same here... my old man always had us in bed by 9. but me and my brothers woukd sneak down at 10.30 to catch the footie highlights.....miss those days. 😪 still miss my old man.. rip keith...
Used to go to bed about 7 .30 as a kid stay awake till i heard this tune then go to top of the stairs and shout can i watch sportsnight they always said yes wont ever forget this tune
Same. One of those nights watching Sportsnight in 1990 my dad told me I had to support Man United like he has done since 1967. Still a United fan to this day.
Memories, I remember being allowed to sometimes stay up late to watch this show. It was great for British Boxing, Alan Minter,Charlie Magri, Maurice Hope etc appeared regularly No pay per view just great fights in smoke filled halls..
Watched it with my dear old dad aged 14-rip dad-you’d played football at a v high level/cricket/squash/tennis-loads of sports in fact. We’d watch this together as u supped a whisky n water at the end of the day-wish I could go back xx
Remember staying at my grandads to watch the greyhound tv trophy as he was recovering from cancer and had 2 runnersin the semi final 1 of which went through was beaten in the final by Minnie's siren . Great memories that theme tune brought back 👌
Great theme tune. So nostalgic. If whenever i heard it play, I knew it would have been way past my bed time and so wondered how I got away with staying up so late.
Very nostalgic. I used to ask my mum & dad if I could stay up and watch it, usually Notts Forest or Liverpool in the European cup in those days, late 70s early 80s.
Straight away the memories when I hear the theme tune come flooding back watching this program on a school night with my Dad who’s now not with us..quite sad
Awww great memories from my childhood As a Celtic man I loved Tommy Burns winner against insruck was in the opening theme and credits in 1978 , reminds of Wednesday nights feeling good only few days before weekend and Celtic game, me and my brothers watching any sports that were on tho was always a bonus if games were on , great days!
This music I associate with a heart thumping pride of knowing my team has got through to the next round of the cup and now my dad is gonna let me stay up and watch the highlights!!! Ahhhhhhh Yesterdayyyy!!!
Sat next to my dad with cup of hot chocolate because I wanted to see highlights of the England game from earlier . Good times sport on the bbc reached everyone
Mum they’ve got boxing on can I stay up? I’ll go upstairs, so Nick goes to sleep, but can I come back down? This theme brings back that conversation. Nick was my younger brother, it was just him my mum and me. I really liked Ali but any boxing was good. They might even show bits of the midweek football, at least results with foreign team names!
goodness this takes me to a time when sport wasnt influenced and ruined by money and big corperate companies. i used to love watching the footie and boxing on here. john conti, dave boy green, tony sibbo sibson and so on. good times and great intro music. thanks ATVmidlands
Surely the definitive version of Tony Hatch's original (which is actually a bit plodding). The "screamer" notes at the end are brilliant. Derek Watkins on trumpet at a guess....
Less is more, you only got to see the best bits, rather than like now, where a live football match could slog on for 91 minutes until a goal is scored.
Love "you tube", for trips down memory lane, used to go to my grannies on a wednesday, was only about 11 or 12, watched The Benny Hill show, then Sportsnight, remember great nights of action, Big Frank Bruno, Liverpool, West Brom, Spurs in Europe, great times
Ahhh the days when you kept away from the football scores to watch all the night football crammed in to about an hour and a half of exciting knock out football, away goals counting as double and all that
loool....what a tune. I'd almost forgot about this completely.......Couldn't wait for this to start on wednesday evenings, after listening to the football commentaries on the radio....Even better when the team you supported won, and you wanted to see the goals
still got a vid tape of my dads, with the 1973 greyhound final followed by carlisle v middlesboro in the 1st division from that night . stuart boam scored for boro!!!!!!
Yep - it was basically on after all the serious news programmes had ended. But it was just a relief to see something sporty in the middle of the week when even libraries observed half-day closing!!
Football has reached saturation point, you can't turn a tvon without the highlights of every premier league game that was played 24 hours previously. I loved Sportsnight, and got my dad to video it whatever match was on, as it was a novelty.
yeah great memories, what was a joke tho was that the titles always depicted, boxing, running, cricket, golf, motor racing, tennis, blah blah... they never ever, ever, ever showed any tennis!!! lol they didnt have any rights too lol what a theme tho!!! awesome!
Tony Hatch - composer of many a classic hit theme tune: Emmerdale, Crossroads, Neighbours, etc. He also wrote hit records like Downtown and Music to Watch Girls By.
Europesn Cup, European Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup matches from European clubs that used to be huge but no longer are because they are in the "wrong" league in the "wrong" country...FA Cup replays...League Cup matches...loads of boxing...Dave Boy Green, Alan Minter, Charlie Magri, Frank Bruno, "Know What I mean Harry", James Bonecrusher Smith...athletics, Steve Ovett, Seb Coe, Steve Elliot, Steve Cram, Fatima Whitbread...
The 70's version used to feature a big set of floodlights going around the screen....I normally bribed mum and dad with a cup of coffee and a tray of biccies so I could watch whatever was on !
amazing upload, todays young football fans wouldn't believe how annoying it was to want to see your teams highlights but have to weight until the ice skating from northampton or something simlar was over!!
If sport coverage was a hotel , Grandstand was the main Reception , Sports Night the cosy Lounge with a quiet bar and World of Sport the kids play area
Hey grandad, instead of watching the ice skating you could always read some Chomsky whilst you wait /weight/ wayte for another dazzling Eurpopean performance from the mighty Emlyn.....or was he gone by then? I dunno, and don't care I was watching Aunt Peg on Betamax videos instead
Best sports theme tune ever, Wednesday nights, memories.
Midweek Sports Special too
I loved Sportsnight - the theme tune was awesome
Love that. Brings back so many memories as a Liverpool fan growing up. Making sure you didn’t see the scores on the news
same here... my old man always had us in bed by 9. but me and my brothers woukd sneak down at 10.30 to catch the footie highlights.....miss those days. 😪 still miss my old man.. rip keith...
Just think back to all the tv programs you watched in the 70's - they all had one thing in common - Fooking great title music.
Used to go to bed about 7 .30 as a kid stay awake till i heard this tune then go to top of the stairs and shout can i watch sportsnight they always said yes wont ever forget this tune
Steven Gosling me too. Sometimes used to look at at the top of the stairs and just catch the TV in the corner. Often found there asleep I'm told!
Me too - top of stairs hoping I’d be let down lol
You lot must be born circa 1971 I was doing exactly the same 🤗
The same stairs guys???? 🤔
and i thought i was the only one
back in the good old days, how i miss them so much.
One of my favourite theme tunes EVER
Me and my dear late dad used to sit up and watch this when i was a kid, no wonder i was knackered the following day for school. lol.
Same here. Makes me miss my dad all the more.
MrPurser hahahahaha classic. Me too
Same. One of those nights watching Sportsnight in 1990 my dad told me I had to support Man United like he has done since 1967. Still a United fan to this day.
@@vantheman1238 me three...!!
This Theme Tune Takes Some Beating!.
Memories, I remember being allowed to sometimes stay up late to watch this show.

My favourite childhood memory ❤
Always reminds me of Forest being in Europe as a 9 year old kid. Great times 👏🏻
Remember staying at my grandads to watch the greyhound tv trophy as he was recovering from cancer and had 2 runnersin the semi final 1 of which went through was beaten in the final by Minnie's siren . Great memories that theme tune brought back 👌
Iconic
Great theme tune. So nostalgic. If whenever i heard it play, I knew it would have been way past my bed time and so wondered how I got away with staying up so late.
Is this the greatest theme tune ever? Probably!
Reminds me of being allowed to stay up later in the school holidays. Happy memories
Sir Duke! BBC boxing 70's slightly better
Football, boxing and skiing in one programme. That's more sport than the BBC broadcasts in a year now.
Really was the golden age of tv
No one stayed up for the skiing...
@@bazzabaz I did, Franz Klammer and all that.
Watching with my Dad, those days were the best!
I remember watching 5-a side football from the Gmex Centre Manchester. Charlton v West Ham.
As an 8 year old I had to be very well behaved to stay up and watch the first 30 minutes (usually football). Such a sound of my childhood.
Same 👍
Great stuff! Brings back great memories from when I was growing up - thanks for uploading.
Very nostalgic.
I used to ask my mum & dad if I could stay up and watch it, usually Notts Forest or Liverpool in the European cup in those days, late 70s early 80s.
RIP Harry, sorely missed.....:(
Oh my God, I can't believe somebody found this!
Straight away the memories when I hear the theme tune come flooding back watching this program on a school night with my Dad who’s now not with us..quite sad
So many memories.... theme is just so energetic and exhilarating, they don’t have that punch anymore, to these ears at least...

That's a great memory ❤
being allowed to stay up when my mum went out great tune
Was your mum a brass?
Mum they’ve got boxing on can I stay up?
I’ll go upstairs, so Nick goes to sleep, but can I come back down? This theme brings back that conversation.
Nick was my younger brother, it was just him my mum and me.
I really liked Ali but any boxing was good. They might even show bits of the midweek football, at least results with foreign team names!
Gosh I remember this from the early 80s
Put simply; I miss it terribly!
0:19 - 0:26 love that progression!
Remember hearing it when my dad had it on when I was tucked up in bed cause it was on about 10:30 at night during the week.
Rest in Peace Harry,....thanks for the memories
i remeber feelign very cosy late at night relaxing watching some (non hyped up) boxing or a european football match.
Everyone watched the same things people had more things in common to talk about the day after
Brilliant program back in the day with Harry
goodness this takes me to a time when sport wasnt influenced and ruined by money and big corperate companies. i used to love watching the footie and boxing on here. john conti, dave boy green, tony sibbo sibson and so on. good times and great intro music.
thanks

A Gentleman and scholar .. who was the best that no money could buy who did a job that made him the legend that became and forever Immortalised
Surely the definitive version of Tony Hatch's original (which is actually a bit plodding). The "screamer" notes at the end are brilliant. Derek Watkins on trumpet at a guess....
Football, boxing and skiing, that's some triathlon they've got going there...
Nowadays the only sport BBC have the rights to is triathlon.
Corking theme fast movin
Less is more, you only got to see the best bits, rather than like now, where a live football match could slog on for 91 minutes until a goal is scored.
Part of my childhood, into early adolescence.
...... As soon as you heard the theme start..... You knew it was time for bed for school in the morning....
Another classic theme! :D
When my parents would let me stay up late , this tune really got me excited. Rangers v PSV comes to mind!
Ah yes, football, boxing...greyhound racing...memories indeed!
Ahhh the days when you kept away from the football scores to watch all the night football crammed in to about an hour and a half of exciting knock out football, away goals counting as double and all that
RIP Harry, a proper gent
loool....what a tune. I'd almost forgot about this completely.......Couldn't wait for this to start on wednesday evenings, after listening to the football commentaries on the radio....Even better when the team you supported won, and you wanted to see the goals
Fantastic theme tune ..Best ever .
Nice one Carhandle.
Boxing from the Albert Hall, and the Greyhound derby was always shown. Brilliant.
the good old days, or should i say nights
still got a vid tape of my dads, with the 1973 greyhound final followed by carlisle v middlesboro in the 1st division from that night . stuart boam scored for boro!!!!!!
Yep - it was basically on after all the serious news programmes had ended. But it was just a relief to see something sporty in the middle of the week when even libraries observed half-day closing!!
This tune should replace 'God save the queen' as the national anthem.....
Football has reached saturation point, you can't turn a tvon without the highlights of every premier league game that was played 24 hours previously. I loved Sportsnight, and got my dad to video it whatever match was on, as it was a novelty.
One of the best!!
yeah great memories, what was a joke tho was that the titles always depicted, boxing, running, cricket, golf, motor racing, tennis, blah blah... they never ever, ever, ever showed any tennis!!! lol they didnt have any rights too lol what a theme tho!!! awesome!
Tony Hatch - composer of many a classic hit theme tune: Emmerdale, Crossroads, Neighbours, etc. He also wrote hit records like Downtown and Music to Watch Girls By.
Reminds me of nervously waiting for the footie results.
Those were the days !!!
Good night, Harry. Rest Well.
This was when you were a kid you got your parents to tape the programme on a school night so you could watch it the next day
Great theme tune, Harry top presenter
the opening music made the show
Football boxing and skiing. All the major food groups covered.
And snooker also..😊
Europesn Cup, European Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup matches from European clubs that used to be huge but no longer are because they are in the "wrong" league in the "wrong" country...FA Cup replays...League Cup matches...loads of boxing...Dave Boy Green, Alan Minter, Charlie Magri, Frank Bruno, "Know What I mean Harry", James Bonecrusher Smith...athletics, Steve Ovett, Seb Coe, Steve Elliot, Steve Cram, Fatima Whitbread...
Sportsnight ran from 1968 until 1997
The 70's version used to feature a big set of floodlights going around the screen....I normally bribed mum and dad with a cup of coffee and a tray of biccies so I could watch whatever was on !
TONY HATCH WAS IT? ALSO WROTE THE THEME TUNE FOR CROSSROADS AND NEIGHBOURS.AND DOWNTOWN1966(PETULA CLARK) MUST BE A BRILLIANT SONGWRITER!
Theme music composed by Tony Hatch who also wrote Neighbours, The Champions and Emmerdale Farm theme songs
amazing upload, todays young football fans wouldn't believe how annoying it was to want to see your teams highlights but have to weight until the ice skating from northampton or something simlar was over!!
Rest in peace, Harry
Used to shown on a Wed Night bout 1030ish?
This was on when I was sent to bed
Sadly axed in 1998 when the BBC realised there wasn't enough sport to show on it, except snooker.
Good old memories
Derek Watkins "screamer" note on the trumpet right at the end.
R.I.P. Harry.
Some theme tunes back in the day!
I personally think grandstand was the best?
they don't make theme tunes like this anymore
Sounds of BBC theme tunes of the day. Xylophone, and brass players after a pot of caffeine.
I remember the libraries half day closing..... en all must be showing my age.
Thrash xylophone rocks man.
Up there with Big Fight Live theme
where can you get this version from? The theme commercially available of this is a different arrangement.
For me it was all about asking the parents if I could be allowed to stay up and watch the European midweek games!
if anyone has livrpool v leeds fairs cup highlights would appreciate,i remember watcing the anfield tie on sportsnight 1971
me too mate uncanny
Very similar to The Two Ronnies...just a bit quicker .This and Grandstand have to be the 2 best sports themes ever!
