It's a really fun game! I normally get sick of city builders because they get harder and harder until you inevitably fail, but this one is paced like a board game. It's a challenge, it's a challenge, and then suddenly, you win! You don't have to continue living with your mistakes for hours until they drag you down.
Or you'll just learn the cookie cutter build order, diplomacy actions to take etc....that doesn't fail and it gets boring. This tries to break that apart and it also has loads of difficulty settings.
Truly the city builder for people who get tired of city builders. I bought this years ago and I can't believe how incredible the developers were the entire early access. The amount of content they added the transparency listening to feedback while maintaining their holy original ideas is something every company should try to mimic. I'm so glad they are seeing success!
Bought it two years ago in early access and it’s only got better and better. Glad to see you dipping back in now it’s been released! The devs are brilliant.
I bought this on the strength of the videos you did for it last year. Like way back in early access, pre-foxes, pre-seals. I have not regretted it. I'd never have found it if not for you. I think Pravus said he uploaded his videos because you evangelized it to him as well. So big thanks.
Please keep making AtS and OW content. You're Civ 6 content helped save my mental health back during the pandemic and it continues to be the bread and butter of my TH-cam diet, but your AtS and OW content is also wonderfully entertaining.
I found out about AtS from your video back in early access, and I've loved every second of it since then, even if I've not gotten that far with it. Thank you for introducing me to such a great game I've barely scratched the surface of, and just spotlighting as many games as you do, PotatoMcWhiskey.
You totally forgot about your huge pickled goods play, that would give +8 resolve to every one of your species. You even backed it with a cornerstone that would give 10 meat jerky for every 10 pickled goods produced, then you never made any. The seal fragments you got as a reward in the end, are used to close increasingly difficult rifts as a boss mission at the end of the cycle.
I end up looking for more players that make AtS videos, because they make them slowly, and not that many people watch them, niche game. Like more than 5 channels i am watching for it. Pravus also do play it. Really enjoy grid play, was surprised that Nilaus didn't build grid, while city block in Factorio is his go to. Also i understand that is it harder to not make mistakes while streaming, i usually play it very slow, to not make many mistakes, triple check everything before pausing. Even then i make mistakes that lose my games 10 viceroy so far, my favorite game till Factorio DLC comes out.
Me, too, bought this game because of you when it released a month or so ago and was 35% off. 35% off again, Potabros, get it now! A bit terrifying to jump into, but like Hades, you lose nothing from failure, and it's quite refreshing to courageously dive in accepting all the unexpected. Learning curve is not bad at all, and seriously, after your first couple runs (about 2 hrs each for me) increase the difficulty! Viceroy by your 5th-8th run is just fine.
I'm so freaking happy that you're playing this game. I love your Civ videos, but this just scratches a deep itch for me. Your edit and commentary style just works so well with this game.Against the Storm is just such a great and complex game. I''d LOVE to see more
Hey man, I just want to thank you for your video. I just bought the game. I am not dissapointed :) I am older gamer and it is clearly visible that devs created the game that they are playing as well like it was done back in the days. It is absolute gem of a game with high replayability. That said, wish you all the best in new year, stay safe and healthy.
This has been my favorite game to play this year. Glad to see this video. Hope more people enjoy it's truly the best city builder ever made. I can't go back to others after this, they don't feel as satisfying
I'm so glad you posted a video of this game almost a year ago. I played it a bit then and waited till release and I've put in a ton of time since. It's an incredible game
Looks super cute with the aesthetics, and the seasonal mechanics and the plays you can make with goods flowing from basic to more refined are sweet too.
oh i am glad that you are playing this game again! I am not half as good as you are at the game and I am absolutely loving to see and analyse what you are doing)
I've got almost 140 hours in this and I'm only level 16 or so and there's stuff I haven't seen yet. This game has incredible value for money and it comes with one of my favorite game soundtracks ever. It runs smooth (I'm playing frames locked at 75 in 1440p on my 6800xt) and I haven't had a single crash. This really is a modern masterpiece.
the problem is that the more blueprints you unlock, more basic blueprints start becoming rarer. meaning you basically have to guess what is going to be the most valuable production building right at the beginning, because if you choose, lets say, a gathering or farm building wrong, there is chance you won't get another pick. thankfully, traders often will be selling some of those basic blueprints.
The game looks like it might be a lot fun play, but the learning curve on this thing is nuts!! Like, I could see playing it for 8 hours a day, and it would probably still take a few months to get somewhat comfortable with it. I'd be interested to hear from those who've tried it, how it felt initially and how long did it take to feel like, "ok, I think I get it." 🤔
It starts out really simple. A lot of the mechanics don't appear until you move up to higher difficulties but dealing with them gives you more resources at the end. If you stuck on the first couple difficulties you'd have a pretty chill time with it. After you feel ready you can move up.
My brother just tried this after I told him I had fun with it for 250hrs so far. He said at first it was simple he understood the order of things then he went out into some new place couldn't use some of that stuff as he got different buildings and everyone got mad and left. He was very indifferent about how it worked haha.
Im currently progressing through it on the settler mode just trying to get a hang on stuff. When im done ill go again on higher difficulties too. For sure months of casual playing with insane replayability.
@Psysso The game does a fantastic job of introducing additional improvements gradually, so it never feels overwhelming. Starting out, there are WAY fewer things to keep in mind than in this video, which is great for new players!
Just started playing this yesterday. Today I was like, "ok. I'm struggling. Imma go to TH-cam and see if anyone I'm subscribed to, shows up in my search for gameplay for this game." Thank GOD your name showed up. 😊
Hey Potato, just an FYI any species can eat any food but providing fancy food to a species that doesn't gain a buff out of it is (porridge and lizard) is actually worse as it take up man power, time and I think it provides less food overall. Edit: I was wrong about the "provides less food" bit
heck yeah, all the roads. Finally someone who surrounds their districts with roads, has a road network and upgrades them. It simply must be done. I almost feel like jumping back in...
I’m stoked you got back around to playing this game. They have made a lot of changes leading up to v.1.0. It’s one of my favorites and SO satisfying to play. I even backed their beaver plushy they released. lol
Big up to the devs of against the storm too, they're super reactive, they took suggestions from everyone so long as they made sense, still followed their vision, insane
YES!!! I’ve been playing this game on and off for a long while and I’m SO glad to see Potato playing it again! I’ve beaten it twice at 20 prestige, but not since the new seal mechanic. I hope he plays more!
Generally speaking I love RTS and 4X games, but I'm not usually too much into city builders because they tend to feel a bit too sandboxy for me. This one however is an absolute gem, the combination of a city builder and a roguelite is fantastic. It feels like playing Darkest Dungeon except in strategy game format. Part of me finds it a bit repetitive but nevertheless every game is slightly different due to the different biomes, maps, and the random nature of the buffs, hazards, and blueprints Bought it a week ago just before the Steam Christmas sales ended (was only €20 at the time) and already got 62 hrs in it since lol
Peasant supplies is probably the best trading cornerstones, it's a lot of supplies especially if you pick up extra people per caravan. And waiting out the last one rep when you had a task ready to turn in :D.
This game looked fun so I decided to give it a whirl and oh my god I am having so much fun, thank you for demoing! I always know games you play are worth a look and this was absolutely a hit!!
If you press escape you can see what resources there are to find when cutting down trees in the pause menu. 45:30 Almost Salvaging the first excavation site hurt my soul, well done catching that. 48:05 I could be wrong but I also think that if you repair the extractor it also works as a Rainwater generator and not ONLY as a blue decoration. Repairing lost technology usually gives you long-term rewards but is significantly more expensive. Other than that most things were well thought out and a good representation of the gameplay of this particular biome. Some biomes play very very differently.
Now I really want to watch you take a crack at the higher Prestige levels (all the way up to 20). Especially with how you like to utilise trade, the scammy traders modifier might be interesting to watch you work around.
I've been playing this game so much I've maxed out the upgrades... but I never knew you could increase the amount of stuff you could sell in a trade route!
You seem to be some what advanced into the tech tree, do you have the field kitchen? It is amazing for early game food processing, even thou it is the worst in sense of efficiency it still allows you to make more consumption units by turning raw food into processed food. I.e. you could turn 8 meat + some wood into 10 jerky, which in this case give your lizards a resolve bonuse as well and if you only have limited supply of raw food you can always ristrict the raw food consumption to don´t waste it. Another tipp you can extend the pop tab (upper left corner) by clicken on the arrow and favor a race if you got more than one, which gives the favort one +5 resolve and the other -5 and you can use it to gain some easy reputaion through resolve.
This be perfect start and restart style to oxygen not included where the start is really fun and it gets super slow and taxing towards the end of mid game
It's difficulty 4 out of 24. The challenge of the game is to beat it on 24 (prestige 20) like 15 maps in a row without wasting years. Trust me, by storm standards this is chill.
Haven't played in a while myself and was hooked again. Currently in the middle of my queen's hand trial. It is great to see other people gameplay for perspective! Hello, noob here. I want to start a game as Mansa Musa on desert settings and I want to be against the worst civilizations on desert tiles, which ones do you think are the worst for deserts? I set it on Pangea, Huge, Hot, Arid, Low +18 civs, 18 city states, 2 disaster
So I watched the first few bits of Against the Storm content you put out, and honestly it didn't appeal to me. Then my friend bought it for me a couple weeks ago, and I've put in 50 hours since then. In my opinion, this is one of those games that plays much better than it watches, and I can't quite put my finger on what it is that makes it that way.
It makes no sense that tasks like excavation need food. The villagers already require food to live lmao You could argue that working means they need more calories, but in that case they would just require more food while excavating, not a very specific type of food. "Oh I'm digging up ruins so I'm only eating eggs" Makes -5 sense
I thought he was making a grid, but oh goodness THAT is NOT a grid. I've been playing since beta and have worked out a whole grid system. (I may have some OCD) Not that I'm telling people how to play, but watching this kind of hurt. I do suggest to make a plan in the beginning of what blueprints you will need to get to satisfy your people and if they come up to pick them even if you don't have the supply chain set up yet. You can backfill later. I also suggest trying to get a good plank recipe as soon as you can as they tend to be the biggest bottleneck. (also you don't want to waste all your logs in the 0 level recipe when you need them for your hearth)
Im enjoying it, done 23 maps but i still wouldn't call it a city builder. Everyone does but.......Idk its just strategy and resource management....a puzzle even.
It's a really fun game! I normally get sick of city builders because they get harder and harder until you inevitably fail, but this one is paced like a board game. same. great game.
I will echo that, every game is a good time.
yeah the fox update really changed the game. Maybe too strong for a population now
Finally someone who plays this game with a grid layout. You have no idea how much of a relief that is. 😂
I bought this on the strength of the videos you did for it last year. Like way back in early access, pre-foxes, pre-seals. I have not regretted it. I'd never have found it if not for you. I think Pravus said he uploaded his videos because you evangelized it to him as well. So big thanks.

Ah, the classic Pickle Play
I love this game so much. I cannot get enough of you playing against the storm. I really hope there's more coming in the future ❤

FINALLY
THE WET ROUGELIKE
Thanks for the christmas present, i love watching you play this game.
I found your channel the last time you did a series on this. I love this game, and I love your content. Really glad to see you playing it again.
I'm so glad you posted a video of this game almost a year ago. I played it a bit then and waited till release and I've put in a ton of time since. It's an incredible game
this video deserves more views. AtS is such a fun game, specially for people that like to play sim city in 4x games haha
17:36
"I'm gonna go ahead and tell this to reveal the next archelogical digsite"
Reveals the one already found but not solved
"Are you kidding me?"
Absolutely agree - and their dev team and community are amazing too
Looks super cute with the aesthetics, and the seasonal mechanics and the plays you can make with goods flowing from basic to more refined are sweet too.
Super glad to see Against The Storm returning to your channel!

@@sethyboy0 Thanks for your response. I tried it and you're right - on the "tutorial" difficulty it's absolutely doable 😅

Just started playing this yesterday. Today I was like, "ok. I'm struggling. Imma go to TH-cam and see if anyone I'm subscribed to, shows up in my search for gameplay for this game." Thank GOD your name showed up. 😊
A tip: When assigning workers to a building. Try holding down shift. It will auto assign the selected species to all slots.
Look up the fragments. They are basically the reason to keep playing apart from beating all the prestige levels. Unlocks very hard missions on the map
Hey Potato, just an FYI any species can eat any food but providing fancy food to a species that doesn't gain a buff out of it is (porridge and lizard) is actually worse as it take up man power, time and I think it provides less food overall.

Love this game! Glad you're playing again
Love your against the storm content!
This is a great game! Thanks for coming back around to it to remind me to jump back in!
I tried the demo back in early access and loved it so much I bought it. This is a great game.
I’m stoked you got back around to playing this game. They have made a lot of changes leading up to v.1.0. It’s one of my favorites and SO satisfying to play. I even backed their beaver plushy they released. lol

Potato plays Viceroy to chill while I'm getting my butt whooped in Veteran😂
Amazing Game! The only downside is now I want a city builder to have modifiers like Against the Storm. I absolutely love this game too much.
Yeah, more Against the Storm! I love it!
Hope you had happy holidays!
You can hear the excitement in your voice so obviously you really love the game
YES!!! I’ve been playing this game on and off for a long while and I’m SO glad to see Potato playing it again! I’ve beaten it twice at 20 prestige, but not since the new seal mechanic. I hope he plays more!
I bought it a few months ago and fell in love with it. It's so damn good that I convinced a friend to get it and they loved it too

YES HE'S BACK.
Mr Tater, please continue making vids of this game.
I bought this game after your first play through and have been absolutely loving it
This game looked fun so I decided to give it a whirl and oh my god I am having so much fun, thank you for demoing! I always know games you play are worth a look and this was absolutely a hit!!
I love AtS it’s a great city builder while it’s rogue like elements prevent it getting boring as you have to work differently every time.
17 hours straight on my Steam Deck! That never happens for me anymore that a game is so captivating. Thanks Taters for enlightening me to it!
If you press escape you can see what resources there are to find when cutting down trees in the pause menu.
45:30 Almost Salvaging the first excavation site hurt my soul, well done catching that.

Other than that most things were well thought out and a good representation of the gameplay of this particular biome.
Some biomes play very very differently.
The most exciting part of city builders is always the early game and this game distilled all of that goodness down and polished it to a shine.
Now I really want to watch you take a crack at the higher Prestige levels (all the way up to 20). Especially with how you like to utilise trade, the scammy traders modifier might be interesting to watch you work around.
I’m in love with this game.
You've sold me on this game, gonna wish list it now
I’m a huge Civ head but I still play Age of Wonders 4 constantly which I only discovered from you, so I’m here for new games you recommend!
I've been playing this game so much I've maxed out the upgrades... but I never knew you could increase the amount of stuff you could sell in a trade route!
Oh man this has changed a *lot* since I last played. I should pick it back up again and figure it all out.
This is the sign i was waiting for! Will buy AtS as my Christmas gift. Thanks!
Best thing about this game is being able to instantaneously move buildings, well most buildings.
I love this game!! I'm happy to see you play it!!!!
I bought this half-way through the video. It's amazing
Just bought it on steam and played my first match, love the game! Hoping for more ATS content in the future!
When i bought this game i had 37 hours played in 3 days...it too much addictive lol
Lizards 🤝 The Irish
(Fans of Religion & Brawling)
Potato: "I want a nice chill game because i havent played in a while."
Potato: picks the hardest base game difficulty
It's difficulty 4 out of 24. The challenge of the game is to beat it on 24 (prestige 20) like 15 maps in a row without wasting years. Trust me, by storm standards this is chill.
Haven't played in a while myself and was hooked again. Currently in the middle of my queen's hand trial. It is great to see other people gameplay for perspective! I last played when scarlet orchards just came out and I must say all the new stuff they came up with is great. Rainpunk is pretty awesome!
For building materials like bricks and planks you put a limit of 15. Which is nothing. I usually have 10 on 0-star recipes, 20 on 1-2 star recipes, and 40 for 3-star recipes. For planks it is ×1.5 so up to 60.
I figured out this numbers for moment when you building shrine, tea doctor or something similar in how it costs, and it will not consume all of your stored materials, stopping entire production chain.
Probably my numbers too big, but at least for planks is better to have about 40 ALWAYS, i think.
Also i put limit of 70 for goods like special food, ale or training gear. And 100 on flour, for no reason.
I'm old, and I'm really tired...do I /have/ to be hyped? Can I be, oh, a bit interested?
love this game, got it after seeing it on your channel.
Waited for you to come back. Nice christmas gift!
A lot of missed opportunities for renown from preferring the lizards.
PS: you gonna do any prestige grinding in future? Would love to see you struggle a bit more :P
idk why you posted 3 vids within 3 hours, might want to consider playing the algorithm more.
I would love to see more runs of against the storm on your channel
Just started it yesterday! It's a slow burner
Such a fun game. Im still progressing up the prestige ladder and having a blast
I'm still floored by this game, still need to work on micromanagement of food types by races.
Where is the part that describes what makes this city builder special? Im trying to find an interest in this game but nothing really stands out.
You do not have the best memory, often misclicking or forgetting what you already are building, but you do know what you are doing, so it is fine.
I'm not hyped ... I'm playing it and loving it
I love that game, can we see more vids of it pls
Hello, noob here. I want to start a game as Mansa Musa on desert settings and I want to be against the worst civilizations on desert tiles, which ones do you think are the worst for deserts? I set it on Pangea, Huge, Hot, Arid, Low +18 civs, 18 city states, 2 disaster
Those seem like reasonable options
I'm obsessed with this game.
It's not quite a city builder. It verges on being a puzzle game. That said, although I despise puzzle games, I agree this game is absolutely amazing.
wow learned so much in the first 15minutes
insanely addictive
Thanks a lot, just got the game and I really enjoy it…
Coming to the comments to talk about how Potato sold the tablet and never used his based pickled goods bonus
What the hell, you can increase the amount of trade goods???
It makes no sense that tasks like excavation need food. The villagers already require food to live lmao
You could argue that working means they need more calories, but in that case they would just require more food while excavating, not a very specific type of food.
"Oh I'm digging up ruins so I'm only eating eggs"
Makes -5 sense
will you do seven seas challenge?😮

(also you don't want to waste all your logs in the 0 level recipe when you need them for your hearth)
Choosing which blueprints you want at the start will not work on higher difficulties

Im enjoying it, done 23 maps but i still wouldn't call it a city builder. Everyone does but.......Idk its just strategy and resource management....a puzzle even.
