    Love the section on Piety.
    It's quite literally a game changer. I think you could modify this to work for things like warlock patrons and other gods.
    I've always felt that if the gods of various settings were so involved in history, wouldn't it make sense to grant boons to their champions?
    This book offers good guidelines for rewarding religious oriented roleplay that might not be the forte for many DMs.

      Yes! It’s what made me decide to get it when on the fence. Another TH-cam review I watched gushed about the piety system and how generally useful it is to apply to most dnd 5e games! The best is has meddling gods that reward petty after all! Useful enough one TH-cam reviewer said these rules should have been in the PHB or DMG at least. I was wanting more rules guidelines to help gods in my world even more.

      You can! There is a creature called "Nyx-Fleece Ram" From the book: "If someone sheers a Nyx-Fleece Ram without damaging the creature, the fleece can be made into a magic garment." Then they have a D6 table to roll what the power is. So gather your crew and set sail.

    The only thing about core classes in Theros I have found is in the section about the Gods and their Champions, it lists not only which Divine Domain the various Gods represent but also which classes they favour for their champions. For example, Thassa favours Clerics, Fighters, Rogues, and Wizards, while Iroas for example favours Barbarians, Clerics, Fighters, Paladins, and Sorcerers, and so on. I guess from there it's up to the creativity of the GM and players to fit their characters in as Champions. I'll be joining a Theros based campaign in a few weeks hopefully, I am excited for it!

I actually started collecting D&D again after 20 years because of my interest in this book. I was curious what it cost and noticed an amazing sale on the core books so... here I am. I bought this book mostly because I like how how gods and religion are integrated into Theros and how heros and villains will have ties to the gods - being indifferent to the gods is *not* the path of least resistance but an important and challenging ethical choice. In contrast I find the gods and religion of in most D&D settings rather bland.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely agree. It’s the problem of trying to appeal to everyone with a single setting.
      Whereas the setting of Theros has a very specific feel it refuses to betray.

    • @cattrucker8257
      @cattrucker8257 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same company, rather - which only serves to add an extra incestuous layer to it. Forced cross-promotion is always iffy, and while I kinda liked the "planeshift" brochures other worlds got, basing full world releases around just revisiting MTG settings is a big mistake.

      @@cattrucker8257 Oh right! I knew wizards of the coast made both D&D and MtG but for some dumb reason in the back of my head I guess I thought there was a WotC for D&D and a WotC for MtG. Like those two brain cells just some how missed each other. But anyway, my dumbness aside, I do agree

  • @cattrucker8257

    The Eloquence subclass is absolutely bonkers overtuned compared to other bard subclasses already available. If there remained any doubt about it, this seals bards as the 5E protagonists.
    I feel kinda similar about the "this is an MTG setting" being a sort of downside/turnoff. It may be because MTG settings are very "flavour"-heavy but tend to be very shallow and superficial and not reach nearly as far as a good TTRPG adventure setting should. There's lots of mood setting but very little meat on the bones. This book seems to remedy that to some extent, with a good map and all, but it's still not as fleshy as Faerun or Eberron et al. However, at the same time, MTG worlds are very good for drawing inspiration from and using for your own stuff.

    I have the Mythic Odysseys of Theros book. I've been enjoying it. It sets up a world that I think I would enjoy playing in. On the flipside, the only aspect of Rime of the Frostmaiden that I've found compelling is some of the art. I *should* be interested in it based on the setting, but samples of it have actually put me off. I think the story it is trying to tell is just not my jam.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely seems like kind of a survival horror vibe with isolation and a harsh environment. Which sounds super interesting to me, but we will see how they pull that off. Seems like it would be hard to do well in a dungeons and dragons game.

      @@KyninhaH Update. It's pretty good. It doesn't lean into the survival horror as much as it could. It's still DnD, and system-wise that isn't much different. There are a couple climate and conditions sorts of rules to contend with, but overall it's more of a TONE change that doesn't radically alter what players are doing in your average DnD game. It's always cold, often dark, windy, and strange stuff is happening everywhere.
