I miss it too, it was one of my favorites. I’m 1/2 Jewish and grew up in a rural area in south. I loved watching her and her husband raising their children in a similar situation.
OK - i made this. I watched the video like 3x b/c I could not find recipe. Comfort food! Of course, like all recipe reviews on the internet, I have my suggestions. 1. someone commented their potatoes were still raw. I used russets, I microwaved them flat on a plate after I sliced them for 4 min to start the cooking process a bit. 2. This needs a lot of seasoning and none was mentioned - I added lots of black pepper and salt. I still think it needs one more seasoning of some king. 3. I got the cream of mushroom soup w/ the garlic b/c I had a feeling it would need more seasoning. I used 1 whole yellow onion, 2 ribs celery chopped, 1.5 lbs ground beef, 1 can cheese soup, 1 can cream of mushroom w/ garlic soup. about 4 russet potatoes, and 3/4 head green cabbage sliced into wide ribbons
I finally made this! And it is absolutely as wonderful as Vivian described! You've got to love old time comfort food/ recipes. Thank you for sharing this on your show!
I have been watching shows looking for some recipes, especially a cabbage caserole and some desserts etc. Last night I dreamed I was at a huge family reunion with lots and lots of relatives who have been gone a long time. I am 71. It was the most wonderful dream. In the past it was like everyone brought their best. My grandma was famous for her caramel cake and my granny for her fried corn. Wonderful memories.
I love this casserole and have made it so much since I first saw this episode a few years ago.. I put my own twists to it like I don't peel the taters and in a pinch instead of cabbage I use slaw mix or broccoli slaw in the bottom layer and I use cream of mushroom soup and shred a block of good Cheddar cheese to the meat mixture.. Yum!! PS.. I miss this TV show and Chef Vivian
I hardly ever make casseroles, but I was so moved by this episode. There was something comforting about it in this crazy world we live in. I made it last night, on a snowy soggy day in CT..and ate it by the fire with a glass of Pinot. It's not fancy by any means, but that's the point....it just feels good and it's oh so yummy! The only thing I did was to salt the layer of potatoes a bit...gotta have some flavour up in there. It was so good, I'm eating leftovers right now for my breakfast! I love Mrs. Howard...can't wait to visit her restaurants in NC one day!
I really miss her. She would make a fantastic friend. Vivian is relatable to people, talented , interesting, down to earth, comfortable with exactly who she is , very innovative! Marrying traditional Southern comfort food, with different texture, temperature's and flavor mashups that make you want to try it. I hope shes doing wonderfully and crossed finger's she comes back with a new show, because shes a breathe of fresh air and would be incredibly well received here in 2024. I wish she would do another show, she would be incredibly successful and SO incredibly popular right now.
This is the best cabbage casserole recipe on you tube. And the best recipe video ever! I love every second of it. The love and respect demonstrated here really moved me.🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️
I just tried this tonight. Made a smaller casserole, for about 3 people, just by estimating amounts. It is WONDERFUL! Cabbage completely melts into the dish so you wouldn’t even know it’s there. Sprinkled some fried onions on the top for the last 10 minutes. Probably not the healthiest fare but a definite treat on a chilly September evening.
Hi! I made this casserole for my daughter and her husband. They LOVED it and so do I ! I have gotten to know you and your family by watching your videos and recognize the God given gifts and talents you have. I thank God for the prayers and support your Christian parents have given you❤️ P.S. I want your cookbook really bad!
I adore Vivian and the show. I love the fact that Vivian calls her Miss Daisy, out of respect. I find this is more than a show about cooking, it is about family and friends also.
I grew to being told all adults are miss, mizz, Mrs or Mr. We were never allowed to go by first name to adults. Now I'm 45 and mostly is still the and, a few tried the first name but it's not common. I'm from Michigan not the south, but it was a rural community
I love this show....Chef Vivian and her gracious Southern guests never fail to remind me that there are good G-D fearing people left in this world. This show is like a tall cold glass of iced tea on a hot afternoon. G-D bless Chef Vivian and her delightful family. :-D
madhavyu Look into "simulation theory." Read Anthony Flew's book, There is a GOD. You're a person of faith just like me. I put my faith in a book that has never been proven wrong...the Bible. You put your faith in Darwin. He made his theory when sailing ships ruled the seas. He didn't know about DNA. The Bible is the only book that dares to make prophecy. That is what sets it apart. No other book contains accurate prophecy. I hope you find your WAY.
I love the shiny and beautiful braising pan and I'd need only one with a glass lid. It's best for really small spaces where a standard length handle becomes a nuisance, plus the pan can still go into the oven.
They did cut the camera too much. From the looks of it, she also put in diced bell pepper but then mentioned celery was also added to the sauteed onions so, I would use all three. I would probably use both cheese soup and mushroom soup since all that moisture would be needed to soften the potatoes and cabbage underneath.
I could've sworn she said to add the celery and onions to the ground chuck, but at the beginning of the video, she tells her to chop the onion and the pepper.
So sad... I got the ingredients and made this tonight. I baked it in an almost identical size dish, at 350, for "50 mins covered, then 10 mins uncovered", but my potatoes and cabbage were not done! I cut the cabbage just like you did, and my potato slices were thin and single-layer. We ate it anyway, and we could tell the overall flavor would be marvelous, but I don't understand why the potatoes and cabbage didn't get done. As I said, we could tell it's good, so I just put the rest back in the oven for another 30 mins. (I'm determined!) Any idea what I did wrong?
I would just wash the red potatoes leave skins on,cut off any bad parts, slice them thin, add a little more cheese to top,as I love cheese, especially sharp type.I wonder could red cabbage work?
Love you, NC local. Farm to raise is the essential way. I do wish that you're Wilmington restaurant was the same way. Pizza? Please no disrespect please contact me back.
I mean , you’re not Bobby Flay and you’re not Gordon Ramsey!! I’ve seen you be hateful with your staff so I’m not understanding and don’t support you even though I’m a native North Carolinian!!! Please get back to your roots girl !!!
A chef's life is the most nostalgic, heart-warming show that I think i've ever watched. I miss it terribly.

Love that Vivian looked for her casserole dish 💜

I’ve made it a bunch of times, too. It’s amazing ❤️ I add mushrooms and real cheddar hits, for sure

I just add a little bacon, because everything's better with bacon
No truer words spoken.

I love what this show. This episode was especially good because the meal you made a the true love in it.
Hi Vivian. I have missed you. So glad I found this on TH-cam. Loved your show.
Blessings to all. 💞

I've made this several times now, couldn't find the cooking time...so I came back to find it. 350° for 50 minutes covered, 10 minutes uncovered.
I can't recall when I've seen cheddar cheese soup on the shelf. God bless
I adore Vivian and the show. I love the fact that Vivian calls her Miss Daisy, out of respect. I find this is more than a show about cooking, it is about family and friends also.
Exactly, Ms. Vivian is not your average food/chef personality.
Calling her Ms. Vivian even though I am 16 years her elder. Just because... 😼

yes I love this show. amen
"God fearing people" - LOL. Thankfully none of this vindictive, invisible man in the sky nonsense is injected into the show.
madhavyu Look into "simulation theory." Read Anthony Flew's book, There is a GOD. You're a person of faith just like me. I put my faith in a book that has never been proven wrong...the Bible. Every year less and less people are believing in the invisible man in the sky. You will get there someday.
madhavyu... amen to that. ( but i DO believe in the deep love of a casserole!)
Vivian is great.
I, too, am a fan..does anyone have the beef and cabbage casserole from the homecoming episode? If so please share...
I miss this show. I have seen I believe every show or episode. Where is Viv now?
LOVE THIS RECIPE!! Definitely will be a regular meal! Thank you for sgaring.
I love the shiny and beautiful braising pan and I'd need only one with a glass lid. It's best for really small spaces where a standard length handle becomes a nuisance, plus the pan can still go into the oven.
My favorite show
Did she put the mushroom soup in? I heard her say it, just saw the cheese soup. Looks good,
They did cut the camera too much. From the looks of it, she also put in diced bell pepper but then mentioned celery was also added to the sauteed onions so, I would use all three. I would probably use both cheese soup and mushroom soup since all that moisture would be needed to soften the potatoes and cabbage underneath.
Love your videos, Vivian!!
It’s the simplest things that are the best 🙂
I could've sworn she said to add the celery and onions to the ground chuck, but at the beginning of the video, she tells her to chop the onion and the pepper.
Question...can get it all ready the day before and cook it on the day of my dinner?
Yes just bake it 20-30 minutes longer
So sad... I got the ingredients and made this tonight. I baked it in an almost identical size dish, at 350, for "50 mins covered, then 10 mins uncovered", but my potatoes and cabbage were not done! The same thing happened to me!! I can't figure out what I did wrong!
I prefer videos where they list the ingredients and measurements. It is better on time spent watching.
was it bell pepper or celery. she mentioned both...
What kind of dish you use because I seen that you didn't use oven mitts it must be very new
avelina cassis they had one ready...they made it before filming so by then it was not hot
I would just wash the red potatoes leave skins on,cut off any bad parts, slice them thin, add a little more cheese to top,as I love cheese, especially sharp type.I wonder could red cabbage work?
Ok she said add the onion and celery . I didn't see celery. I saw onion and bell pepper. Which is it ?
awesome! thank you so much!

I am so cooking this 💙

What would be a carb friendly alternative to the potatoes?
Maybe try some cauliflower?
Love you, NC local. Farm to raise is the essential way. I do wish that you're Wilmington restaurant was the same way. Pizza? Please no disrespect please contact me back.
Why do these posts last forever? Please, just the facts! Only the facts!
Can't wait to try it with kielbasa & more veggies, for me ground beef is like eating sand paper, maybe ground Turkey or chicken. time will tell...

No. Guys would eat this, I won't
No
I guess they cant cook without Campbells Soup? Really. This is cooking from the1950's!
There was also a well know saying back then. "If u don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all".
