"Aikido is not for the purpose of defeating other people. Nor is it for gaining victory in a fight, or to conquer in war. It is the purpose of attaining success in the individual mission, which Heaven has assigned to each one of us." O sensei

Yeah, true... I'm 13y old girl and just started aikido. I've been just in two lessons, but I've learned very fast many things. One reason why I learned very fast is that I have a great Sensei and I feel like I've found the right thing.... I have tried so many hobbies, but I have quit them cuz I really didn't like them and they like weren't meant for me...

Well it is based on the religious teachings of a cult so you aren't far off. That's not to insult aikido btw, it encourages decent attributes in people.

When learning Aikido we become non-offensive, non-defensive and non-reactive. We don't push or pull, we create a flow which balances everything out. It's creating a balance in energy which means that we don't attract or create those situations where we have to fight in the first place. Hence, when we are good at Aikido, we will never have to use it in real life.

This is an excellent way to practice, once you can do this without an aggressive state of mind all fear disappears. You become focused on the positive sides of life & than there is no need to fight, to destroy or compete. The difference between the martial arts & martial sports lies in this video. Aikido teaches how to win without hurting the opponent, but if needed it is deadly. The way I become to understand Aikido in my 15 years of practice, it's more of a spiritual path than a fighting style. It changed me on the deeper levels & made me more confident & less angry or nervous.

I think this might be the single most important video on ALL of TH-cam about Aikido. Training as metaphor. When properly I took the idea of 'blending with one's circumstances' to heart, my entire attitude to life changed.

The reach the mindset aikido practitioners aspire to, you need intensity and realism. I did aikido for about 2 years, and many schools lack both because few individuals, regardless of style, want to go through that very tough mental and physical process. Bones get broke, people knocked out, ribs bruised … I ain’t fun, until it is! That said, there is still benefit to any training. I like the art, and it can get you in good shape.

Very nice. Finally, a video that shows that Aikido is not a street fighting method, but was created as a way of personal and spiritual development. Let the street fighters scoff and go do something else. This is for those ready to let go of their own BS and *not* fight.

Dear Sir, and excellent idea of you pointing out the main principles of behaviour by the Aikido.
The principles of Aikido, however, are also present in Judo or even Jiu Jitsu.
Why Aikido deserves attention is offering evasion of brute force with elegant movements often wihtout holding firmly the opponent and applying locks or hits.
Another benefit is helping people understanding body motions and showing leverage against strong holds or pushes.
If intended for self-defence, however, soime grading this presentation according to the proficiency levels of traininees, showing what to use and when against stronger or more sophisticated opponents.
    Best regards.
    Paul

though i put more on the individual than the art in MOST contests of martial skill
for the 'would it work' question about aikido - i enjoyed this on youtube -
    Pro Fighter vs Aikido Master
A friend was told, "aikido is no good for fighting" and she responded, "but it's good for not-fighting".
each of us is unique with unique drives behind our study. train whatever you feel harmony with; and though i value to some degree whatever skill i may have developed, the martial realm was not my primary interest in the art.
it was more the application of the principles to a larger question; the creation of individuals and a society that could focus the power and energy, rather than on conflict, but to, as the founder said, "create a beautiful world".
here's what i know in my later years. i had an inordinate amount of fun training through the years and sincerely feel the training helped me deal with people and problems more positively and creatively.
whatever your interest i wish you the best in your training
and thank you for watching and contributing.

I've practiced Aikido for 5 years, not to learn how to fight but to learn how to not fight.
Basically you learn to create balance, not only in yourself but also in relation to others.
Therefore, having trained Aikido and using the principles in your life, you won't have to fight, because you won't even get in a situation where there is a fight or attack in the first place.
The original martial art was Daito Ryu Aiki juijtsu, a form of jujitsu, which O'sensei and his son transfered in a non combatative art.
Ultimately, being in harmony with yourself and the world, you will be in the right place at the right time. Never attracting any form of fight or attack. Just not finding yourself in those situations, so not needing to apply any fighting techniques in real life at all. Just chill and be happy.

  • @Elriuhilu
    @Elriuhilu ปีที่แล้ว

The title of this video initially made me a little wary of the message, but after actually watching it I am glad to find such a clear and accurate explanation of the true premise behind Aikido, unlike so many sources that either misrepresent the art as some kind of badass "too deadly for the UFC" thing, or disparage Aikido because "that wouldn't even work in a real fight." It's not supposed to "work in a real fight" as presented, but to teach you the patience and strength of character to avoid even needing to fight in the first place. If you want to learn how to defend yourself when someone is already trying to beat you up, just remember that Aikido is adapted from Jujutsu which shares practically all of the underlying principles but simply applies them in a more violent manner.

When i practiced aikido, i used to attack very fast, to make the student think and learn to react to real situation. But i feel blocking needs to be taught in a stronger manner with more emphasis. The katas must be performed with flow, precision and power. Technique 1 in the standard 17, has a very weak unrealistic block, unless you adapt it with speed and weight focus. Your enemy in the street is not going to sit and wait for you to perform a beautiful technique. Surprisingly, technique 10 has helped me many times in street combat situations.

I can agree with the demonstrations being unrealistic in this video. The whole idea behind budo is to get yourself to unconsciously react in an appropriate way to a situation - the way aikido does it is it takes things a step back and tries to make sure you understand the principles behind the movements before drilling technique after technique as there's like 800-odd, by some sources, to learn. This video being a principle demonstration doesn't really allow for a good look at "realness" in terms of a fight situation, the problem is that many schools stop quite a few steps short of developing realness - this is mostly left to the individual practitioner as aikido is practiced by both the very young and the very old, who may not always take physical "abuse" as stronger people in their 20's and 30's would. It's all got a reason, I suppose :)

Aikido is more than self defense . it's about Balance of life , balance within ones self ( ki ) = oneness with the universe . The true success of life.
Matierial things , fighting are irrelevant. But I understand your point of view, the philosophy of the art is much deeper than most people realize.
I'm sure thats also why the MMA is always putting down this art form as well .

Nice principles. Problem with Aikido, is that the uke are so compliant typically that the practitioners can never really learn how to execute. if they were ever faced with any reasonable opposition (a real attack) ... they will find that their techniques will fail not because the techniques are invalid; they will fail because the practitioner never developed the skills, timing and feel to actually make the techniques work.
In this video, you can see it, where the uke are just waiting to fall.

This is clearly not a video about the martial side of aikido. There isn’t a problem with aikido, only the problem of being clear what your goals are. If your goal is to be a fighter in the octagon, a class discussing physical interaction as metaphor for approaching relationships in daily life - family, business, etc. is clearly not where you should be. If this video was claiming to be a class in street self-defense your comment would make sense, but it’s clearly not.

I believe what a lot of people who talk bad about Aikido dont realize is that Morihei Ueshiba wanted people to learn to flow and connect with others and be more harmonious with life energies. Yes it has a defense aspect to it and can be modified just as a harmless, beautiful plant can be made into a poison or a medicine. I think people who only want MMA and combat / special forces or whatever results are missing the point. People also forget that many of the martial arts were designed in a time where most people are not worried about competition and fighting as much as we all do these days there also was not so many classes on combat arts all over the world as they are now so some of these were truly used for self defense as well and some of them were used to save lives because it was the only method of training to defend yourself against the tyranny of governments and rogue groups that went around raping and pillaging. I think we need to learn to appreciate the different martial arts for what they are and what they were meant for and I think some people should stop trying to group everything into their ideas of whether or not one thing is better than the other you see this all the time these days putting simple things against each other is Aikido better than Muay Thai, is Tae Kwon Do better than Savate etc. Its a very immature thing that reminds me when I was young with the whole "Well my dad is better than your dad" concept, When both parties should have just been happy that they had good parents that they could brag about.

The major problem with Aikido is there is almost total cooperation in the attack/defence encounters. The person ‘attacking’ gives up after making the initial move and then participates in being thrown.

Walter Kiel it's funny actually. I used to do aikido, and in a drawing book that had a page about drawing aikido. It had little facts on the pages and it said that when a user throws their opponent to the ground, they'll give them a quick small massage to relax and calm them so their opponent isn't always angry and messing up. I love the style of it all.

Lived on streets from age 10. Age 17 /18 doing doors after years kickboxing. Had experience once when had both wrists grabbed on dancefloor,,numb ! looked into aikido after that,,wrist grabs focal point,,in one lesson learned it lazy as seemed to me. Anyhow after 13 yrs on door i went into dept of justice,,biggest fear blades,,best defense is aikido for sharp objects,,,fact. Aikido has its place,,esp when dealing with sharp pointy objects.

Love this stuff but yet to see a realistic attack at full speed. I have never seen a fight on the street where the victims wrist is grabbed, i see punches being thrown randomly. Is there a video that shows this at full speed and slowed down anywhere?

Thing is I am 61 almost 62 (female) and have Osteoporosis mainly in my spine, although I'm still quite fit and my physical energy's not bad either, but I do worry about the falling involved in Aikido. What do you think, would it be advisable? I hope you say yes!

hi jo , you dont have to fall, aikido can be used for all our abilitys, even with your disability of having Osteoprosis , or any other ailment , the true purpose of aikido is unification of mind and body , to help us in daily life, to understand our true self , and to know our body's limitations , and ajust our practise to suit our needs , and age is fine , our body's have limits but there are no limits to the mind , practice ,

I am nearly 60, weigh 260lbs, just recovering from a LDA heart attack, 60lbs overweight but reducing by 10lbs per month. I used to be a strong fit cyclist, but have damaged right rotator cuff and hyper-extension to the right hip. Now doing 10,000 steps per day. Is Aikido out of the question or should I just stick to looking at it on the internet?

You won´t be able to train like the youngsters but the movements are suitable for people of all ages. Where I live there´s a sensei that teaches people in wheelchairs and even blind people...

I was thinking though circular momentum pinning, joint locks, striking, throws ,etc basically aikido can be used by a murderer, or someone with malice in their heart, yet expertly skilled in aikido and other martial arts. So these principles are great, but don't confuse that as being equal to physical ability and understanding...meaning you can be the nicest loving person and study aikido, harmonize in the teaching etc and get robbed or hurt by an evil person with more skill and training...the lesson is train hard and know your limits, but in real life good or bad winning a fight is about more than who is the most zen and at peace with the world...nice vid

mike smith a person robbing and stealing isnt in harmoney and therefore could NOT be more talented in Aikido than someone who walks the path of peace.

How Does Aikido Work Against Someone Who's Bigger & Stronger Who's Got Both Of Your Wrists While Stationary & You're Trying To Create Flow To Move Them But You're Trapped In Their Grasp & Can't Move.?

    • @kennethkron4170
      @kennethkron4170 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Get someone helpful to grab you and try relaxing your shoulders and elbows to see what kind of freedom that gives you. I think if you focus on moving yourself (try dropping your weight?) and make no effort to move them then you will discover that you aren't trapped.
Let us know how that works for you if you'd like. If it doesn't work post a photo or a short vid?
