Having watched this when it first came out back in the 80's, I was taken away with it. I absolutely adore this movie. Carol Burnette was ''THE" comedian of my childhood, and I can't find a single individual who can play Ms Hannigan better than she can. Annie was spot on in this. I like that they took it away from the Christmas angle. It looks far better, (Really reflects the 1930's EXTREMELY well---as most oprhanages back then wouldn't have four or five children, they'd be packed like the one shown in this movie)The musical numbers were spot on, the characters were spot on. I just can't see a single issue with this. Thanks for the video though love. :)
At 5:45, Miss Hannigan is making gin in her bathtub, which was common during the 20s and early 30s because there was a little thing happening in America at the time called Prohibition. Back then, if you wanted alcohol, you had to get it yourself by illegal methods or make it yourself at home.
This was actually the first musical I ever loved and what got me into musical theater. I really don't understand how someone couldn't like it!!!! I have so much love for Annie
6:18 I mean… he said he hated it and earlier asked why he should care (first scene with other characters is Annie comforting a crying child who is even younger than she is while another older girl is more realistic… I wanted to see Annie proven right so the youngest girl would have hope to continue on, but I guess nobody *HAS* to care about them and at the same time that’s kind of the point sooo…) I just think if he went into this with a more open mind he could have seen the ‘cleaning dancing’ for what it was, labor. Children being coerced with threat of violence to perform adult tasks goof off and are inefficient (jumping on made beds, mocking their abuser for catharsis) while the adults working seem to be performing for fun or almost out of leisure, they all seem well paid and complete their work in record speeds because of it. It seems almost effortless to Annie because the tasks are all delegated out to adults instead of her having to pick up everyone’s slack and take abuse for others (she bossed other girls around in the name of preventing their abuser from coming back up more than necessary, messed up thing for a little kid to be keeping a keen eye out for) I know he likes musicals or whatever but the original source for this isn’t the comic. It’s an 1885 poem about a REAL girl who was orphaned and did have to provide labor (physical and emotional, she cleaned and cared for children in the home she was hired out to by her uncle) Mary Alice Smith Gray… if he doesn’t care about the toned down easy to digest version of her life story then I guess he should also never look into how bleak things are currently for children in “the system” and their chances at a good life according to the statistics (mental illness, homelessness, substance addiction, poverty rates) maybe he wouldn’t care about that either unless it’s packaged prettily enough for him
+Wyatt Farr She's the one thing about this movie I remember from watching it in my 4th grade music class, particularly the song "Little Girls" where she makes gin in her bathtub.
Annie is not a good film but for some reason I still enjoy in. Nostalgia is probably clouding my vision but I do like watching this film. I like the songs more than anything.
The stage version of Annie is much better than the 1980s movie version. By the way, Annie does tell us right from the beginning what she wants. The song "Maybe" comes right at the beginning of the show, and Annie makes it very clear in that number that she "knows" her parents are somewhere out there, and she wants them to come and take her away from the orphanage. Everything she does is predicated on her desire to 1) have her parents back and 2) get out of the orphanage. It's unfortunate that this film version made a fiasco of the stage version.
Well I just saw a traveling stage version. It sucked too. In a weird, barren staged, SNL Annie parody type of way. Yuck. Glad to confirm that it's not just me that dislikes this musical.
This was my favorite musical as a child, I was obsessed. And like I realize that it's not the greatest musical ever made, but it will never be spoiled for me due to pure nostalgia. That being said, this video is making me laugh so hard
KIKA ALEGRIA I still haven't seen it! So, is it like "bad" as in "you'll really just feel uncomfortable" bad or "bad" as in "so terribly awful that you can't help but laugh" bad?
They sucked the heart out of "Annie" remixed the story in a bad way. Threw out characters and songs it was uncomfortable to watch . I left angry , Annie fist at Will & Jada Jay-Z they need to stay out of the musical business . The little girl really could have been great with the original material untouched .
Musical Theatre Mash Don't even bother watching it. I never did and never will. I heard about 10 seconds of Cameron Diaz singing Little Girls on TH-cam before the movie came out and I wanted to vomit! Just pretend that 2014 film doesn't exist. I do.
This version is honestly really special to me tbh. It was my first exposure to non-animated Disney musicals and I was obsessed with it as a little kid. No one will ever be a better Miss Hannigan than Carol Burnette in my opinion.
My favourite part of this movie is when FDR is like "SOLO FOR THE PRESIDENT" because as a history major, I can tell you that that line is 100% something FDR would have said
If I recall the stage musical correctly, Annie's "I want" song ("Maybe") was in the first scene. I didn't see the movie, so I have no idea where it was in the movie!
Annie was the first musical I ever saw.it was what started the flame in my heart that burns for musicals. Inhave passed on that love to my daughter who is currently obsessed with Hamilton.
Methinks you'd hate the 1999 TV movie version less. It strips the guff from this version and just tells the base plot with actual character motivations.
I have been binge watching your channel and I find it immensely entertaining and informative. This vid especially made my day. I will now sleep safer knowing that Orphan Fists protect our great country from horrible economic crises.
No one under 16 should sing in a musical, you say? Hey, I want you to check something out for me. It's called 13 The Musical. I think you'll really enjoy it.
While I really enjoy this movie, I can't really defend it and thus find this video hilarious. One thing I will defend, though: You say Annie's motivation doesn't show up till over an hour into the story. That's actually not true. Her introductory scene, "Maybe," is a flat-out "I Want" song and tells you what you need to know about this character. I'll give you, though, that they've should've brought it up periodically during that first hour.
the choreography in the movie version of "hard knock life" make me upset because they are sliding down banisters and having pillow fights. that does not look like a hard knock life.
I LOVED Annie when I was a kid. There was a version from ABC I think that I remember vividly but no one else does. I think it's shorter and gets to the finding her parents part sooner. I thoroughly enjoyed your reactions!
In teacher training they literally tell you not to get involved in girl fights because they don’t care, whereas boys will break apart as soon as they lose eye contact pretty much
That ghastly "Let's Go to the Movies" number was written specifically for the film, presumably as a pitch for Hollywood. It replaced a better song about NYC. Either way, it does nothing to advance the story. So much wasted talent: Carol Burnett, and for pity's sake, John Huston.
Okay this legit pisses me off. He criticizes choreography and creative dialogue for being not “realistic” or “purposeful”. The point of Annie is a fun, light hearted musical. Not every musical has to be intense and deep. There are just some musicals out there to have fun with.
You might want to check out the 1999 made for TV version of Annie that aired on ABC. This was Rob Marshall's first directing job plus he did the choreography. It stars Victor Garber and Audra McDonald as Daddy Warbucks and his assistant Grace, with Alicia Morton as Annie. This version is closer to the original Broadway production. It also brings back the original song and dance number "NYC" that was not used in the 1982 film and was replaced with "Let's Go To The Movies."
I know I'm late and I love your videos but I thought you said Into the Woods is one of your favourite musicals and that has Little Red Riding Hood who sings many songs. She is under 16. Same with Sound of Music, Les Miserables, 13, Oliver, Secret Garden, The Wizard of Oz, etc.
let's go to the movies was written for the 1982 film just to waste time and add another song seeing they took out the song NYC. basically lets go to the movies is to Annie as little lamb is to gypsy, or there's no business like show business is to Annie get your gun
+John Robledo I ask because, a.) I'm not a fan of this movie, either. And b.) I do LOVE the stage musical and the 1999 film (with Kathy Bates as Miss Hannigan) very much. (If you don't, that's fine, obviously, I'm just curious and a bit confused.)
I mean, to me it's all fine, it's a good musical (minus the weird sub-plot of the rest of her friends? Who she presumably never sees again?), it's the character Annie, it's the whiny voice, even in the 2014 version (I have never seen it live, but I do assume that it's still true for them too), and the almost "I deserve" vibe I get. Like in "It's a Hard-Knock Life", it seems very "I deserve to be treated better than the rest of you", at least to me
You missed a reference to a musical you'd rather be watching at 5:04, unless that's not the child catcher from Chitty but rather Angelica Houston in Witches
“And the actress the plays Annie can actually sing” Aileen could sing, she wasn’t the perfect singer but she had times where she sang beautifully. That girl received so much hate as Annie. If you have nothing nice to say then shut your mouth. That was very rude. I admit she wasn’t perfect but there’s way worse people out there.
This movie was made for the 3-12 year set! My younger sisters saw it when they were ten and loved it. It is still considered the gold standard that other versions have to live up to! Is it cheesy? Yes! Does it have flaws? Yes! Does it make kids happy? Yes! And making kids happy and not adults is what is important! I'm still giving this musical two thumbs up! Sugar is good in high doses!
pretty sure I could receite this move off the top of my head, along with mary poppins and the sound of music. i had a really specific sheltered childhood.
Orphan Fists and nasal high-pitched singing. Little Orphan Annie is abducted by the Guardians of the Galaxy and joins their fight to restore order and justice to the world. Also tries to convince them not to steal things, but is shut up every time.
This movie sucks, the 2014 movie REALLY sucks....the Disney version comes closest to the Broadway version which does NOT suck, especially if you are talking OBC. Andrea McArdle for the win!
I want to see you watch the 1999 Annie with Audra Macdonald and Andrea McArdle and Victor Garber and fucking Kathy Bates hecking that's the right Annie movie to see
I like the 81 film much better than the stage musical. But, I was three when it came out and had a record of the music, which I listened to over and over again. I know it's a generational thing. OMG 1:59 hilarious
I love the 1982 movie better than the Broadway musical too. It’s so faithful to Little Orphan Annie (The actual, actual original source material that I LOVE) and I really love that. I’ve never really been a HUGE fan of the original musical. I do like some things about it but the fans of it is toxic and I don’t “love” it.
Note worthy point: They had ventriloquists on the radio "back in the day' so that was historically accurate. In the UK they had a radio show called Educating Archie and the vent's lips moved!!! I believe that his first appearance on TV killed his career.... From Wikipedia..... "Educating Archie was a BBC Light Programme comedy show broadcast from June 1950 to February 1958 on Sunday lunchtimes featuring ventriloquist Peter Brough and his doll Archie Andrews. The programme was popular despite a ventriloquist act on radio seeming quite illogical. Educating Archie averaged 15 million listeners, and a fan club boasted 250,000 members. It was so successful that in 1950, after only four months on the air, it won the Daily Mail 's Variety Award."
Not gonna lie. I LOVE this movie. Besides Disney it was the first musical I was exposed to and enjoyed. And when I was little it was one of the few movies that starred a regular kid like myself. Growing up with this movie I see it with rose colored glasses. Most of your critics just made me laugh and honestly made me like the movie a little bit more. He figures it out later when Daddy WarBucks is trying to get Ms Hannigan to sign something
Never get caught in a orphan fight; They have nothing to lose!
This was actually the first musical I ever loved and what got me into musical theater. I really don't understand how someone couldn't like it!!!! I have so much love for Annie
The "I Want" song is literally the first song actively sung by a character in this show. Even in the movie.
6:18 I mean… he said he hated it and earlier asked why he should care (first scene with other characters is Annie comforting a crying child who is even younger than she is while another older girl is more realistic… I wanted to see Annie proven right so the youngest girl would have hope to continue on, but I guess nobody *HAS* to care about them and at the same time that’s kind of the point sooo…)

Carol Burnett is the one redeeming factor of this movie.
+Wyatt Farr She's the one thing about this movie I remember from watching it in my 4th grade music class, particularly the song "Little Girls" where she makes gin in her bathtub.
+Alex Meyer The fact that she was making gin went totally over my head until I rewatched it a few years ago. Then it all made sense.
Wyatt Farr In our music class back then, for some weird reason, we thought she was drinking and making perfume.
But Tim Curry was in it
I think the older you get you understand Miss Hannigan.
Annie is not a good film but for some reason I still enjoy in. Nostalgia is probably clouding my vision but I do like watching this film. I like the songs more than anything.
If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all...
It is a great fil,.
The stage version of Annie is much better than the 1980s movie version. By the way, Annie does tell us right from the beginning what she wants. No-one under 16 should sing in a musical? Tell that to the Matildas!
And the little Cosettes and Gavroches
"Just wipe the floors! why are you doing flips?"
This was my favorite musical as a child, I was obsessed. And like I realize that it's not the greatest musical ever made, but it will never be spoiled for me due to pure nostalgia. That being said, this video is making me laugh so hard
Madeline Schmit Same for me and Mamma Mia!
8:19 I think I might know why you like this song because Tim curry
The TV adaptation with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber is by far superior
If you hate this version you really will hate the 2014 big screen disaster !
KIKA ALEGRIA I still haven't seen it! So, is it like "bad" as in "you'll really just feel uncomfortable" bad or "bad" as in "so terribly awful that you can't help but laugh" bad?

+Musical Theatre Mash It won the Razzie for Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff Or Sequel. That should tell you something.
That is a perfect description "
Ripoff Remake" ....lol
Moral of the story: Just get randomly adopted by a war profiter. That seems easy enough
This version is honestly really special to me tbh. It was my first exposure to non-animated Disney musicals and I was obsessed with it as a little kid. No one will ever be a better Miss Hannigan than Carol Burnette in my opinion.

4:48 We all know how much Tommy LOVES Phantom of the Opera!
'No not Carol Burnette' pissing myself
Methinks you'd hate the 1999 TV movie version less. It strips the guff from this version and just tells the base plot with actual character motivations.
"Uh oh, not Carol Burnette!"
What about Matilda and School of Rock?
Basically all the Disney musicals(newsies, specifically)
While I really enjoy this movie, I can't really defend it and thus find this video hilarious. I always liked the 1999 one more (it had Kristen Chenoweth and Kathy Bates in it).
uM... 13, SCHOOL OF ROCK, MATILDA, GAVROCHE IN LES MIS.. NEED I SAY MORE?
Kerah Bundy JASON IN FALSETTOS
Les in Newsies
Oliver!
I smell children could be a reference to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which is another musical you'd probably rather be watching.
Oh should Jason from Falsettos not exist either
The 1999 version really is much better. Two words: Audra McDonald.
the choreography in the movie version of "hard knock life" make me upset because they are sliding down banisters and having pillow fights. that does not look like a hard knock life.

"Easy street" is my favorite song from Annie too
Omg when he said “Everything today is thoroughly modern!” I shouted “ChEcK yOuR pErSoNaLiTy!”
I have a problem...
"How many onions and potatoes does this orphanage need"
Just enough to make sure the audience understands carol brunette is making the childs work.
What is his problem with Annie
In teacher training they literally tell you not to get involved in girl fights because they don’t care, whereas boys will break apart as soon as they lose eye contact pretty much
9:22 I know where there’s a Better Circus escape the night season 3
Annie is actually set in the 1930's! The turn of the last century was the 1900's and 1910's.
Carol Burnet unironically as Annie. Now that, I would have watched.
That ghastly "Let's Go to the Movies" number was written specifically for the film, presumably as a pitch for Hollywood. It replaced a better song about NYC. Either way, it does nothing to advance the story. So much wasted talent: Carol Burnett, and for pity's sake, John Huston.
I got too distracted by the Thoroughly Modern Millie reference.
My friend made me watch this movie, I just sat on my phone the whole time 😂😂😂
How do you only have 2,008 subs? You're so freaking awesome.
Okay this legit pisses me off. He criticizes choreography and creative dialogue for being not “realistic” or “purposeful”. The point of Annie is a fun, light hearted musical. Not every musical has to be intense and deep. There are just some musicals out there to have fun with.
Also.... NOT EVERY MUSICAL HAS TO BE REALISTIC. SOMETIMES ITS JUST A PERFORMANCE.
The stage musical is much better
It gives more depth to Warbucks (at the end of NYC he is all sweet and stuff and it is nice unlike movie one)
This is my favorite video of yours. It's so hilarious! You should make more commentaries like this!
Admittedly, I like the Disney version with Kathy Bates better.
The Show is much, much better than the movie telling of it.
You might want to check out the 1999 made for TV version of Annie that aired on ABC. This was Rob Marshall's first directing job plus he did the choreography. Tommy: this is the worst musical ever
Me, a theatre kid who’s breakout role was ms Hannigan when I was 13: :(
Tommy: I do like easy street
Me: :)
The thing that makes this musical watchable is the adult talent. Carol Burnett, Ann Reinking, Bernadette Peters, Tim Curry, HELLO?!?! So amazing!!
I'm laughing wayyyyy to hard at this... as I do math work
Personally, if I were Annie, I would love to have Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters as my parents
I know I'm late and I love your videos but I thought you said Into the Woods is one of your favourite musicals and that has Little Red Riding Hood who sings many songs. She is under 16. Same with Sound of Music, Les Miserables, 13, Oliver, Secret Garden, The Wizard of Oz, etc.

...Just a question: is it "Annie" itself you can't stand, or just this version of the musical?
+John Robledo I ask because, a.) I'm not a fan of this movie, either. And b.) I do LOVE the stage musical and the 1999 film (with Kathy Bates as Miss Hannigan) very much. (If you don't, that's fine, obviously, I'm just curious and a bit confused.)

What about the 1999 version it's a million times better
The 1990s version is more like the original musical and has a great cast apart from Kathy Bates as Miss Hannigan (she was pretty miscast tbh).
I can't stop laughing! I have to tell all my theatre friends about this channel XD
This was one of my favorite movies as a child and I still like it. But, I love your video. I can't stop laughing.
Dude, you will probably never read this, but you , "tiny little any puppets that..." made me laugh out loud. thanks!
You missed a reference to a musical you'd rather be watching at 5:04, unless that's not the child catcher from Chitty but rather Angelica Houston in Witches
OH NO! NOT CAROL BURNETT!
Had me dying.
I just found your channel and I love it:)! You're hilarious
This is the funniest video you have ever done.
That "Or else I'll eat her" part was Hilarious!
"What? That mess you just made?"
'Yes, that mess I just made, I'm an abusive alcoholic, pay attention!'
If no one under 16 should sing in a musical, why do we have Gavroche, or young Cosette ,or fucking les Jacobs or any child character in a musical
The Disney version with Audra McDonald is much better. And the actress that plays Annie can actually sing.
“And the actress the plays Annie can actually sing”
Aileen could sing, she wasn’t the perfect singer but she had times where she sang beautifully. That girl received so much hate as Annie. If you have nothing nice to say then shut your mouth. That was very rude. I admit she wasn’t perfect but there’s way worse people out there.
This version of Annie was my childhood and playing Miss. Hannigan in Annie Jr was one of my favorite roles ever, all opinions aside.
try seeing the musical its so much better than the movie less dramatic and better
5:57 What about You're a Good Man Charlie Brown? You admitted on the podcast that you yourself think that show is brilliant.
You should watch the 1999 version of Annie, it's infinitely better
You must be joking
This movie was made for the 3-12 year set! My younger sisters saw it when they were ten and loved it. It is still considered the gold standard that other versions have to live up to! Is it cheesy? Yes! Does it have flaws? Yes! Does it make kids happy? Yes! And making kids happy and not adults is what is important! I'm still giving this musical two thumbs up! Sugar is good in high doses!
I loved this movie!! FOR SHAME!!!
I almost thought you were cool... then you shat all over my favorite childhood movie. I wanna cry now.
You know Tommy hates Annie a lot because he would rather watch a Lloyd Webber show
pretty sure I could receite this move off the top of my head, along with mary poppins and the sound of music. i had a really specific sheltered childhood.
Why are Statler and Waldorf in Warbucks mansion?
Love your comments
Still better than the remake.
Orphan Fists and nasal high-pitched singing. Little Orphan Annie is abducted by the Guardians of the Galaxy and joins their fight to restore order and justice to the world. Also tries to convince them not to steal things, but is shut up every time.
When I need to pause so I can stop laughing its a good video.

Should have watched the 1999 version! I love that one!
This not my favorite musical however if I have to pick one version of this musical. This is the one I would pick.
4:20 I thought you were going to make a theatre reference there
Why?
+Scostrich Greens, greens, nothing but greens
I got you-lol :)
This was greatness
I mean this genuinely: You must be a blast to watch bad movies with.
The movie isn't bad.
More concerned about her breathing little girls than eating them.
It's a double hung window, don't make them much anymore.
I like the 81 film much better than the stage musical. But, I was three when it came out and had a record of the music, which I listened to over and over again. I know it's a generational thing. OMG 1:59 hilarious
