knobs, pulling up is a chore. a push push knob is much better. you just tap it. i don't know why everyone installs push pull, it makes no sense to me.

    • @akc5150
      @akc5150 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rohadt Anyad I agree..... to a certain extent. With a push/pull at least you have an instant visual cue as to where you are set... With push/push it's easier to get it wrong from time to time......Unless there are push/push pots that pop up?

    • @rohadtanyad8908
      @rohadtanyad8908 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One thing I learned from Ben at Crimson Guitars is the neck pocket should be rather tight when fitting mating the neck. This prevents any movement of the neck and prevents throwing off intonation. Seems the neck went in a bit loose on this axe (didn't hear creaking). You can add a bit of thin veneer to help tighten it up. Still a gorgeous guitar!

    Turned out pretty cool, Darrel! I think the best part of this match-up may be the combination of body contours - it keeps the Strat nice belly and shoulder contours, but the flat leg base so it doesn't tend to slide off like a Strat. That's very convenient and something quite overlooked, but it makes a difference when playing sit down when using Superstrats with that kind of contouring.

I'm trying it with a Strat body+pickguard cut for humbuckers at neck+bridge... but will cut custom pickguard eventually as Jazzmaster pup at neck overlaps edge of pickguard (but is inside body Ok with some dremmelling).

      I did a squier with a super hot mustang S pickup in the neck, a Tele lipstick pickup in the middle and a pretty hot strat S pickup in the bridge. Changed a pot and wired it to tone both the neck and bridge with the original small pot going to the lipstick tone. Sounds awesome with the 5-way in the 2 and 4 position.

      Yes! I want a strat body with tele pickups, tele neck and hardtail of course. The strat body fits me much better than the tele, but it should be made of basswood, or semi-hollow for lightness. A Teltocaster.

    I would love to see the parts list, vendors, and prices. If you can put all these premiere parts together for less than a production Fender, I would be amazed, and a convert.

    • @mattevans5812
      @mattevans5812 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I added it up from the vendor websites after the parts list video he made of this guitar last week
      Body $445
      Neck $257
      pickups $245
      trem $180
      tuners 140
      electrics $99
      sub total $1366 US without pick guard, knobs, studs, neck plate so add about another $100 unless i missed something big.

    Hey Darrell, great video! Just a quick electronics tip, twist those wire pairs together (pickups, output jack, grounds). This makes working with the electronics a lot cleaner, and does some phsical noise suppression!
    Thanks for doing another awesome build!

    It’s odd that I’m such a fan of simple black knobs. Those wood ones are your obvious choice though :-) and I think most people would agree. Awesome build as always my brother. I’m gonna save a wad of cash, sent it to you and let you make something awesome like this for me, I swear. Every build is cooler than the last.

    I’d vote for the black Strat knobs with a three ply black pickguard that shows a white outline. Beautiful neck with that darker wood headstock. Nicely done

It sounds as good as it looks and I can't wait to hear a proper review of the tones with your usual setup. Your content is absolutely top notch and I look forward to every video you make. Never give up! Especially not when your fingers hurt and hurt more (but learn the right technique right from the start!). Just keep going because the first year is the toughest. The time following will only bring you satisfaction you've never known. To my humble opinion a guitar is one of the few instruments that can make your heart speak every language possible. The only thing a guitar wants from you to be loyal is that you practice over and over again. If you know how loyal a dog can be, you know what I mean.

    Shielding is so inexpensive and such great results. I know solder-less connectors have been around awhile and are great. I'm one of those people that love to solder and see the shiny connection as opposed to bird poop. I also enjoy changing strings. My guitar playing friends don't, so they bring strings, guitars, and beer. I would do it for free, but I'm not going to turn down a cold one. Great video. My next guitar will be a partscaster.

    I was inspired by the strat build you did before this guitar and made my own this year using the obsidian wire strat blender kit and a warmoth neck and body. I ran into the same problems you did in this video with fitting the electronics in the body as well as the pick guard not lining up with the neck (although I knew that would happen because I chose to get the body routed for a Tele style neck.) These were super easy fixes though and it was so rewarding plugging it in and playing after putting all of my carefully chosen pieces together. It’s also so worth it to choose the exact look with the wood and finish and hardware parts of your instrument that makes you want to pick it up every time you see it.

    Wanted to thank you for your Strat/Tele build you did in TH-cam. Not only is it one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen, you showing the equipment to build us such an encouragement. Soldering is not my strong suit, so learning of wiring set ups that are solderless makes the world of difference to folks like me. I assume the writing diagram of what plugs where is user friendly by looks of it. If love to see a video of how you do complete setups someday. Thank you again. I simply LOVE your guitar & your videos as well. From a super fan in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

    RE drilling the holes: I use a pin vise and a really small bit to make starter holes. No chance for finish cracks, and it’s easier to center the bit by starting by hand.

    On my '97 Lone Star Strat, I had modified the wiring to get the neck pickup in parallel with the outside coil of the bridge pick up in position 3 since I almost never use the middle pickup by itself.

    Darrell. For those wanting to build "the exact" guitar, could you start posting a parts list for the actual guitar. You provide the company names but it is difficult to match the parts in your video to those on the website. Also a suggested "price at this time" for the guitar would nice. Thanks for you honest and straight forward reviews!

    Really liked the swapping neck and middle pickup idea... worked great. Such a nice guitar. I'm sure you have used em before, but I bought a 94 Strat Plus Deluxe new (yes I'm that old) It had a Fender Floyd Rose Trem which is a real pain to set-up, but works pretty well, anyway in the Case it comes with a Trem-setter, but they don't install them. It was in the Case for 5 yrs until I decided to check it out. Put that on and you can do 2 whole note bends with the bridge floating. Best thing for em.

    Sweet guitar! Well done, again. Thanks for the video. I am always getting ideas from you and the ‘guns and guitars’ guy. When I finally get my parts and kit going, I will have much less headache as a result of you guys testing these things out. Thanks again. How about a Rickenbacker bass kit build? That would be really cool, especially since you are Canadian and Geddy Lee used to play one, back when Rush made cool music.
