Always use HTTPS and reroute http calls to https. 2. configure your EC2 instances to be behind the virtual private cloud. The ec2 instance should not be exposed to the outside.

I haven't seen your previous tutorials. But, I'm left wondering why you didn't configure the ELB for HTTPS and not HTTP?
Because HTTPS requires you to implement an SSL certificate, which is extra step that is out of the scope of this tutorial :)
