I’ll be honest, when I saw this watch in video I didn’t like it. The compass made it look so busy. But when I saw it in a window at my local Seiko dealer I was amazed at how good it looks. It has something so elegant and yet adventurous. You know how if you hold a sea shell to your ear you can hear the sea? I bet if you do the same with this watch you can hear the alpine winds and the call of adventure.
Dear Peter, thank you. I so enjoyed your message which has me reflecting on my own goals and watch collecting strategy. You're a wise and genuine gentleman. All the best mate.
My first watch was a Timex test watch as a first grader in 1963. I grew up in Waterbury CT. I had to give it back after 1 year. I didn't break it or lose it. It was a Black "Zorro" Cowboy watch! Now I m 65, and I still like watches. Seiko especially!!
Great video! I realized fairly early in this hobby(sickness) that a more expensive watch wasn't necessarily going to make me happier, and chasing what is trending is likely going to lead to long term disappointment. So rather than chase a dream (BB58, SMP300, or Explorer 1), I decided to enjoy more variety in the affordable end of the spectrum. Now I have four Christopher Wards(C60, C60 Bronze, C65, and C63), a Hamilton(Cooper), a Damasko(DS30 Yellow), and a couple of microbrands(Vaer, Seagull, Heitis). I spend about the same as a single luxury watch, but now have watches for all moods and occasions. I'll never get the "likes" on social media a luxury brand would generate, but then again I'm not too into the
This is one of the absolute best watch vids on the net. You just said exactly what some people need to hear. And personally well done on the alpinist, the green version has been on my dream list since I very first started collecting.
It great to see that you evaluated where you are in your collection. The courage it took to sell the watches and start over is what many need to do. Well done.
Congrats on your punchase Peter :) . I have the Seiko alpinist spb117 and will never regret this purchase. Wish you a lot of happy moments with it. Wear it with pride :)
Pls enjoy as much as possible this new restart Bro, you deserve it ! This illness has no cure and I don’t wanna find it. This was a powerful one and I celebrate your shared wisdom. Efaristo!!! 🙏🏻
I've put an old school ladder style Bonklip bracelet on mine, it's lovely, confortable, bright and light, it makes a perfect evening watch for the blind old man i'm becoming, definitely a keeper.
Wow what a shocking move Peter. But do what you feel is right. Good thing about this hobby is you can always change how you do things. Time for an updated sotc video?
Quite right Peter, my collection is 10 watches including some quartz that I love and would never get rid of as it’s been half way around the world with me over the last 30 years. Love the Seiko and would consider owning one
Thank you Peter, I think what makes your channel special is your candidness and ability to let us into your world and experiences. As well just to speak frankly. We all have attachments and vices. I believe purging is cathartic maybe even ideal to have a limit...which I have found is very difficult to do. Also I want to mention how fortunate we are to be able to have a hobby like this and it is a privilege. The fact you were able to sell off some of your prize possessions I highly commend you. Thank you for sharing your journey. Just note I have the gold case spb 210 warm green dial. Its definitely a keeper. Cheers!
Peter, you have one of the best channels! Overall thoughtful that provides perspective rather than "look how much money I spent." Keep up the good work!
Excellently well said, I have the mountain glacier regular (not limited edition) and love it But BEWARE the “light” at the end of the watch collecting tunnel is lumibright!!!
Incredible video Peter. I purchased this watch as my first new watch after selling my complete collection, and with this one I started from scratch. 🙂 Such a beautiful piece. 👍🖖

Peter, always full of surprises. I love your philosophy but not sure I could just get rid of what I have collected over the years to start with a new collection. At least we know now that you will have plenty of content to share with us.
Hi Peter, I just got the standard SPB121 two days ago. My first impressions. It is a cool looking watch. I like just about everything about it. The one thing I was surprised is how small the 39mm watch feels, almost a tad too small. I also, have been underwhelmed by the lum level. I think the camera settings show it off much more than the eye can pick up, like my phone can take photos of the Northern Lights and stars that I can't see.
@@tonyxxx9463 very true Malachy, I never wore them anyway. I kept my Exciton because it's an original design and great quality and I see that one as more of a microbrand but the rest just got shuffled round the watch boxes and never worn. Have been doing plenty of research on the Alpinist over the past few months. Been on my radar for a long time but I couldn’t decide between this and the brown dialled variant. Between yourself, Random Rob and Jody pulled the trigger on the 119 this morning. While the brown is nice I think the shear number of strap options for the 119 makes this extremely versatile. Just didn’t sit well so now is paired with a blue rubber tropic strap and wears so much better. Think this will be a keeper.
Well, I have about 8 watches, and that's enough for me. I like to be comfortable with my watches and would never sell them. After all, I bought them because I felt a particular way when I bought them for myself. They have meaning, and I have an attachment to them, and I know the internal and external wear on them is all from me. They are mine and a part of me. And that's my enjoyment. But each to their own. Love this Peter. I understand what you mean;.. after watching a ton of positive reviews for the orient kamasu, I jumped at the offer of a green/teal jdm one recently. I even ordered a strapcode oyster at the same time knowing the bracelet standard. It arrived and I was admiring the sapphire crystal and general standard of finish. I now prefer to wear the inferior seiko snzh53 fifty fathoms 'homage'.. In every spec way it's less but I just connect with the thing! Kamasu for sale right here...
Hi Peter if you see this message I need your help. I'm going back and forth between this model and the brown version. Hey Peter, that was a great video. Also being so truthful about selling many of your luxury watches. As long as you get pleasure from your watches, that is all that counts. Follow your heart and select the watch that speaks to it. No matter how affordable or expensive. Take care! Cheers, Jack
Thanks Jack.. Yeah it was a little hard to let go of some of the pieces, but I am happy I did, as it has opened up fresh new ideas for me Thanks bro' Cheers
As usual Peter another informative, reflective and enjoyable video. I say a watch collection should be about "who we are" and not about "who we want to be." Why I most like your videos is a sense that "understatement often carries the day" and the importance of "a connection between watch and wearer". After all; it's not "how much" time we have, but "how well" we spend the time we have! Keep up the great videos!
I have the same watch on a different strap and agree 100%. Also I have the black dial Shark Tooth batons version. Also, The previous Alpinists SARB017 Emerald Green dial and the Limited Edition USA Hodinkee exclusive model blue dial SPB089 1959 pieces produced of the non cyclops Diashock 6R15 movement
Now thats some mental fortitude! I sense that some that departed might go the way of the Alpinist though. Something about setting free and being meant to be right? haha Great video!
Exactly! "It suits my personality"... that's the way of thinking we should have when purchasing anything .

Yeah it was a little hard to let go of some of the pieces, but I am happy I did, as it has opened up fresh new ideas for me
Thanks bro'
Cheers
LOVE THE INTRO. LOVE IT.
Cheers
I own three Alpinists. All keepers.
Great thoughts. Thanks
Thks for your frank insight. Cheers
Got this watch and love it! Great video.
Beautiful footage!!
Just another watchbox. I feel you.
Very nice Vid, Peter and so funny and true 😂. You’re so right in all your words.
Greetings from Germany ✌🏼
Thanks! 👍
Fantastic message.
Cheers
Wow. So well executed.
You are so correct we all have a problem
Nice vid. ! It is a wonderful watch.
The first, and most important, rule in collecting is buy what you like. Period. (This applies to collecting anything, not just watches.)
