  • The Montana's Best crew ventured to the eastern part of the state for our first episode. Glendive, Montana is one of the top places to go dinosaur digging in the United States. It is not uncommon for locals or visitors to be walking in nature and stumble across some form of fossil.
Come with our host Julie Mac as she meets up with local "dino" guide Shana Baisch. She and her team conduct paleontological days trips on a privately owned ranch within a few miles of Glendive, MT and Makoshika State Park. These educational fossil hunting trips allow visitors to get a little dirt under their nails, learn how to excavate a fossil, and to trek through landscape that is full of earth's history. Don't take our word for it. See for yourself!
If you would like to line up a dinosaur dig day trip be sure to visit:

I've been to the Baisch's ranch three times, with Marge as my guide, and it's so amazing!
I've found many great fossils, including an Edmontosaurus tibia (lower leg bone) that is 2 feet long! There is also beautiful golden agatized petrified wood, and so many other treasures, it's impossible to name them all. It's well worth the drive from my home in Washington.

Just came across this video and have to commend the creators for capturing the experience of a dinosaur dig. My family and I had an excellent two-day dig with Shana on her land during of summer of ‘21. It’s a surreal landscape under the open sky where you don’t know what time-capsule awaits around the corner - but be assured that you will find fossils! Once you begin to recognize the telltale colors and textures, scanning the ground becomes almost meditative. During our two days, we found a variety of alligator teeth, dozens of unidentifiable marrow pieces, and a likely foot bone. But the biggest surprise my 10-year old unearthed from the gumbo was a partial triceratops brow horn - a massive fossil that took several hours to delicately remove and cast. It has since been mounted and proudly displayed in our home, soon to be donated to a local school. Hoping for a return trip in the future.

I just returned from a visit to their site. Wonderful people, Shana is the best. She went out of her way to show and allow us to remove small dinosaur fossils. Finding something like that is just amazing to me! They have a couple of active digs going as well, one of which she showed us. I felt like a palentologist for a day.

@@Litt-10 do you offer dinosaur fossil ID services? I excavated some amazing pieces from a friend's ranch in SD in a section of hell creek formation, (intact, individual and external; still color and texture covering pieces and exquisite detail on internal components). They most closely align with ankylosaurus but that would be pretty rare. If you offer ID services I would love to send you photos.

I have to relate my experiences with Shane and Shana. I’ve been to Baischs two consecutive years and had some SPECTACULAR finds!!!! In 2021, I met Shane with a couple of older people and we had a blast. We found a lot of beautiful agatized wood. Shane found me a fairly large chunk of fossilized ash from the Yellowstone supervolcano. Shane even had the eagle eye to find a very small dino foot. It was a great day. The next day with was with Shana and it was SPECTACULAR!!! We got onto a large triceratops skeleton and there was a LOT to be found. The gentleman that was with me found the frill of the trike, while I found a large, almost two foot long fragment of the ishium, the bone that basically connects the spine to the hips. The other gentleman even found a large fragment of one of the trike horns. REALLY cool!!!
Last year, I spent two days out in the field with Shana and she was very good to me day one. I had an exhausting drive to get there on day one and was brain dead. She was sooo patient with me, helping me find stuff when I was almost falling asleep. She asked me a number of times if I wanted some rest. I eventually took some time to do so. The next day was REALLY good!!! I found a carnivore vertebrate, which was really cool. Later on, we found a T-Rex rib fragment about four inches long, which was the absolute highlight of my short digging career!!! Shana also showed us a very large bone of a T-Rex that’s still in the wall of the butte/hoodoo. I’m almost positive it’s a femur fossil. I swear that bone is almost as long as I am tall.
The experience here is DEFINITELY worth doing!!!! You’ll only have to pay about $120.00 for the whole day as an adult and you’ll be able to take a lot to almost everything of what you find home. It’s something I recognize to anyone who has a desire to dig for things in the ground. They all take GREAT care of you!!! Thanks Shane and Shana for getting me addicted to digging for fossils😬👍👍😬👍👍
