    Nice. Hornby seem to view wagons as an afterthought for their Era 1 models, which is a shame - goods trains were a far higher priority than passenger trains.

    • @ianjeffery6744

      Ironically, Lion and Tiger were intended as goods engines! Come on, Rapido - how about a generic Sharp, Stewart or Stephenson passenger 2-2-2, with some slightly more modern (1840) coaches to match? Sam has shown the way to do it!

    Hey Sam, well, what can I say, the effort you have put in to this project is incredible, the attention to detail and all the possibles regarding the multiple coupling methods deserve a big thumbs up.
    Your thought process shows what can be achieved, if only Hornby could show the same presence of mind when designing and delivering models.
    Please do consider a future production, unfortunately I missed out this time around.
    Not sure if you've considered packaging and graphics, like Dapol for example. Yes it would bump up the cost a little more but it would look superb; Sam's Trains graphics, and last of all, certificate of authenticity! Lol. 😉👍🏻🚂😊

    Lovely work Sam. We've been pondering about where Stephenson got the tender for Rocket. It seems to us that he evidently did not build it from scratch but simply modified something existing because that's how it exactly looks. At the time there were literally thousands of mines, quarries and tonnes of different goods transport in the UK of all sorts and mostly using horse-drawn cart designs undocumented... So, who knows...

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes! He did modify a coal wagon to make the tender, but it's not clear exactly what modifications were made

      @@lindaoffenbacht’s still pretty lazy of Hornby to just reuse the tooling and just get rid of a barrel and add an end piece though. And if we have no idea what these wagons were like, it is better to use something with blueprints. That’s just my opinion though of course.

    • @lindaoffenbach
      @lindaoffenbach ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@modelrailfan37 Depends on personal view of course. When it is highly plausible that the wagons did exist with minimum of modification (no barrel and with closed front) then why not. It is also more than very clear that the frame is made for the wheels fitted. Not sure if they were actually coal carts (I don't think so). Transporting something like roof slates (brittle) seems much more plausible. The overall dimensions and its larger wheels (for a less bumpy ride) make it a perfect match, and such carts looked like that. Anyway, it saves on tooling as H isn't exactly swimming in money atm, and one can simply imagine the existence of those... Not that we are fans of H though. Their overall quality isn't up to much, and Sam's addition providing for more choice is lovely!

    as an American that enjoys British rolling stock it would be nice to have an alternate adapter car using an American car
    as of now the only options i am aware of are kadee nubmer 17, 18, and 19 couplers which are knuckle couplers with a NEM end
    i think it would be a fairly simple task to swap the NEM end with a bachmann ezmate stlye end or just the loop which could be used with kadee springs from thier number 5, 2 part couplers

    The funniest thing about the Hornby “coal wagons” is that they are now selling them individually for £20 on their website. Whereas from Locomotion models you can but a single, exclusive edition, Accuascale S&DR Chaldron wagon for the same price! A vastly superior model for the same price, and thats factoring in Locomotion Models’ insane prices. Heck, even a normal 3 pack of chaldrons is only £45. For just over £10 more you can get a great rake of 6 realistic accurascale wagons vs nearly £80 for three Hornby rocket tenders. Crazy.

    Well done. Pity I am only 21 hours late watching this as I would like a few sets. One thing though these are from a drawing for the L & M , as the railways expanded the wagons used would at first be the horse drawn tubs and wagons made for specific coal mine companies but with iron and later steel wheels. Possibly from a local builder of farm or road transport designs. A lot of farm wagons are of a specific design to a area of the Uk, some times a county but can be a region within a county. So until the railways became organised there is a multitude of designs of wagons era 1. Your wagons are very like the later wagons from the mid 1950's on, in Germany with there door to door (Von Haus Zu Haus) container system. Where the container could be a tank (Beer or chemicals), a box (bulk products, dust), a sphere (cement) or an open box (coal, minerals,, etc.,)

    Excellent, 3 sets ordered! And I noticed that you had already sold over 50. Very well done!
    Suggestion: L&MR general merchandise flatbed wagons.
    Aside from slightly longer wheelbase livestock wagons, most of the L&MR merchandise wagons in the early 1830s seem to have been short wheelbase flatbeds, with an essentially similar chassis to the one you have developed for the coal wagons. These flatbeds appear to have had a deck raised above the wheels. See the various iterations of the Ackermann prints for whole trains of these. It seems to me your chassis would be ideal as the basis for these wagons.
    These would be far far better for L&M goods stock than Hornby's cheeky and over-priced recycling of their carriage model chassis with which they purport to represent these short little flatbed wagons, which they do not resemble in the slightest.
    For accessories, you might consider loads, e.g. barrels (say 1 load) or, most commonly, various shapes concealed by tarpaulins (the other two loads).

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks James - order received with many thanks! Flat beds are the plan next - and I've been trying to think of a suitable load for them... barrels sounds like a very good call, leave it with me!

      Was going to scratch-build the goods wagons, as there is really nothing suitable in the Hornby range, but with such an accurate and free-rolling chassis, I would much prefer to see you do these.

    About the price of the Hornby ones, they makes looks the Rapido plankers at GBP30 each a reasonable priced item...
    In my opinion, there is a wide avenue ahead for 3D printed era 1 rolling stock. Small, simple, original, and beautiful. I'm really considering doing some continental models of mine for this era in HO, I have many ideas from the region where I live, Saint-Étienne à la Loire of 1828, Saint-Étienne à Lyon of 1840, Alès-La Grande Combe of 1840, or many more... Hi Sam.
    Yes, please. Another batch would be great. If you could make them all the accurate "double hopper" version, that would be even better.
    I can't quote my sources but, as I remember, these were introduced by the L&M as an early attempt at containerised transport and didn't last too long. As a novel and potentially money- saving development these are well- documented and you are to be thanked for producing a great model based on original sources (unlike the replica 2nd Class coaches produced by the NRM (?) and modelled by Hornby which should have bench seats).
    I also really can't quote my sources about the Hornby style coal wagons and there aren't any original drawings but somewhere I have a reputable written source which says Rocket's (well- documented) tender was adapted from a spoil/ ballast waggon already on use on the L&M (Hauled presumably by Rocket and Twin Sisters during construction work.)
    The fact that Twin Sisters, Rocket AND Sans Pareil are all shown in contemporary drawings with identical tenders would tend to back this up. It's a shame that nobody ever bothered to draw Lancashire Witch's tender or any views of the ballast waggons.
    When I triumphantly find the sources, I'll post them up here...
    Also, I must go on You Tube more often. Once every couple of months clearly isn't often enough.
    thanks for the Good Stuff

    Thinning about rolling resistance on them hornby 'wagons' I suppose in real life they'd be built rough and ready so free running would be non existent but it definitely helps in model form! I do like your wagons here they look lovely

    With your NEM coupler pockets can you do me a favour and plug in the tt120 couplers (well, the tillig couplers...)?
    Just rewatching with them cruising around your layout and genuinely a joyous sight. Amazing job

    Hi Sam.
    Congratulations, you have outshone Hornby.
    I am tempted to purchase a rake but first, I have a couple of questions for you which are:
    1) I have 2 x L & Y 0-4-0ST pugs, Hornby R150, and Dapol D10-LN so, would a rake of your wagons look out of place attached to them?
    2) I would be tempted to weather them by painting them with acrylic matt black so would that be in line with the original colour scheme of the prototypes?
    Many thanks,
    Paul.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much Paul! I can say that with the NEM tension lock fitted, these should be able to couple up to your pugs and your B12, though the wagons may be out of place hauled by those as they're much earlier and from the L&MR, though I'm not sure where else they ran! Yes you could absolutely repaint these - the bodies are screwed on and can be easily removed. I'd recommend applying some primer first to make the paint adhere well. The screws are self tapping (I know, sorry) so do be careful re-tightening them... they just need to be finger tight!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    Hi Sam
    Great job I love that you made them compatible with other loco's & rolling stock. I think since NEM has been around for a while now all model railway brands should make there products compatible for NEM.
    I'm definitely getting one or two :)
    Also love these 3D printed projects that you complete very inspiring, makes me actually want to finish the projects I start ;).
    keep up the good work Sam looking forward to the next video.

      Thank you very much! I think most of them do usually, it's just the small size of the era 1 wagons that makes it difficult... but I think this solution is the best of both worlds. Really appreciate your kind words and support,

    Hi Sam, I watch most of your reviews and really rely on your comments, which I believe are pretty well unbiased. I have just watched the video of your Era 1 coal wagons and was more than impressed. Of course, when I went to Etsy, they were sold out. I would really like to purchase two sets of your wagon which I would be putting behind my Rapido 'Lion'. How would I be able to get hold of these? 17:03

    Sooo tempted to pick some up, but they don’t really go with what I model. They are really cool though, and they are much better than the rubbishy god awful Hornby ones. You should try doing the same thing with the Flatbeds and (depending on how Hornby’s turn out) the Sheep and Horse wagons.

    Have you tried printing them in resin rather than PLA, wouldn't have the layer lines then

  • @rjc0234
    @rjc0234 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think you could really benefit from a resin 3D printer. While they are slower to print a single wagon vs a single wagon on FDM, printing multiple takes no extra time. Increased detail will be a winner!

  • @piers995

    They look just the ticket and funny how you, on your own have made it possible to match with all other nem compatable couplings and Hornby's era one exclusive couplings, when the latter had not thought to or chose not to do so. Better get your couplings and wagons patented quick before someone copies them. Excuse me I'm going to sneeze "Titfield!" 🙂

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha thanks very much Piers - patenting stuff like this is virtually impossible, and a ridiculous amount of work... I'd be quite happy to have it copied and used in other models if it makes things better for modellers!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    Just a thought but you could do a Stephenson's Rocket with a bit more power to it.

    • @ianjeffery6744
      @ianjeffery6744 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rocket only lasted a very short time in its 1829 condition, and was soon rebuilt (much lower cylinders, inter alia), losing its gaudy yellow livery. An authentic 1830s - 1840s layout would need some passenger 2-2-2s, and some Planet-type 2-2-0s, with maybe a Stephenson long boiler 0-6-0 for freight - a challenge for Rapido, if their Lion takes off!
