  • This is a combination of 3 petrified wood hunts and includes a bonus video by Christopher Caine where he finds something quite impressive in the Hinds river.
The two main spots I go to for petrified wood in this video is Leithfield Beach and the Kowai River in North Canterbury.
Includes footage of cutting 4 of the rocks I find.
    Hope you enjoy the video!

I think your mystery stone is chert....I assume you have chert there? Conchoidal fracturing, glassy feel, white to cream to gray color. That would be chert here in the US. (Michigan). Love watching your videos! Such a beautiful country! Your jaspers have beautiful colors too. Here in Michigan, most of our jasper is dull red.

Thanks for the ID, we sometimes use jasper and chert interchangeably in New Zealand 😁

Quartzite and I love the agatized pet wood (schist), its one of my favourite's. The odd one at the end could be a chert nodule?

    KiaOra guys,
I've been watching your videos with much intrest.
Subscribed & long ago my father was in to rock hounding. We spent time in coromandel and got chalcedony carnelian petrified woods and petrified pongas ( they were very nice) very hard & had agateised ( if that's correct word)
Your vids take me back to those carefree days & exciting hunts for gems.
Back down South, but way north of you in outer sounds. Find a bit of argalite now and then. & get a little bit of yellow💫 metal here & there up here in Marlborough .
Keep enjoying your self's life is great .
    PS.
I imagine NZ is a bit plain to the amazing South African stones?
    Kind regards guys

Kia Ora Chris! Thanks for the awesome comment, it really made my day! I'm glad you enjoy the videos, it's great fun making them. The area I was in in South Africa didn't have all that much, but I made a trip to Namibia which was just great, agates and crystals galore. Just watch out you don't find a diamond by mistake, De Beers won't be too happy!

Thanks so much Larry! I have a few other videos I need to upload where I find some good agates and pet wood. I also have a fossil channel if you're into that: th-cam.com/users/mamlambo

I was wondering if that piece might be challechy ? Not sure if I spelled that correctly. But otherwise you still had some nice finds for the hunt.

I think it is some form of chalcedony!

If you don't already know him, you should get to know Theo Kellison. Check out his channel (channel name is his name). You two have a lot in common.

Wool socks, clothes keep one toasty although wet in the cold outdoors. I am supposing you know this already. Lol. Just saying. You sure looked so frozen.
