My brother and I were at the foot of this climb, in Bourg d'Oisans, in 1986 when the iconic Tour de France stage finished in Alpe d'Huez where Bernard Hinault and Greg Lemond crossed the line together. It was Hinault's last ever day in yellow. We watched the conclusion of the stage on a TV screen that was in an electrical shop window, and the image always stayed with me. Today I finally got to ride the climb, so thanks very much for that! I have to say, though, the ride today was a lot easier than it would have been in reality. Those hairpin bends go on forever!
Thank you for sharing your story. So happy you finally got to do the climb yourself. If you have a smart trainer or a power meter, you can also ride it as it was for real with our training software Open Road.
