In the AMC series, Leaphorn must have a certain level of Dine spiritual beliefs as he smears something from his medicine pouch around his eyes when he starts his investigation.

Yes in the books he is very different. He was raised traditional tho and was, at some point, more devout. I'm betting the leaphorn in the show is gonna lose his faith when {SPOILER ALERT?} Emma has that tumor. They may not do that tho, but its a guess.

That is ash that he marks on the sides of his eyes. It deflects dark energy as they refer to it. In the real Dineh way...it's smudged once on the left side of the cheek, as if you are preparing for battle. Enjoy the way.

A super video. I love your tone of delivery and your intriguing and unique thought processes. You create in me an interest to pull out the Hillerman novels.

Thanks for this analysis. I have the same problems as you mentioned.
Also, I think Wes Studi and Adam Beech do a more believable job of representing the Hillerman characters.

Great to compare the books and the series. I love both--I really like the layering of Indigenous ceremonies and FBI and greedy business types. Please keep these coming.

Actually, the business about sterilizing women without their permission happened way beyond reservations and to Native American women. My mother's doctor did not think she should have a second child, and when she became pregnant with my sister, he tried to abort her. He failed. When my sister was born, he tied my mother's tubes while she was under anastasis so she could not get pregnant again. This happened in 1949 rural America to a poor white (farm) family. In mid-century America doctors playing God was not confined to reservations and in minority communities in big city ghettos.
I recorded the whole series after it had aired and watched all six episodes in a two-day binge session. The storyline borrowed from several books and did not stick very closely to Hillerman's characters as noted here. I read all the books and saw all the PBS series when they aired a few years ago. To be honest I liked the PBS series more than I liked this series. That said, I still liked this series enough so that I am looking forward to the second season. They pulled it together in the end, and I was satisfied with the results.

I'm a fan of Tony Hillerman and his daughter's writing. I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish the TV series due to it being reimagined. Also I noticed a continuity error. The family of Mormons who get kidnapped are drinking soda, something Mormons wouldn't do.

Yes, you're right, but having lived in Utah for several years, I found that there were all "levels" of Mormons just like there are of any other religion. Some are Mormon enough to attend temple but not especially observant otherwise. Drinking soda would be a pretty minor infraction, anyway.

I read the books in the late 50's in college. I have only seen the first episode of Dark Winds & liked it very much. I would like to see more, but I don't support pay tv. It isn't available to everyone.

It was a good story and great actors. However, it should not have passed it off as following legendary Hillman novels. I was disappointed at first. When i separated it my my favorite Hillerman storyline than i enjoyed it for what it was.
