      Eh sometimes simple is better my dude. Look at some portraits people had done 15 years ago...look like someone cried with mascara on and it smears and fades.
      A lot of the simple styles will not be "trendy," like tramp stamps of 2000s, or other trends.
      The more skin breaks..the better IMO...taking care of the skin is more important for darker skin as well..
      Reason being..lots of white people use sun block and moisturizers and beyond. Almost every time they go out.
      .why? Because they are used to getting a sunburn in minutes!
      So when you have darker skin and tattoos...I would talk to one of your ginger friends, or look up online, how to protect from burns and skin damage. Because even if you do not get those red burns as quickly...that does not mean you are not getting skin damage. It will make your tattoo fade much faster.
      You want the tattoo to last and be legible, you need to treat the tattooed skin the same way lighter skinned people have to treat all their skin that hits the sun..
      Not just the auto spf 15 in moisturizer...like legit higher spf and good protection. I'd do some research on high quality sun block, that has a good feel to it.
      And learn to reapply it... sun block stops working after half hour to an hour of sun light.
      I think that is one thing that causes some skin tones tattoos to lose legibility.
      The value and contrast...through healing and sun exposure...Your darks get lighter..and your light colors get lighter/fade.
      I recommend to try painting with gouache on darker colors of paper. It helps understanding the way colors act on a different background color..and helps understand how colors or black and grey will look.

      *Jayda L, tattooing the skin has been a part of African culture for ages/millenniums. But the problem is that you have the wrong mindset. Our ancestors did not compare themselves to any people like you're doing, and desiring to achieve their results. Black people outside the continent think tattooing the skin is a Caucasian thing, but it is just another cultural practice of black and brown people, that Caucasians looked down on hundreds of years ago, and now they are just copying it with new products.*

    I had to come back to this video because I just visited the page of the tattoo artist that has done Cardi B's recent tattoo upgrade. His style can be best described as photo-realism in vibrant colors. Since he has done Cardi's tattoo, I've noticed more people of color, in particular people with darker brown skin, asking him for tattoos. Or some people ask why the artist doesn't post photos of people with dark brown skin on his page. A few people did leave comments, in effort to educate people about full-color photo-realism tattoos. But people don't want to accept the information.

    • @mariyahj8609
      @mariyahj8609 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Cardi B also is fair complexion, I feel like that helped with her tattoo and why it looks so colorful and pops the way it did.
      Not to say that brown skin people can’t get color because I have reds and greens on me that look really good and stand out. Honestly I prefer blacks and grays.

    All I’m gonna say is I’m between five and six and I have a color realistic Ocean Tattoo. Personally, I was never satisfied with hearing about what my skin could do so I got a color wheel with just the basic tones including dark, green light green, three different blues, yellows, purple and pink from that I found out that my skin handles color a lot better than I thought it would and I was able to have a more realistic expectation of what my skin would do with each color

    This is incredibly helpful. If your skin is 8 or darker, is there really no way to get a strong tattoo? Without the risk of the colors blending or becoming too muddled together? I've had one Black tattoo artist say the quality of the ink used will make a difference, but he didn't elaborate what he meant by quality. I genuinely don't think he was referring to price alone. More like how it's manufactured.

    • @XavierPrice
      @XavierPrice  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Everything I said In this video is assuming that you are already using quality ink. There’s no special ink that works better for black people.

    I'd talk about taking care of the skin. Lighter colored skin people are used to using sub blocking products religiously...or covering with clothes..A guy playing basketball or hanging out without a shirt in the sun, will cause fading much faster.
    Just a habit difference that can make the difficulty of having a legible dark skin tattoo...much worse.
    Even if a darker skinned person does not get the same lobster like sun burns like a lighter skinned person...the sun still damages their skin, which causes the fading to go so fast.
    So any research into sun blocks that are powerful, yet feel nice, and then applying that anytime you are in the sun for over 10 min, that can likely slow down the fading of a tattoo by 5 years..plus. taking care of the skin will also help.
    But I think some of the dark skin tattoos I've seen..are just so beautiful. You can tell a lot of time and effort was put into them

    I think some visual examples showing the range on the graph would help. Showing what all of it is supposed to look like or not look like. That way you wont need to know alot about the art styles on the graph or need to visualize them on different tones. I went looking for some examples to try and get a sense of color and it was all white people.

    • @XavierPrice
      @XavierPrice  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ashwater skydust because skin tone is a spectrum it would be impossible to show every style on every skin type this is a general guide to help you make and informed decision about what style you should pick with your skin tone. What you should do is find the style that works best for your skin tone and then find a capable artist that’s able to execute it for you

    • @Angels-3xist

    Imma get a Magnolia flower tattoo on my back small over a 10 year old scar. What’s think on my 5 to 4 skin tone.. please answer if yo can. It represents the state I was born in. I was going to do the Prince symbol but the Magnolia is way better.

      Imma 5 to 6 skin tone color. But I think my skin tone will enhance the flower color.

      Yes I would just make sure it’s done big enough and bold enough for proper legibility

    My tatt just finished peeling and idk why but it looks faded asf, I missed a day of moisturizing a few days ago and it just almost completely peeled and I panicked. I feel like where it peeled from that time may not have got enough ink, am I being paranoid or???

    • @XavierPrice
      @XavierPrice  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ink heals about 30% lighter than it is when it’s fresh the artist has to make sure they are using dark enough values to compensate for that.

      a year late lol, but even white people's skin eventually fades out white ink. white ink just doesnt hold well, it fades or changes color for pretty much everyone-i heard one tattoo artist talking about one time she was tattooing with pure white ink and then halfway through the tattoo the ink just started looking grey

    As a dark skinned Black person I have great realism tattoos. Yea there are limitations but its NOT impossible like some artists like to claim. I'm about Jon Jones skin complexion. But yes, in my opinion dark skinned Black ppl CAN get realism tats but there are just some limitations. Now color tattoos? I avoid... But yea highly disagree with your realism chart when it comes to dark skin.

    • @XavierPrice
      @XavierPrice  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you dark skinned ppl can get realistic tattoos. But there are limitations and they are not for all skin types. When you have 14 years experience in tattooing all skin types maybe you’ll agree with me

    Dear Xavier, thank you for the good explanation. I was wondering wether the skin undertone (more green, yellow, red) etc is also applicable for people with lighter skin tones? So certain colour palettes will be more flattering than others?

      CASHPABLO to make it simple for you if your lighter skinned it’s easier to get black and greys realism. Someone of my complexion can still get realism but with restrictions. Hope that helps
